When I was a teenager, I was exposed to Oriental rugs after visiting a Turkish friend of my family. I fascinated with her oriental rugs, and never thought I would own one. My aunt gave me a Bukhara rug for my house. I was ignorant about its quality and value. Through the years, I paid over $600 to have it cleaned. An oriental rug dealer referred me to Herat Oriental to have it appraised for insurance purposes. That was when I met Zia, the owner of Herat Oriental. I found him to be quite professional and most knowledgeable about oriental rugs. He did a quick evaluation of the rug, and told me that it was, although an authentic oriental rug, it was not a good quality rug and had very little value. In the orient, it was considered to be a throw away rug. Also, it had very little resale value. Consequently, I had been paying more to have it cleaned than what it was worth. After this, I bought more than 15 rugs from Herat oriental, and, in the beginning, I independently compared the rugs to those sold on the Internet, particularly eBay. The prices on the Internet generally were higher, or had low quality. If their cost were low, there was a risk purchasing them because they were bought unseen. Many were made in India or Pakistan, and had low quality. Also, the seller did not disclose that they were made in India or Pakistan. Another good issue is that Herat Oriental provides appraisals for the rugs sold. The appraisals are remarkable. They demonstrate a thorough knowledge of oriental rugs, such as locations of weaving, antiquity, quality of material, and type of weaving, My family, friends and I feel like we own as piece of history when reading the appraisals. Bottom line, I have bought oriental rugs from Herat Oriental for the past 10 years or more and will continue to buy them from Herat Oriental. read more

Beware of this Herat Oriental Rugs in Virginia. I bought two rugs from Alexandria store 106 S Early st. Alexandria VA 22304. They all defective and shed like crazy after 100 times vacuuming. It ruined my Dyson vacuum already! I called the owner Zia, he was very nice at the beginning. After he learned the problem, he screamed he wI'll not do the refund and hang up the phone. if you have other options, do not waste your time to buy from Herat Oriental Rugs. read more

I have an old rug that I've loved for a long time. It's a machine rug but it was dirty and in need of professional cleaning. Herat made sure that I understood that my rug was not an heirloom, as the cleaning probably cost as much as the rug was worth. I understood and appreciated his info but he understood that the rug was very valuable to me. When I picked it up, it was so clean again. So we left the poor review because we bought a rug through Facebook that was completely saturated with drywall dust. We bought it at a discounted price through Facebook Marketplace but drove almost 2 hours to get it. They offered us a full refund or a replacement rug from the same place that our rug came from that was completely saturated in dry wall dust. There is no way that it was a one rug issue. They tried to claim that if one of their more knowledgeable sales people were there they wouldn't have given it to us. But wherever our rug came from, all the other rugs are going to have the same issue. And I'm sorry but they had to have known it. There is no way that amount of drywall dust could have been in the rug without Is it impacting everything else in the area. So buyer beware. We chose to take it to professional cleaner. It was less of a hassle than taking it back to them. But again, I do that recommend this business. Buyer beware. read more

BEWARE Color-blind workers! I recently ordered two very expensive custom rugs from Herat Oriental and was very careful to pick the sample wool threads that would coordinate with their targeted setting. The large rug was supposed to be a blend of green aqua colors and the smaller rug was supposed to have a milk chocolate center. The larger rug was a blue aqua and the center of the smaller rug was (primarily) gray. I would not have purchased these rugs if I had known how poorly they matched the color samples. These folks are super-helpful and have a ton of beautiful rug selections at wholesale prices. When you drive up, you'll see it's in a sort of industrial warehouse strip, but definitely go inside! These are nice rugs, so you will still pay a pretty penny but much less than if you bought from a retailer. read more

Two brothers selling "Persian" rugs for wholesale price. Big place with large selection. Bought a rug from them and never revieced a certificate of authiniticy. I took the rug to two other places and found out it was not even Persian. When I confronted them with this, they started to play good cop bad cop game. I came in to look at a tribal rug for a dining room that has odd dimensions. I hadn't had much luck finding a rug elsewhere that I liked and wasn't either really expensive or really cheaply made. I was shown several from a huge stock that were good quality and walked away with a great rug for a good price. They even cut a rug pad to fit. Highly recommended. read more

I shopped for authentic Persian rugs at Herat Oriental in 2011 and again in January 2016. This company is a wholesaler and direct importer of handmade oriental rugs. The owner, Zia, told me that they sell 90% of their stock to retail rug dealers and 10% to the public. The place is incredible! Two large warehouse rooms with 6-foot high stacks of rugs of various sizes as well as huge numbers of bundled oversize rugs. They have at least 10 times as many rugs as the largest retail quality oriental rug stores in this area. Persian masterpiece rugs and valuable antique rugs are mixed randomly with much less valuable Afghan, Indian, and Pakistani rugs. While they welcome and help serious end-users such as me to shop at their warehouse, it is most desirable to know a lot about oriental rugs (weaving groups, wool quality, dyes, colors, prices, etc.) beforehand by visiting retail shops and reading books in order to direct your search more efficiently. Here flipping rugs to see a rug near the bottom of a 6-foot high pile is much more work for the staff compared to a 2-foot high pile in a retail store, so it helps to know enough to select the rugs of your interest just by looking at a few inches at the edges, or by looking at the backs of folded-up rugs. Also many of the rugs apparently lack tags. Zia told me that their stock of rugs woven in Iran has dropped because of the embargo, but I was impressed with the number of Iranian rugs that they still have. If you shop here, I recommend to work with Zia (or Feroz if he is there), because any others may lack sufficient knowledge. In my limited experience there, Zia does not exaggerate or stretch the truth about his rugs or inflate their prices, unlike what one finds in many retail rug stores. On my 2016 visits the prices Zia quoted me for his rugs from Iran seemed higher than what Feroz quoted me in 2011, probably reflecting their dwindling supply and everyone's expectation of higher prices of new imports when the embargo is lifted (which happened today). Zia's policy is to offer a full-refund if a customer returns a rug within 30-days and store credit after that. A store's refund policy affects its prices, and in this respect, my impression is that the prices Zia quoted me, while probably higher than wholesale and definitely higher than auction prices, are lower than those of a reputable retail store with a full-refund policy. I bought at Herat Oriental a fine Persian Kerman runner for an appropriate price but returned it a week later after my wife disapproved. Zia processed my refund promptly without any problem. So I highly recommend Herat Oriental for selection, honesty, price, knowledge about rugs, and return policy, but it is best to walk in with knowledge about oriental rugs, a good idea of what you want, and patience to look for buried treasure. read more
