After searching all over the Boston Metro area for a curly hair specialist for years, I am so happy I found Helaine. She truly listened to my concerns/needs and took her time with my cut, treatment, color and blow drying technique. She also explained how I should wash, put product in my hair and gave me the tools I need for the upkeep. Run from this place. Went in for a color and a style. Instead of explaining the cost of the treatment, she just did it. I have my hair done all the time, in my many years I HAVE NEVER BE CHARGED SUCH AN OUTRAGES FEE FOR THE SERVICE, and the results was not great So she made a few extra dollars but lost a customer and is getting this terrible review. I found Helaine Marie's salon almost a year ago when I needed to have someone take care of my curly tresses and I can honestly say that she is THE CURL DOCTOR! Or the curl whisperer! She is certified in Ouidad's curly cuts and does a fantastic job! And each Ouidad curly cut from this curl doctor lasts a solid 6 months so that your interim cuts are just half that cost. And she is refreshing...no snooty or elitist attitude here, just someone who wants to give you the best cuts ever AND you can come back within a week if anything needs to be touched up. And she is so conveniently located with lots of free parking and does her best to accommodate your schedule, even on short notice. This place was so well reviewed and she was great about texting to schedule but the cut was the worst I have had and the keratin treatment didn't work. The cut was lopsided (not in a trendy way just in a sloppy way with long hairs randomly missed. When she noticed it she then said that it was because I hadn't been sitting still -mind you she had never once told me this during the cut or asked me to move a different way or anything like that so it seemed like just a way to deflect blame. Then she had the nerve to tell me that I could pay to come back for a Ouidad cut if I wasn't happy- which she had recommended against at the beginning and then made it seem like if I had just done that the cut would have been good. The keratin treatment wore off after about a week despite my using the super expensive shampoo and conditioner she recommended. A total waste of money and very unprofessional to mess up and then blame me for it and only fix it if I paid her more. read more

I wanted to wait a bit before I wrote this review, because I went to Helaine Marie for the first time, to get the certified Ouidad Carve and Slice haircut (with the "rake and shake") - for naturally curly hair only. The cost was $120 (before tip) and supposed to last about 6 months. I was highly skeptical. I never paid more than $50 for a cut. $120 is "big city" prices and out of my meager budget. But my hair was desperately needing a drastic change. So I booked it. And I am glad to say I was proven wrong! Watch the youtube video for the technique...this is part of what made me skeptical, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of cutting going on, and it's all seemingly underneath. Same as when Lanie was "carving and slicing" my hair. Nothing appeared different, not a whole lot seemed to be happening, it was very quick....yet there was all this hair on the floor. Hm. First 3 days, I wasn't very happy. I didn't notice much of a difference. Not happy I paid $120+ for this. Hm. Then, I guess my hair had to "recover" or something ..I don't know...because, the magic kicked in on day 4. THIS is exactly what my curly locks needed, THIS is exactly what I have been searching for but could not find. Curly hair, to "lay" correctly needs a specific cut, and THIS is the cut for that. I could not be more happy :) Today is September 16, I had my Carve and Slice cut on April 23, 4 months ago, absolutely got my moneys worth. I am only now thinking of making an appointment for a month out, not because it really needs a "trim" but more that since the cut my hair has grown like crazy - but the RIGHT way - if you have longish curly hair you will understand what I mean by me saying I do not have triangle head. lol Thanks Lanie! I have very fluffy, thick, curly hair that spends 99% of the time in a ponytail. I am working on letting my color go gray on it's own now since it stays healthier, but the downside is that it started looking even more unruly! I am heading back to work soon and also had a rare family photo set up, so I was desperate to do something with my hair. I needed a style that I could wear down. I had a Ouidad cut 10+ years ago at another place, but stopped doing them regularly and was now sporting the big fluffy triangular mess of hair. I found Laine when I googled Ouidad and called. She got me in at 5pm because of a cancellation. I ended up doing a Ouidad cut and my first keratin treatment. She pulled out all the stops to tame the volume. It took 3 days to let the keratin treatment set, and it's now been a couple of weeks. I absolutely love the result. The keratin made my hair (especially the grays) shiny and a little relaxed and the Ouidad cut gave my hair a great shape. I choose not to flat-iron my hair - I prefer my hair curly, but the combination of Ouidad cut and keratin has made my curly hair look like I'm having a good hair day every day. read more

I have been going to Lanie for several years. Every time I go to the salon I look like a drowned rat and come out looking like a hair model. What I love is how honest she is a lot of hair dressers will set false hope and tell you that you will look just like Beyoncé when you're done. Nope not here helaine is a straight shooter and I love it so if you want someone who will lie to you just to get your money this place isn't right for you. Helaine Marie did the hair for my wedding. She was great about communicating through email, which was perfect for me because I live in MN and the wedding was in MA. Lainie and Candace did hair for 6 people (me, my mom, my aunt, groom's mom, and 2 bridesmaids). I thought they did a fantastic job! They met us at the venue and were very accommodating to everyone's requests. I did a trial updo several weeks before the big day, but I changed my mind and wanted to do curls the day of. I seldom write reviews but felt compelled to after my experience at this salon. I had been to many different hairdressers trying to find someone who could create the color I want ( blonde highlights on a brown base without the blonde being 'yellow' or 'orange' )... Helaine knew exactly how to achieve the results I wanted and did not cut corners.... it took a lot of work and time but she did it perfectly! The salon is so comfortable, pretty and welcoming. The price was no where near as much as I've paid in other salons around town, and the result was better! Kelli rearranged her schedule for me and Lainey was very attentive to my emails.
