The Van Sicklen family/Gravesend cemetery, the oldest burial ground in New York! It was actually founded by Lady Moody herself and some suspect she was also buried here herself. The cemetery was established by Lady Moody back in 1643, and the 350 gravestones in it are from mid 18th cent to the mid 1900s. The Lady Moody House was never actually her house per say. It was named after her as it was subsequently built on the land that she purchased. And most likely, it was built in the 1700s by the infamous and influential, wealthy Van Sicklen family (that subsequently gave so much historical and geographic significance to Gravesend and Brooklyn). So who's this Lady Moody? She was one of the first, if not the first woman in the New World, who was allowed to purchase/own land. Wealthy English woman who took refuge in the New World in the 1600s. And so among the lands that she purchased was the area we all now know as Gravesend. Lady Moody founded Gravesend. And the house that stands upon her land is one of the oldest houses in Brooklyn and is one of the few surviving examples of 18th century Dutch-American farmhouse architectural styles in the United States.

Carousel hours and ticket prices are posted on their website. Lots to do. Try to go here early before it gets too crowded. Wear comfortable shoes.

One can only imagine what it looked like from this location. The firefighters from Rockaway must have seen what looked like Armageddon in the distance, yet they went toward it. It's a part of New York as much as Grand Terminal or Penn Station is. Oculus gets busy on a daily basis because of all the things I mentioned above. The shops in the Oculus are nice and tend to be on the higher end of a price range. You have a variety of selections from Apple Store to luxury brands. The service at any store is pretty representative of what the Oculus aspires to be; excellence. It's beautiful and bright and at its core, a beacon of hope.

Swimming is strongly discouraged and downright dangerous. One can easily view the Quester 1 located in the middle of Coney Island Creek from Kaiser Park or Calvert Vaux Park. The Quester 1 makes for great photos for photographers and a well known site for drone operators to snap pics. Great landmark for kayakers to get up and personal as well. It's history is amazing considering it was all home built. More information on this can be found at the Coney Island History Project's webpage. For decades it has been Coney Island's very own"Roadside attraction", with very few even knowing of it's existence. It's free and the hours are 24/7 for viewing. Pet friendly.

There's parking available upon arrival. There's seating alongside the body of water. There's various activities available to do here including walking, taking a seat to overlook the water or people-watch, picnic, BBQ or grill, fishing, and running or jogging. The area is definitely kept clean. There's plenty of trash cans available here as well. I'm looking forward to returning here for some more relaxation.

Walk to the back of the lot, past the handicap parking spots, where you will find a map with information about the village buildings. A wheelchair ramp (aka a dirt road) goes around a staircase that leads down from the kiosk and buildings signed as the 'entrance'. A loop road makes a beautiful walk along the Morris Canal. There are some informational signs canal side. A picnic area is on the return side of the loop with a few seating areas over looking the canal. Check the website for days when docents are available if you want more information about the village. There is also a museum and a library - check the website for hours. Whether you come for the history, a beautiful walk, or fishing, Waterloo Village is a worthwhile stop.
