Where customer service goes to die. Hipster staff who could care less about patrons. Our table of four felt like we were an inconvenience.

You can grab a brew in between crate diggin at 2 dope record stores within a block of each other. Beer was great, customer service was sharp, vibe is mellow. read more

Cozy spot with a great selection of beers. I tried the ginger beer and the west coast IPA, both were fantastic (only $8 a pint too!) I definitely recommend making a reservation. Since I arrived without one, we were placed at the back, despite tables remaining available at the front the entire evening. For what it is HELM certainly deserves its five stars. Have been long ago since I visited the brew pub and overall we were hugely satisfied. Beers are yummy and diverse, something for everybody's taste. I'm inclined to rave about the Hutchie Frutti and Sour Pickles brews. My recommendation: get a flight of four to make your own choices. HELM has a full bar for people who have limited beer affiliations. We loved the food, my friends enjoyed their burgers, the poutine is prepared the right way, don't hesitate if you crave it and an extra bacon can be added to both dishes. Veggie lovers should ask for the salad menu and I loved my vegan choice. The only recommendation I have is to fix the benches in the front section of the pub, they are inclined and uncomfortable to sit on. We had to move to the back of the pub and sit at one of tall tables, which are much more convenient. Will be back soon and for sure again on Sunday late afternoon! read more

I discovered this gem yesterday for the first time. We were a group of 30 and reserved the entire back of the bar. The appetizer and charcuterie we had were spectacular and the drinks were good. House red is only $5.89 and it was quite good for what it was. Large beer selections (brewed in house) and they're $5.50 per pint during the day and $6.50 if you come after 6PM or something like that. I also saw burgers on the menu that looked absolutely amazing. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying them next time. I feel a bit bad about this 3 stars thing, because it's a really nice place, it's cozy, the service was nice and welcoming, it's super clean, and the menu looks good. BUT the beers, well, as the 3stars review says, were ok. Just ok. So I haven't tried all of them, but I'll be back and maybe the other ones will get another star to the place, because I actually want to like it. Excellent micro in the heart of mile end. Well crafted beer and great friendly service. 4 to 8 daily happy hour with $5.50 pints. My wife thinks that their "tartar du moment" which is a daily salmon tartar is the best in the city and only $12! You need to go there! read more

Really confused about the mixed feelings expressed by the other Yelpers on this page. Went there on a Saturday late evening, when the bar was filled with locals casually dressed, and clearly there to grab a drink and a few bites with friends. Totally not pretentious, it's a welcoming local bar that serves what anyone would need on a cold evening: decently priced homemade craft beer. The selection is comprehensive, from the bitter 3.5% pale ale to the 10% stout. Some beers are regulars, such as the Bernard pale ale, but a few rotating taps are usually available--just check the blackboard! Bar staff is friendly enough for single drinkers who come there by themselves: they can sit at the pool table-like bar and, plus, there's free WiFi! The bar routinely plays '90s rock. Food is decent, but I would recommend to eat before coming there: keep in mind that it's a bar, not a restaurant. Food offerings are overly standard and portions are slightly small for the cost. read more

Helm was dead on a Sunday night just after Canada day. It was rainy and a bit cold, so it wasn't the best time to be outside. We stopped into Helm for some Sangria and Salmon Ceviche. The Sangria was meh, but let me tell you. The Salmon Ceviche was so good... I mean, delectable, I am craving it now. My friend and I ordered one each... and then we ordered another EACH. The service was a bit spotty, but part of that was probably because the waiter didn't really speak English, the other part is because he just wasn't very timely. read more

Went for dinner with my BF on our last night in Montreal and had the best meal of the week here. We both got the beef burger and it was hands down one of the best I have ever had, it was big and juicy just like a burger should be. We each got two beers to wash our food down and were very impressed (we are big beer people). We tried Esplanade, Casgrainator, Hutchie Blondie and Du Park. The music was a little loud but we were both too into our burgers to talk anyways. Staff was friendly and even helped translate some of the menu for us. read more

Though I've often frequented Helm because cidre on tap is not available just anywhere, and I might still go back because it's a great place, as a bartender and Canadian I STRONGLY object to American pint glasses (473 ml) instead of what we serve in Montreal, Imperial pints (568 ml). Helm skims off 3.34 Imp. ounces (17%) and customers don't know it because of the different styles of glasses and heavy mugs used. They have no ordinary pint glasses... the American ones would feel thin compared to Imperials. It's a shame, because if not for this I certainly would give Helm five stars. read more

It should have everything going for it, homemade beer, an emphasis throughout the menu on local fresh product, nice wide windows so you can sit right on Bernard near Parc Ave, not too dim or bright, local and nice imports on tap, but Helm has never really super appealed to this particular crew mate. I've given it a try and I no doubt will again, and I'll keep an open mind I swear. But something feels cold, and something in the beer flavor was off or flat last time I was there, and the chairs cradled me oddly, and though the bar was not busy the expanse between window and bar was large enough, and the server focused on the folks immediately around the bar, to make me feel a little lost, drowning not waving, looking for the tab. read more

A very poor experience. Bad food . Who likes cold poutine? Cheese curds not melted? Really this is Montreal. Bad service. I am not apologizing for not speaking French. I am a tourist. I would not ignore you if you came to visit me and did not speak my language I would welcome you and treat you like a guest. Bad hospitality. Excessively slow and inattentive. Wow. The worst of the night was when the bartender chased me down outside to complain about the size of the tip. This sense of entitlement should get him fired. I am a chef. I have worked in "the business " for over 3 decades. I have my own catering business so I know what good food is and I most certainly know what good service is. I also know about the value of hospitality with new guests. Helm and the bartender flirting with the waitstaff while we waited for a simple drink order represented nothing good in any of the above areas. Chasing me down outside to bellyache about your little tip, well that just adds insult to injury. Your lucky I paid the bill!! read more

Very surprised this wasn't rated as highly as some of the other microbreweries in the area! My fiance and I arrived right at 3:00PM (well, technically before 3:00PM and accidentally walked in twenty minutes before it had officially opened, oops). Note: Even though the microbrewery itself opens at 3:00PM, if you're looking for food also, only snacks are available until 5:00PM, when the kitchen opens. We were the only ones there for the first hour or so, and the bartender was WONDERFUL. She offered to let us taste any of the beers on the menu and was extremely knowledgeable about each beer brewed here. Since this was a microbrasserie, OF course we only ordered things on tap; I enjoyed the bitter, the ginger beer, and the Hefeweizen. (Sidenote: If you're looking for a Hefeweizen that is absolutely BANANAS - and in which you can taste the bananas 100% - this is your beer!). My fiance enjoyed the IPA. There's a ping pong table in the back for anyone interested. As far as the set-up of the place went, there was a covered patio area near the front (with the front wall of the place being an full size glass sliding door; very nice and breezy. The bar is right in the middle. All of the bartenders who were there were incredibly accommodating and interesting; all in all, we really enjoyed this place and would recommend it. read more

Extrêmement déçu. Staff were extremely rude to us. When we arrived, not one staff acknowledged us. It was our first time there and we weren't sure if you sat yourself. So we waited. Someone finally made eye contact and pointed a finger to wait. No smile. He gave us the worst table in the restaurant, despite being mostly empty. When the server came over he appeared nice but spoke extremely quickly and abruptly. The server was not very attentive to us. We had to call out to him every time we wanted something. We asked for the bill and paid in cash. We left it on the table and were preparing to leave. We slowly made our way out. And when we got outside, a staff member was running to catch up. He accused us of walking out on our bill. He hadn't even been to the table and he wasn't even aware that our server had already brought us our bill and was then tidying up our table. We had left cash and tip on the table. I could see our table from the window and the server was there cleaning up. I don't know why this staff member thought we would walk out on our bill. There was no reason to suspect us for that. He was not our server nor did he come to our table once while we were there. We were extremely offended. We felt the staff were behaving rudely towards us and that scene at the door reinforced our impressions. Despite the beer being good, we would never go back nor would we ever recommend this place. read more

We went with a couple of friends to have a beer. This is brewpub, so we expected nice beers, but from all the one we tried, none was very satisfying. They all seems like textbook beer, but lack a bit of personnality; they tasted a bit bland. A good time followed by a disappointing aftermath; I will never go back. Service throughout the night was decent; very attentive and varied staff, but perhaps this is the problem. Everyone runs a tab, identified by your name. I settled up my tab at the end of my stay, with a gracious tip; a simple charge for a couple beers, paid cash at the bar on my way out. Later on in the night my friend was told that I didn't pay and he had to settle my tab. With such a brilliant system in place to ensure customer compliance, how could they possibly make this error? Of course they insist that they are correct, how could their brilliant system be flawed? Human error. No one really knows who you are, and they have no way of tracking who really paid. Just a name in a computer and your face is a blur. Maybe one of the 5 bartenders forgot to hit a key on his touchpad after my payment... or maybe he pocketed that cash; of course I'm speculating. I wish that I paid with a card so I could reverse the charges. It was their mistake, they should own up it. If you can't recall a payment, and you're double charging customers; change your system and wake up, open your eyes. read more
