I am glad I had a chance to visit before Thanksgiving to stock up on some goodies! If you've been to Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown, Four Town is kind of similar, although the rustic farmhouse-chic shop does not have a prepared foods counter. However, they more than make up for it with all the amazing vegetables and fruits grown onsite. I was very impressed with the Honeycrisp Apples and Butternut Squash, as well as their wide selection of house made jellies and salad dressings. In addition to Four Town's slate of offerings, they also showcase other local vendors such as Wrights Dairy Farm's milk and cakes and Venda Ravioli's frozen fresh pasta and sauces. Four Town also carries fresh flowers and greenery that is holiday-ready - Christmas Trees and decorative wreaths and evergreen garlands. The team is friendly and offers excellent assistance in recommendations and recipe ideas- everyone we interacted with was delightful. This is a great stop along the way to lunch or dinner in neighboring Warren or Bristol, and a lovely way to spend a weekend afternoon!

The brownish tomatoes were great for snacking with salt and pepper, but we also made a caprese with them. The melon was fresh, juicy and sweet, but mild. The rind was soft enough to eat! A few items looked like they had started to go bad, but overall the selection was interesting. When they're not staffed, they use an honor system with prices listed on a board and a cash box, and they also accept Venmo. The prices were reasonable for a farm stand, and I like supporting local farmers whenever I can. I've seen they do CSA here, and I may try it out this year.

HOW IT WORKS: A seasonal host in the west end opens their yard every Tuesday from 4:00 - 6:00 for pick up. You pay a lump sum in two installments and receive the same number (or weight) of items weekly as everyone doing the share. WHAT IT COST$: For roughly $30 a week, our basket tote was filled with lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, squashes, zucchini, garlic scapes, and other veggies. We added an egg share for an additional $5 a week - convenient. Comes out to about $600 for the season. QUALITY: Everything is fresh but needs to be eaten that week. QUANTITY: I say it's enough produce for 2.5 people eating salad and multiple vegetable sides nightly for dinner. If you're not veggie heavy, you could stretch this to a family of four. VALUE: Not only did we save massive amounts on grocery shopping, but we needed to go to the store far less often AND we really saved because we were eating out much less in efforts to consume all of our produce. VARIETY: food type was lacking (when I compared notes with my sister in law's Boston share) and you'll have to get crafty with garlic scapes as you'll receive at least 20 for the first few weeks of the season. We made a lot of pesto. TIP FOR SHARING: If you're going in with another couple, they recommend you alternate weeks for pick up and keep everything you receive during your week. After all a head of lettuce is a difficult thing to split.

Fresh, beautiful, flavorful and reasonable, I load up on veggies from this stand every Saturday morning. Plump green zebra tomatoes, crisp lettuce, meaty eggplant and delicate miniature squash -- the list goes on and on and everything is top-quality. There are many produce-growers int he area, but I consistently return to Zephyr simply because I've never been disappointed in the quality, and am always impressed by the friendly people who staff their tent. A favorite? Their succulent husk cherry tomatoes. If you'v never tried these guys, do yourself a favor and get them while and when you can. Their like little drops of sunshiney sweetness that explode in your mouth. Who knew produce could be such a treat?!
