I bought a car here a couple months ago for around 8k, plus the salesman, a gray haired man in shorts advised me that due to the mileage on the 2008 Toyota, to also buy this extended warranty he highly "recommended", which would give me another 50,000 mile coverage for the whole drive train. When I say recommended, I mean pushed on us. My son had the car for about 50 days when he was driving home on the freeway at night. The car completely lost power. As in, it just quit. On the freeway. In the fast lane. He had to fight it to get it out of the lane of traffic into the emergency lane and not wreck. We had it towed to our family mechanic (Caliber Auto Care) who had never dealt with the warranty company before. This is how it started, our mechanic put a camera into the engine and discovered a HOLE in the engine, which was absolutely dry of any oil. As in dry for so long there is no way it wasn't like that when we bought it, and this is what our mechanic said. No way it was my son's fault. This 2008 Toyota had had an ENGINE recall that was never fixed. Hertel sold us a car with an ENGINE RECALL and didn't say a word about it so that WE could address it. That year's model Toyota had a manufacturer defect that caused the rubber seals to allow all the oil to leak out and cause... A rod to break off and puncture the engine. It threw a rod. Now this warranty company immediately requested we pay for the mechanic to drop the oil pan ($600). So we did. They finally sent an adjuster, who asked us to authorize and pay for the bottom oil pan to be dropped. Our mechanic explained that we didn't need to do that for him to see the hole, with the camera. The mechanic said he would never need to drop the bottom oil pan and that it was apparently the warrant company's way of chipping away at the cost and push it off onto us. Now we called Hertel and told them what had happened. They sold us a complete LEMON, and on top of that talked us into buying an extended warranty from a company with shady tactics. We were never told by the salesman that there was a cap on repair costs, only that they would cover the whole drive train for another 50k miles. Now, Hertel has just left us hanging with what amounted to an $11k (warranty and TTL) paper weight. That could have gotten my son in a bad car wreck. Do not trust this dealership. Most certainly do not buy the extended warranty plan they are PUSHING on you. They prey on working people here. read more

Bought a Lexus Gx470. Needed so much work. Timing belt needed to be done. CV axles had torn boots. Leaking so much oil. Parking break was busted. They didn't budge in their price. They knowingly put a terrible car on the lot to sale. Then Low balled us on our Lexus trade in because the bumper paint didn't match?? Learned so much from buying from a typical used dealership. The best part is on Lee's description of the GX470 he wrote they people are "buying these cars and shipping them over seas." NO TNEY ARE NOT!! We bought an Acadia there a couple months ago. We spent more than we wanted, and it has been a nightmare every since. The AC acts up. The traction control is messed up. The engine was barely holding on. If we hadn't taken it to a mechanic about it's many problems, the engine would have fallen out while driving. We can't afford constant mechanic work on this thing. Every vehicle on Hertel's lot is in great shape and an excellent value. I test drove 3 and fell in love with a little Fiat 500e. I had an awful time getting financing from my own lender and the process ended up taking what seemed like forever, but Lee was patient and supportive through it all! I bought a 2004 Infiniti G35 from Hertel several months ago. The car itself turned out pretty good (it was a one owner, well maintained and documented car) and Lee the salesman was great to deal with. Plus I got a really good deal because the car had a 6 speed manual which makes it a hard sell for most people. I also liked that the car hadn't been detailed, which to me is a huge plus since most used car dealer cheap out big time on detailing and end up leaving the paint a swirled up mess. So on purely the buying experience and the vehicle itself I was pretty happy. The owner on the other hand, not so much. I got a call about a week after purchasing it saying they had forgot to do an inspection. Most likely because when they replaced a camshaft position sensor they used a non-OEM one that pretty much immediately popped a CEL as I drove it home after purchase so it wouldn't have passed. I replaced the sensor with an OEM one and problem solved. The owner told me they needed a current inspection to get my plates for me. I was offered a choice of bringing the car to them and they would take it to get it inspected and I'd have to hang around there for an hour or two, or I could take it somewhere close to me to have it inspected and they would reimburse me. I chose to take it to a place a couple miles from me and have it done there. I let them know I had it done (inspections are electronically filed with the state now) and was told they would get my plates the next day, just to call in the afternoon to see when to come by and pick them up. Next day I call and was told by the owner's wife that they were unable to get the plates, there was additional paperwork they needed. I replied that I had to been told the day before by the owner the plates would be ready, so what was the additional hold up? Her husband (the owner) immediately got on the phone and said if I was going to get an "attitude" he would, and I quote "slow walk my registration to the DMV and it would be the full allowed 60 days before I'd get my plates". Seriously? Because I asked what the additional hold up was? That's how you treat customers who pay for cars full in cash? He finally calmed down a bit and said he'd get it done. Plates show up, Lee is there (who again, was very pleasant to deal with), handed me my plates and said there was a paper key of some sort that went with the car but he couldn't find it but I should get it when I got the refund for the state inspection that I'd paid for twice (once when purchasing the car and again at my local inspection station) so to look for it in the mail. Never got either. Called about it, no one called me back. Kind of forgot about it, wasn't a lot of money, $25 if I remember right. But it is the principle, promises made should be kept. That alone would be enough that I would not do business with them again. read more

I've purchased 6 vehicles for my family over the last 9 years from Hertel Auto Group and have had a great experience each time. 2 Mustangs, Honda Civic, Corvette, Explorer and working on a Jeep Grand Cherokee as I write this review. I've known Craig Hertel for years and can testify that you won't find a more honest person inside or outside of the car business and his team emulates the same.
