Buyer beware! This store sells quality products but has terrible cancellation and return policies. I ordered a chair at the end of December and was told it would ship in 1-2 days. In fact it shipped in 6 days and I didn't get a call from the shipping service about delivery for more than a week after it shipped - and after my spinal surgery!! I attempted numerous times on the phone and on email to cancel the order with a Relax the Back employee, only to be told that the chair had been loaded on the truck and there was nothing they could do to remove it - wiich is ridiculous. This chair traveled from CA to NJ and will now be traveling back, at great cost to me and great waste of fuel and time for the shipper. Don't bother with this company - stick with Amazon and get your chair in 2 days, regardless of where you live. read more

It's really difficult these days to find stores in San Francisco that have ergonomic desk chairs available on the sales floor for you to try out, so I'm especially grateful for Relax the Back for filling this niche. This review is based on our two visits to and telephone/email interactions with the folks at the Van Ness Relax The Back location. John and Tim helped us find the desk chair that would be able to best accommodate with the support my partner needed for his back as he works long hours and recently had back surgery. John and Tim are friendly and easygoing people. They're happy to take the time to show you what they know, their inventory, discuss pros and cons of each item and inform you of all the ways you can customize your computer chair. They're NOT pushy salespeople and sent us off with a price quote on the chair we were most interested in to allow us time to consider, budget, and compare it with other options on the market. I called the store and spoke with John, letting him know that we wanted to proceed with the order and John emailed me a copy of the receipt We had the chair delivered to the store such that John and Tim could help us assemble it carefully and make sure everything was good to go. Friendly, patient, down-to-earth individuals who respect their customers' space. I would return to them for their inventory to select from and the pressure-free environment. Other folks will complain about prices. Let's put this in perspective: yes, it's going to cost more than your little two-hundred-dollar crap desk chair from IKEA. That's what we had been using - clearly it wasn't working and got us to where we are now. We are shopping as a preventative measure to keep my partner's back from deteriorating with age. We don't want surgery again - and regardless of your insurance, that surgery will cost you way more than what this chair costs you. I'm happy to invest and pay extra for a chair that was thoughtfully designed and intended to support the human back if it means it's going to last a lifetime and lead to better quality of life down the road. I am a very happy customer of Relax the Back. There are many places to shop, even online, but you'll be hard pressed to find a better selection and assistance than right here. I purchased the Human Touch 7.1 and I'm sitting in it right now. I've had it for a few weeks and am really pleased with my experience. My chair arrived sooner than I expected, the drivers were very helpful in setting it up exactly where I wanted, and made sure that I was satisfied before they finished. The folks at Relax the Back on Van Ness/SF are AMAZING - I bought an X-Chair from them in May 2023 (which I LOVE), and a few months later the vibrating heater stopped working. I called the store to ask what I should do (there's a 3-year warranty on the X-Chairs), and one of the managers, Pam, told me they had a replacement at the store for this, and I could just come by and pick it up. I told her I would need to make arrangements and get back to them, as I live in Novato (North Bay) which is about 30 miles away. Pam asked me which exit in Novato, and when I told her, she said she would come to my house and drop off the part and install the new one for me. I was flabbergasted! I don't remember the last time I got customer service like this! It turns out that Pam lives not too far from me, and she was happy to drop by on her way home from work and install the new part. She showed up right when she said she would, and it took about 3 minutes for her to change out the part. It works great! I would give this store 100 stars if I could, they are absolutely wonderful and their products are top of the line. read more

Great products. Bad service. I recently bought a Tempurpedic pillow here, for a Christmas present. Like other brands, they make many different kinds of pillows. So I wasn't exactly sure which one to buy. I decided on the Tempur-CLOUD pillow. As it turns out, the pillow was too large. Little did I know that the store policy is no returns and no exchanges for bedding products. But that was never mentioned at checkout. When I went back to the store after Christmas to plead my case, the store clerk refused to take it back. If you want to buy Tempurpedic products go to Bed, Bath & Beyond. Relaxing the Back begins by relaxing the wallet , my things are expensive here. The owner, a man who wears his outside parka inside the store is very friendly and a true salesman. I went in for one overpriced foam roller and came out with that and a medicine ball that was even more expensive. He even went in the back to blow it up for me. This seemed unnecessary but it gave me the chance to sample one of their many "take me for a ride" massage chairs and watch another employee, a waifish young man talk on the phone to his friend but do no work. They have a Panasonic massage chair for about $3000 here that is a good investment in the event you are the last person on earth and need someone/something to rub your back. At 6'8" I need special chairs to support my body. Over the past 20+ years I've purchased 3 chairs-- an ergonomic desk chair and zero gravity chair for my office, and I just recently bought another zero gravity chair for my home. Their products aren't cheap, but you do get what you pay for. I've been very pleased with the quality and durability of their products--again, I've had 2 of their chairs for over 20 years with absolutely no problems. I was helped by Tim with my most recent purchase. He was super knowledgeable, very helpful, and guided me to the chair that was best for me. I thought I needed a chair that cost almost twice as much as the one I ended up buying. Tim explained to me how the CHEAPER one was actually better for me. What salesperson does that??? So we bought a chair! It does exactly as I hoped: take pressure off my spine. After it arrived, I literally fell asleep in it after 15 minutes. The salesman was great and he helped us find the best model for my size. I'm a tall, slender man. And yet it is a slim and not bulky looking recliner in our living room. One star (actually only a half off). Delivery was delayed BUT the manager refunded those charges because of the brief delay. So really 4 1/2 stars. I've had very good customer service with John the manager and the owner Pam at this store. I bought one of the LifeForm executive chairs for around $2400. A chunk of change, but as someone who spends a lot of time at the computer, I think finally having a very-adjustable neck-rest (three pivot points) and having armrests that adjust to my smaller frame (I got the extender-arm option: two pivots and a wider range) will be so worth it for my degenerative neck and back issues. I know I do better work when I'm not in pain! In the store, Pam explained the features of the chair clearly and comprehensively, answering my many questions and also made herself available several times on the phone. (I usually checked to make sure she didn't have other customers at the time.) When the chair was delivered, my handy carpenter-plumber partner and I (not so handy) were confused by how to get some of the adjustment features working and were concerned that the chair should have been inspected before delivery. Well, I didn't have to ask more than once: John the manager went way WAY beyond the call of duty to both inspect the chair and to make sure I understood how to work the chair, at no inconvenience to me. If you are in need of a comfortable chair that will save your aching the back - this place has some good options. We tried out the zero gravity perfect chair and provence chair - both we very comfortable and had a nice style. We like the perfect chair the best - gives really good lumbar support. The prices are high - but I think they are comparable to other good quality chairs. It's worth the price for how it makes you feel. The store manager, Steve Rose, who helped us was awesome - very helpful and knowledgeable. We are certainly going to go back to order the chair from him. read more

I'm 5'2" so finding a good desk chair is always a challenge. Now that I'm working at home all the time I *really* needed a good solution but I knew I'd have to try chairs in person to make a decision. I tried (and bought) one chair at Relax the Back but when I got it home it didn't adjust up high enough for my desk. I called Tim and he had me bring it back right away - either to change the piston so it would elevate higher or to get a new chair. He suggested a great new chair from Human Scale and I love it so much. I don't even realize I'm sitting in chair it's so comfortable. My neck and shoulders and back are renewed. I'm sleeping better. I'm 8 months pregnant. I bought a body pillow from here for $216.00 hoping to get some night relief. I ended up not using the pillow at all because my husband brought home a body pillow also. I went to the store to return and the customer service was terrible. They were unfriendly asked me no questions and turned me away. Also, at the time of purchase they didn't inform me, I now know it's written at the bottom of the receipt. Ugh! What do I do with this brand new pillow? Store told me chair was no longer being made- called manufacturer and they said store lied. Manufacturer told me this store has a reputation for horrible customer service. All they told me was call the manufacturer, call a guy who can fix it for $100 an hour, and then I still have to buy the parts! to paraphrase Maslow, people are wrecks when their biological needs arent met. when i dont sleep i dont care about anything. apathy sucks, thats why Relax the Back is rad. they have a full selection of plush, tempurpedic beds and a myriad of deep, penetrating massage chairs. i like it rough and these babies work your muscles good. also, the salesman with dreads is super hot; i got him to test out a bed with me. on the serious tip tho, if you are suffering from a pinched sciatica or are shifting around in your office chair right now it would be in your best interest to consult the people at relax the back. they are very knowledable about all their products and give appropriate recommendations. read more

Why would you think that one store owner would take back the goods of a different store owner? Why would you expect to take back a pillow when it has a tag required by law saying it is new material and thus, never been used. this was the only place I could find (in a pinch) an item my dr. recommended. I had lower back pain when I sit for a period of time; the lower part of my tail bone is damaged. My dr. recommended a special "doughnut" seat cushion to relieve the pressure. I only went to Relax the Back because of my condition and discovered a great store. Best service and support anywhere! This store is the place to go for purchasing an important "medical device"/beautiful chair for maximum back support. I actually ended up purchasing 2 of these fantastic chairs - one for my office and one for my home! Good delivery to both home and office for a fee, but they set it up and make sure it works and they patiently move the chair where you want it. Yes, I am a psychotherapist who sits a lot ... and seriously needed the informative service this store provided me! They patiently guided and directed me with no pressure at all. I knew nothing about these fabulous recliners and thought a recliner might not work for me in business. But they helped me find the perfect fit. It takes time to get things "just right" for a significant investment like this. But John helped me every step of the way and I could not be more grateful and appreciative.
