They got one star because the car existed.
DO NOT USE THEM! We pre-booked online and thought it was safe because Hertz is a global brand. I was wrong. I normally give nice reviews and give companies the benefit of the doubt, but in this case, I feel the need to keep people from replicating my mistake.
When we arrived at the airport we were given the option to pay 83 euro for insurance or have 670 euro held on our card for the entirety of our trip for potential damages. There was no guarantee of how quickly it would be put back on and I also got the feeling that they would easily find damages as the man was able to quickly rattle off the charges for a scratch or dent. On top of these charges there is also a mandatory holding charge of 100 euro on your card regardless of insurance for fuel (making the charges 183 or 770) . There was also no promise of when this money would be unblocked or returned.
When I asked if we could somehow leave 100 euro instead in cash to ensure that when we returned we would promptly get our money, the man behind the desk pretended not to speak English. When I called him out on it he admitted that he had understood but he did not want to answer the question. He smiled smugly as after I repeated the question, and once again told me he does not speak english.
I tried to rent a car from Avis next door who do not have all these additional charges, but they were out of cars. With no options left and having already paid for the initial cost of the rental, we felt we had no choice but to pay the 183 as I did not trust them not to make fake claims and charge us for pretend scratches.
The car itself was a fiat and was fine. The location was at the airport which was convenient.
When we returned the car with a full tank of fuel (it cost us 15 euro to fill it up), there was initially nobody at the stand. When a man did come, he filled out the form, claiming there was a scratch on the car before seeing we had full insurance and crossing it out. There was no scratch. He then forgot to circle that the car's fuel had been returned "full."I am a careful reader of forms and noticed this error and returned to make him fill out the form correctly while I watched since I think this could have also been a trick. I will update this when I find out whether or not my 100 euro was returned to my card. I have a picture with the time and date showing we returned it full so I am on a mission to get that money back. I would have waited but I want to make sure nobody else makes the same mistake I made.
