I was searching for a gluten-free bakery in Paris and luckily came across Helmut Newcake--a bakery dedicated to solely gluten-free pastries and sandwiches. They had an array of options, from eclairs to croissants, there is plenty to pick from. I got one of their sandwiches, BLTA, which was fresh and delicious. They bake everything daily. The cafe also serves coffee and smoothies to go along with your gluten-free delicacies. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, especially since we were clearly tourists. They accept card for orders over 20 euros, anything smaller you'll have to use cash. I'd definitely recommend this place if you're in Paris and in need of a gluten-free option. read more

Quaint shop with phenomenal pastries and coffee. My husband who doesn't have a gluten intolerance enjoyed the coffee eclair! The raspberry tart was gone before I knew it. We will definitely be going back for breakfast again. Better than American Gluten free items, ours taste like garbage. This was a gift from God himself. I love this place! I recently spent 9 days in Paris and visited 4 times. It was such a nice treat to buy a few gluten free sweet treats for the day and come back again in a few days. If you like eclairs, skip the traditional chocolate. The caramel eclair is absolutely divine. Even my husband who eats gluten was pleased with the gluten free version. My other favorite was the molten chocolate cake. So delicious! The pear cake was an honorable mention. Also, I bought their gluten free baguettes a few times. Gluten free bread will never be as delicious as regular, but they do a pretty good job. It does need some butter or jam to combat the dryness that gluten free breads tend to have. I was really thrilled to have baguettes to eat! Go early because they often sell out of the favorites by the end of the day. This is a can't miss bakery for those can't consume gluten. read more

OMG! All the pastries! All gluten free for me :-) Tried to visit Helmut Newcake last year but they were shut down from 1st Jan through to the 14th I think. Got here on 31st Dec - last day open before their holiday shutdown again so was lucky this time. This time I bought eclairs, Paris brest plus brioche for breakfast. I had already grabbed bread at Chambelland, not realising I could also get freshly baked bread here too. Brioche was lovely and a decent sized loaf which was also enjoyed by my non gf friend. The cakes are amazing - fabulous pastries and the eclairs are delicious. We tried two kinds - chocolate and caramel and the pastry was super light and airy. The Paris brest was also fab and we tried a rhubarb meringue with pastry base too. Everything was amazing! I'll totally be back on my next visit. Staff were friendly and helpful. I was around €24 for four cakes and the brioche (€7 each loaf). Might sound a bit steep as gf isn't cheap in Paris but it is totally worth it! read more

The pastries were perfect and we sampled MANY - with cream, without, a tart, chocolate etc. It was a patisserie - no cavaets. The only slight commentary is that: They opened rather "late" when we there - after 11. The hostess made us pay before we sat, which we felt was rather odd since she did not make the other French speaking customers do that. Upon leaving, her counterpart asked if we had paid when we left. So we knew asking us to pay in advance was probably out of character. Also, there are only two small tables so it is not a place to linger if you want to eat in. Other than that - DO NOT HESITATE - this is a MUST stop on the Gluten Free tour of Paris. Coming from Seattle with a number of local bakeries doing steadily better with bread (Essential Baking, Nuflours, a Great Harvest in West Seattle with some excellent buckwheat breads) nothing I've had compared to the multigrain baguette I had here. I ate nearly the whole thing en route to Giverny! I went back again but after 3 pm and there were only petit pain left. I also really enjoyed an eclair, some financiers, and shared a Mme Fontenay (elsewhere called a religuse) with my glutinous nephew. He liked it but admittedly it's mostly creme. Monoprix and Carrefour carry some "sans gluten" products but the processed ones are as one would expect. I did like some Norwegian seed crackers I found at one. read more

Very effusive praise for this place from the entire family. The sweet treats were amazing, of which we had four; donut tower thing, opera (like tiramisu), eclair, and marzipan chocolates. Unlike other reviewers, we found our bread moist and pleasant and ate it without additional preparation or toppings - just cracked off pieces and ate it. Delicious! Hard to get a GF bread that has a tasty crust and soft/moist interior, but Helmut pulled it off. Note that we had two kinds of bread; the spherical loaf and baguette-style loaf. As someone who has to avoid gluten this was a diamond place to find. The selection of gluten free cakes was amazing and their breads were so fresh. We even managed to buy some to take home. Lasted the journey without falling apart. It's one of a few gluten free places in Paris and from the minute it opened it was busy! We sat in and had a basic brunch (quiche & salad) and the tourists who came in all said the same thing "We're so glad we found you!"). I really wish I could give them 5* because the service was friendly and lovely at both locations and the pastries are delicious. But, alas, it's not going to happen. I made sure to visit here in my first day in Paris so I could get some gluten free bread to accompany my lunches and dinners. The bread was not up to the same standard as the pastry and sweets. It is heavy and dense and more like an Irish soda bread. It also required heating to make it palatable. Thank goodness for all of the fantastic French butter and cheeses that I could pile into it! The tart pastry is buttery and crumbles perfectly. The fruit fillings are sweet and tart and compliment the richness of the pastry. The eclair choux is fluffy and filled with chocolate cream that melts on your tongue making you wish you had bought more. Bottom line: visit for the pastry, enjoy the tartes and eclairs. Helmut Newcake's smallish round loaves are slightly crunchy (croustillant) on the outside with a moist, not chalky, feel inside.
