After showing this appraiser evidence of changes in square footage etc. he lead me to believe he took this documented information down. The appraisal was sent to the lender within 48hrs and sure enough, mistake after mistake was found. Per the lender, this appraisal company refused to correct their mistakes (one being a $40K swing per mismeasurement). Appraiser refuses to contact me. I'm starting with this review first but to give others insight before hiring them. Next actions will follow for negligence.

Here's what happened, in a nut shell: my son found a jar filled with old costume jewelry when we were renovating our cottage. He had been begging me to take him to a store that buys gold to see if he could get some money for it, but I knew it was all crappy costume jewelry. Finally, I agreed and added a couple of very small pieces of my old gold jewelry so he would get some money for something. My son found The Diamond Vault via Google. I'd never heard of it. Well, we went in and they treat us like royalty. (ugh, I wished I'd dressed nicer!) The friendly woman (Laura?) took her time going through each piece, explaining the machine, etc...and concluded with less than 1 g of gold. She took her note and the little pieces... and Mr. Timothy Mayer came back in with a little stack of bills. He praised my son for his instincts and gave him cash including valuable $2 bills to keep as an investment. He also gave him a wonderful lecture on investing (as well as giving to others, eg. donating his costume jewelry to a charitable thrift shop) and showed him around, including silver & gold coins and rare $500 and $1000 bills... It was riveting and my son soaked it all in. (I think he's going to start collecting coins and investing in metals!) The staff at The Diamond Vault of Troy has at least 2 more lifelong customers and advocates! They are nothing short of remarkable.

Met one of the newer employees today; his name was Ed. Ed analyzed a semi-precious stone without…read moreeven making an offer. What Ed didn't know was that this jeweler was the SECOND opinion that I had gotten today. The first was at another establishment (much better offer). Ed indicated that my loose gemstone was typically thrown away after removing from jewelry...the other establishment nearby had offered me up to $90.00...$60.00 after bothering to look up the stone in a reference book (at the establishment other than Abbott's). Also had a negative experience with Fred (another jewelry guy who is employed there, and has been for quite some time). Fred had asked me, in front of a big crowd of customers..."Where is (such and such a street) in (city of residence)? It was a very frustrating question, and was quite private in nature. (He asked about my license information, in the presence of other customers). Needless to say, I called his boss (Mr. Abbott) and asked Mr. Abbott if he could discipline Fred, and somehow warn Fred that I would not put up with this ignorant and risky questioning. (Fred's still employed there, and has a rather negative and condescending attitude). Overall, this company is very loyal and great for offering collateral loans on jewelry, and especially precious metals. Upwards of 70%, this establishment is higher than most...where some others offer only 40-50% of face value. Kudos to John Abbott in this respect.

Buyer beware! First I will state yes, I should have been more educated and I chose to make this…read morepurchase based on the information I was given. The estate sale had several old books I was interested in. Two had no price tag on them and when I asked what the price was Randall looked on Ebay and said he couldn't sell them to me without his "book specialist" appraising them. On Ebay they appeared to be worth $400-$800. The next day I was sent an offer and I made an offer back. They took a week to respond and in the meantime I did the best I could to research old books. The next week I met him again and he came up with the best price he could based on the "expert". Well I went and had the books appraised by real rare book appraisers. I paid $15 each for 2 seperate books that were worth $2 and $5 (thats fine). The "super rare books" I paid $175 for based on their "expert" those books were valued at $20 and $10. Yes their job is to get the most they can for their clients, but it should not be at the expense of the people coming to the sales! Anyone going to their estate sales should be careful. Also to be fair I did make an offer for a chair, I later changed my mind on when I noticed it was broke which upset them. While I was in the other room my uncle asked them to come down a little on the price and told him he might be able to fix it for me and they did. I did not ask my uncle to ask them for a lower price. He wanted to come because there was some art he saw online he wanted to look at. I say that because when I complained to Randall about the books (probably to harshly) he accused me of bringing my uncle to play tricks on him to lower the price of the chair.
