I'm in Billings for the next two weeks and I was hoping to find a solid option for good Mexican,…read moreespecially a place with good mariscos. So with that in mind I ordered delivery from Guadalajara for some Camarones a La Diabla, a dish I order regularly. I don't want to go into these things with assumptions or negative expectations but this is not the first time I've been in Montana and Billings specifically. I have found gems in places I wouldn't have expected, but Billings has so far not been one of those places. This was not bad, but it was not good either. The sauce is very clearly ketchup based and it was hard to get past the strong ketchup flavor. It is not unheard of to make Diabla sauce using ketchup. It also isn't the best way to make a Diabla sauce IMHO but it can work. This sauce did have good heat, nothing crazy but the heat was there. There was also some other good flavors including a roasted/char character that was nice. I just had a hard time getting past the sweetness and very distinct ketchup flavor. A little too much of a tangy sweet flavor for me. The shrimp were nice size, cooked decently (I try not to judge too much on shrimp when it is delivery, but this was better than average) and enough that I'm not going to complain about portion size. The other items for the dish, rice, refried beans, salad, pico, and guacamole were all pretty good. I had them hold the sour cream. I also ordered chips and salsa which was a let down. The chips were dry aged, er, I mean stale and the salsa was very very very bland.

The food was OK (not great), but the service was awful! We waited over 30 minutes for our order and…read morethe waitress never came back to our table after taking our order. We won't go back.

Every Friday night our extended family will meet up somewhere in town for dinner. Don Luis is definitely in the rotation as one of our favorites. The remodel years ago still gives the place a fresh cantina-vibe. We were greeted & seated right away. We ordered the chips with trio dips to start; creamy hot queso, fresh guacamole & saucy salsa. Everyone at our table then ordered something different and we were all happy with our choices. I had the chili relleno entree. To be honest my measure of a Mexican restaurant is based on how well this dish is prepared. Don Luis does not disappoint. The chili was fresh, stuffed with just the right amount of cheese and smothered in the most exceptional homemade sauce. And don't even think rice on the side is just the co-star. This Mexican rice has an unexpected amazing flavor. After leaving the restaurant we were still talking about how each of our meals were so good and very reasonably priced.

My favorite used to be the Tony Romo Spicy Beef, which…read moreis no longer on the menu, but they have the El Rancho Grande and it is described exactly the same way with the addition of cilantro, which I love, so I went for it. Now, I love spice and can handle quite a bit, but this was beyond next level. You can see the overload of jalapeño seeds in the photo. It was inedible. And sadly the rice and beans were so mixed in that they were a loss as well. Really disappointing. Also, no cilantro that I could taste or see.
