Honestly, I really didn't like this place. Okay, it was crowded, but that tends to be the case with a lot of coffee shops in the inner city. However, the tea that I ordered ended up being really strong, which sort of puts me off somewhat, and also the sugar that they had wasn't really the type of sugar that I particularly liked. Yeah, I think I'll pass on this one next time.

Favorite spot for breakfast/lunch in Sydney. The atmosphere is amazing (especially in the courtyard) and nothing on the menu disappoints. Definitely a hidden gem.

    Henry Lee's concept cafe

I admit: I get a kick out of discovering new places. Not because I want to be the first, but more that I get to share my excitement. So hear me when I shout from the proverbial rooftop - Henry Lee's is a new breed of cafe! Henry Lee's is a concept cafe kitchen - meaning it's a significant step up from SAD (Standard Australian Dining). Hidden in a Redfern laneway (entrance off Hart Street) I bounced in with excitement when I saw the space blended the indoors and outdoors with a plant-filled urban courtyard and cozy indoor tables. The menu is remarkable - it reads like a weekend trip to your favourite butcher, farmers' market, juicery and tea bar. I started with a Tippity 'Chai Chai Chai' blended with Australian native herbs and served with coconut milk - I was singing the praises of aromatic myrtle medley (cinnamon, anise, lemon) and bought a jar to take home. Henry Lee's serves breakfast until 12pm, which we sadly just missed as I had my eye on the Push The Sky Away polenta porridge with salted pecan praline, poached rhubarb and The Urban Beehive honey. Notable sides: maple bacon + gin and citrus cured salmon. But dry your eyes Andjelka - the lunch menu is equally as incredible! We all shared a bunch of moorish dishes like a Middle Eastern inspired braised lamb salad, a pickled beetroot and kale number, and a flavoursome lamb shank sandwich with in-house made gluten free seeded bread. Top marks for looking out for glutard friends! Of course no shared meal is complete without potato - and the sweet potato wedges and paprika salted fries were the table favourites! Henry Lee's has only been open two weeks but they have the sustainable, small batch ethos down packed. I was not alone in my fanfare, my brother (who's a chef) high fived the kitchen and my friends are clambering to come back. More than a kick; I'm calling Henry Lee's a 'song and dance' eating out experience!

This was a recommendation by a friend. It was worth the recommendation. It is still a bit of a hidden gem with more out of towners' going to it. However, I would recommend getting there before 9:30 am on a Sunday unless you want to wait 30 minutes until a table is free. The coffee is on point, the service was funky and at the same time highlighted why certain people should be in the industry over others. Food... all I can say, is get in there and try before it runs out! I had the blue burger and words cannot explain the mixture of flavours I tasted. From the coffee infused bacon jam to the bright coloured orange yolks of the eggs. Highly recommend. Only reason I gave it a four star, was due to our first waiter being tad slow and not providing water glasses. But once waiter was changed out, this place rocked my socks off.

Beautifully aesthetic instaworthy dishes and coffees. Ordered the red velvet latte and it was probably the best latte i've had recently. Specialty lattes are vibrant in colour! The food was impressive as well.

Tucked away in a back street is the most famous café in Redfern, Henry Lee's! This café boasts its open space and quirky fun menu! Specialty drinks are their kind of thing! White lavender hot chocolate, honeycomb affogato, Earl grey latte and more! But what I love the most... Their Taro Latte! Not too starchy, not too sweet, just how I like it!

The decor is interesting with a mix of Thai statues and paintings along with metal art of transformers at the entrance. Overall super casual! The staff was friendly and very efficient! They were quick to take our orders and food came out shortly after! I will say everything we ordered was delicious! The papaya salad, the coconut rice, soup, curries- really don't think you can go wrong. The menu is HUGE so that was the only hard part (deciding what we wanted). We did end with the mango sticky rice which was delicious but was also 24.00 which seems like a lot to me for rice and mango- it was good and beautifully presented...

Thai Pothong kept popping up and after further research, I decided it was worth the near 30-minute ride from my hotel to check it out. The area where Thai Pothong is located is a bit of ways from downtown. It feels more Australian, if you will. I loved sitting by the window and watching passersby, checking out the architecture and just enjoying the vibe. But you're here to read about the restaurant. One, it's pretty spacious, clean yet felt like home. Decent amount of traffic in there but they move efficiently. And the service was excellent. Friendly, informative and everything with a smile. But the star of the show was the food -- as it should be. It just tasted like home-cooked food done at a very high level. Like grandma's recipes being passed down. The fish cakes to start ( got two orders cuz the first was so good), the chili hot basil fried rice (again, two orders), the prawn pad thai, the ginger stir fry with chicken...all wonderful. I most definitely will be back here, Sydney.

So decided to go for a late Sunday breaky to the south end of King Street, and chose to try The Organic Pomegranate. It had changed hands and had a new name and facelift ages ago, but I never bothered to try the new place, choosing to go down the 'tried and trusted' path. Maybe I should listen to my gut... The décor is cute newtownesque and the tables offer a view of the passing parade, two standard must haves. They advertise breakfast tagines on the menu which sounded great, but I didn't see anyone else in the place eating one so I went for the safer option of scrambled eggs, bacon, mushrooms, grilled tomato and toast. We got coffee pretty quickly, but it was long gone before the food came. As was my patience. It took aaaages to come out, and we weren't the only table looking around to peer at the kitchen, hungrily. When it finally came out it was plonked on the table quickly, I had to wait and call the guy back to ask for some cracked pepper and tomato sauce. The pepper arrived but I had to go up and hover around the kitchen area to get the sauce. There was only one and a half pieces of plain toast too which is clearly not enough for a $15 breakfast. Being an organic café I was hoping for some kind of gourmet bread, but sadly no. The eggs were lukewarm, the bacon was ok, the mushrooms were garlicky and the tomato (half a roma tomato) was good. Pretty much underwhelming. Went to pay and got the chance to observe the chaos of the kitchen, it looked like no one knew what they were doing, misplacing orders, the works. We had to wait for a couple of minutes so got a good look. No tip.

Now you don't have to thanks to Arepa, the ultimate restaurant for South American street food. This cozy little place isn't much to look at on the inside. It keeps things simple and minimalist. Posters stuck up with black tape, neon logo sign, black and white menu board. The dining areas are one large wooden table to share inside and three small tables outside. The menu is simple. Four different mains to choose from, each a corn dough pouch filled with wholesome and flavourful fillings. There is a vegetarian option, vegan option, chicken option and pork option, with four chooses for extra fillings. Four dollars extra will give you a generous side of fries. Easy, tasty, satisfying. Each table has its own napkin dispenser and bottle of chilli mayo and garlic aioli. Having the two greatest dipping sauces within arms reach truly defines heaven. We only made one of our corn pockets a combo, as one side of fries was enough for me and the wife. Was there an all out sauce war between the chilli mayo and garlic aioli? You bet. The chips were cooked right on point. A delightful crunch outside with hot fluffy... cassava! Not potato but cassava, which looks like white sweet potato but tastes and feels just like potato. I honestly thought it was potato chips but no... cassava. Our corn pockets came out in good time. They might look like something you'd have as a snack but believe me these hand held corn pockets will fill you up. My black beans and feta with guasacaca (mushy avocado) was amazing. The corn pocket held the filling firmly in place. The sharpness of the feta was subdued by the smoothness of the black beens. An absolute perfect balance of flavours. This place also offers a selection of canned beers and cider. I'm not much of a tinnies fan myself but at the end of the day beer is beer, be it in a bottle or a bucket. Got to try my first watermelon pilsner. It's just what you'd expect, beer with an undercutting watermelon flavour. I had no idea it could be done. Not sure I'd order it again but it was well worth the try. $42.50 for two corn pockets, one being a combo and two beers. At first I thought it was a bit steep but realised that the beers were $7 each. Would we come back? Try and stop us.

I was pretty impressed with the 16 different flavors of cronuts/cruffins they bake each day. However after trying 4 different flavors (Red Velvet, Boston cream, Orange spice & custard and Chocolate Lavender) I wasn't impressed anymore. Mr. Holmes and Dominique Ansel preserves the meaning of quality over quantity. This is not reflected at Brewtown Newtown. Nearly all their pastries lacked a heavy dose of cream. The cronuts did not even have real layers of croissant in between. The cruffins weren't flaky enough. Sure it was covered in sugar but it was missing that sweet spot (literally). The taste wasn't quite there yet. I also got to try something I've never seen before and to be honest I'm a bit embarassed I ate something so sinfully disgusting. The Elvis burger. I have no idea why it's called that and I don't think this is in anyway a rock star burger. It's basically a burger with plain cronuts as the buns. The moment I took a bite I could feel the heart attack I'm getting when I turn 85. I tasted every drop of oil that was soaked the cronuts and the beef patty from the fryer. Elvis Burger, you won the award for the most disgusting thing I ate in 2015. Do I regret it? A little. Was it good? Kinda. Would I do it again? Probably not, I clogged enough arteries already. P.S. They also have a ridiculously long wait for brunch, I ended up getting take away. This place is kind of overhyped, given it's predictable location (the hipster neighborhood of Sydney.)

I hadn't ventured onto King Street Newtown's dining scene in some time and took to google for inspiration. Bloodwood popped onto my screen and seeing some very positive reviews I made a booking. When we arrived I was chuffed to discover that my friend had dined at the location a number of times before and he assured me that the food and service were top notch. We were greeted by super friendly staff who ensured all COVID safe precautions were followed before showing us to our table. We were sat on the upper lever just near the outside terrace. The decor is fresh and inviting with exposed brickwork and subdued colours making for an intimate and refined ambiance. Tableware is modern and funky but not at all lacking in quality Having booked a table for 2pm my dining partner and I were looking to have a loooong relaxed, and slightly boozy, lunch. Bloodwood certainly delivered with their banquet menu ensuring a flow of dishes to delight the palette. Needing to satisfy the boozy component of our get together we added the drinks package to our banquets. Be warned this is not your traditional matched wines where you get a small splash of wine with each course, this is a choice of their premium beer, champagne, white or red wine which flows continuously and with a heavier hand when it come to the pour!! This is not a drive home after your meal arrangement so please drink responsibly! The banquet starts with some hors d'oeuvre style plates including their stand out pecan pâté which you would never think was purely plant based! Delicious!! The housemade offerings of focaccia bread and pickles were also fantastic. What could well be Bloodwoods signature offering came next... the Polenta wedges with Gorgonzola dipping sauce are mouth wateringly crispy and amazing on their own or with the creamy dipping sauce. Although not on the menu our amazing and super friendly hosts treated us with a scallop which was cooked perfectly and covered in a very tasty garlic and Bloody Mary sauce that really packed a punch. The roasted pear and lentils followed and what a flavour combination they made. This was a plate that went back to the kitchen almost licked clean. I'm not a big chickpeas and lentils kind of guy but this dish was just so perfectly balanced both in flavours and textures. The meals then move into more robust and hearty offerings including a chicken, seafood and a lamb dish. These all had great individual flavours and were cooked to perfection. Last but not least was an old school favourite done with modern flair and finesse. Every grandmothers signature dish the humble trifle takes on a level of refinement with bloodwood's take on this comfort dish. The combination of custard, rhubarb and mascarpone was a sweet treat that topped our meal off perfectly. I'm not sure if it was catching up with and old friend or the meal or the combination of both but we left the restaurant about four hours after we arrived!! Mission accomplished!!! Looong lunch and a slightly drunk train ride home all ticked off the to do list!! Bloodwood is definitely worth heading to for some great food and sensational service. The value for money is really good and you won't be disappointed.
