So two things: 1) you have to make an appointment in advance to visit (https://www.steelcase.com/find-us/locations/americas/san-francisco-california/); and 2) you need to order through steelcase's website (where not all customizations options are available) or through another authorized dealer (I used www.smartfurniture.com). That said, I was able to book a visit on short notice a few days before New Year's. I emailed and got a prompt response from Pauline. I wanted to try some chairs with/without lumbar support and headrest. She moved a few chairs to one part of the showroom in advance and walked me through the chairs' features. Esp for lumbar & headrest, she talked me through how to adjust them properly and asked questions about my usage habits. E.g., the headrest is an expensive option and I think she wanted me to be sure I would actually use it. They didn't have some of the fabric options I wanted to try on hand, but she gave me some small swatches. My visit lasted 30-40min and answered all of my questions. This is our local mattress store, and we were happy to support it by walking over and engaging with…read moreour local sales people. They were really great, offered us good information and helped us make a good choice and "investment" in a nice Tempurpedic bed. The unfortunate part of the experience was in the execution of the delivery. I paid for their top-tier delivery (VIP or Pro?) but it seems that guys in the truck may work for another company. They did not want to take away the old mattress, and did not want to assemble and install the base I ordered. Eventually after a lot of pushback and phone calling they agreed, and I tipped them on the way out. Later we had trouble with the stability of the bed and thought about returning it. After 3 days I discovered the issue - the assembly was slapdash - nothing was tightened properly. I had to fix this myself, but in the process endured needless frustration due to poor attitude of the delivery/installer team. I made this clear in 4 ways: Internal survey sent to me by the firm, communication directly with the two sales people (separately) that helped us in store, and with the Google review that they asked us to write. Despite all of this, we have heard nothing back after 3 weeks and can only assume they are still using this 3rd party company with terrible attitudes. I wish I had my money back for delivery and tips, but probably will never happen. I can only conclude that an otherwise good company is placing a key part of the customer experience in unreliable hands. After spending over $7k I deserve better, and everyone else does too.

On delivery day, the truck driver did not have my base and did not know why, so they left my mattress on the floor. My sales rep apologized, and then told me I had to pay an extra delivery fee out of my own pocket to have the correct base delivered the next day- then reassured me that I would receive a refund for the original delivery cost and the cost I had to pay out of pocket for the second delivery. I never received this refund. So I paid $200 extra to receive an incomplete order then had to pay $100 extra out of pocket just to receive the order I had already paid for. No contact or follow up from the store. I definitely recommend avoiding this location.

He has the most exquisite taste and extensive knowledge for vintage stainless steel furniture, and furniture in general. The original crappy wooden cabinets that came with our place were falling apart and had to be replaced. Our kitchen is small so I didn't expect it too cost too much, but got sticker shock when I went to Cabinets and Beyond for wooden cabinets that I didn't even like. We just happened to be walking around, depressed, in the vicinity of SS21, and my wife suggested we check them out. Cy, the owner, remembered us as customers from years ago and told us he had branched out a bit. My wife half-jokimgly asked him if he had kitchen cabinets, and wouldn't you know it, he had just acquired a bunch of vintage hospital cabinets that might fit. He showed us them, and photos of his mom's kitchen which he had recently renovated himself. When he gave us a rough estimate for customizing and installing the steel cabinets, I was amazed at how much cheaper it was than what Cabinets and Beyond had quoted us. Cy is basically a one-person operation, with a few hired helpers, so I knew I was taking a chance. But the cabinets were too beautiful to resist for what he was asking. We had a few bumps along the way; dealing with my HOA's rules and some scheduling glitches, but I knew I was going to have to be flexible with this project and go with the flow. Ultimately, Cy and his team did a fantastic job of assembling, customizing, and installing the cabinets. It turned out to be a bit more complicated than expected, but Cy was totally dedicated. He's an honorable person to do business with and takes great pride in his work. Underneath a gruff exterior is a heart of gold. Very opinionated, but very knowledgeable.. Besides stainless steel, Cy finds other interesting pieces of vintage furniture that he renovates into amazing pieces of functional art. Stuff you can't even imagine. We ended up using regular contractors for the granite countertop and electrical work, but the stainless steel cabinets (and single steel sheet wall backdrop) were the man thing, and the end result was a beautiful, elegant, functional, rugged set of kitchen cabinets instead of junk. We are still blown away.
