My experience with Hensel fencing was bad to say the least. After less than 4 years the fence fell over during a wind storm. I called them out and he (the owner) said the reason was that the fence was by my neighbor's yard and was being damaged by their watering. This is the most absurd thing I've ever heard. A fence can't get wet?? He made some other excuses and then said he would come back to check the posts. I never saw him again. Beware of this company. read more

They do good work but they are overpriced. We liked they fence they built at our old house so we had them quote us on fixing our gate at our new house and it was so pricy. We asked them to reinforce the post which our gate latches to against the house since the wood post was twisting- they wouldn't reinforce it since they said they don't drill into stucco. Instead they recommended that we replace the wood post with a metal post. They sent us the quote for over $900! We called them twice to ask why it was $900 and we never heard back from them. Another company quoted a metal post replacement for $250 but said that they could just reinforce the post to the stucco on our house for $20! read more

As was common in early 2023 our fence blew down in the storms. Upon a recommendation from a friend I called Hensel and Castillo Fencing. We had a very positive experience with Hensel fencing. Irving and his team were great. These hard workers arrived at approximately 7:30 am on the scheduled date and they worked tirelessly all day in near 100 degree heat to almost 6:00 pm until the fence was completed. Communication was great during the entire process, from the initial estimate to the end of the project. They cleaned up after themselves and made sure they addressed any problems or concerns before they left. Fortunately there were none. Irving checked in while the work was being done and showed up the next day for a walk through inspection. A special call out to Lupe who works in the office who arranged the scheduling, the contract and dealing with the property manager for the next door property. Slowest work I have ever seen, it was almost fascinating to watch people in real life. Real time but feel as though you're in the twilight zone in slow motion. Diagonal uneven 6X4s so the 2X4s don't lay flat on top so to make them flat on the messed up 6X4s they just didn't screw in the 2X4 all the way. The 6X4s are not spaced out the line up with 2X4 length so they're random cuts leaving some 2X4s at the very edge and having to be screwed in at an angle barely hanging on. They put the fence so high off the ground my little dog can literally just run under it in some spots. I was looking for her after her potty break I could hear her collar but couldn't see her, only have her just run under the fence back to my yard. read more

Just finished my final walk thru for a new fence installation. First of all, communication with us thru the process was great. Took a few weeks to get on the schedule, but no longer than any of the other companies we got bids from had mentioned. Hensel and Castillo did a fantastic job! Quality materials, VERY sturdy construction, and excellent clean-up afterwards. Dang, fencing is expensive these days, but their price was fair and competitive, in fact, one of the best of the 4 bids we got. As of now, my number one choice should I need work in the future. I believe that reviews should be made after some time has elapsed but I usually forget to do that so, while my experience is still fresh in my mind I am going to write my review now. I chose Hensel and Castillo after soliciting bids from three local fence contractors. Part of my decision for choosing Hensel and Castillo was based upon reviews on Yelp. There were other factors which I will address later in this review. All the positive reviews on Yelp stemmed from the work that was actually done and the negative reviews where about communication from the office and getting estimates in a timely matter. I did not experience any problems about getting through to the office or getting my bid/estimate in a timely manner. Quite the contrary, I was very happy with the communications with the office and getting my bid/estimate. When Irving Castillo came out to my home to measure how much fencing would be involved and what kind of fence we wanted, he was very attentive and professional in working up his estimate. He asked a lot of questions about what we wanted and as he surveyed the property he also made several suggestions that we liked and incorporated into the project. And he followed through with the actual installers so that knew without us having to tell them just exactly what we wanted. As part of my decision making process I checked with the State to see if the three companies had a good and active contractors license and were bonded and insured. All three companies passed that test. I also checked with the Better Business Bureau. Although one of the other companies had a higher rating than Hensel and Castillo, the rating for Hensel and Castillo from the BBB was "A". So to finalize my choice I followed up with a few questions to each of the contractors. All three used the same grade of redwood for the pickets. The difference between Hensel and Castillo and the other contractors was the Hensel and Castillo used 4x6 pressurized posts and the others used 4x4 posts. Hensel and Castillo also used specially treated wood screws and the other contractors used galvanized nails. After researching the holding power of screws vs nails I found out that going with screws was infinitely superior. Finally it did not hurt that, despite the advantages cited above, that Hensel and Castillo came in with the low bid for the project. So I chose Hensel and Castillo to do the work and they scheduled the project. They also arranged for PG&E, TID, City of Ceres, and Charter to come out and mark the utility lines to ensure that the project would be done safely. The project was to take two days to complete. Day 1 the work crew showed up as scheduled and told us what would happen that day which was removing the old fence and setting the fence posts. They worked very hard and completed to work scheduled for that day. Day two they constructed the new fence and completed the project. They picked up after themselves and left my property in good shape. We walked the property together and they satisfactorily addressed a few minor issues that I pointed out to them. When the work crew was getting ready to leave, Irving drove up and talked with us to make sure that we were happy with the work. In summary, we are very happy we chose Hensel and Castillo. They were easy to work with, they delivered on what they said they would do, and we have a beautiful new fence. I would very much recommend this company if you need any fencing project for your property. read more

I called to have part of my fence replaced after it was blown down by a storm. They sent someone out to give an estimate and we talked about everything that I wanted done. I wanted the split board on the wall replaced as well as the posts and the framing boards on the back. The framing boards were supposed to be a Douglas Fir. I was also given a price based on Hensel having to disassemble the fence in order to reuse whatever old boards were available. I also said that I did not want to use the original overlay design, but instead have the boards placed side by side. We agreed on a date to have the install done and I was told that they crew would arrive between 8:30 to 9am. The crew arrived at 6:30 AM and rang the doorbell! I was furious! I'm sure that it's not even legal to start outdoor work that early in Modesto! Also, as this is a shared fence with a neighbor, I would NEVER have agreed to let them start work that early because of the noise and the fact that the neighbors house is only about 20 feet away from the fence. I told them that they would have to wait until the scheduled time as I wasn't even fully awake yet. I had been working until after midnight the night before and had a meeting scheduled for 9am that I needed to prepare for. The crew decided to go to another job instead, and then showed up again after noon. They had no clue as to what the fence was supposed to look like or what materials they were supposed to use, so I had to explain it to them. Even afterward, they still started to build the fence incorrectly (overlay) and I had to go out and tell them "No, it's supposed to be side by side". They used new posts and a new lower board, but reused all the old boards and the frame, and didn't replace the broken board that was laying on the wall, which I didn't notice until after they left because all those items are on the neighbors side and can't be seen after the fence is built, without using a ladder. When the boss came out to collect the money, it was the same person who gave me the estimate. I told him about all the mistakes on the job, but he said that he didn't remember anything that we talked about and that anyway it wasn't in the written estimate they gave me. I checked, and sure enough, he hadn't written down anything that we discussed, there were just a few scrawled notes about the height of the fence and how many feet, but nothing else except the price! It did have the Douglas Fir checked for the rails, but the wood used looked exactly like the old softwood boards that were there originally, and which he told me WERE NOT Douglas Fir. They wood before and after is red and I have never seen red Douglas Fir wood before. He told me that the red color and holes were a result of the pressure treatment. I'm no expert in the process, but I don't think that Douglas Fir turns red from pressure treatment. I also asked about a discount since my neighbor had taken the old 30 foot fence apart and the quote included the price for his guys to do it. He told me that the $997 that he was charging me for 30 feet of fence at 7 feet high didn't include labor for taking the fence apart, but that he could give me and additional $20 off if that would make me feel better. He also said that we never discussed the cracked board at the bottom, but that he would send his guys out in a few days to put a stabilizing board on top of it since replacing it would require the fence to be taken apart again. I asked him if I could get a detailed receipt because my neighbor was paying for part of the fence and requested it. The receipt that they gave me only says "30 Foot 7 Foot Redwood Back Fence Rebuild $997 and the date. That's all! He told me that to get a detailed receipt, you have to ask ahead of time. SERIOUSLY? Also, unless you pay cash, there is an additional charge to use a credit card! Needless to say, they never called back or sent anyone to fix the broken board on the other side and I never got my detailed receipt. I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND using this company. And before you have ANY work done by anyone; ALWAYS GET IT IN WRITING FIRST!!! If you try to be nice, you'll pay a MUCH HIGHER PRICE. read more

I got 3 estimates for rebuilding my fence and 3 neighbor's fences. I was very pleased with their professionalism. They were easy to communicate with, pleasant, prompt, organized, and did good work. I was amazed at how much fence they were able to complete in just 3 days. They even billed the 3 of us separately, so I didn't have to collect money and be on the hook for other fences. I would hire them again in a heartbeat. I had asked for a latch to be put on the inside to lock my gate. They said they had to send someone out to weld it for me. Called 2 fence companies to get quotes back in April. Irving Castillo came out for Hensel Fencing and was very professional and explained very clearly the work that would be done. After talking to the second company, we went with Hensel Fencing. Irving got the quote to me in a very timely manner and was very thorough in breaking down the shared portions of the yard, so we could talk to our neighbors about shared cost (for good-neighbor style). We ended up going with a standard fence with all pickets facing us. The two men that came to tear down and build the fence were friendly and professional. Any questions we had, they happily answered. 2.5 days of hard work (in the heat of June), and they had the new fence complete. Irving and his crew built a fence that was NOT level in my backyard. Ruined my new backyard and new pool. I guess I have to live with it, because I realized it after I paid him. His crew also hit my new car and neighbor's cars with stain when I paid them almost $1,000 to stain my new fence. I would like him to come back and fix the fence, but things ended so poorly during the stain debacle that I decided it was not worth it. In the current state of my backyard, I cannot recommend Irving. I wish I would have went with Richter fencing instead. read more

Big thank you to Irving and Lupe! We needed our fence replaced but it was a daunting task as we shared it with 3 other neighbors. From the beginning Hensel was so helpful. Irving came out and took all of our measurements and he split our quote up for each neighbors so we knew how much each section would cost. They did amazing work when they were here and we are so happy with our fence. Service and quality gets 4 Stars! The only reason we took away one star was because my husband had to do a lot of coordinating with the neighbors himself. They built me a solid fence for the price paid. It's been two weeks, but so far everything remains as good as new. There was one flaw with the gate they built me, but as of today, it has been taken care of. They lost one star due to the gate issue (lock mechanism issue), which I feel should have been done right the first time. Overall, I am satisfied. My old fence was about 20 years old and in complete disrepair. I called Irving (the owner) and he responded right away to schedule an estimate. On our first meeting, he was prompt and very courteous. We talked about several options as far as repairing the fence and completely replacing it. We even discussed payment/billing options with my neighbors. In the end, I wanted to replace the entire fence with a new one. Irving came up with an estimate for both repair and replacement for each side. The multi-option estimates were helpful because I was able to provide copies to my neighbors to share the costs. Two out of three neighbors did share the cost with me. Irving also provided me with several design and material options, which I did not think about beforehand. It you do install a new fence with Hensel, go with their steel framed gate. It was a few hundred dollars more, but the quality and durability is well worth the added cost. The gate system is the weakest link in a fence and can be a source of structural problems for the surrounding fence joints. The new gate was so well built that I was motivated to put a pad lock on it to add additional backyard security. Before that, anyone could walk into my backyard and take whatever they wanted. Overall, I think the pricing was fair, but I should also note that I had this done during the off-season. Even Irving said by building in the winter/off-season, both materials and labor would be cheaper. On the first day of installation, Hensel Fencing sent 2 work crews to remove my old fence and set the structural supports for the new one. On the second day, they had a small 3-person crew working and they were able to finish the entire job on the second day. Irving estimated the job would take about 4 days. Hensel Fencing's workers were very pleasant, informative guys. Very skilled at what they do and were always happy to answer my questions. They were also good about getting my approval on certain design elements such as gate width. I might add that Hensel Fencing uses pressure-treated posts and cross-members. Additionally, they use several pounds of concrete for the posts and every board on the fence is secured with specially coated wood screws, not nails! In the end, I couldn't be happier with this fence. It is definitely the nicest and most secure wood fence in my neighborhood. A few weeks after the install, I had Hensel Fencing come out and spray the fence with an oil-based stain coat. That too was well worth the cost. read more

I had a 30 year old fence which was damaged by the spring wind gusts. Irving Castillo came and looked at the damage, gave me an estimate and now my fence is repaired and looks almost like new.
