This was the absolute worst experience we have ever had renting a car. We reserved a car well ahead of time through the Chase Travel portal. With our level of Chase card, we have rental car insurance. Upon presenting our certificate of insurance, the agent said they didn't have a car for us in the range we reserved, so that reservation was now invalid, and they would have to charge us for a SUV since that was supposedly the only car they had. This was obviously not true because they had a ton of cars in the garage, but since they couldn't charge us the insurance, they had to make their money up elsewhere. At a US Hertz if they don't have the car you reserve, you get an upgrade at no extra cost, but here that was not the case. They refused to rent us a car until we agreed to accept the SUV at a rate that was $250 more than what we originally paid. Not feeling like we had another option, we paid the extra and took it. Upon returning to the US, we tried dealing with Hertz customer service to refund our money. Initially they said as Gold members, we should be able to get our money back. After weeks of back and forth, and them asking for all the documentation, they finally told us there was nothing they could do because it was actually independently owned. The PV office said we signed the new contract, which meant we agreed to the upgrade cost. After that I put in a credit card dispute and did get some of my money back, but it took a lot of time for something that never should've taken place. This car rental is only out to make money and will do whatever they can to get it. A shady operation that preys on tourists. Avoid at all costs! read more

I reserved a Nissan Versa (Group F) with Hertz at Tepic Airport. Both the Hertz website and my email confirmation clearly stated that the deposit without optional insurance would be 25,000 MXN. At the counter, the agent refused to honor that and demanded a 35,000 MXN deposit instead. She also refused to process the charge in pesos and forced it in USD at a very unfavorable exchange rate, which essentially amounted to over 37,000 MXN. I was also forced to sign undisclosed, one-sided contract clauses that give the company the ability to charge whatever they want in the event of an incident, without any recourse. These sorts of contracts are illegal in Mexico (they are known as "leoninas"). Despite my objections, they would not release the car unless I complied with these abusive terms. Sadly, these kinds of practices are all too common with car rental agencies in Mexico. I am reporting this to PROFECO (Mexico's consumer protection agency) and to my credit card company. I strongly encourage any traveler who has been taken advantage of in this way to also file a complaint with PROFECO so that these abuses can be investigated and prosecuted. Beware of the Hertz car rental in PV! First, the actual rate ended up doubling compared to our reservation. Complete bait and switch on the rates. But what can you do when you land in PV and are in a hurry to get to your destination? The staff knows you're stuck and takes advantage of the situation. This Hertz lures in customers with the Hertz name but betrays the Hertz name. Second, the staff doesn't care at all about safety. We booked a small car, in the category of a Nissan March. We rented a Nissan March in the past, and it was good enough. But of course, that car was not available, and our only option was to take a Fiat Mobi. What's a Fiat Mobi? We had no idea it was a mini-city, 4 door with a tiny 73 HP engine. It's top speed is about 120 km/hour. We told the rental agent we were driving to Tequila, Guajajara, and Manzanillo. He said the car is new and would be fine. Totally the wrong car for a trip like that! It was a horrible little tin box that struggled with every hill and felt unsettled in the mountain twisties. I've driven my share of cars over the years from hyper-performance cars to simple econoboxes, and the Fiat Mobi is singularly the worst vehicle I've ever driven. Third, the rental process is very slow. Don't expect to breeze through the line and get your car if you have status with Hertz in the U.S.! It's a slog to check-in, take the shuttle offsite, and then deal with the drones preparing the cars offsite. This Hertz is a disgrace to the franchise! read more

We booked our rental car months in advance online not reading any of the reviews. We secured a good rate. Hertz did not require a credit card to hold the reservation so I called to confirm if I did something wrong. Nope, did everything corrected. Asked if I needed anything else, they said no all good for my future trip. Arrival: the price goes up by $600! for a lesser car than what we booked. We had to add all sorts of required items upon arrival that Hertz website and customer service did not require online or over the phone when I called. Not cool, but I was stuck because I needed a car to get to my destination. We spoke to the agent and told them our travel plans. We were driving from Puerto Vallarta to Tequila to Guadalajara to Manzanillo back to PV. The agent was shocked of our plans and was telling us about how much they like Guadalajara. The Fiat Mobi is 73 horsepower city car. The Hertz agent should have told us the roads to all our destinations were curvy, hilly, mountainous, and more power was required, and dangerous in a Mobi, but they did not. The Mobi made it but it was the worst rental car ever but it was great on gas mileage. I will not recommend this rental agency in Puerto Vallarta. read more

On 12.14.2023 at 8:00 am I called Hertz roadside assistance and advised them my car had an intermittent brake warning light and asked that they set aside a similar 7 passenger vehicle for exchange at 3 pm at Hertz Puerto Vallarta were I originally rented it. At 3:10 pm I arrived at Hertz Puerto Vallarta and Liz the manager in charge said they only had a 8 passenger suburban but that I would have to pay a serious difference in rate. I asked how they could not simply adjust the rate given they failed to set aside a comparable vehicle as requested that morning. Liz answered that their system did not allow for such am adjustment. I asked to speak with the general manager and she responded he was out. I asked Liz to have the general manager to contact me when available and she responded I would have to contact the 800 number and submit a request there. I ended up leaving with the failing car because Hertz was not willing to adjust the rate of the bigger vehicle in order to resolve this matter. Incredible but true. read more

We are returning our one way rental here. As usual when we come to Mexico we take pictures and a video of the car before starting our trip. Car rentals in Mexico are awful in trying to charge you for existing marks as well as small wear and tear. As in a small smudge on a tire. When we returned the car there are small ... and I mean small marks on the front wheel tire ... our video shows marks as well. However we are debating with them whether they get to charge us. Can you imagine if they did this in the US? No because even car rentals realize that when marks are smaller than a quarter it's not worth the debate. So beware of this car rental they will try and rip you off. Take detailed photos a d videos of your car. We prevailed and they are not charging us. It's late and all we want to do is get to our place. We returned the car in great shape with a full tank of gas. It should not be this hard. Hertz PV stop it. read more

We are Gold Members of Hertz and usually prefer renting with Hertz over other companies. However, we've had terrible experiences both with pick up and drop off with this Hertz location. At pickup the actual price was nearly $200 USD more than what I booked the car for while in the US, citing local fees and the insurance we booked for were not included for the 4 days we reserved the car for (which it was when I reserved while speaking to customer service at Hertz US). And then at drop off, the staff tried to blame existing damage on us, citing a small rock chip was going to cost an entire new windshield (which costs over $600USD), when the rock chip was already there when we picked up. The pickup Hertz employee took a few pictures but upon reviewing them at drop off, the photos from pick up were so granular that they were unreliable. So if you DO decide to continue with Hertz, make sure you check and document every small chip. Or EVEN Better, use another rental company. There are plenty. read more

I reserved a car weeks ago. They did not have any cars available and told me it would be hours before they had one. I suspect they would not have had one in hours either. I could tell they wanted me to just go away. They then told me that insurance for the car would be $300 for 5 days (my friends arrived 4 hours earlier, they had been charged $200 for 7 days insurance for the same kind of car I reserved). I told them to refund my money and I would take a cab. They said a cab would cost $300 US dollars! I walked across to the cab stand. It was $100 to Rincon de Guayabitos. Just returned from Puerto Vallarta. I rented a car from Hertz online the day before I arrived in PV. I've had terrible experiences at several car rental agencies throughout Mexico, and as I researched car rental agencies in PV I couldn't find any by the airport that had anything except a 1 star review. Seldom do they actually have the available that you rent, and while they quote a very reasonable rate for the rental, you HAVE to buy their insurance, which is ridiculously priced. Every agency is the same. And usually when you return the car there are additional costs you didn't know about. This time was different. The car was ready, it was clean, yes, the insurance was ridiculously priced and was not quoted in the price online, but having checked around with other companies the price was no more than any of the others. The location is as close to the airport as you can get, the shuttle takes you from airport to Hertz, then back to airport when you return the car. The price they charged me matched the quote. Turns out these criminals have a playbook: they tell you the car you reserved is not there, then tell you there is a more expensive one available, BUT they HAVE to charge you the full price. Then they try to convince you that you need all sorts of insurance (you don't) and when/if you refuse, they'll sneak a charge in there anyway. If you actually end up renting here, TAKE LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF PICTURES OF THE CAR. On the return, they'll point out a scratch and say: "that's new." My flight was at 7:40 AM. Their location opens at 7. So they told me when I was picking up the car that I should park it in the airport and drop the keys at their airport location. Surprise surprise, nobody showed up until 7:15 AM by which time I had to run to catch my flight. I called customer service, they told me to leave the keys inside the car and contract there. I did that but what happens if someone just takes the car and leaves? They still haven't sent a rental invoice, so I am concerned they will either charge extra time or lost keys or something. This place is Honestly a scam, they did not have the car I rented, being a gold member and having already declined insurance did help. They made me wait with my family 50 minutes and they strong arm you into buying insurance or charge your card $3000 and make you wait longer, there's no manager to speak to (even though they're sitting in their office) and I've just never been treated this rudely before. THE WORST RENTAL CAR experience of my life! When we arrived (after a long flight w/ an infant), they did not have the vehicle we reserved (or anything comparable). They NEVER apologized or made ANY ATTEMPT whatsoever to rectify their mistake - what did do was try to upsell us to a much larger and more expensive vehicle (totally unecessary size for 2 adults and a baby). Hertz had no cars a aisle despite our reservation and confirmatio. they did not notify us they had no cars available and left us to our own search for a rental.
