We were eating in our car while our gas was pumping and the owner, Ross, came out and starting yelling at us and our two kids that this was not a picnic table and we couldn't be eating here. Mind you we were getting gas, not just loitering and there was no one else there, plenty of open pumps. He was very rude and continued to cuss us out in front of our two year old and 3 month old. Do not give this guy your business. Grumpy old man. read more

We stopped to get gas since we had been driving for 4 hours and while doing that we let our dog out to the very far corner so she could pee (on a leash and behaving). One of the employees came out yelling no dogs and started coming towards us. Stopped the gas immediately and took our service else where. Really rude to paying customers. Could have approached us way differently. read more

Ross is the most honest mechanic you'll ever meet. I've been going to him for years. He has gone out of his way for me numerous times, including an after-hours tow from the airport due to a dead battery. He's also never tried to tell me my car needed unnecessary repairs, like the large Ford dealership in Missoula has done. read more

Stay clear! Rude owner or employees and money hungry. Pulled in from highway to get gas and use the restroom - about to piss my pants. I asked for restroom key and the guy says it's for customer use only. He said are you getting gas? I said yep thinking about it. He said well go pump your gas then I'll give you the key. I left and went next door . This type of BS should put businesses out. If you want to patron this place so be it but I'd stay clear! Far away! I loved this place, but last time i brought my car there. it came back running worse than when i brought it in. also do not know why they parked my car on the street after diagnostic which they said showed nothing that they could figure out. yet, they still charged me for having no answer. I've never been to this gas station before, until today. I pulled in because I was low on gas, paid 50$ to fill my tank and empty my garbage. Within a couple of seconds of cleaning some trash out of my car, I was greeted insincerely by the gas station attendant. He said that I had to much trash, and that I needed to walk over to the dumpster. I normally wouldn't have had a problem with this but I'm eight months pregnant on the sketchy side of town. I am also a paying customer, as well as your job duties are to change out the trashes not mine. If you don't like your job of changing trashes go find a new one. The attendants name was Ross or Rob. I will not be coming here again. I hope you can find better employees that won't greet your customers poorly. That employee is a great way of losing business with that attitude, and laziness. read more

My experience with the guys at Hellgate has been good. I've had a few oil changes, and some minor repairs, and had them check my vehicle over a for a long desert trip. In my experience they've always been thorough and scrupulously honest. They've never told me something was broken that wasn't and more often than not, they've told me that something I was worried was broken, in fact wasn't. Their pricing is fair (not the lowest in town, but certainly competitive with other places. FYI my oil and filter change is $42), and they get the work done on time. A lot of people in town trust these guys so, you may have to wait a day or two for major last minute work, but they've always been able to squeeze me in same day for a 30min to an hour job. The only thing people seem to be uneasy with is the owner's moods. He's already got an acerbic sense of humor and sometimes he can be a bit short/curt maybe even rude (depending on your expectations). Not a bubbling friendly super positive guy, but hey, he gets the job done well and he's quite honest. read more

I gave them 4 stars for the fact that they are usually busy when I would need them to work on something.the times I needed like a tire gauge,air,gas,or like a valve stem cap for my tires?when open,they were there and been good about it.the garage part and sales floor are open 8am-8pm mon-fri.sat I believe is 8 or 9 am until 3pm and closed sundays and some holidays.gas pumps (for credit cards)and vending machines (cash or coin)open 24/7. read more

I highly recommend them as they are honest and hardworking and let me know exactly what is going on with my car before they do any major repairs! No job seems to be too big or too small. I'm writing this review to counteract the guy from California who gave Hellgate Conoco a 1 star review...based on what he GUESSED they would have charged him to charge his battery. It's just plain not fair to diss a place because you guess they would overcharge! They never even gave him a quote! It's just plain irresponsible to mess with a shop's reputation this way! I've been going to Hellgate Conoco for twenty years. They are without a doubt the most honest shop you will find. They've earned that reputation. Ask anybody who actually lives here. read more

Im a Montana resident and just came to Missoula for a conference, decided i wanted to clean my car out so i looked up the closest gas station and this was it. I pulled up to throw away some trash i had a wash my windshield from all the bugs i accumulated driving here. Not even one minute goes by and an older white male comes out to me and at first I thought he was joking saying, " Have you seen the commercials?". I replied,"Um not I'm not sure what you mean". He said, "No gas no services!" I was in shock not knowing if it was a joke or not. so without being able to wipe my windshield clean I politely told him sorry that I wasn't from here and left. I live in Bozeman Mt and every gas station there allows you to throw out your trash or clean your windshield without a purchase of gas. I don't know if this is all of Missoula but I surely will not stop anywhere here if i just need to throw my trash away and clean my very dirty windshield so I can see. Old man could have been so much nicer to me, he also didn't seem to like the fact that I was there with my Girlfriend either. Not very pride of him. Having battery issues I took my car to have Hellgate Conoco put a test meter on it and I would have bought a new battery if necessary. The guy wanted me to leave it all day... so he could charge a couple of shop hours. Gave a very convincing story about how he would have to do lots of different tests. Being a dude who knows better I said no thanks and went to the Napa auto parts store. At Napa they did exactly what I asked. They put their volt/amp meter on the battery and could quickly show me that battery was dying. Less then 300amps in a 550amp battery. Napa guy gave me a couple battery options from $70-100. He let me borrow a wrench so I could change it and looked over my shoulder to make sure I knew what I was doing. Batteries are stupid easy to changed so when I was done in 10min he took the old battery for disposal at no charge. Total cost $100 (I got the 700amp battery cause Montana winter is coming) I'm guessing the Conoco Con man would have wanted $300-400. Stay away from him ladies!! I've been to Napa Auto stores all over the country. Good honest guys who will help you out. read more

The big man at Hellgate Conoco is Ross, but he should be called Boss, and I don't even have to tell you why. But I will anyhow. He is a rare breed, the last of the independent owner/mechanic service station men. Once he charged me $20 for shop/labor time for a repair. Maybe it took just a few minutes to perform the repair, but pretty much ALL shops charge a one hour minimum. In the summertime he's routinely working until 8 or 9 at night. With all this in mind, it makes sense to me that he can be a bit of a grouch, and it doesn't bother me. It's not easy to make an honest buck owning a service station. I walk in there to make an appointment, and I have had gotten tongue-tied describing the problem, from the sheer intensity in how he looks at me. It took me a while to realize that these are not dirty looks, but the look of a diagnostic machine at work, cataloging and analyzing data. Sure, he gets grumpy, like all real people do. What's important is that he is real with me through and through. Finally, it's worth adding that Hellgate Conoco has grown corn on the street corner as a statement against ethanol subsidies, just because he can. With the petroleum industry as powerful as it is, I'm glad to see a small independent shop who isn't afraid to speak his mind. read more

I have been working with Ross and his crew at Hellgate Conoco Service Center for six months now on a biweekly bases as I work as a shuttle driver for a local business. Honesty, integrity, quick and fair are all true depictions of the level of service provided by Ross and the boys. If you would like your vehicle to be repaired, take it here. This business is very close to my place of work, so I often refer my customers to it. There have been occasions where it was a simple fix and he has provided them service (even after hours or close to closing time). I now use this location as my preferred mechanic shop. I have brought in my personal vehicle and have always felt like I was given very fair estimates, and the owner and his employees care more about the customer than they do about making a few bucks. There isn't a single location in Missoula that I would recommend more. I hope this review helps some travelers having car problems. Ross, the owner is a great guy and will do whatever he can to help you. This place really is a great example of what Montana values are all about. The guys at Hellgate Conoco have worked on my car three times. They are very competent and the most honest mechanics I have ever had any experience with. This last time I thought I had a major issue and they could have easily overcharged me but they didn't. They are pretty busy and sometimes you might have to wait a day or two to get your car in but it's understandable and worth waiting for. read more

Be careful and get quotes, dropped my truck off on a recommendation and my mother handled and paid while I was out of town. Over 4000$ for a 350 engine on a 98 Chevy? Never have I seen someone take a woman for so much. The parts list was so padded I will never recommend Or return to this auto shop. They charged for parts they did not replace. read more

They were able to fix my vehicle on a Saturday as a walk-in. Reasonable and efficient. Very impressed!!

I got my car fixed here. They didn't do the wiring right and the car caught fire (luckily i had a 2 liter coke and was able to put the fire out.) They fixed the problem but charged us for towing the car back to them. read more

Avoid. These people actually did such a bad job on my the wiring in my jeep it caught fire. Then they had the nerve to try and charge me for towing the jeep back to their gas station. read more
