They wrap each dish in newspaper to keep it safe for your travels home. If you've never been here, I recommend checking it out. It's hard to imagine you wouldn't leave with a few things that you didn't know you needed. Lastly, it's worth noting that they are very consistent in their brands. So if you buy dishes and a few years later, need to replace one or two due to breakage or wear and tear overtime, they will likely still have the exact same item. I offered to buy her commercial grade housewares if she is willing to wait a month when I get back from Reno, NV. Think dollar store style of business. So today we just bought 3 packages of disposable stove burner covers. Glad we bought different sizes as her stove is fairly industrial and needs the larger size covers. I almost always find something random here to buy. The have a ton of woks, pots, bowls, sushi plates, and pretty much anything you'd need in a kitchen. In my opinion, they could have better quality/better shaped chopsticks. I bought a nice stainless steel sieve/scooper made in Japan that I really like. I also like the three piece plastic tub, basket, lid contraption that I got from here. It keeps herbs like cilantro really fresh. In the past I found cute little ziploc bags and very small netted zipper bags for laundry that have not reappeared sadly. You could easily spend 30 minutes to an hour browsing all the goods here. The employees aren't super friendly but the guy guarding the door was nice when I asked him for a specific item. They didn't have it, but he did his best looking around the store for it. read more

Kamei Restaurant Supply has all your needs for any kitchen/houseware - and it's located on Clement! It's like stepping into a Restaurant Depot (though I've never been, so don't count me on this). The place is big in my opinion cause you will be walking around the aisles looking at every kitchenware. There is also residential and meter parking. You will find plates, sauce holders, chopstick holders, pots/pans, rice cookers, water boilers, etc - the list is endless! Pricing isn't bad, I found bowls that I've thought about buying in Japantown for a few bucks less here (~$6), as well as some chopstick holders for like $2-$5, while some places sell them for double the price. I actually came here because I fell into the matcha hype. I was able to find a set that came with everything, but they also sold individual items for less than what they sell at Japantown - from bowls and whisks to chashakus and strainers. They had a lot of bowl options without a spout and limited options for with a spout. I was able to find one or two sets with a spout. I will say, do your research cause I think with the nice set I got, they probably sold roughly the same on Amazon. I was still happy to walk around the store and check out everything if I ever needed to. They had a Zojirushi rice cooker that I've been eyeing for like $50 less here! Definitely worth a look! Kamei Store, Clement Street, San Francisco I have been a loyal customer at Kamei on Clement Street for many years. I often buy cleaning supplies for my house cleaning business - dusters, mops, plates, and other household items. Because of this long history, I never worried too much about keeping receipts, since I always pay with my credit card. Recently, I purchased a thermal water bottle (around $14). At first, it looked fine, but when I pressed the button, the bottom part of the bottle collapsed inside. The bottle was brand new, never used, and could not hold water at all because it leaked immediately. The original Kamei label was still attached to the box, clearly showing it was purchased there. When I returned to the store, I wasn't asking for a refund in cash. I simply wanted to exchange the item or apply the value toward other purchases. In fact, I planned to buy many more things that day - much more than the value of the bottle - because I needed several items. Instead, the staff refused, saying that without a receipt and because they "didn't know how long ago it was purchased," they could not replace it. What made the situation worse was the way I was treated. While I tried to explain, the staff ignored me, laughed, and started speaking in another language among themselves, making me feel disrespected and unwelcome as a customer. After many years of supporting this store, I was shocked at how little value they placed on my business. In the end, I left the broken bottle with them and went to the shop across the street, where I was treated with courtesy and respect. This isn't about $14 - it's about customer service, respect, and professionalism. Kamei lost a loyal customer because they chose to dismiss and disrespect someone who had been shopping there for years, and they lost much more business in the process. If you are considering shopping here, avoid stores like this - there are many much better options nearby that treat customers with honesty and respect. read more

I got a couple black Japanese bowls that are really cool ... a nice black plate and a strainer for pasta and a strainer for tea. I feel like this is a very good shop and I am satisfied. Teapots, salt & pepper shakers, shower caddies and brooms, get lost in this huge store with deep aisles and cubes of rooms that make shopping here a treasure hunt. For my neighbor, I found glossy bowls decorated with goldfish and for me, basketweave trays the perfect width of my Williams-Sonoma Swedish shelving*, just right for grouping and keeping pantry items organized. The first time I entered this gem of a store I was in a rush but it deserves our time to slowly wander and see the vast amount of practical inventory either to get organized or kit out your kitchen and beyond. I'll be back soon: I need a couple of wok tools, smaller plates to replace ones that are chipped, some organizers to tame my kitchen drawers and a new sugar bowl. I remember my family would take me to these types of Asian product stores when I was little and them incessantly yelling at me, "Don't touch anything," in regards to the break and pay policy. It is like a blast from the past to walk in and now I'm back as an adult in full circle needing these essentials. There are appliances, housewares, every kitchen piece you may or may not need, unlimited plates and bowls, cutlery and utensils, and most items with an emphasis from East Asia. There's literally anything you can imagine here and I guarantee you'll leave with at least one thing going back out. A staple store for literally everything. I frequent this shop often. I'm leaving a star out, because you never know what you're going to get with staff. They do their job well, but can be nicer. Kamei carries restaurant supplies mostly catered towards Asian restaurants. The prices are reasonable and there usually is a good selection of things to choose from. They also have really cute mugs that we use for our home that we can't find anywhere else. It's also next to a lot of Asian grocery stores so it's pretty convenient. The only thing is that parking can be hard to find sometimes since it is all metered parking and usually we need to park a few blocks away on busy days. read more

What a great shop right on Clement Street in SF. They are stocked with tons of kitchen, houseware, and restaurant gear. The price points are cheap compared to department stores and even the likes of Target. They sell a plethora of useful and useless kitchen and household items... plates, silverware, chopsticks, bowls, glassware, mugs, platter, tea sits, tea cups, pots (some big enough to take a bath in), pans, woks, rice cookers, kitchen gadgets, bric a brac...you get the picture. The store is clean and organized. Love that. The staff is hands off and not very helpful or knowledgeable though. -1 Star. The pots and pans are of low quality. But hey this place ain't Crate & Barrel or William Sonoma. Plus I have never bought any larger ticket items from them, so I have no clue about the return policy. I went in very eager to buy my first dim sum steamer. I was very clear about the fact that I was clueless, needed help, and was happy to buy whatever. Specifically asked if I needed a particular size pot to fit the steamer snugly, or some kind of adapter to ensure it fit properly. Was told no, any pot works, paired with a condescending look. My partner and I recently stumbled upon Kamei when we were on the hunt for some coffee maker related items. Totally glad we discovered this gem in the Richmond, as it's a wonderland of kitchen and housewares. The store is primarily very much a restaurant supply destination. You will find stacks and stacks of bowls, plates, and various containers/utensils, etc. Of course, this isn't to say that you can't take advantage of these items to stock your own kitchen. We were very tempted to grab some of the many cute cat-themed plates and bowls. The store also has a lot of other miscellaneous kitchen items that you will no doubt need at some point. For us, we were specifically looking for a replacement lid for a coffee grinder (whose led unfortunately fell and cracked.) While we didn't find this lid, we did find a great bodum replacement grinder AND the perfect individually-sized bodum french press. And to top it all off, I scored a sweet tanooki statue (which now defends us from all those other mischievous ones trying to steal our loot.) Yay for Kamei! read more

I'm talking baking pans (angel food fluted pans, bundts, squares, rounds, tart molds, silicone madeline pans...), pastry blenders, fancy cookie cutters, piping kits. Basically everything but the appliances. And cheaper than Sur la Table and Bed, Bath, and Beyond for sure! Not a baking fan and prefer the simplicity of coffee or tea? Well, you can find kettles, french presses, steepers, infusers, Asian style iron/glass/ceramic teapots, and such. Want to organize your kitchen without breaking the bank like you would at the container store? Bins and storage containers galore, glass jars with the gasket lids, apothecary jars. Other notable finds: burners and pots for hot pot/shabu shabu, rice cookers, servingware, woks, knives... They have both plain (classic white) and decorative dishware (Asian ceramic with animal/floral/nature motifs). The decorative dishware make good gifts ;) they're even cheaper than the ceramics at the Chinatown gift shops surprisingly and on par with the look of the ones they sell at Japantown for 2x the price. Price wise: I think the other reviews make the prices seem crazy cheap, but that isn't the case. I would say that the items are generally well priced for their quality, but some things are marked up. Suggestions: - Dollar stores: aluminum bakeware and plain glassware - Daiso: glassware, ceramics, ramekins, chocolate molds - IKEA: has many kitchen staples for quite cheaper (and sometimes sold in sets too); snap and lock storage containers, french presses, spice jars - Costco Business Center: industrial quality bakeware, silpats, and appliances - Kamei: house plants, specialty bakeware, fancy dishware, sushi, hot pot, sauce bottles, matching sets of silverware, matching dinner sets, housewarming gifts For fancy and specialty goods, I think Kamei's prices are some of the best in the city.
