Mariner Park is a campground located right at the beginning of the famous 5-mile Homer Spit Road…read moreleading out towards Kachemak Bay in Homer, Alaska. For my first evening in Homer, AK, I was looking for a place to stay and discovered Mariner Park pretty easily through the app on my phone called, Campendium. It's $20 to camp for the night, which is pretty standard for any campground. Upon entering, the Registration Board said to find an unoccupied site, park your vehicle and then return back to the entrance area where there's an auto-payment kiosk which accepts cash or credit card. For this Mariner Park Campground, it was pretty crowded when I spontaneously arrived about 7pm over the summertime. At first, I was uncertain if I'd find an available campsite, but luckily, I did. What I noticed was, there were two distinct sections to the campground... - The right-hand side offered sites against the scenic waters and snowcapped mountains set in the distance. These were certainly the preferred campsites for obvious reasons. - The left-hand side of the campground offered sites beside Homer Spit Road. And this is where I found a spot that hadn't been taken yet. But what was deflating about these campsites situated against Homer Spit Road was how little spacing you had between yourself and the sites next to you. There was zero privacy that it was almost impossible to avoid meeting your camping neighbors, or even just trying to lounge outside without watching kids running around in every direction. To say things were a little cramped, would be quite the understatement, lol. Each campsite had firepits for barbecuing and picnic tables, but with all the wonderful seafood restaurants offered in Homer, it was much better to drive the Spit Road and purchase dinner in downtown. Although the campground road was not paved, the campsites were set on grass which made for comfortable sections setting up tents. I was surprised by how my night went here. Usually, I fall asleep easily and have no issues with the surroundings. But the noise from cars driving on Homer Spit Road was noticeably loud and distracting that I never had a fulfilling evening's rest. Plus, I underestimated how cold it got at night. I for sure could have used my portable Mr. Heater Buddy to warm myself from the elements. But I was too lazy to leave my sleeping bag and grab it out of the car in the middle of darkness, lol. Some extra notes... - There were just vault toilets for bathrooms. - No showers. - Unfortunately, no AMP powered campsites to recharge appliances. - This is a first come, first served campground. They do not accept reservations ahead of time. - There was a sign stating that campground attendants make rounds twice a day, but I never noticed anyone. - They don't offer refunds, but "rain checks" may be requested. Overall, this Mariner Park was fine as a campground. It served its purpose for the night, but aspects about it could have been better. I decided not to return here for a 2nd evening after finding more worthwhile areas along Homer Spit to stay at for the remainder of my time in Homer.

Ocean Shores has an unassuming exterior that is meticulously maintained and has lovingly designed…read moregrounds. this hides rooms that are simple yet well appointed and very spacious. The rooms have coffee pot, microwave, refrigerator, and a sink outside the bathroom. The two queen beds have plenty of walk-around space and there is a table with no crowding. The table also has electrical outlets and 4 USB outlets. The large window overlooks a back balcony that overlooks the ocean in some rooms. An older establishment with few outlets, I recommend you have a power strip and USB charging hubs. The owners are gracious and welcoming, going out of their way to help you have a fabulous stay. There are no guest laundry facilities on site but the hosts will direct to other businesses. There is also a nearby fabulous restaurant (The Kannery, $$$) and Stacy's drive-by coffee ($) with excellent coffee. If you like fancy places like Marriott, this is not the place for you. The only thing I disliked was leaving! This is a good-old-fashioned, down-home, comfortable and friendly place to stay.

There's a well-maintained winding path on the property that leads to Bishop's Beach, a stunning black sand beach. The owner, a passionate history buff, is more than happy to share fascinating stories about the area. When booking, make sure to request the first row if it's available. We were fortunate enough to secure a second-row room, which was still a great choice since there's a fence separating the units. The view was nothing short of spectacular.

The grounds included a bbq gazebo, picnic table, adirondack chairs, and to great delight a spa overlooking the Bay with a crisp view of snow capped mountains and vaguely the Spit. There is also the quaintest inset wood walk going part way down the bluff with access to the beach. Our rooms' quality and impeccably clean furnishings continued the luxurious aura. From decor to amenities, our stay had us feeling pampered. Rest came easily in the crisp quality bedding. And relaxation was plentiful as we created each day reposing over steaming coffee in the upholstered chairs with beautiful Bay views from our room. Evening was slow and easy after a soak in the spa and wrapping in the luxe robes provided. Among other activities, we enjoyed the -5 low tide pools at Bishops Beach. Biking the walk/bike path out onto the Spit. Flagship Creamery has the cutest mini $.75 ice creams for kids and a "blow your mind" crepe bomb for the adults, don't miss the bubble station on the deck while you're there! Calvin and Coyle Trail and the Karen Hornaday Park were more family favorites. Our favorite eats were Two Sisters Bakery, Wild Honey Bistro, Alibi, Captain Patties, and Cosmic Kitchen. The "Stay Awhile" vibe was strong our entire time at The White House Inn. Five out of Five recommend.

We stayed here for a couple of days last week. It's a fairly new and modern hotel, but it's no 5…read morestar landmark. Comparing to a stay at Lands End Resort i had last year in one of their newly renovated rooms, this one falls a little short, however compared to the unrenovated rooms, it's pretty comparable. It does lack the facilities of the Land's End in that's there's no restaurant, gift shop, convenience store, or coffee shop. Personally i like all those extras in a hotel. The suite was really nice though, we had a little kitchenette that was equipped with everything you'd need if you wanted to prepare meals. It had a cute 2 burner glass-type stovetop. However, there was no dishwasher, and no facilities available to wash your own dishes afterwards. There was a sink, so all you'd need would be the dish soap, a dish rag or sponge, and a tea towel, to keep your dishes and benches neat and tidy. Seems an oversight not to provide those. The fridge is a full sized one. The bathroom does not have much vanity space on either side of the basin, for 2 people, and i could not lay out all my items that I'd be using. Unusually, the closet entrance was in the bathroom, though it could easily have been accessed from outside, had the door been situated on the exterior wall. It was a strange layout. Not awful, just unusual. Though, the closet doors are mirrored, so maybe its good that they're in the bathroom. We had 2 queen beds, and here we get to my pet peeve wth hotels. They tuck the bedding in so tight, that you feel like you're in a straitjacket. And in this particular case, the bedding came up to my shoulder, so i was constantly wrenching and pulling, to try and make it come up high enough to snuggle into. I had to get up, move the heavy ottoman away from the end of the bed, and wrench the stupid sheets and duvet out, just to remake the bed to how i want it, and how i wanted it, was with the bedding a foot higher than it's current placement. I'm picky with pillows, i like a memory foam pillow, i just can't get comfortable on regular pillows, and end up punching them in aggravation. I wish I'd brought my own from home. It would be nice if hotels gave you a choice, and offered an alternative type of pillow. We did have a sea view, so that was nice. However it was horrible weather when we were down, snowing, gray, and very dark, and the power went out on Friday 13th, so there was nothing to do but nap. I found it unusual that at 11pm, a shutter is closed across the lobby area, and you don't have access to any staff till the next morning. Maybe that's due to it not being tourist season, but I've never stayed in a hotel where there weren't staff in the reception area 24/7. There is a limited vending machine situated inside the laundry room, with a soda machine and bottled water machine. Water was $3, whilst soda was $1. Of course the healthy choice is way more expensive. I'd have liked one of those convenience stores so you can always obtain what you need. Most hotels have them these days. Fortunately, it's situated right across the road from Safeway which is very handy. I'd stay here again, it's not bad.

We didn't really get to appreciate and enjoy them to the full extent since we arrived so late, went promptly to bed, and had to get up early in the morning. But based on the amenities and location, this is definitely one place I would return to if I were ever to find myself in Homer again. Check in was a little strange, being that you had to check in in a separate spot outside of town. But other than that, the entire check in process was smooth. The space itself was clean, conveniently located, and the bed was phenomenal! We enjoyed the jetted tub and the clear skies and beautiful views of the water. Walking distance from the harbor, several restaurants, and shops, this is the place to stay in Homer! Just beware, that if you stay here in the off-season, you are pretty much out on the spit by yourself with almost no amenities available. We ended up eating at McDonald's because it was the only thing open in Homer at 8 PM on a Wednesday night.

The property itself was well-kept. The lodges are right on the beach at end of Homer Spit, and there was some maintenance construction happening on two or three lodges while we were there--inside the apartment, it was completely silent, though. The radiant heat flooring was a nice touch, and it was great to have direct beach access through the back door. This place also has incredibly soft, fluffy bath towels--this is one place hotels often scrimp, so I am always appreciative of great towels. The shower was a bit tricky to figure out, but an employee answered the off-hours phone line and walked us through it.

The staff is wonderful and very prompt with their responses. Our new plan had us staying in the Wolf Den. Upon arrival our suite was spotless and so so welcoming. The suite offers everything you need for a beautiful trip away from home. The yard just off of the suite allowed for our dogs to stretch their legs and have some fun as well. We will definitely be back and will recommend Kenai Peninsula Suites to anyone. The stay was exceptional and the view of Katchemak Bay was second to none. Thank you Kenai Peninsula Suites!!!

Pro: this is one of the most gorgeous places to stay in Homer…read more Pro/Con: it's far away for just about everything. Unfortunately, Homer doesn't have a hostel. This is about as close as you're going to get. We slept in a bed in a room on the first floor of this gigantic house. We arrived late at night. In the morning we walked outside and were stunned by the views! We walked down to the water and were again stunned by the insanely cute/cool cabins. You know the insanely remote, girls-only, tree-house you wanted as a young boy? These kind of fit the bill. I should probably try and stay at them eventually. If you're an uptight travel used to staying in sterile hotels and having your hand-held about every little thing, you should probably check out the Best Western/Holiday Inn/Motel 6 instead. You probably won't like it here.

Outhouse in the back with all the fixings to make your outdoor visit a little more comfortable (being a NYC girl I did well with this!) For a reasonable option in Homer with a real Alaskan experience Seaside farm is your pick!
