When open for public tours Noah's Ark is a great place to take your family. The grounds and sanctuary are beautiful. There are a lot of grassy areas and colorful blooms. They have picnic areas if you want to bring your lunch. Peacocks roam the grounds freely and will sometimes pose for pictures. The animals at Noah's Ark are rescues and are unable to survive in the wild. Some of the animals were rescued during drug raids, some were surrendered from struggling zoos, and others come from research labs. You should definitely check this hidden gem out when they are open to the public. Admission is free but donations are welcomed.

With that being said, I don't judge people who go to RESPONSIBLE breeders for animals; however, I strongly urge everyone to consider rescuing an animal from a shelter or group if you don't absolutely NEED a designer dog. I also advocate for looking beyond your local shelter to find your next furry family member. At the beginning of the year I was looking for a dog. I had something in mind, but was open to other possibilities. I was trying to find a Boxer-mix, something that would have a short coat, wouldn't shed and wouldn't drool a lot. Barnesville Ga Pound Pups was posting animals for adoption via Facebook in an effort to bring attention to pets waiting for a home in a shelter with a ridiculously high kill rate - many people dispose of unwanted dogs in the rural area and often times when people call the authorities about stray dogs they are told to just shoot them - Animal Control and the Humane Society are really the only places these animals have to go and their chances are slim in the overflowing shelter. Adoption primarily relies on the work of volunteers taking the dogs out to adoption events. Back to my story. I was on the hunt for the perfect dog and my mom happened to stumble across a picture of "Echo" while cross-posting for different dog rescue organisations. She was labeled as a Boxer-mix and the look on her face was so sad, confused and longing that it stuck with both of us. She emailed me the post and I said, "I want that dog. I have to get THAT dog." Unfortunately, we came across this listing the day after she was schedule for euthanization and we cursed the bad timing. However, my mom mentioned how sad the situation was and the woman in charge of the Facebook page told us that the Humane Society let her pull the dog out. The dog was waiting at her home and would either need to find a forever home, have another rescue claim her or she'd most likely go back and be put down. Well, because the Humane Society was so accommodating, they worked with a bunch of us through Pound Pups to get her set up for adoption so the rescue group could get her all the way from Georgia to Minnesota and to her final destination in Illinois. She was vaccinated, spayed, looked over and given a clean bill of health. Even though they have more animals than they know what to do with you can tell they take good care of all of them. The dog came to me happy and healthy. She is amazing (even though she is NOT a Boxer and sheds like crazy... sigh, oh well). I renamed her Georgia. We're snuggling as I write this. So please, please always make your first choice a shelter animal and don't be deterred by a little distance to get what you want.

I have been fostering with AARF for about 5 months and I love it! They offer a lot of support and…read moretraining to their volunteers and it is a really rewarding experience. I had my first foster dog for a few months and she recently got adopted to a wonderful family. I can't tell you how cool it was to help a dog who literally was on death row at a local shelter to get healthy again and then to find a new home. AARF made it a really easy and rewarding experience to volunteer and they help wonderful animals find great homes. There are other rescue groups in Atlanta and they are all doing amazing work. I'm certainly not saying AARF is any better than any other rescue group because I haven't volunteered with any others but I am saying that the people at AARF rock and I really love working with them.

Fostering an animal while it finds a home is one of the best things a person can do. Animals in tiny cages where they don't get room to run and play can get issues that can take years of training and care to treat. But, give a homeless animal a temporary home while you find a permanent one and it can learn from your other pets or just get used to what it is like to have a nice home. I have seen workers and volunteers walking the larger dogs so they can stretch their legs. We adopted 2 senior terriers from them and we appreciate the love that these dogs were shown. Brandy is a perfect fit for us and so loving. We have boarded her twice at Our Pals Place and their attentiveness to our questions, or instructions on what our Brandy eats. They let us bring her bed, blanket, toy, food and meds. Gigi, the Owner and Director is on site, and she makes everything so easy. We were on vacation, and we received two photos of our Brandy playing with large and small dogs. They introduced her to others slowly to make sure all was alright. Our Pal's Place is by far #1 in our book for this area. Privately run and not a large corporate boarding facility. I cannot say enough. Thank you, Gigi and your staff.

We found a beautiful German Shepard mix today at the Dollar Store up the street. We could tell the…read moredog belonged to someone because the dog looked very well cared for (the dog looked to be at least 80 pounds or more) but its obvious he is lost. The poor guy kept going up to every car in the parking lot hoping he would bump into someone he knew. At one point he actually ran toward the main intersection and we actually had to run out to grab him. After a quick search on Google we found Our Pal's and decided to bring the lost dog here to see if we can find his owner. We talked to Gigi the owner who was so nice and helpful. She gave us the name of a vet down the street (Shallowford Animal Hospital) who could check to see if he is chipped. We could tell Gia cared about our lost dog and even gave us a really strong leash to use... Thanks to Our Pal's we were able to find the lost dog's owner. Thanks Gia and the staff here....you guys are an animal's best friend.
