Bichelmeyer's is a multi-generational butcher shop offering a wide assortment of prime meats: beef, poultry and lamb. Although we've served their meats for special occasions, this was my first visit to their store to place an order. It reminds me of a classic old-school butcher shop I used to visit as a youngster many years ago. The first thing you notice when you enter is the massive display case of meats. It must be 50 feet long. It's important that you head to the center to pull a number as it gets busy. I arrived around Noon on a Tuesday, pulled number 72 and they were serving customer 60. After about 20 minutes, it was my time to order. I ordered a six pound beef tenderloin roast and the butcher offered to trim it, which saved my wife lots of time when preparing the meat for cooking. We've been impressed by everything we've purchased from Bichelmeyer's. It provides exceptional quality meat like you'd find at Kansas City's best restaurants. read more

My wife and I came here on a Saturday morning to get some of the tacos that are sold here then and we are so glad we did! We got 5 huge tacos- carnitas, carne Asada, chicken tinga, pulled beef, and al pastor. All of them were great and the portions were HUGE. My first visit was for the Saturday tacos, my second visit was for more tacos, but I was smart enough to bring a cooler and take home some things from the butcher case. The Chuleta (pork chop) taco is one of the best finds in Kansas City. A smoked pork chop cut into small chunks and piled high on a freshly grilled tortilla right in front of you. Add onions and cilantro and then pick your salsa from the condiment table and for $3.00 you have a righteous handful of flavor. Not only did we bring home a roast that we prepared for Sunday dinner today, we stocked up on sausages and bought some hard to find beef bacon for a friend. My 3 dogs were as pleased as I was when we brought them each a cured pig ear to chew on for the afternoon. Bichelmeyer has great quality, friendly customer service, and fair pricing. A couple of things: I bought a pork belly here once to make a porchetta, the skin was like shoe leather. I felt ripped off. I don't know the difference between the pig that has skin the will roast to cracklings and the pig with the skin that roasts to hard plastic, but THEY ought to and I shouldn't have gotten the latter Everything else that I've gotten there has been good quality. I wanted to do a Porchetta for Christmas. Unfortunately I didn't realize that I should have ordered the Porchetta at Thanksgiving. Fritz's recommended calling Bichelmeyer. I headed down on December 23rd and the place was bustling with people picking up their prime rib roasts and summer sausage. In the midst of the chaos, I got to witness the art and skill of the butcher breaking down the hog for my Porchetta. He took the time and care to let me know how many pounds of meat I would end up with, honored my request to open up the loin and score the skin. I left with my 27# specialty cut of pork belly w/loin attached (enough pork for my celebration and 2 separate meals) and a complimentary 2020 calendar! Hot damn! This summer has magically transformed into the Summer of Street Tacos for me, and I couldn't have imagined that some of the best ones I'd dive into would be inside of a butcher shop. Bichelmeyers was very busy on a Saturday with a long rows full of every type of meat imaginable. Looking down at the end of the counter, you'll see a mob of people grouped together after one thing: Tacos. Loaded up, lightly fried tacos. While a bit of a wait, it's totally worth it. They have loads of options for tacos, a hot sauce bar (pro tip: get your sauces in little cups while you wait in line so you don't have to cut through everyone to get it afterwards), and the smell the entire time is amazing. I went with my classics, the Carne Asada and Pastor. The Pastor stole the show, it was seriously phenomenal. Nice pineapple finish, smoky flavor and well-trimmed. These tacos are legit in size. While I love all the other taco shops around, I have to say in comparison, the tacos at Bichelmeyers would be considered double or triple tacos. They're loaded up - don't forget napkins! I need to try the meat here, and if it's anything like the quality of tacos, it's bound to be awesome. Check them out! read more

This was my first time to visit Bichelmeyer meats. I thought it would be tiny and hard to find. It's the size of a grocery store and is in plain site. The place is huge. The cuts of meats are to the side, the Mexican food is in the back. They have a numbering system so you need to wait until they call. Going in there will cause your mouth to water just looking at all the meat.I don't eat steak, but I'd eat one of their t-bones. The cuts are huge and prices are fair. Today they had pigs ears and bones for dogs. I was there with a group of Yelpers for the Taco crawl. Their prices are very reasonable, $3 for a filled taco, with enough filling and an extra tortilla to make 2. I had the pastor tacos, but it was a tough choice between that and the tamales. I ended up buying pigs ears for the dogs, but I'll be back to buy some meat. And then maybe tamales. read more

Living and working in the Wyandotte and Leavenworth County area, I only buy meat from two butcher shops. Steve's Meats has a smaller shop but the meat they sell is very good quality. Bichelmeyer Meats too has great quality meat, but they have a larger shop and larger selection, with a shorter drive from WYCO/ LVCO. If you're going to grill or smoke meat for a shindig or family meal, you can't go wrong either way! read more

Besides being just a great shopping experience, Bichelmeyer's wonderful butcher shop has the best cuts of meats, chicken and pretty much anything you may need. My favorite thing is their chorizo which is made on site, still in the casing which gives you beautiful chunks of chorizo to cook with. Low on fat and huge on flavor. I won't get it anywhere else! These things are loaded with meat - I could only finish two of them - and are packed with flavor. If you love street tacos, come and give these a try. Point blank: This butcher shop is legit! Today was my first visit, and I was expecting a tiny little place, but nope, it's huge. It has the longest, most drool inducing meat counter that I've ever seen, with a huge variety of cuts from a large variety of animals. The place was SLAMMED, too! I love that you have to take a number, it's such an awesome throwback to the way things used to be done. BUT here's the deal: I wasn't here for cuts of meat. No, I was here for tacos. And sweet baby Jesus, these tacos are the best! Served only on Saturdays, for $1.50 a pop you get some of the best tacos I've had in KC. I chowed down on a couple of pastor tacos as well as a couple of barbacoa. Both were great, but the pastor was most definitely the winner. Double-wrapped in corn tortillas, and topped with a mound of cilantro and onion, they were perfection. With a squeeze of lime, I didn't even feel the need for any salsa. Even cooler, they're probably the biggest street tacos I've found in KC. I bought four, as that's what I usually eat from other taco places in town. By two I was full, by three I was stuffed. But no man left behind, I was going to finish that fourth taco. They're too good to waste. I may have been miserable when I waddled out the door, but only in the most delicious sense. Pro tip: Bring cash. You can pay for the tacos with your card, but it looks to me the only way to get a drink is from the soda machines. Bichelmeyers is getting a lot of attention these days, and to be fair to them, not always for the right reason. They're become a darling of locations with good street style Mexican tacos, and it seems to have detracted a bit from their true purpose. It's not just a taco stand. That's a relatively recent development. It's a 100+ year-old butcher shop that hosts a taco stand on Saturdays. But that's not a criticism of Yelpers. We tend to get excited about little things like this. To be perfectly clear: me included. On Saturdays they fire up a taco stand on one end of the shop, and the tacos are fine, unique to my experience. For my personal taste, they're not the best in KCK. You may not agree. I can say the technique they're using to make these is not what is typically found in the plethora of marvelous joints this part of this city boasts, ala Bonito Michoacan, Carniceria El Torito 2, Tortilleria San Antonio, El Camino Real and others. Very good, but not great, and that's more about the end result: flavor, seasoning of the meat, etc. The taco shells are dipped in oil and warmed before being served with meats so they're much studier than those mentioned. To my taste could use a bit of salt, maybe improved seasoning of the meats. But lets get to the star of the venue. Meat. Lots of it. Carve up by large, burly mean in bloody aprons, in forms those of you shopping at Hen House, Sprouts and Whole Foods may find uncomfortable. Tongues, trotters, liver, cheeks, pig ears next to superb rib eyes, ribs, ground beef, filets, etc. Meat cornucopia. I've purchased beef cheeks here, rib eyes, burger, pork, and their secret which can be difficult to find: probably the best beef jerky and smoked beef sticks in city as far as I know. Stupidly good. Bichelmeyers is a Kansas City treasure, and you should get there. Soon, and find out why. And if you're on the hunt for great tacos on a Saturday, score! Hint: their tamales may be the best in town. Been doing some taco research online recently and to my surprise I've learned that a butcher shop in KCK with a name that sounds anything but Mexican serves some highly regarded, authentic Mexican tacos. Fresh off my recent trip to Cancun Fiesta Fresh where I found the street tacos satisfying and totally delicious, I decided to take a quick trip to Bichelmeyer for a comparison. Bichelmeyer is located just north of the river on Cheyenne Ave in KCK (if you know where Quick's BBQ is, it's directly across the street). Tacos are not their main business. Bichelmeyer is a butcher shop, not a restaurant. The incidental table and chairs on hand for taco eaters don't change that fact. A Saturday-only affair, the taco counter is hardly noticeable upon entry and may not even be manned at all times. Rest assured, though, fresh corn tortillas, warm pork and shredded beef and diced onion, cilantro, salsa and guacamole sauce are standing by at-the-ready. Both Elizabeth and I went for one of each. The pork, I believe, was adobada, reddish in color, clearly marinated in chiles. Mine was tender and crazy-flavorful. The diced onion and cilantro on top added just a little contrast and the thin avocado sauce cooled it off nicely. In seconds it was gone, inhaled by the vortex that was my digestive system. The shredded beef (barbacoa) was exceedingly tender. In fact, we both found it to be a little too wet, perhaps having sat in its own juices too long. It had broken down into somewhat of a soft, beefy mush, too uniform in texture. Drained only slightly or perhaps not shredded quite so fine, it would have been outstanding with the red salsa I drizzled over top, again accompanied by diced onion and cilantro. Once consumed, the takeaway was that we had definitely just eaten flavorful, cheap, authentic street food. Healthy it was not. Manicured by a chef, neither. No, these were straight-up street tacos - a little raunchy but filled with good flavor. Executed with a little more attention to detail, they'd have been great. Forced to choose, I'd give the edge to Cancun Fiesta Fresh, but they were nearly identical in preparation and flavor. CCF gets an edge in that their taco preparation is the focus of their business, and that comes through in what you eat. read more

If you like street tacos, you will be happily surprised to find some of the best in the metro at a butcher. Grab something to grill for dinner and something yummy for lunch. This was the first stop on September's taco crawl per a recommendation. I broke my one taco per crawl stop rule and ordered a pork chop and a mixed meat taco. The pork chop was amazing. I don't know what they marinate or season with, but that was probably the best pork chop I have had. The mixed meat has beef, pork, chorizo, bacon, and hot dogs all mixed together. hole-y mole-y their street tacos kick ass. Went on Sat June 30 at lunch time. BUSY! You wait in line, you smell the delicious tacos and admire the raw meat they sell while you wait in line. They had 5 types of tacos. I can't remember them all! Something like this: Pulled pork,,Steak, Barbacoa, Pork Steak, Carnitas- We tried all but the Pulled pork and they were all REALLY REALLY good. The tomatillo sauce is spicy and great. Avocado creamy sauce also good. They take cash and credit but the coke machine is cash only. A couple of tables where you grab a seat after you get your food, put your plate on top of the grease from the previous diner and dig in. IF it was pastor. I even asked again to make sure they understood my order when they were making my tacos. Finely chopped stewed meat without the characteristic chile and achiote color or flavor. There was at least 1/3 pound of meat per taco (why it now costs $5 per taco) making into something other than a street taco. The balance was not right at all. My son is moving to Switzerland in a few weeks so this was very likely the last time he will ever eat a Bichelmeyer's taco. A family of German butchers, five generations of Bichelmeyer's have been providing meat to Kansas City, KS and the surrounding area since the 1890s. Bichelmeyer Meats was founded by John F. Bichelmeyer in 1946. Today it is owned and operated by John's sons, Jim and Joe, and by his grandson, Matt. I had heard that Bichelmeyer's had good street tacos, so I headed over there on a Saturday to try it out. Wow! These are as good as my favorite tacos at Bonito Michoacan! I had the al pastor and barbacoa. Delicious and authentic! The barbacoa was my favorite, as always. It made me laugh that they serve the tacos on the styrofoam meat trays that they use at the meat counter. While I was there I picked up a few sausages, the spicy Polish was fabulous, not to fatty, excellent flavor and good snap to the skin. The cheese knockwurst was good too!
