Spent $1,000 on four tall emerald green arbor vitae. Took detailed notes from the owner on exactly how to properly plant them and followed those instructions to the letter. All four died within a week. The smaller trees beside the dead ones in the photo were purchased from Greenspring Nursery and planted ourselves within three days of the ones from Hemphill's, and they are thriving. When I contacted Hemphill's, I was told they don't warrant their plants unless they do the planting (a fact that was not disclosed to me at the time of purchase). Avoid this place and go to Greenspring instead; I've since purchased several other plants from them and all are healthy and doing well. read more

Placed an order online on April 21st, receive an email stating I won't be charged until item ships. On April 27th I notice I was charged on the 21st yet no emails about shipment of my item. I called and asked about my item after being on hold for about 8 minutes or so I am told it's shipping today. The woman who said she was President of the company became very belligerent when I asked why I got an email stating I wouldn't be charged until it ships and yet I charged 6 days ago. She said that's how it works on the website because of PayPal. So then WHY send me an email telling me something else??? And if that wasn't enough I paid for UPS shipping (The only option available on the site) and they shipped it USPS. read more

The women running this business is a complete wacko. She has no idea on how to treat people or deal with the public. I called and ordered some mulch and asked her a few questions about quaility and where it came from. (Some mulch comes from junk wood and is full of termites) She acted like I was trying to source her provider. Weeks later I called to schedule a pick up and arrived a short while after I called again. She wrote my cell number down in her book (from the call a few weeks prior) and proceeded to tell me that she knew that "I was the person calling and giving her a hard time a few weeks ago"...keep in mind this was a few weeks prior to my visit. She then bragged about how "nothing gets by her, etc." Well, my checkbook has and will for the remainder of my life. prior to this my wife bought a bunch of plants from her (several thousands of dollars worth) - Well, that has been stopped!! Purchased a cord of firewood that was sold to us as seasoned. After hauling firewood 1/2 mile via a wheelbarrow in the snow to where it was stacked, found out that the wood was unseasoned. Moisture meter read up to 40% moisture. Hemphills would not work with us on compensation for wood that could not be used this season. It also took several phone calls for them to respond to the problem. Will not purchase firewood or garden merchandise from this business in the future. read more

I have never written a poor review...only positive but I was extremely disappointed in the service we received at Hemphill's Pond and Garden Center. The owner was rude. She told my husband not to put his hand in the water...which he wasn't...he was showing our son the tadpoles. I then had plants to purchase and wasn't sure if I was allowed to take the plants out or not (after the tadpole debacle) She huffed and puffed when she realized that I wanted three plants and she only had brought one bag. We spent almost $100 there...trying to support small business during this time. I will never go there again. I will spend my hard earned money somewhere else. Hemphill's Pond and Garden Center cleaned our two ponds today (one large and one Small) and they did an extraordinary job. They arrived on time and diligently worked on the ponds. I would be remiss if I didn't tell you the ponds had not been cleaned in a couple of years and they were really a huge mess. The gentlemen were extremely helpful and courteous. Look guys, it's Easter Sunday and they were open. This is, simply put, a Mom and Pop business who were as cute as they could be. We decided today (well, like an hour beforehand) that we wanted a fountain for our little pond. We know nothing about ponds. Told them so over the phone. They said if we were willing to drive over, they'll teach us some things. Who does that anymore? They had a selection that blew the place in Cockeysville away and at better prices. Sure, she said wait a minute whenever somebody pulled up to buy an Easter plant, but that's why they opened today and she told me so. They are old school, but honest and it all got done. We now have people stopping already to look at our fountain. If you need crap and stupid people, go to the big box stores. If you can spare a few minutes and have a personable experience go here. Avoid this place. They are overpriced and the customer service is horrible. The woman manager (owner) is a real pill to deal with. We have bought plants and some have died and some are OK. They dont want to hear about the dead ones. Also, with mulch, they will give you absolute level buckets. There is not one ounce of extra. Right up the road (South on 152 about 2~ miles) is Kingsfork Farm and they give you heaping scoops of mulch and are cheaper to boot. Again, avaoid Hemphill's Garden Center. There are too many cheaper and better quaility options with much nicer people to deal with! read more

First time buyer at Hemphills, though I'm an experienced koi pond owner and I've bought many pumps, filters, etc for many years now. I usually buy from Pondliner (btw, they are excellent, no hassle returns) but found the Tetra filter at Hemphill's to be cheaper, so I bought it at Hemphill's to save a couple of bucks. I ended up returning the Tetra filter and called Hemphill's to see how they wanted to handle it, mail it back, etc. I never received a call back. So I mailed the filter back, and my Visa shows a credit short $8.25. When I called to see why I was credited for $46.75 instead of $54.95, they said they charge a 15% restocking fee and it's in the fine print. NICE!!! Go to Pondliner.com. They ROCK and you won't deal with this garage mom and pop charge you 15% restocking bullshit. read more

My wife purchased a $38 dollar plant that shortly after purchased died. My wife was greeted at the door with , "Whats that?"...followed by "Your just like your parents..blah blah blah". "We don't give refunds for plants". OK...so I accept the no refund policy however I WILL NOT Tolerate rude comments from the owner. We ordered an item online from this so-called Garden and Aquatic Center. they lost our order, did not even bother calling and/or emailing us. we called them 10 days later, she said " I am to busy - what do you need? " . I called her following business day, she put me on hold and never picked up. As a courtesy she did not even bother or make an effort to call me back and fix the situation. I called her again, and again.... finally she picked up the phone and she said I am sending it to you today, and with an attitude saying " If you don't want it you can cancel the order". We moved into a new house and the fish pond that it came with suddenly began leaking water. Being new to fish ponds I called several area water garden service centers, and Hemphill's called me back immediately and was able to send a team out within the hour to replace our cracked pond liner. They cut back the vegetation and counseled me on how to take care of the fish for the winter and were lovely to work with. I really appreciated their rapid response especially right before Thanksgiving - the alternative was leaving the fish to die while we were away. I had Hemphills come out for an estimate on a pond we wanted to have installed. A nice, polite, seemingly knowledgeable young man came out. We never heard back for a couple weeks regarding the estimate. I called and was told someone would call me back. They never did. I went to their store in person. Again I was put off. I never got that estimate and we put one in ourselves. Thanks for wasting our time and providing us with nothing! I was so surprised because I have bought several trees and plants from this seemingly well run business. Now we drive on by. I recommend Gene's Evergreens. They have never left me hanging! read more

I regret that I did not read these reviews prior to trying to do business with I believe to be the same woman that the prior customers are speaking about. I called a few months ago needing someone to take a look at a Koi Pond that I inherited with the purchase of my home. Spoke with a woman, Betty and she said she would send someone out. No one came and no one called not that day or any time thereafter. A few months went by and figuring that something prob came up, thought I would give it another try. This time she wanted pictures, gave her that. Then she said we can't come to DC to look at the pond unless you are going to get it fixed on the spot. I said I don't know anything about the pond, what is wrong with it. How can I commit to that without knowing what's going on and the cost? Then she said well we will charge you 89 buck to come out. (Everyone, DOESN'T THE WEBSITE SAY WE SERVICE WASHINGTON, DC???) ok fine, I went on and agreed. Well AGAIN they never showed. I called and she said your vm was full. I told her my vm fills quickly and I asked her if she had the capability to text me. That I always get those messages and she said she could text and so I rescheduled. Additionally, this time I assured her that someone is always there Sunday mornings and the gate would be open just come on back. AGAIN they were a no show. There was no text. I call on Monday, no answer. After reading the reviews I believe she watched my number come across all day before answering the business phone like a bear. I could not believe that she answered the business phone in that manner and I was going to give her an opportunity to explain. This woman then says I can't get in touch with you. Don't you have a place you can call closer to DC! Then she says you never gave me a credit card to hold. I started thinking, this must not be Betty because whoever this wacko is, she is talking about things never brought up before. When i fired back at her, she hung up. I called back and told her I was going to yelp and she told me to get a life. Do not do business with these unprofessional people. We had a pond installed this past summer and we could not be happier. They did a fantastic job and gave us the best price. Once the flowers were planted around the pond, it looked like it had been there a long time. Just before the blizzard, I called about getting a heater (we should have already purchased one, but... ) and Betty was very accommodating. She had to close the store briefly, but assured me that she would call when she was back and she did. Any questions we have had were answered by Betty or her son Matt. While they are not conveniently located to us, we would make the trip there for any pond supplies we might need. read more

They have cancelled 3 times on me for ridiculous reasons and have made no attempt whatsoever to prioritize rescheduling me. The woman I spoke with made a lot of excuses and was downright rude to me when I called after the third time that they didn't show up. They never even called to let me know they weren't coming. I ordered pond supplies on May 20, 2016. No UPS tracking number was supplied. My credit card was charged on May 20. I finally received the supplies on 6/2 pm after I called Hemphills. After talking to them I realize they are pretty much rinky-dink operation. On 6/3 I logged into my credit card account to find that Hemphills charged my account another charge of $5.50 dated May 31. I called Hemphills to find they did not answer but instead had me leave a message. So instead I handled the unauthorized charge with my credit card company. I requested a estimate and was quoted $85; I told Ms. Betty that I have other estimates lined up that were free. She said she would match that and we made an appointment for 8/19/2016 at 9am. I was exited to move forward on that Friday, 9am came and went. Finally, a young man showed up at 10am. I took him to the area and we discussed what I wanted, I asked questions, they were answered. I was told that he would try to get my quote to me by the end of the day. I still haven't received my quote......I'm not chasing anyone to spend my money. We purchased a red dogwood for my wife's birthday in mid April, 2011. I followed the instructions given by the nursery and planted the tree the next day. The last day of the month after 1 & 1/2 weeks from planting we noticed the tree was not budding. after checking we realized the tree was dead and had been when purchased. I called the nursery and was told they don't warrant their trees unless they plant them, something we were not told when we purchased the tree. I called this business asking for some help regarding some help with a pump that I have on site at an apartment complex. I also encountered the "wacko". On Friday, she was extremely helpful on offering her company's services. Today however, was a completely different story. I made two appointments with this company to check a problem with my pond. Both times a specific hour for a visit was scheduled and neither times did anyone show up. I waited all day for them. When I finally called the shop to ask about the scheduled appointments the woman who answers the phone said that they were just too busy to let me know that they would not be there. When I was shopping around to upgrade my pond Hemphill was one of 4 companies I spoke with. They were responsive, their price was in line with the others but the others did not follow up timely so I went with Hemphill even though they had no creativity in the design. I had been Basically they rebuilt the exact same pond I had before but much deeper and an upgraded filtration system. I was working to get this done before the weather turned cold so I moved forward with a simple rebuild. The work was fine and they basically met the deadline. The problem has been the lack of support and service. They are not responsive to e-mails. They tell you they are coming and don't show. I have had a lot of problems with the filtration system clogging up and I am not sure if it is the way they installed the equipment or something else but I had never had that issue before. I would not recommend them if you want a company who is going to stand by their work and provide ongoing support.
