I live much of the year in Mexico and I occasionally need a rental car. I've completely given up on the "major brand" car rental companies. Those universally present two problems: 1) You never know what it will *actually* cost because there are always "surprises" (additional charges, different vehicles than reserved, you name it...) at pick-up, and 2) You never know what surprises will be in store when you return the car. (Claims of "new" damage, claims of missing equipment, etc...) Usually at extra expense. I've tried a handful of the Majors and each time I've been frustrated (at best) and cheated (at worst). Gecko Rent a Car is like a fresh sea breeze. They're locally owned and operated. They're friendly, competent, and -- most important -- They say what they mean and they mean what they say. Their cars are all late-model, good condition, and spotlessly clean. But the most attractive aspect is their "This is what it costs" pricing. It's all-inclusive: Unlimited mileage, full coverage insurance, liability insurance. What they say is what you pay. It's refreshing, to say the least. Be aware as they are scammers, we rented a truck paid additional funds for reducing excess. only to be told when putting in a claim we are liable for all damages as there is a clause somewhere in there online agreement that if your reversing you are not covered. the other excuse they tried to use was that the other vehicle was stationed so excludes cover. Gecko used to be the greatest but since their recent change of ownership, the level of customer service we've all come to love and count on has really suffered. Only Gil remains as the type of service provider Gecko built their business on. Right now the new owners relatives have taken over and they do not seem to understand why Gecko customers have returned again and again. I for one will have to recommend that my friends and Airbnb guests who travel to Jalisco and Nayarit go elsewhere for car rental services. My boyfriend and I had made a reservation with one of the big car rental places. That was a huge mistake! Very sketchy. We didn't move forward with the other company and called Gecko to see what they could do while we were still at the other place facilities. Gecko staff was very friendly and helpful since the first minute on the phone. They picked us up from the other place. The girls at the office showed us the different driving rules. They even helped us to download offline Google maps. They went above and beyond to make sure we would be safe and enjoy our vacation. The car was in great condition and very clean. I absolutely agree with all the other 5 star reviews. The price they quote you actually, really does include all insurance and taxes, no bait and switch going on at Gecko. We worked with Gil, who speaks flawless English, answers his cell phone when you need him and when he found my husband's cell phone in our returned rental car, he called us and said he'd bring it to our hotel when he got off work. I have rented with Geico on four different occasions now and I have been blown away each time by how easy they are to work with and how reasonable the prices are. Every vehicle I have rented has been in excellent condition and they don't get crazy if there's a little scratch or ding when you return the car. I see from the 5-star rating that they don't really need this review, but I feel compelled given how absolutely HORRIBLE my experiences with other car rental agencies in Mexico have been (particularly the big names like Hertz) -- making this a complete and very refreshing outlier. The people at Gecko are not only highly ethical and comport themselves with the utmost fairness and integrity, they are great by every car rental agency standard. Of all the places throughout the world I've rented from, they are the quickest (so many places are so painfully slow with the process--the last thing you need after a long flight), most reasonably priced, and just overall friendliest. In connection with the latter I'm referring to an excellent, clear one minute tutorial on the rules of the road in Mexico and some advice on cool places to go outside of PV. This business is wonderful! It's easy to say when all goes smoothly. But I can say that even when life throws you a rock right into the wind shield. Yep, a rock chip just a little bigger than a quarter. Now I must say that Gecko is quite good at explaining the insurance and the deductible. So I knew I was responsible for this damage. I knew the deductible was 15,000 pesos ($882) usd) for the Toyota Hilux. Now I just replaced a wind shield on my ford truck back in the USA, so I knew it would be about $350 to $400 for a windshield. When I returned the truck I was expecting a 6,800 pesos charge. They had every right to that amount. The Gecko agent looked at it, called the shop manager over to look. In my life experience, anytime a shop manager looks at something, it was twice what I thought it would be. I braced myself as the Gecko rep said it would be 700 pesos ($41 usd) for the repair. The words of "that's it?" Slipped from my mouth. I firmed my stance as I was prepared to hear about some made up fee or service charge that I have grown accustomed to in the states. "Is 700 pesos okay?" The agent asked. I relaxed my tough guy stance, smiled and just said "Si". My point to this story is even when Gecko could have taken advantage of this gringo, they didn't. They kept to the high ground. Charged only what was fair. So yes, this business is wonderful!!! read more

This place is WORTH THE HYPE. Probably the best car rental experience I've had anywhere. Lightning fast friendly private shuttle from the airport. The car was clean, new, and all ready to go. The staff were really friendly and walked us through quirks of driving in Mexico. The fee is the whole fee, no hidden charges or taxes or insurance. And the BEST part is that for the return you can bring the car back with less than a full tank, and someone from Gecko will hop in the car, drive you to the gas station where you can get gas, and then they will drive you to the airport and drop you off - all for free. This is the place to rent a car! They are up front about their pricing and happy to help, even last minute. We were with a large group in Punta Mita and realized we could use another car. We wrote an email in the morning then came by a few hours later - it was obvious they were really busy, but the owner Adam was professional and relaxed and incredibly helpful. What a joy to deal with compared to other car rental companies. Contacted them due to other reviews on Yelp. Initial inquiry was by email and they responded quickly with exact rate for the week. What is really nice for Mexico is that the rate includes all required insurance, taxes, etc. NO hidden fees added later. When I arrived to pick up the car they were waiting for me and the process took all of 5-10 minutes. I asked about additional drivers and was surprised to learn that anyone in our party could drive it as long as they had a valid driver's license. No additional cost. The car was a new VW Jaeta. Other vehicles looked similarly late model. When he found out there were four of us with golf bags he said he would have a larger vehicle when we returned the car so we did not have to drop some off at the airport. I have never said this about a car rental company....a pleasant experience. read more

I'll add to the 5-star praise here. Having rented with the "nationals" in Mexico before, I'm super stoked to have found a real, legit, convenient, no-bullshit rental service. Gecko has nice cars, stand-up employees, and they'll deliver the car to you, as well as pick it up when you return to the airport. We got a pretty much brand new white CR-V with only a few thousand miles on it for less than what the main branded rental agencies advertised. Add on that these guys don't pull any of this "oh you have to buy extra insurance" BS that other agencies do. It's all inclusive in the price. And on top of that, cash discount. From start to finish, booking was super easy. Avoid the tourist touts in the airport, walk out to the parking lot past the OXXO, meet your dude, get your car and be on your way. There were no hidden extra costs and the price for car + insurance was clearly stated on their website and confirmed through email interactions well before we arrived. The free airport pick up and drop off went smoothly and our Chevy suburban was in good condition. While the car battery died at some point during the trip, it wasn't a huge deal as they arrived right away to replace the car for us. Tomas also helped us out by hooking us up with Captain Oyster to take us out on his boat for a snorkel trip to the Marietta Islands. This review is actually a long time coming.. but I guess you can say that it is just a true testament to how amazing our experience was! I surprised my hubby with our first-ever Husband and Wife (without the kiddos) trip for our 10th wedding anniversary in July of 2017. I am a self-proclaimed "queen of deals" who will spend hours scouring the internet reading all the reviews, checking out all the things. I am also a self-proclaimed "Budget" Rental Car enthusiast- and upon checking into the rental prices and seeing a cool $27 for a 5 day rental there- I jumped on it! That is.. until something kept bugging at me to keep looking. Cut to a few weeks before our trip.. I go to do some digging on the Budget there and saw that they were lucky to have 1 star. So.. then began the searching and scouring the interwebs again. Lo and behold.. (Insert 'ahhhhhh' and halo glow music here) I come across Gecko Rental Car. The process was seamless- different? Yes. I mean different due to the fact it's not your typical type type enter and it's confirmed. You speak to an actual human (via your most preferred method of contact, which for me is email). Adam was amazing! I gave him all the details, specifics and he came back with $215 price point for 5 full days- all insurance included- AND The best part? They pick you up and take you BACK to the airport to get your car! We got an amazing little sports pickup truck and just loved driving around town for those few days. They were waiting on us to arrive *we had given them flight details* and were ready within 5 minutes of returning the car to take us back. I can't say enough wonderful things about them, truly. He is from CA and moved to the area to start a new life. It was so fun hearing his story and getting to enjoy a true, genuinely amazing customer experience. Only place to rent car in puerto Vallarta! I've rented cars for over 30 years in PV and until I found Gecko it was always nerve wracking. Been renting from them for nearly 10 years without a hitch. First time was by recommendation and took a bus from Walmart to Bucerías and got rental car there. After that, I would pick up car at airport parking lot. They now have a free service from airport to business location/just a minute away which is what we used this week and was so convenient. There is no language problem as English is very proficient. We rented a casita in Bucerías for a week and wanted a car to get around. I originally made an online reservation with Budget, since I use them all over the US. My one week rental quote went from $325 to over $700 once Budget tried to add the "required" insurance, taxes, and fees. I walked out and took a taxi from the airport. A few days later we went over to Gecko Rent a Car (http://www.geckorentcar.com/) and had a wonderful customer service experience. Yesmin was very helpful and we had our car in 15 minutes. All the costs were shared up front with no surprises. When we returned the car, Adam arranged transportation for us to get back to the airport. If you need a rental car, this is the place to go. The people are great and very accommodating and they make everything really easy. I've never had a problem and I've use their services probably last five times in Mexico. I highly recommend them. Once again, Gecko comes through. We were in Sayulita in May. My son left his Hydro and leash in the rental car. No problem.. they said they will hold for us and pick it up on the next trip. Well we went on the next trip, and they had the Hydro and the leash. Let me start by saying these guys are fantastic! I have rented cars in Mexico several times and have always been shocked at the final bill when returning the car. Definitely not the case with Gecko, what they qoute you is the full price you pay without any surprises. When you make your reservation they will send you an email explaining how to get past the shark tank (time share sellers) and out to the pickup area at the airport. You will be offered a cold drink and then you will be driven to their office to do the minimal paperwork and offered cold beverages again. They have their own travel guide thats about 100 pages with lots of useful info! Returning the car was a breeze you can pay with USD or Mxn and get about ten percent discount for cash.They will take you back to the airport and drop you off! Overall a hassle free experience. Nice guys,good rates, free tansportation to and from the airport. What more could you ask for? read more
