This past Thursday, the 22nd of April and Earth Day 2021, I decided to celebrate the Earth by doing some exploring on foot in Mount Vernon. I parked my car at Mount Vernon Lions Club Roadside Park because I couldn't easily spot if/where the parking lot was for North Lions Park. After parking my car I explored south on the Skagit Riverwalk to the River Jam Memorial and the Skagit Riverwalk Park. After exploring south I made my way north and to the North Lions Park. Walking to the park I noticed a couple of sandy stretches along the Skagit River at the base of a treed area. I got all excited and hopeful that I would find access to the beach in the park. The paths I encountered in the park were dirt paths and relatively flat except at the junction with the beach patches. It took me a few tries to find the right paths that led to the beach, but I eventually found two different beach spots. I sat and relaxed at each spot for a little bit. The sun was out and the trees provided speckled shade. Flowers were starting to bloom and the Song Sparrows had fun watching me from the side of the trail and singing. The water was relatively quiet, no boaters nor big birds in the water here. Tiny minnows did swim in the shallows close to shore. I only encountered one other person while I was here (a little under an hour). The noise from the highway does carry so it is not absolutely quiet. The trails were well maintained and cleanly. Nice place to take in some nature while in Mount Vernon.

Located along the Swinomish Channel in La Conner, Pioneer Park isn't the fancy-pantsiest park I've…read moreever been to, but it's a nice place to sit with a friend on a sunny day and watch the boats go by. Marked by the aptly-named Rainbow Bridge, the waterfront portion of the park includes a playground (closed during our visit, due to covid restrictions), a few picnic tables, and easy-to-stroll paved paths along the channel. Besides photographing the impressive bridge from below, the park's best feature are the many boats, trawlers and sailboats navigating past. I'm not sure I'd make this a destination park, but it was a great place to stop while already enjoying an afternoon in La Conner.

This was my first camping trip to Bay View in years, and my very first in the winter months. We're…read moreworking hard on our goal to camp at least once a month in 2023, so this not-too-far spot seemed like a great spot to check out on a blustery January weekend. We were lucky to snag a partial hookup (power/water) site in the first loop (sites 1-9), which features views of the bay. The campground host was kind enough to help guide us as we backed in our new trailer, which is a LOT bigger than our old one! Soon enough we were snug in our site and all hooked up. The loop eventually filled up for the weekend and was very quiet. While our site didn't have a sewer hookup, there's a dump station at the park which is free for overnight campers. There's not a lot to do at this park, it's pretty small. But the beach is gorgeous, with nighttime views across the bay to the eerily gorgeous refineries to the west. We didn't do much exploring, except for a day trip to nearby Edison for some beers and lunch.

I adventured to the Skagit Wildlife Area this morning, Thursday the 16th of July 2020, with my mom…read morefor some mother and daughter adventure time. The area is run/managed by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and there are a number of different units to explore. We took a right at the fork in the road past the main entrance and parked in the parking lot by the restrooms, information boards, covered area, and office. Venturing off on foot after parking the car, we took the trail in the no hunting zone. A short ways past the trailhead the trail forks into two trails, both trails are out-and-back trails. Today we decided to walk both trails. We were fortunate to have overcast weather that partially guarded us from the sun's rays. On a sunny summer day I could see roasting while walking on this pathway. So make sure to cover up, what we did, and/or wear sunscreen. The bullfrogs were croaking, birds chirping and singing, and woodpeckers pecking all throughout the few hours we spent here. The trails we walked took us past streams, mudflats, estuaries, bird nests, and Olympic Mountain view points. The herons and eagles enjoyed soaring overhead and when we passed an eagle's nest the young ones were just coming out and looking around. A place to take one's time and move a little slow or walk and stop frequently just to see what wildlife crosses one's path. We encountered a couple of covered shelters with seating for those who want to sit and observe the surroundings. Wild flowers also abound in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Berries drew the appetite of birds and were eagerly consumed. No negatives about the Skagit Wildlife Area for me. A great place to come if you are craving nature and especially an abundance of wildlife and/or wild flowers to walk amongst or observe. Not very busy during our time here, we arrived and departed before noon. Also great morning light for taking photos.

It's located next to a bunch of sports fields so it was busy when we stopped by. There's a fun tire swing, a pole to slide down, an interactive music toy, slides, monkey bars and so much more. Cute things to climb in and on. I love the military theme. It's close to a base so it makes sense.

It was really a waste of my time it's a lovely location. If only we got to view it there was no for warning on any social media or websites that the trails were closed so that was unfortunate. Probably will not return back there since they don't communicate with the public well wind trails are closed.
