I started coaching sessions with Chad about 9 months ago, and my experience has been extremely positive so far. Initially, I was looking for help and guidance on finding meaningful work, having felt "stuck" in a corporate job that is OK (but not lighting my world on fire) and on a career path that feels at times completely lacking in meaning and fulfillment. I initially identified and researched 5 coaches and decided to have an initial conversation with 3 whose background and experience seemed to fit the bill. Chad came across as warm, curious and empathetic in our initial chat. He asked some really good questions that made me think. Of the three, he was by far the most impressive because he spent the whole time understanding my personal situation and really "got" my challenge (rather than spending the time explaining 2 or 3 different "packages" I could pursue); I also felt there was a great personality fit. Having now held a number of coaching sessions, in my personal experience I've found that: Chad is extremely action-orientated; we work together on practical solutions that can be applied straight away - small, everyday changes in behaviour that accumulate into bigger life changes - all focused on my goals. Sessions are challenging, energised & highly motivating. Chad asks great questions and offers excellent advice when I ask for it. He knows when to take me out of my comfort zone to move things forward. He has an exceptional memory and is very well prepared, recalling details from conversations months prior, when helpful. He's a great guy and really cares and it's clear from our interactions that he absolutely loves helping people reach their full potential. Chad has introduced me to a number of "tools" to help overcome certain challenges, tailored to my circumstances. The values work we did was particularly useful - identifying values that are most important to me. This was hugely insightful, because I discovered my current work was only fulfilling one of the eight values identified (security). I'm currently working on changing career paths and I use the values work as a framework for decision-making - so that I'm actually living by my values, and leading a more meaningful existence. This is a review for Chad-as-acupuncturist I've had back issues on and off for a while (sciatica, caused by herniated discs). The last time they were "on", I had tried acupuncture from a very well respected doctor (Chinese born and trained, ran his own TCM sports medicine clinic, blah blah blah), and it did nothing for me. But I was convinced that acupuncture *should* work for my condition (inflammation-reduction is something that acupuncture is supposed to be great for) so this time when the pain came back, suddenly and with force, I got a recommendation for someone else, that someone being Chad. When I arrived for my first visit, I was in a cold sweat, tears running down my face and in a state of extreme anxiety not so much from the pain - which was only occasionally debilitating - but from the feeling of helplessness that came with going from finishing a triathlon one day to being barely able to walk the next, and never knowing when the next shooting pain would strike. But I'd read Chad's glowing reviews on Yelp and I figured that even though this was my first time meeting him and crying in front of strangers is generally something I try to avoid, if you couldn't cry in front of an acupuncturist/life coach/Thai masseur/yoga teacher, then when could you? Chad immediately put me at ease both physically and emotionally. His inquiry was holistic. He also has a wonderful presence about him - he listens and is fully present when he is there with you. He is kind and caring. He calmed my nerves both literally and figuratively in that first visit. In subsequent visits, when my condition wasn't quite so dire and I could focus on something other than my immediate condition, I also discovered he's kind of funny, too. In all, I saw him for 3 visits, spaced a week apart. I was also seeing a chiropractor 2-3 times per week at the same time. I think the combo really worked for me. While I *know* the chiropractor was effective (it was pretty much the only thing that worked for me the first time I had back issues), I did notice step-changes in pain reduction the day after I would visit Chad each week, so I'm pretty convinced the acupuncture had a strong positive effect as well. Fair warning, the needle insertion process was not entirely pain-free -- he was literally hitting my nerve. But the discomfort was significantly less than what i went in to get treated for, so I'll happily take the tradeoff. I really didn't care, but for those who have heard that acupuncture is painless, well, it's not always. Also, it would have been awesome if I could have gotten documentation to submit to my insurance company so at least some of the treatment would have been covered but in the scheme of things, again, not a big deal. If I ever have future occasion to use acupuncture, or feel the need for a compassionate and active listener, I'd have no hesitation in contacting Chad again. read more

I was feeling lost, purposeless and stuck. I read a ton of self help books which were very insightful but did not help me personally to figure out what's the thing that is bothering me and causing roadblocks in my life. As nothing seemed to work I became frustrated. That's when I opened yelp and put in some keywords which got me to Herst wellness. Today after completing the program, I feel compelled to write a review thinking that there might be more like me yelping around to find help. I was referred to Chad Herst by my masseuse at the Nob Hill Spa. Im a Type-A, work hard, play harder, not afraid to try something new kind of guy, but had never tried acupuncture because no one really told me about it. After a 5-10 minute phone call (consult) with Chad, I knew he would be "all right" so I made an appointment. His office is clean, bright, quiet, and very relaxing. His demeanor is professional, he's soft spoken, an amazing listener, and soon would turn into a good friend. I came to Chad from a referral by a close friend. I had heard about his amazing talents for months and finally decided the timing was right when I began to suffer from anxiety and mild depression. I had been seeing a somatic psychotherapist and although the sessions were a nice release of emotions and energy, I didn't feel like I was pushing myself enough to change. This is where Chad comes in. From the moment your eyes meet and you sit down to talk you get the sense that he is a true healer: very wise, compassionate and yet someone who will call you on your bullshit. There's no hiding the truth from Chad, and really on your journey of transformation, why would you want to? I decided on the full monty, weekly treatments of coaching, acupuncture and Chinese herbs. It wasn't always an easy process-in fact it's very much an emotional rollercoaster. But my experience with Chad was the best thing I could have done for myself. Through my time with him I was able to transform physically: my anxiety and depression were identified and diminished, my problem skin cleared up and I quit smoking, drink less and cut out my overactive coffee habit! I was also able to transform emotionally, and of course am continuing to do so. That change is a little more private, but through my work with Chad I was able to identify the areas of my life where I was holding back, resisting growth and creating untruthful dramas for myself. For quite a while I'd been very unhappy and unsettled in my job. It had gotten to the point where I was waking up almost nightly in a panic and didn't know where to begin figuring out how to even unravel what had me so anxious. I begin looking for a coach and found Chad through a friend. During the initial 20 minute intro call, I knew that Chad could help me as the questions he asked to understand why I was seeking a coach were very thoughtful, and even in the short phone call was able to understand some of the issues I'd been struggling with. Over the next 10 sessions Chad guided me through clearing away all the clutter to really figure out what my struggles were with my job and career. Each session would include homework comprised of mindfulness practices and writing assignments. Each session's homework was helpful, although some much more challenging than others. There were several of the sessions (around sessions 4 and 5) where I pretty much fell apart as I was working through trying to get past the story and to my truth. But even when I was at my lowest point I trusted the process because of Chad's ability to hone in on the right questions and through his feedback. I always felt like Chad was really hearing me, was very invested in my success. Starting with sessions 6 onward, I've felt more clear in my decisions, more aware of my strengths as well as pitfalls, and more confident in how to create my path forward. I very much appreciated the sessions where Chad (kindly and supportively) called me out on my b.s. and helped me see how I was creating a story that was holding me back. Chad is a great listener, very insightful, and provided me with many great tools that I know I will reference often in the future. If you decide to work with Chad, be aware it's not easy. She always tries to push you out of your comfort zone without making you uncomfortable and she even makes you excited to want to do the work and find ways to grow. She is super honest and very open with communication, which is one of the things I personally appreciate about her a lot. She will make sure to fully understand what you are struggling with and she is not the type to tell you that she is sorry for you out of petty, which is the other thing that I appreciate about her a lot! She always tries to make sure that you understand what she is saying and she never lectures you but asks you questions and leads you to the answer without doing the work for you. This is a review for Chad as life coach. It 's very hard for me to admit that I need help, but finding Chad is almost the best thing that I've ever done. (I only say almost because I have to reserve that for finding climbing.) I recently moved back to the Bay Area for a job in SF. I was under such emotional duress at work that I was getting migraines, depressed, and actually asked to work part time even through I really needed the money. I finally got fired from that job, and during that time my boyfriend developed a crack addiction. There aren't a lot of people who you can tell that to who won't judge. Chad doesn't judge. Really, honestly, listens and absorbs what you are saying without judging. It allows him to see answers because he isn't constrained by ego. I'm in academia, just finished a Ph.D. program recently and haven't been able to find work. Chad is helping me to use this time as an opportunity to connect with deep, negative, emotions that guide my decision making. The other thing about Chad is that he's not afraid of emotion. I think he is the only person I've ever cried in front of without apologizing. To me, that is brave. Most people run away from deep emotions, myself included. But not Chad. I appreciate finding someone who understands that our lives and bodies aren't a bunch of little boxes, all closed to the other boxes. I'm still seeing Chad for coaching, and I'm sure that I will update this review as I get to know him more. I'm super excited he is in my life! read more

Chad officiated our wedding. It was a truly incredible experience. So many people have a wedding that is a show for others, but our was super real because of the intense and profound set of conversations that we had with Chad leading up to the ceremony. He led us through the design of the ritual over the course of seven coaching sessions. We always ended our sessions feeling more open and in love with each other plus more real and seen as ourselves. Holy cow! This was so valuable to us and to our memories. Full disclosure: we were super lucky to convince Chad to do this for us. I don't believe that he does this typically. However, our experience was so deep and rich that I wanted to share it. And the quality of the conversation that developed showed me the value that Chad can provide in his coaching sessions. I am not a patient of Chad and called him for my boss to schedule an appointment thinking he is a psychologist. I left a message and he called me back within 10 minutes. I found out that he is a life coach! He spoke to me for 5 minutes, tried to understand what I was looking for a recommended me a psychologist who he trusted. Seeing how caring he is even for not getting my boss as a patient and still going out of his way, shows that he must be very caring and good at what he does. I have been working with Chad for over a year now, and it has been easily one of the best decisions of my life. I originally found Chad on yelp, and was reserved about a life coach in general. Many times our society tells us that we should figure things out by ourselves, and I felt like I was taking a stretch to reach out for help. Chad was very approachable, comforting, and professional. Walking out of that first session, I already knew I made the right decision. He has helped me to figure out a tremendous amount about myself. I was able to learn aspects of my life that I was either denying, or wouldn't have been able to figure out without a ton of time / reflection (if I ever would have been able to figure it out). You wouldn't just head out on a road trip without a map or toss the flour and baking soda on the counter for cookies with no recipe. Don't approach life without a life coach! Ha! I highly recommend Chad for both coaching and acupuncture for anyone seeking personal growth, to get over mental and/or physical pain, and to be more in touch with their mind and body. I've been seeing Chad for over 6 months and it's been a very fun and fruitful ride. I don't normally write Yelp reviews but for Chad and Herst Wellness I felt particularly compelled. In a nutshell, Chad helped me break out of my nutshell. We are all bounded by thought patterns, emotional triggers from our past, and concepts for our future. Chad helped me break out of so many of my unconscious patterns to create space for me to see who I am. I've seen several coaches and therapists and Chad has this unique ability to get to the deeper core of my issues. In addition, Chad does very incredible acupuncture work on your body. I saw a few acupuncturists before Chad and I simply felt the most moved and cared for with him. If you have the resources, the combination of coaching + acupuncture is particularly amazing though both are amazing on their own. All my work with Chad so far has felt very accessible and applicable to me living a normal (though far more intentional and happy) life in the world. Lastly, one of his greatest strengths is his love and compassion which really inspired me to have more love and compassion for myself.
