We had a beautiful time driving 70 minutes to get here, but sadly, the trail going down towards the water was closed and we had no advanced notice so the only thing really open was the coffee shop which we didn't bother going in. It was really a waste of my time it's a lovely location. If only we got to view it there was no for warning on any social media or websites that the trails were closed so that was unfortunate. Probably will not return back there since they don't communicate with the public well wind trails are closed. read more

Cama Beach State Park was my favorite state park out of the two on Camano Island. It's more developed and I really enjoyed all of the trails here along the slope and the trails going down to the beach. There are a lot of cabins down at the actual beach for rental so you can spend nights down at the beach. The thing I was most taken with this state park were the beach front views. Very beautiful and I'm sure quite a beautiful sight at sunset! read more

My brother / best friend, Ryan, and I enjoy being in nature, so I've reviewed several parks that we have visited. We drove out to Camano Island recently with the intention to hang out at this park until sunset and then visit the recently-opened Blue Heron restaurant. I called the Blue Heron to ask if they had any reservations available for the night that we were going to be on the island. (This was last week.) They said that no reservations were available for that evening, but they said that they do leave a portion of their dining room open for walk-ins. Well, the restaurant was jam-packed for quite a long time (I was willing to hang in there, Ryan wanted to bag it, so I caved to what he wanted to do), so we'll have to try the Blue Heron restaurant another time. However, this park was a really lovely place to hang out, and I felt that it was worth the slightly long drive all by itself. Camano Island is one of my personal favorite locations in Washington State. However, I had never visited this park until last week. I really liked this park. The rows and rows of cabins reminded me of what I'd imagine a small town coastal fishing village to look like. It was uplifting to walk around near the cabins and to read the plaques near the water about the marine life in the area. Most of the cabins were rented out, and the people milling about were friendly and cheerful. Many of them said hi to us. This doesn't happen at a lot of the State Parks in Washington State, and we thought it was really nice. What kind of person would rent a cabin in a State Park in November in Washington State, when the temperatures lately have been in the 20s and 30s? Well, maybe me, because I briefly considered renting one for a while. I liked being on that peaceful beach a lot. The vibe felt uplifting and soothing. However, we have other priorities for our budget at this time. (And our heat at home works exceptionally well, and we have a lot of soft warm blankets around our house that we cuddle up in frequently with our cat around this time of year. I don't think I'm willing to pay to give that up for a while.) However, I found my yelp friend Tom B's review of these cabin rentals to be quite helpful in case I re-visit the idea of renting one of these cabins at a later date. There is a short, pretty hike down to the beach from the parking lot. This hike is extremely easy, even for me (Ryan's "easy" is way harder than my "easy" when it comes to hikes. Ryan does some really difficult hikes fairly frequently. I do more moderate hikes usually). There are fairly nice bathrooms located in the parking lot, and the shared bathroom for those who rent the basic cabins (which do not have their own bathrooms) at the beach is quite decent as well. There is a small store and a cafe down there, which is convenient, although Ryan and I didn't visit either since we had been planning to go to the Blue Heron after our time at this park. The strip of beach that you can sit on, that is right next to the water, is very thin (it is maybe 12 - 20 feet from the back of the beach to the water's edge at the time that we visited the beach), but the beach was quite sufficient for our needs. It wasn't crowded when we visited. There were maybe 10 other people there at the time of our visit. A very peaceful place to hang out and talk and watch the sunset. I would return any time. Just love Camano. So close but feels like it's a world away. read more

If you are looking for a quiet place to retreat to, Cama Beach Resort State Park is a hidden gem waiting for you on Camano Island. We stayed in bungalow A, a two bedroom cabin. The retro 1930's vibe was novel and reminded us to keep it simple and enjoy the surrounding beauty. The bungalow's kitchen is made up of a sink, counter, microwave, and refrigerator. That's it, so bring what you need to cook and eat. The shower is temperamental and only needs a quarter turn of the hot knob to be hot enough to shower. read more

What a seriously magical little place to stay in the northwest! We went for our first time summer 2019 and fell in love. The cabins are quaint and comfortable, restored to their original colors. The whole area is very nostalgic because of those and it gave me special feels. There is a ton to do there on site, especially for being a small state park! Cabins, playgrounds, a center for wooden boats with boat rentals, crabbing, paddling, bonfires, beaches to walk, the list goes on! We had a cabin immediately on the waterfront and enjoyed most the day right there on the shore, and loved watching the tide swing in at sunset. The cabins have heat, running water, a refrigerator and a microwave which made the stay very comfortable with our baby and toddler. The only thing uncomfortable is the beds (holy rock hard mattress!) but really it's camping so don't hold it against them... maybe just bring extra padding. You do need to bring your own blankets and pillows as well. There is even a little bistro there on site if you get hungry, but we enjoyed cooking on the shared bbq right outside our cabin. In all, it was such a fantastic little northwest stay and we loved it so much!! My goal is to come back in fall for a cozier stay when temps drop. read more

A beautiful place to visit. We visited on a crisp sunny day, so enjoyed gorgeous views of the water. The boathouse was open, and we talked awhile with Michael, the boathouse guy, and learned about the history, and all about the cabin & boat rentals. We saw the resident bald eagles perched high on the tree tops, eyeing everything below. Michael said people take a dip the water in the summer, but man did it look cold in early March. We'll have to come back and see for ourselves. read more

Cama Beach State Park is a great place to spent a couple days and nights at. This park prides itself in being a place where you can walk around without having to worry about vehicles. When staying here you can easily go outside and walk around the beach. The view is stunning. There is also a basketball area as well as a volleyball court. It is a very family friendly park. The only thing which you should be aware of is that there are buses that help transport luggage to your cabin. They close at 5pm so if you have coolers you want to take with you to your cabins then you'll want to arrive before 5pm. The parking lot isn't that far so if you do forget something small it is only a short stroll to your vehicle. Since we came at the wrong time: it was cold and raining, we were not able to rent a boat. But during good weather you can rent a boat, go fishing, crabbing, and even swimming. read more

Really beautiful state park, with a nice cafe and super clean bathrooms. We stayed in one of the waterfront cabins which was cute, clean, and had a heater. I thought it was a little pricey for the winter considering you can't use the fire pits for most of the season due to the rain so cooking options are limited to what you can microwave, and the shuttle is currently shut down so it was pretty difficult to haul bags/coolers down to and back up from the cabin. If you aren't able to handle steep trails, I definitely wouldn't suggest staying at one of these cabins until the shuttle is running again. If you do stay in the cabins, there are carts you can use to bring your stuff down a pretty steep unpaved trail to the cabins and back up to the loading area when you leave. There is currently only a microwave and fridge in the cabins, and you will need to bring your own bedding (normally quilts are supplied, but due to covid they aren't available right now). You have to clean the cabin yourself before leaving (sweep and mop the floors, clean counters, table, and sink, etc), and the gift shop/store down there are currently closed too. I wouldn't recommend staying here if there's a chance of rain on the day you're arriving or leaving, because bringing items in the metal carts up/down the trail would be super slippery and not easily managed. You're not allowed to drive down to the cabins unless it is for handicap parking. read more

My wife and I are Washington State Park Hosts and our FIRST Camp hosting State Park was at CAMA BEACH on West side of Camano Island. For the month of September 2018 we immensely enjoyed the Rangers and Staff who maintain Cama Beach State Park.These people are Top Notch care-takers of their Resort and look to richly enhance everyone's stay. The cabins on the beach are cleaned thoroughly after every checkout and the grounds, bathhouses and vehicles are well maintained. We were blessed to have a month-long privilege to shuttle Cama Beach visitors from the Welcome Center and their 5 large parking lots, up and down the long windy hill down to the water where 33 cabins await them. The people we met were really nice and enjoyable and we had many opportunities to make their stay a memorable one. Next time you want to stay at a resort for a few days, don't hesitate to call Cama Beach State Park and make your reservations. i've tried to make reservations here for more than a year but every time it's worked with my schedule or i think about inquiring, the cabins have all been booked....until this year! somehow i lucked out and snagged one of the pet friendly waterfront cabins for a couple of nights in april thinking it would be a nice getaway during the school district spring break. the email confirmation and the physical on-site welcome center both do a good job of preparing you for what you will need to bring and how you will logistically get your stuff from car to cabin given the car restrictions at beach level (as a first timer, you may find this inconvenient but you'll probably warm to the idea when you see how easy the shuttle service makes it to transport people and things and how nice it is to not have to deal with walking amidst vehicles for the duration of your stay!) the cabins are admittedly sparse but i like that aspect. there's enough stuff to make it manageable but also not too much clutter. if you want clutter, pack and haul more of your own stuff from home to suit your needs. there's a very detailed cama beach notebook in each cabin with every possible piece of info you could want to read about or know: from what the center for wooden boats offers to the cama cafe menu and hours of operation to trail maps and mileage for both cama beach and camano island state parks! you name your query, they've got it covered! even if you want to leave the state park and go venture into stanwood or beyond, they've got a list of restaurants and local museums so there's no excuse for being bored. i appreciated the small heaters in each cabin as the weather was blustery one of the days i was there and being able to go walk the beach and come back to a warm room was a perk that you're certainly not afforded when camping unless you build a fire. because the weather forecast had included wind and rain, it was relatively empty the days i was there. some cabins were occupied and some had families with small children who would run around and ride bikes near the cabins but all in all, people were friendly and respectful and it never once felt overwhelming. i imagine the place would have a very different feel in the middle of the summer when the days are longer and warmer and some of the areas (volleyball net, cornhole/horseshoes or bbq grills) are occupied or at least in higher demand. for those contemplating renting a waterfront cabin sans bathroom, the shared bathrooms one row back from the beach were spotlessly clean every time i went to use them. plenty of soap, toilet paper, etc. it may feel like an inconvenience to have to leave the cabin to visit the restroom, but it honestly wasn't too far away from the cabin i had been assigned. this place may not be for everyone but it's got a lot to offer and for the price point, it makes a great escape with a pet, kids, friends, partner or just by yourself. some may perceive that having to haul your own bedding, dishes and food is an inconvenience but once you're there, you're there and the sound of the water and the simplicity of the environment make for a restful and relaxing stay. i'd just add that the welcome center staff and people working the shuttle were more than helpful and accommodating. if you don't succeed the first time you try for a cabin reservation, do not despair! i can't attest to the fact that your patience will be rewarded by the relaxation you enjoy once you've visited. read more

Stayed in the cabins. Overall, first time staying in cabins in Washington state park and it was really nice. Had a bunk with twin over full/Queen and a queen bed. Also a little dining table with 4 chairs, and 3/4 size fridge with freezer and a microwave. Outside each cabin had it's own fire pit with a couple benches and a large picnic table. The cabin itself was a bit dusty/dirty. But terrible. We tidied it up a little upon arrival. Bathrooms were clean. There are showers that looked pretty clean as well which we did not use. It was a short (but steep) hike down to the beach. It is a very rocky beach with lots of rocks with barnacles so bring something soft to sit on! The beach itself had tons of little crabs that the kids had a blast looking for. Also lots of driftwood to climb on. Not too busy--even in a nice June weekend which made you feel like you could get away a bit while still not being too bad a drive from seattle/bellevue read more

Five stars for the woods and trails. Five stars for the staff. Five stars for the beach. Five stars for the views. Five stars for the prices on cabin rentals. Three stars for the cabins themselves. First and foremost, if you read nothing else, know that the cabins marked "waterfront" share a common bathroom/bathhouse. The "deluxe" cabins have private bathrooms with little fiberglass shower stalls and real flush toilets. For $12 more, the deluxe are the way to go. Many of them front on the water, anyway, so it's not like "waterfront" doesn't apply to them. You park up the hill and a shuttle takes you and your stuff down to the cabins. Unless you're good at packing really light, this is kind of a production for a brief stay, but it's a great service. If you've packed for several nights (or have kids in tow), it doesn't seem like such a bunch of rigmarole. The scenery is spectacular here. Wide view of Whidbey's east shoulder, and the Olympics peek over the south side of that. There's a steady current carrying plenty of driftwood past your windows, and there's a stripe of sand between you and the waterline, on the other side of the concrete bulkhead. The cabins themselves are pretty rickety. They're virtually all made from the same slab of cedar planking--did the original owners get this all in one big truckload from some guy named Lucky who made them a bulk deal? They've been here long enough that the floors appear to have been stained ebony, but it's just decades of use showing their true colors. You get a little side table with 4 chairs, a single bed, a single-point-two-five bed in its own bedroom, a kitchen with a microwave, a fridge, and a sink, and the aforementioned bathroom. Being at the bottom of the hill certainly hasn't hampered the plumbing any--if anything, quite the opposite. The toilet flushing sounds like a 787 taking off with no muffler. The mattresses here are far better than sleeping on a park bench. They're somewhere between the park bench and your bed at home. But not too close to home. The bedroom is pretty tiny--I comfortably rested my feet flush against one wall, stretched across the bed, and rested my palms flat against the other wall, without straightening my elbows. You bring your own bedding. Bottom line, if you're renting cabins in a state park, you probably grasp all this. It's not a hotel, and you have to plan ahead for some of the stuff you might need in the way of creature comforts. What you get in exchange is access to a gorgeous little beach. This is not the crown jewel of the state park system, but it's a wonderful, affordable, friendly getaway that fills your lungs with fresh air and makes you sleepy after the sun goes down. The relaxation will do you a world of good. read more

This beach park totally embodies the Pacific Northwest. Parking is up above in secure and well kept parking areas surrounded by thick forest. It is a quick walk down to the beach, which is full of sea shells and skipping rocks. There are cabins you can rent out by the night. I regret not asking about pricing! There is a wooden boat shop that rents out canoes and kayaks on the beach. They make all the boats there using traditional methods and the workers are happy to talk about each and every boat, upwards of 30 handmade boats. You can walk along the beach all the way to Camano Beach Park, several miles down the beach. We did it and found lots of great photo hot spots. Such a fun time. read more

This was a very pretty place to visit but definitely not my favorite state park. It has a lot of amenities and services probably due to the fact that they have lodging (cabins looking out over the water). It was very busy when we visited. Tons of children running and biking between the cabins and down the paths. It seems like a very family friendly summer vacation place. One think that I was hoping for was more beach. It's pretty much non-existent at least in the area we were. It's just a pebbly small beach area that probably disappears when the ride comes in. After walking a ways past the cabins we came to a sign that warned us not to continue due to falling rocks and other dangers. So we stop and nearby there was a shady patch of grass amongst blackberry bushes. It was a nice spot to chill for some time. We attempted to stick our feet in the water but it was ice cold! People were still swimming in it, although I can't imagine how they didn't develop hypothermia after five minutes. I did notice that the water was amazingly clear! I would really have liked to swim but no way I could have ventured in past my ankles! If you arrive at the park after 5 the office closes and your only option is to get a day pass and you have to pay $10 in cash. There are park rangers everywhere so if you don't pay you will surely be caught. If you don't have cash the closest ATM is down the hill about 1-2 miles at a gas station. Take a right out of the main gates and go down the hill. There is also a shuttle that runs from the parking area straight down to the beach. It's less than a mile and there is a nice trail. If you take the shuttle you might miss the cute little bunnies hoping around the trails. I think I would like to go there in late September or early October, before the rain picks up and rent a cabin for the weekend. Hopefully it would be a little less crowded with only the sounds of the ocean rather than kids and dogs :). read more

People that work at the park are fantastic. There's bbq pits scattered about ans community fire pits and the wood is supplied. I was lucky enough to have been able to stay at the Camano Beach Cabins as a teenager (way back in 1976-77).... It was family owned back then. I have so many fun memories from the times we stayed there. Each evening, in the club house the owner played a selection of movies for us to watch. I don't remember there being a paved entrance to the cabins, but we got to park our car next to our cabin. The owner was such a nice lady. A button had fallen off of my sweater, so I asked her if she had some needle and thread so I could sew it back on. She did. She also took the time aside to teach me the proper way to secure that particular style (shank) button that had fallen from my sweater. It was a small gesture, but her act of kindness has stayed with me my entire life. read more

Im not sure how big of a secret this place is...but, i am definitely adding it to the rotation of annual visits! If you have a Discovery Pass you can get right in. If not its $10/day. We forgot ours & paid the fee, the lady at the entrance was a tad pushy with asking to be paid while I was looking for my pass & took a while to process a cash payment. We went into the park & its very well maintained. The grounds are beautiful. Its a little confusing how you park but its not a huge parking area so youll figure it out. We parked at an area thats in front of the cafe that were open. Then took a trail down to the beach area. Down the trail theres fresh blackberries to pluck & eat. Take a cup! The cabins are the cutest setup ever. Theres areas to rent boats, go crabbin with all the supplies, a life size chess play area, swings that are kinda set off to the back & not much area to sit & have an eye on your child. We had fun walking up & down the beach, plenty of places along the sea wall to sit. They have cornhole, horseshoes, volleyball area to have family time. Tons of places to use the free standing BBQ pits. Great place for a family getaway! read more

Love, love, LOVE this place. We got lucky with a mid-week, one night lodging in one of the deluxe cabins. Usually, the summer dates are completely reserved many many months in advance. We loved our time here so much we are already making reservations for next year! Our cabin was just steps from the beach and water. It was so relaxing to sip coffee on the bench in front of our cabin while we watched and listened to the water lapping the shore. The cabin is very rustic. As someone else mentioned, it is not a 5-Star hotel. In fact, it's very much glorified camping. But you do get electricity, a little kitchenette complete with a mid-size fridge, bathroom and shower, HOT water, and...internet connection in these rustic cabins. As a parent of a toddler, it was a life saver to have internet connection, since it was easy to get some youtube videos of Elmo and other sesame street favorites to entertain us while it rained. When the sun was out, we were out exploring the beach, picking up shells and meeting our family friendly neighbors. After the little one went to sleep, husband and I were able to cozy up just outside our cabin and watch the stars and moonlight dance on the water, glasses of wine in hand. Very romantic. The kitchen only has a microwave, coffeemaker and fridge, but there are outdoor grills and firepits around where you can grill up some steaks or roast some marshmallows. Next time we will be more prepared to enjoy . The staff is very nice here. There are shuttle vans that take you from the parking area to the path in front of the cabins. If you choose to walk from the parking area to the cabins, be forewarned the hill is fairly steep. It's probably easier going down rather than up. The check in/ check out process is very easy and matter fact. You do have to clean your cabin before you leave so make sure you make time for that. I'm sure it's more crowded on the weekends, but for a mid-week stay it was really peaceful and quiet. read more

Just got back from spending an amazing President's Day Weekend at Cama Beach!! I booked a waterfront cabin last month for my boyfriend and me, and the timing worked out perfectly because we both needed a little get-away to recover from midterms and to recharge for the homestretch before finals. Soo glad we had a waterfront cabin. It was so nice to see the water from the windows. We had breakfast at the little table up against the boom the separated us from the beach (it was usually high-tide at breakfast, so it was actually separating us from the water) and we also enjoyed our tea/coffee/cocoa/whathaveyou on the porch while taking in the amazing views of the water/beach/mountains/sunset. The "hikes" we did are more like strolls in the woods. Cranberry Lake is really just a glorified marsh but it was still fun to check it out. We followed another trail into Camano Island State Park but turned around because it ran alongside the road. We used the grills to cook our meals and built a fire one evening. Another couple joined us by the campfire and it was nice to chat. Everyone was so relaxed and friendly. The cabins were built in the 1930's, so they are a little drafty and the lights shine through the walls, but there is heating and we stayed cozy at night. The whole park makes an effort to be 'green,' so there's composting and recycling, energy-saving lightbulbs, and fuel-efficient vehicles. They ask that you clean the cabin before you go and provide a broom, dustpan, mop and bucket so it doesn't take too long. No cars down in the cabin area but they have a good system for checking in and loading up into a shuttle. Also, the showers require tokens for hot water ($.50 for 3 minutes) but there was plenty of hot water without the tokens and we ended up not using most of ours; maybe we snagged other visitors' leftover minutes? It was a very inexpensive adventure with breathtaking views. We had a really great time and I'm sure we'll be back to enjoy it again. read more

Christmas was great this year! The staff at Cama-Beach are so helpful and the shuttle service is just like having valet at a hotel! Great hikes, great waterfront view of the sound...can't go wrong here. Cooking in the microwave was adventurous, especially when I don't have one at home...but all the research I did and recipes I brought worked out perfectly! I had forgotten all about 5 min baked potatoes, the kids loved them! I will be coming back here for Christmas for sure! And only 45 mins from home, um YA! read more

I read a very negative review here and while I don't agree I do understand. It's important that your expectations match the reality of the cabin situation. Fortunately this is easy to do - currently you cannot reserve a cabin online. A phone call to the park is required - (360) 387-1550. The standard cabins are "rustic". They are conveniently close to the beach and will keep you dry and they have electricity, but they are definitely not for everyone. The idea of arriving with little ones after the shuttle closes for the night brings to mind a variety of scenarios. The road to the cabins is paved, but the road is steep. If you don't take the shuttle you will be walking it. I don't mind it but in situations such as- in the dark, without a headlamp or flashlight and in the rain with little ones and lots of camping supplies - the situation would not be fun even when using one of the many wheel barrows they make available to guests. The beach is beautiful and the views can be amazing. I've even seen a river otter swimming along about 10' from the shore. Personally, I think the cabins are priced fairly. I spent a half hour talking with a ranger the other day about pricing, location, preparations, etc. because my son and family will be visiting. I currently live here on Camano Island and remember when I first learned about the cabins - they were around $20 a night! They finally raised the rates to a fair price. While I have not stayed in the cabins I've spent many days hiking around Cama Beach, hiking to the beach from the surrounding beaches and have become quite interested in the Center for Wooden Boats. The Center for Wooden Boats is a unique museum that "checks out" their exhibits. You can rent a boat, talk with the staff or if you are really into it you can sign up for a week long class, live at Cama and build your own boat. The other Center for Wooden Boats is in Seattle. I think it's on Lake Union and offers free boat rides every Sunday afternoon. Camano Island has many vacation homes to rent for a day to a month. If you really enjoy camping and don't mind carrying your gear and walking next door to use the bathroom and shower then the waterfront cabins or second row cabins might be a really good fit for you. Think of this like camping even though you'll be in a cabin - bring flashlights, warm clothes, bug repellent and sense of adventure. Another option for enjoying Cama Beach is to rent a vacation "cabin", "house", "condo" somewhere else on the Island and visit Cama during the day. You'll need the Discovery Pass which you can use at the other State Parks for the year and then you are in. You can walk the steep hill down to the beach or take the shuttle. There are many easy to moderate shorter trails above the beach. The madrona trees are beautiful. Across the street from Cama Beach entrance you will find a trail system that will keep you busy for hours. It can be a little buggy depending on the time of year. All of the trails are well maintained by a generous group of volunteers on the Island. With a Discovery Pass you can also drive over to Camano Island State Park. It is next to Cama Beach and offers several madrona lined trails overlooking the water. read more

What a great state park. Decided to get away from the snow hikes and try going west. The park rangers were informative about the area and enthusiastic about the park. The trails looping around the park weren't difficult at all. It would accommodate children, pets and peoples with different ability levels well. The beachfront was really nice. Full of broken seashells, clam shells and pebbles. There is a wooden boat center there that was holding a boat making workshop and fascinating to just pop in for a look around and chat with the folks there. The cabins looked to be in great condition and a great winter option to get away from the city as they are open year round. We took a coffee break at the cafe right above the cabins and beachfront area. Probably the best cranberry and white chocolate scone I've ever had. The lattes were great as well. Really good foam for dipping my scone in. The hike over to Cranberry Lake takes you across the street, and is also quite pleasant. The walk over to Camano State Park is walkable as well. Spent a great portion of the day just relaxing on the beachfront and looking over the water at the mountains. Excited to make reservations for the cabins! read more

Cama Beach State Park in Island County, Washington is one of the Washington State Parks. The scenery is spectacular here. It's like an updated 1930s-era fishing resort and sits on the southwest shore of Camano Island facing Saratoga Passage. The last time I was there it was like stepping back in time to a Puget Sound fishing camp with waterfront cedar cabins and bungalows. They've been refurbished, with modern conveniences added, and are available for rent year round. I've never rented one but really want to. I have a client who used to love the 90-minute drive from her home in Seattle. She said it gave her such peace. I was not surprised when she asked me to help her find a house on Camano Island - which I did. I'm pretty excited about our newest listing nearby the park. I'm telling people I know who live in Bellevue or Seattle to come take a look and then live here! Camano Island also has a lot of vacation homes to rent for a day to a month. Newest state park in all of Washington? Sign me up. I just got back from a mini mid-week vacation to this lovely little treasure. We got in on a cancellation, since reservations are booking out well into the year. The price was incredible. It's no five-star hotel, but indoor plumbing, three beds (real beds), microwave, coffee maker and high-speed internet? Yeah, I'm set. Right on the water? YEAH! Gorgeous scenery? Check Amazing hikes within a walk or a reasonable drive? Yup A++++++ WILL STAY AGAIN! Boom. read more

This was a nice little getaway for our anniversary. The beach was lovely. The water especially was beautiful in the morning. I've heard you can see whales, but unfortunately I didn't see any. I enjoyed the native animals and plants guide in the room. Sadly the cafe and gift shop were closed when we were there, but we did enjoy the giant chess board outside. We cooked our dinner in one of the provided BBQ pits, which was nice. In the busy season, however, it might be hard to get your own pit, although there are many. I can only speak for the regular cabins, not the deluxe. Be aware that it isn't luxury. This is basically camping with some of the comforts of home, like a sink, microwave and fridge. The beds were creaky and uncomfortable. You have to park far away. There's a shuttle that makes it easy to take luggage down to the cabins, but we had a problem getting them back up to the car. You get a number to call the shuttle but our cell phones didn't work! We had to run around trying to track someone down and it was starting to rain. What they should have is another phone near the cabins to call the shuttle to go back up. The bathrooms are quite a ways away, in a separate building. That was annoying in the middle of the night. To take a shower, it will cost you extra and you have to have some change on hand. You must clean the cabin after using it, which means disinfecting the counters and mopping the floors. Luckily, they have the needed supplies in the cupboard, but we were unsure about how exactly to mop the floor. Another thing I was surprised about when I got there was that, despite the fact that you pay extra for "waterfront cabins," the non-waterfront cabins are directly behind the waterfront ones. The only difference is that you probably can't see the water as well from those cabin windows and porches. Everything here is pretty much waterfront, so I'm not sure that it's worth paying more. Overall, it's a nice place to stay! read more

This state park is handicap unfriendly. No close parking places near beach. I could not make it up the hill from the beach so my husband pulled about 20 feet into the cabin area to pick me up. We were there for less than a minute. This jerk of a ranger came by and threatened my husband with a $250 ticket because he dared to come and pick me up even though I had a valid handicap placard. This was after my husband explained that I could not make it up the hill to the jerk. This totally ruined, what had been up to that point, a really good day. One of few I have had lately. Additionally, they do not allow dogs in any of the cabins that have bathrooms. So, this place is not only handicapped unfriendly but also dog unfriendly too. read more

This park is shady and quite lovely. The main thing that gives it 4 stars and not 5 is that it is uber freaking crowded in the summer. Parking can be challenging. Be prepared to walk up hill and down-- I've heard there is a shuttle or bus that can take you down? Not sure on that part. There is a boat rental place and it's the only one on the island. Folks seem to really enjoy it. read more
