When my dogs were puppies I took them to a different office. At that office the vet told me if I couldn't afford the highest quality of foods I should put my dogs up for adoption. Needless to say I'm very aware when Veterinarians get judgy. When I walked into the office yesterday I was shocked and surprised. Have you ever been to a Vet that didn't judge you!? That's where I was yesterday. No breed judgement, no food judgement, no lack of care judgement. Just love for my pet and a gentle reminder that Ticks are bad out where we've moved to. At the office I found out I hadn't taken my dogs to the Vet in over two years. While some places would call you neglectful and possibly berate you Dr. Howell did not. On a Saturday morning, our cat took a REALLY bad turn for the worse and it was clear that the humane thing to do was to put her down. We were panicking because it was a weekend, our normal vet was closed, and she was in a lot of pain. They got us in within a couple of hours and they were extremely compassionate. I must admit that I am extremely upset right now. As a client of this practice I feel that if one of my pets suffer an emergency the practice should see my pet. Not so. My male cat is suffering from a urinary tract infection and is possibly blocked. This condition is extremely life threatening in male cats because their urethra can block with crystals, their bladder fills and eventually ruptures causing extreme pain and then death. I called to request an emergency appointment. After patiently waiting on hold for 13 minutes I was told that all of their emergency appointments were filled for the day and was directed to Jefferson Animal Hospital in Louisville.... huh. On my way to Louisville with a bitter taste in my mouth. Makes me wonder about the future of my relationship with Helmwood veterinary clinic. read more

This has to be the worst vet I have ever been too. Not only will they nickle and dime you to death after they give you a price they will double charge and get upset when you point it out. Be prepared to wait in the parking lot for over an hour even after calling 15 minutes prior to your visit to make sure you don't just sit there with your animals like the last thee time here. I was a Helmwood customer since 2011. Both my dogs Rio and Yumi were their long term customers until death. They are VERY over priced with terrible customer service. I have seen their customer service went down the hill as the years went by, especially since Claire retired. Their medications are over priced. They over charged me on my Paw plans with NO explanation. I left numerous messages for a return call but they were ALWAYS busy. They sent a "text" to my house phone to ask me for more money! Their manager Monica was rude and unsympathetic. All she wanted was my money and told me she would send me to collections if I dont pay. The fact is they did not explain what was the bill for because their staff Kimberly refused to call me back when I asked about the paw plan balance. Yumi passed away on 25 December, no sympathy card from them. My Yumi was a patient there for 9.5 years! I've since received sympathy cards and flowers from Metropolitan Vet in Louisville and Chewy. Helmwood is all about money! Very disappointed especially after being a loyal customer for over a decade! DO NOT bring your pets there! read more

We have had a cat with leaky stools for 6 months now with no relief or explanation. same cat had kittens on feb 24th. We have called several times to leave messages about the kittens weight loss and not eatting to never receive a phone call back. We have now lost two kittens, our children are highly upset and we don't seem to be getting any answers or help with our current situation. We couldn't even get a call back about pricing for cremation. Why pay a vet we can't get answer or a simple phone call back. We can barely get in to be seen it feels like anymore. read more

The entire team is wonderful! They are great about reminding you the appointment and keeping in touch with updates. I love that they offer sedation if needed for a grooming visit. DO NOT USE THIS VET! They told us they had an "enclosed" yard for the dogs. I was explicit in saying my dog needed a harness and double leash bc she has a terrible past and is afraid of people. So instead the used a single leash and an inexperienced untrained walker. she got loose. they didn't DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG WITH THESE INCOMPETENT HEARTLESS PEOPLE! I boarded two dogs there and they only had one this morning. They told me they had an enclosed back potty area, they lied. My dog got out at 0700, they didn't call me until 0930!!! When I arrived, they were NOT EVEN SEARCHING FOR for her, claimed to have called animal control at 0700 ( they don't open until 1300), you can do the math. then when I arrived they said they had other animals and refused to help us look. the cops and some wonderful etown citizens helped us locate the dog. this establishment is trash, they are not experienced, and they lose dogs all the time according to the animal control. they called it an "accident" and left it at that and said they had other animals to care for (or lose?) I will be taking them to civil court. read more

This is absolutely the worst Veterinary Clinic anywhere I took my dog there because she broke her leg and they kept her all day and didn't even give her an x-ray even though they charged me for it they didn't even wrap her foot and they forgot to give me the medicine when I left they charged me a nickel and a dime and a bunch of money and said they couldn't find anything wrong and they wouldn't even give me a copy of the X-ray they said they couldn't do that I know they did not x-ray her foot the vet said that she did not think it was her she fell off the porch she couldn't walk for three months just now jumping this because I know they never took care of her or did anything for her and they charge me over $700 to do absolutely nothing but they kept her all day long and then they forgot to give me pain medicine for her I had to go back this place is so unprofessional they don't know what they're doing and they don't care about the animal and they are ridiculously overpriced they need to shut it down don't go there I also wanted to add but I took her there the second time they took another x-ray which they refuse to show me a copy of and they said she had crystals in her urine and the vet would call me later the vet never called me she never returned my call I called three different times about it and still to this day the vet has never returned my call it was Doctor read the name of the vet read more

The whole staff is just wonderful, from the initial phone call to schedule our Matilda's appointment to the day of the appointment. I stopped using this vet clinic because I began to feel suspicious about the care my pets got and the way I felt they "nickel and dimed" me. First, I had brought in a cat that had gotten in a fight and was sick from an abscess. He kept running a fever and wasn't responding to antibiotics. After being hospitalized for a week and running up a huge bill, they called me and said he showed signs of FIP and had to be put down. After my bill was already over $1600, not including the euthanasia fee etc. When my cat first showed signs of not responding to treatment earlier in the week, is when these vets should have known they were dealing with a case of FIP, and perhaps they did, they just let my cat suffer longer to pad their bill. So then I got a paw plan for two kittens after my cat died. The paw plan doesn't really cover anything. It's basically free money for them because I was charged for things I don't believe I should have been charged for. When my cats were spayed/neutered, I think pain meds and the Elizabethan collar they give should be included as part of the surgery. We all know that if we get surgery, we will have pain afterwards. It's a given. And the collar? That was dumb. I took it off my cat as soon as we got home because it was driving her nuts. I was charged for the pain meds, the collar, extra to have the less complicated laser surgery and the aftercare. What's the point of paying the paw plan if there are all these extra charges on top of it? And besides that, if they found a problem during an exam, they didn't know the cause, so they'd give me a med that didn't work. Then I'd have to go back, they charge me extra for the exam that wasn't "routine", give me another med that didn't work so I had to go back again to finally get the medicine I should have gotten first. But here's the last straw... so I've been having automatic payments deducted for a year. Nothing has changed-not my address or account info. I suddenly get a letter saying I'm $227.00 in delinquency. So I call, and they tell me yes, everything is paid on time, there are no issues. When I asked why the letter, I was told I didn't sign an agreement for a $225 deposit last year when I first signed up. I actually did, but I didn't have the paperwork right in front of me since that was a year ago so I just told them to apply that to the original agreement and leave me alone basically. But then I talked to my fiance, who had also paid some (like several hundred dollars) on my original bill and we are left wondering with both of us together having paid on it, it seems the payments aren't being applied and it looks like we still owe. I'm really unhappy with them. In my opinion, they aren't trustworthy at all financially or medically and I don't recommend this clinic. read more

The little pudgy male vet said my cat had an abscessed tooth which needed to come out IMMEDIATELY, ASAP right in front of his staff who told me they had no dental appointments available for a month. That is ASAP? I took her to E-town Vet Clinic immediately and they did it that same day. She still went into an autoimmune reaction from the delay. I took one old cat in for grooming and a senior blood profile and the bill was over $300. They even charged for two needles to draw the blood and two disposal fees.....it is their fault they missed getting blood with the first needle. I saw a little dog come in shivering from poisoning and they let the people sit a while before telling them they had to go to Louisville for a blood transfusion. The dog was freezing, they could at least have put his blanket in the dryer to warm it up. All they see is the color of money, and I guess green isn't good enough, soon they will ask for gold coins. read more

Dr. Hertelendy is amazing. My cat had a dental cleaning scheduled and I was honestly scared for her to go under anesthesia. Dr. Hertelendy answered all of my questions and really put me at ease. I've been taking our dogs to Helmwood Vet Clinic since 2004. We've had two separate dogs we've had to put down, and the HVC staff were so wonderful, gracious, considerate and compassionate during both unhappy days. Our current 3 small pooches are in the good health they're in thanks to the easy to follow advice given by the vets. I have PAW plans on 2 of the dogs, and am probably going to bite the bullet to purchase one for the youngest dog this year. Having the PAW Plan is not cheap, but it makes me actually get my butt up and get the dogs their check ups. . read more

Even though staff was nice, the prices are ridiculously too high. Took my cat in and after XRays and examination done and $366.76 later, the doctor still could not find out what was wrong. I'm not a veterinarian but he didn't know anymore than I did. Very dissatisfied with the knowledge of this doctor. Kept saying we can do this or that and when asked the price, it was $150-$200 for labs. I had already paid $175 for XRays and he didn't see anything wrong.? I believe they want you to keep doing more testing so they can take your money. I told them that even though the staff was nice, I would not be back because of the high costs for pet care. I will drive farther to my old veterinarian than go here again. They cater to the rich in Elizabethtown and I'm not rich so I'm not in there click. read more

Everyone is very friendly here. Hallie is well taken care of every time that we come in. We use the PAW plan and it has been great. She is also groomed there a few times and they do a great job. She has also been boarded there over the weekend. I feel confident with the group of people working there. They make me feel that she has been given the attention she needs. They don't rush you out when you are being taken care of. They answer all your questions and give you advise. Hallie is nine months old and they have been seeing her since she was 8 weeks old. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a carrying veterinary. read more

Scheduled appointment with Dr. Howell, and once I arrived was taken to room which waited for extended period of time, only to be greeted by a very rude and rushed question routine. Informed needed to have at least basic lab worked done, and results would be back within 24 hrs. 72 hours later still no results after several phone calls only to be told that they are extremely busy. read more

My English Bulldog bitch had a very difficult time conceiving (took 4 tries) and delivering her pups, The entire staff was very good with her and patient with me (the nervous human. They responded to my daily phone questions and reassured me. The cescerisn section went well and the pups are doing well. Very friendly staff! Zoe always gets a treat whenever she comes. They always take great care of my puppy. If you're looking for a cost effective way to get preventative treatment for your pet their PAW plan is a fabulous route to take! I am confident that my big black tomcat Wiley is in good hands at Helmwood Vet Clinic. Dr Howell got the big picture of Wiley's health status which is diagnostically complex, and proposed several treatment options and made really good clinical sense for several ways this might go. I know good clinical work when I see it, and I was assured that Wiley was getting top notch care. As for the other reviewers who are complaining about the fees: Folks, you need to realize that there is really not much difference between veterinary medicine and people medicine. An x-ray is an x-ray, and the costs are pretty much the same. And also, animals get a lot of the same illnesses that people get. If the complainers went across the street to the emergency room in at Hardin Memorial Hospital with the same problems as their pets, the fees would probably be more than $2,000. If your pet is part of your family, good vet care like this is a real bargain! read more

I recently moved to ky from tn. I was very pleased with my vet in Nashville. I was in high hopes of finding another vet clinic that I could compare. I was wrong about this place. I have given helmwood many opportunities to redeem themselves, but they continue to mess up. First visit: I brought my dog in for a 2nd opinion. They pretty much blew me off and charged me for a exam and sent me on my way. 2nd visit: went well surprisingly. 3rd visit: my dog was lethargic, not eating, and had lost 2 pounds (teacup breed) throwing up and not moving. They just gave her antibiotics, did not offer to give her X-rays, checked her blood at least and said she was just being picky. Sent her home without further instructions. 2 hours later she became 10x worse and had to be hospitalized for 3 days. Thank Goodness the only vet there nice enough to care for my dog was on call that weekend. (Dr Howell) she sent my little baby home feeling much better on a prescription diet and then proceeded to call and check on my dog a few days later. Then said she would special order me food next time I came in (a week later). 5th visit: came in for check up and ordered food while I was there. They said I would have it in 2 days. 2 days later I called up there and they said it would be here in the AM the next morning. I was in the area the next morning and stopped by....the receptionist I spoke with the previous day was there as well as the other one. When I walked in I just asked if it had come in by chance and the receptionist I spoke with the previous day scoffed and said, "seriously?!" To the other girl. The other girl looked at me and said it wouldn't be here for another week....I am guessing they never ordered it. I then said okay I need some food to last me until then (that was the whole reason I was ordering through them was because my dog had food sensitivity) so I bought a $40 bag of food and they said they would call me in one week when the new food came in. It's been 2 weeks and I have yet heard from them. They are horrible and their receptionist are idiots. The only person i recommend from that place is dr Howell. A Very opportunistic office! Money is their first priority! My 20yr , college student, daughter boarded her 6 mo. old puppy for 1 week for $152. The bill upon picking him up was over $300. They called her while she was on vacation and stated he had some medical problems they were concerned with- but they lacked to inform her of the cost! They knew mama had her credit card on file to bill fees too. The puppy is only 6 mos old and has had previous vet checks and vaccinations- how much can you look for and bill out seems to be the goal. Went back recently with two of our babies Dinozzo and Abby for a follow up on Dinozzo who came to with a wicked ear infection and Abby for her annual check up and shots. Dr. Reed as always was smiling and pleasant. She down any new issues with the canines and then one by one examine em then took them back for treatment and nail clipping! She would come back we discussed each dog seperetly as to any issues needing to be addressed. Abby's only issue was a broken tooth that will need to come out sooner then later. We then discussed Anthony Dizozzo they swapped his ears and are culturing the sample for a few days. In the mean time she gave him a shot of anti bio tics and trimmed him down. Abby also got a eye duct test to see if she producing enough tears and she is border line and I was told to go get a bottle of tear drops to she how they react over the next 3-4 months and we will follow up. They all fast and pleasant. Dr. Reed is always kind to animals and even humans LOL she takes as much time to get the info to you to make sure you know what you need to do to take care of your babies. My has a military dog that he receive when got out of the Marine Corp my son was a Lance Corp. And his K-9 was a Corporal one rank or stripe above my son who was his handler. The K-9 named Seger took some shrapnel in the chest that was meant for our soon and Seger came through with flying colors. Segar was retire from the Marine Corp and given to our son Michael for all the service the both did in saving the lives of the Marines in their unit! I I have talked into bring this great big ol war house of a hero. 90#+ Black Labrador US MARINE that was wounded to switch vets and to over and become a patient of Dr. Olivia Reed at the North Hardinsight and Helmwood Veterinary Hospital. They give great service from selling basic supplies, grooming services, boarding your babies while your out of town, they have the full ability to do almost anything your get needs medically, at all hours of the day by having a vet available 24/7. All of the bets and staff are fully trained and reliable and have been on staff for years. My wife and I prefer Dr. Reed but have had to us other Doctors when she was not available and they are as good as she is!! If you. Have a pet that you truly love in need of basic or emergency medical care North Hardin Medical in Radcliff next to Ky Farm Bureau and Helmwood Veterinary Hospital in Elizabetown next to Wendy's Hamburgers across from HMH are the only two places to take your family pets!! read more

Our senior dog started having problems walking on a Friday night. We called Saturday morning and was told to bring him up and they would work him in. Leslie assisted us in getting him into the room and talked to us about his symptoms and problems. Dr. Howell was working that day and had seen our dog several times over the years. She checked him out and gave a full exam and took blood samples. She and Leslie were so compassionate and easy to talk and answered all of our questions. We were given meds to help with arthritis and pain and it helped our dog to feel better and walk pain free again. Dr. Howell has called twice since then to check on our dog and give follow ups on the blood test results. We can't say enough about the good job Helmwwod does providing healthcare to our pets. Kudos to Shanoa for the excellent job in grooming our dogs too. Keep up the good work! read more
