The Heritage Center of Clark County is a local gem. The museum is well curated with many unique things to see. There's far more to see than what you might expect. When you go, sign in to the guest register and then head over to the greeter's desk. A greeter will take a couple of minutes to give you a little background about the building and how to best navigate the two floors of exhibits. The first floor was the more interesting of the two. There's plenty to look at, and it's presented very well. Be sure to walk all the way back to see the model recreation of the city streets of downtown Springfield during the 50s and 60s. The second floor isn't as full or as interesting but is worth the stairs or elevator ride up. Pro tip: Be sure to look up to the ceiling. There's almost as much to see up there and on the floor. No joke. Admission is a donation of your choice, but there's a suggested amount listed that is more than fair. If you are into history, go. It's one of Ohio's better history museums. This is a really wonderful place to go regardless but during December when "Holiday in the city" is happening downtown, the Heritage Center transforms The upstairs area into "SantaLand". We have gone every year for about 8 years I believe and although the decor doesn't change too much my grandkids are amazed each time. I grew up near this area and am happy to see as much of it preserved as possible. It's essentially free and no charge to take pictures with Santa. We leave a donation but it's optional and a lot of younger parents can appreciate they aren't charged outrageous amounts to see Santa. Also, this Santa is very authentic and believable for the kids. Really nice and very appreciated by my family each year. read more

What. A. Gem! I stumbled upon this museum during a recent volleyball tournament in Urbana. We stayed at the Marriott across the street and we decided to go for a walk. We walked around the building and found an unlocked door, so we went in. Once inside, the front desk gentleman said they were technically closed to the public, but since they were hosting a fashion show, he would allow us to take a quick stroll through the museum. So off my dad and I went. We spent about 35 minutes walking through the unlocked portions of the museum and it was simply amazing. The one thing that astounded me was the condition most of the items were in - pristine. It's like the items were put in this museum right after they were built. I can't even begin to describe the eclectic collection here, but it is definitely a piece of historiic Americana. From Civil War memorabilia to vehicles to steam engines, there is much to see and much that was built right in Springfield, Ohio from the early 19th to the mid 20th centuries. I've never even heard of Springfield, Ohio, much less visited. I'm glad I got to see this museum and the nearby mansions. I'd love to go back again and see the rest of the museum when it is fully open. Must see if you like Ohio and US history and historical items. read more

I stayed across from the Heritage for a full 5 days before realizing there was a museum inside! What a hidden gem. The museum was large and impressive. Gorgeous exhibits with extensive Springfield history. After spending 5 days in this declining and dilapidating town, it was really refreshing to see some history from its glory days. The place was empty on my visit, no other patrons in sight. I certainly hope more more visitors will visit and gain some appreciation for the towns history as I did. read more

Hands down, One of the best museums in the County! Admission is Free, donations are recommended.

I mean, it's there, it has style, but it is more of a drain on Springfield financially than a draw. Most just assume it is the bus depot.

Being a native Springfielder, I had been interested in visiting this museum since it opened. Several of my relatives have volunteered there, and perform research for the exhibits. The quality rivals that of the Smithsonian. And the information is astounding. As Erik L. details in his review, the material is significant for understanding better the transformation of the Industrial Age in America. They have done a fabulous job on this museum. A must see, you have to walk thru time with these wonderful displays that makes such a difference when you are out riding through the streets of Springfield.
