The meat department has changed and not for the better. The prepacked chicken does not last until the expiration date. The 80/20 beef is now prepacked and it is dry. I don't want a dry burger. This is our local grocery store close to our neighborhood. That means we go there often to buy vegetables fruits meat pretty much everything I hate to write something negative about this place but I feel like there is a lot of improvement that they can do with the hygiene of the productslast night, we went to purchase some meat and wanted to buy some fruits and found that most of the grapes in the section were bad. I ordered two trays of egg roll deli sandwiches for an event lunch. The hen house deli staff was super helpful and accommodating. The food was ready on time and packaged very nice. The sandwiches were high quality and piled high with delicious deli meat. I will definitely be ordering again for my next event. read more

I'm giving 1-star for the delivery option. My rant is that I went to the hen house website, and ordered for home delivery due to these viral times. Now I'm mostly happy with the order but the strawberries delivered to us are so moldy they look like a science experiment. Now that in and of itself isn't so bad. Stuff happens, I get it. My problem is that when I called the store expecting them to credit my account, or allow me to pickup a replacement the next day that's not what was offered. Instead the person I spoke with gave me the run around and blamed instant cart for the problem now I'm on a 3 hour hold hoping they will eventually pick up the phone. I would agree that instant cart would be the people to call/blame if I hired them to run a Hen House errand for me. That's not what I did. I used instant cart because the partner service recommended by Hen House. Hen House should a) not have merchandise this spoiled out for sale, and b) take more responsibility for the problem, not passing the buck. read more

I found it insane to go inside the store and learn that during a pandemic, almost none of the employees wear masks and gloves. Not even in the produce department! If there were not a pandemic, I still expect the produce department to wear gloves. They clearly don't care about creating a healthy environment for grocery shopping. read more

These Hen House locations are simply poison warehouses. Literally next to nothing is organic in the produce section anymore. Plus with these prices you may as well eat out every night if you're going to eat pesticides, herbicides and insecticides. Hen House is a little more upscale than some of the other stores in the area, and offers a lot of variety and higher end options. Hen House feels a bit pricier than Hy-Vee or Price Chopper on some of the more staple items. Their bakery here is awesome, and I think they make the best sheet cakes around, with Hy-Vee being a close second. I really like getting the Tuscan salad you can have made while you shop. Great quick and easy dinner. read more

Nice to visit since the 119th Hen House is being rebuilt. Still, it doesn't feel laid out well, and the overall feel is more "just like a grocery store" vs. a place to purchase your food and then later prepare it. Felt very 1980s. read more

I used to love this store when Covid first came out. They were very strict. that has changed. Now employees just need a "doctors excuse' not to wear a mask. Several don't wear the mask properly, i.e. they wear it under the nose. Duh. I will not shop here again. I don't feel safe and don't feel this store cares about my safety. read more

This is my typical Hen House location. Usually pretty good, it's Leawood, so you can't expect anyone to be overly nice. Whatever. I will say, however, if you encounter Allie at the deli counter, just come back another time. I've never seen a young person move so slowly, and she simply could not figure out how to help anyone to move customers through. I just walked away after 10 min when she finally said my salad would not be ready for another 20 min. Poor young people. Sigh. read more

The market has a good selection and I like the deli counter. It was rather empty and there were no lines (love this!). Coupons are also doubled by Hen House. Drawback: Prices tend to be significantly higher than the competition. They also didn't carry any Soy Yogurts, unlike Hyvee or Consentino's, which does. read more

Kind of expensive on some stuff but the fresh fish and deli blow every other grocery store out of the water. I can't even get them to let me sample the meats at Hy-Vee when I ask and the people here offer everytime. They will cut it to you desire thickness and it is always so fresh and delicous. This is the only grocery store I will buy seafood at. It is priced right and they have 3 different kinds of wild salmon right now. How awesome is that. read more

I will not be shopping here again and will recommend my mother and all of her friends who are residents at Tallgrass Creek not to visit this store either, as they do not do anything to prevent persons from shopping who refuse to wear masks. If you want to attract residents of retirement communities you should have a member of management greeting shoppers (not putting that burden on the employees cleaning carts) at the front door and enforcing wearing of masks (as well as employees in the store alert to any shoppers without masks on). It's a matter of safety for your customers and your employees. read more

Prices are a little on the high end. The fish selection is great, the fruit/veggie selection could be much better, unless you are looking for apples, cause there are about 15 different kinds available. The florist section is awesome as well, carrying some plants/flowers that are not available in most places. read more

Lack of customer care and concern I recently visited the Hen House near 135th and Metcalf in Overland Park Ks. I have frequented this store as it is convenient to work and home that is until I actually see how they treat loyal customers. On 3-30-16 I was walking down the salad dressing aisle and did not notice that someone had spilled oil dressing all over the floor. There was no way to see it as the Floor is dark and shiny normally. I slipped and fell and broke my arm. When I got to my senses there was no one around to help me. I went to the front of the store and told two supervisors there was a dangerous spill and all they said was OK, not a sorry or we will take care of it or can we help you. My arm was obviously broken and I was covered in salad oil. Salad oil shows up very well on a light blue shirt so there was no mistake something happened. What amazed me was that I received no help checking out and no offer to carry my groceries. I was very upset and just needed someone to seem to care. A day later I called the Balls corporate headquarters to let them know what happened. They said that procedures were not followed and they would take care of it. Also someone finally said SORRY. I was contacted that first week by a few people from the store that seemed to try to make it my fault. They kept asking if I picked up the glass from the bottle. I told them the glass was removed when I got there all that was left was the oil all over the floor. I was told they would get back to me. Well here it is a month later and even with repeated emails to the company nothing has happened. I also emailed their insurance company and the store manager asking that the tape of my fall be kept. Guess what no response and then I was told that I used the wrong email. Please I know how to hit reply on email. I then realized that the game had begun. Now let me compare this Kansas City family owned chain to another family owned chain of grocery stores. The Cosentino family also owns stores in my local area. When my family and friends were helping out a local charity called SafeHome (a battered women's shelter locally) this chain of stores heard about it from a friend and promptly delivered at their cost 9 trays of food to my front porch within hours of hearing that the shelter had lost their cook for the holidays. They also at their cost donated means for over 90 residents of the shelter during the holidays. I write this to let you know that there are stores out there that actually practice what they preach. I encourage you to keep this in mind the next time you just want to run into a store because it is convenient. The Cosentino's store I now visit has asked about my arm each time I shop or eat their. What a difference. Don't make the same mistake I made and go back to the store that didn't care about the fall (with my bruises and cast on my arm) and spend over $700.00 and still not have anyone say they were sorry. Guess I finally learned my lesson about convenience verses places that care. I encourage you to do the same. read more

They don't have THE BEST prices, but they do have some of the best quality foods with a variety in the store. However, I have 1 HUGE gripe. Every time I buy fresh shrimp, it is always sold as "deveined" but I always spend 20-30 minutes deveining the shrimp. It's outrageous that they charge $17/pound for it and then I have to spend a majority of my night being grossed out. The last batch I bought even had the "saltwater" taste to it. So, I'll just start buying shrimp at Sam's Club, where I KNOW it's deveined and I don't have to do it when I get home. They also didn't put the flowers on my wedding cake, at first they tried to charge me $40 for 6 teacup roses, after bringing it to their attention 3 times, the floral department decided it was in their best interest to charge me $4. They also didn't put the flowers on the cake when they delivered it to the reception hall, which of course the set up & delivery fee was $50. I've just had bad experiences with those 2 things. I've also found expired sausage and cooking oils on the shelves, so buyer beware! They usually do a good job at having good fresh produce and other items, but I always check the dates when I buy something there. read more

This cashier was so rude. My sister and I went in line to pay and before hand she asked this guy in front of us if he had a hen house card or rewards but when we went to go pay she didn't even greet us nor did she ask if we had a hen house card. They also false advertise their items sometimes because it's happen to me a couple times where they said it's off but when you go pay it doesn't show up. We gave her our hen house card and she said something along the lines of "looks like you didn't save anything, nice try." I didn't feel like arguing with her though because her tone was rude and I work at a customer service place so I know what it feels like to be rude to the customers and vice veras. read more

As grocery stores go in Kansas....Hen House is tops. It carries quality fruits and veggies and offbeat things you wouldn't think would be in Kansas, i.e. Key Limes, which I looked everywhere else for. The space, as many other grocery stores in Kansas, is clean and bright. The location has easy parking and is easily accessible. read more

It feels much more upscale than the one by my house (College and Quivira), and has some neat options that the other doesn't, such as a decent cheese selection. Nice atmosphere, a major plus is free wifi. I often make out my grocery list on Evernote, and it's nice to know that I can pull it up on my iPad with out having to use the 3G. The place is clean, and the staff is very helpful. Only drawback is no self check out lanes. read more

When I moved from Lenexa to Overland Park, I changed markets. I used to go to the Hen House in Lenexa where they would special order things not on their shelves and call you when it came in. Here, you ask for a special order and they tell you to check back. No phone call. The worst part it, the item never seems to arrive on the shelve. I love the bread here and the cheaper prices. I don't like their fresh cookies. Sadly there are items I like that I can't get here like Izzy's, fresh ground bison meat, and almond meal that I end up going to Whole Foods for. Their cheese and deli long always takes way too long. Literally 3 people ahead in line and it takes 15 minutes just to get served. It definitely makes a quick trip to the grocery store way too long. read more
