The booking process was seamless and the all-inclusive pricing including insurance makes this a no-hassle, 100% confidence, straightforward booking. Communication was excellent. My flight was delayed by almost 2 hours, which would have had me land past their closing time. They reached out to me and offered to park the car in the airport parking lot, or to reschedule my reservation. I requested for parking lot pickup and the process was easy and I was on my way soon after landing. I also got a flat tire during my trip, and their emergency number support was top notch. Jose arrived quickly, changed my spare and took me to a tire repair shop nearby. The car was clean, reliable and in great condition. I highly recommend them again for anyone traveling to the area. I sure will next time I visit Puerto Vallarta!

Those universally present two problems: 1) You never know what it will *actually* cost because there are always "surprises" (additional charges, different vehicles than reserved, you name it...) at pick-up, and 2) You never know what surprises will be in store when you return the car. (Claims of "new" damage, claims of missing equipment, etc...) Usually at extra expense. I've tried a handful of the Majors and each time I've been frustrated (at best) and cheated (at worst). Gecko Rent a Car is like a fresh sea breeze. They're locally owned and operated. They're friendly, competent, and -- most important -- They say what they mean and they mean what they say. Their cars are all late-model, good condition, and spotlessly clean. But the most attractive aspect is their "This is what it costs" pricing. It's all-inclusive: Unlimited mileage, full coverage insurance, liability insurance. What they say is what you pay. It's refreshing, to say the least. I love these guys and I highly recommend them if you're in the Bucerias / Puerto Vallarta corner of the world.

At this branch, both staff and the manager falsely insisted I was required to buy supplemental liability insurance. When I showed Sixt's own website stating that the included third-party insurance already meets legal requirements, they changed their story and claimed that Jalisco has a higher mandatory minimum. This is straight up a lie. If they try to pull this trick on you, know that Sixt's third-party coverage is USD 37,000, while Jalisco's requirement (based on minimum wage) is about USD 32,000 per the most recent official sources. After 30 minutes of arguing and showing multiple sources disapproving their lies, they finally gave me the car--while threatening that police would pull me over. During this time, another customer (a tall white male) came to return his car. I asked whether he had been pressured to buy the "required" additional insurance. He told me he had never paid anything extra and he was never pressured into getting extra insurance at all. I can only imagine they pull this trick to target whoever looks vulnerable (I'm a single Asian woman traveler). This branch is extremely dishonest and deeply disappointing--especially given that rental car agents are often visitors' first point of contact with Mexico. This behavior reflects poorly not only on Sixt, but on the country as a whole.

We were extremely impressed (and pleased) with the front desk personnel, who helped us get the last economy car at a reasonable price. Can't say enough good things about the team working at the front desk. Our car was great, and after a longer than expected (past the 11pm closing time) we returned to the AVIS office around midnight, concerned about where we could safely park the car. When pulling through the front parking area (in front of the sales office) we noticed one of the night workers (Jesus) who still finishing up processing returned cars, etc. He immediately came out to see if there was anything wrong with the car, and we explained that we were late getting the car back (after normal hours). He was extremely helpful, allowed us to leave the car there (in their locked/secure parking lot) alleviating the need for us to take a Taxi from our DT PV hotel back to the AP, to formally return the car. Nothing but great things to say about the entire Avis team in PV, and the overall experience we had renting the car yesterday. Great Job Everyone. Thanks, G & C

Yes, that's a lot, but you're paying for the convenience. The cars are housed in a garage next door, so it's a short walk to get your vehicle. The exit / entry area is located right next to a gas station, which makes refilling the car a breeze too. We've been very happy with the cleanliness of the cars we've rented here, all automatics with good air conditioning (which to us is a must-have in PV's hot, humid climate). Always take photos and document any and all scratches, dents, etc., we've done this with a video backup and have never had any disputes or issues. This is a good, solid, and trustworthy place to rent a car if you're arriving via cruise ship in Puerto Vallarta.

The baseline cost for an automatic car was about 50 dollars with insurance for the day. Others were pressuring me into higher insurance higher car rates etc. Second, they have a delivery service of 300 pesos where they will drop off and pick up the car totally worth it if you're not close. Third, i had made the mistake thinking that I could drive stick when in fact i hadn't in a long ass time(totally bone head move on my part). And after 10 minutes realized that driving an hour and a half in a country i didn't know wasn't a good idea. I called Alma who was working that day and she totally understood and was so nice SHE DROVE ANOTHER CAR TO ME THAT WAS AUTOMATIC. She told me not to worry and she was glad i called closer to PV than in Sayulita. Her kindness made all the difference! What could have easily been a nightmare was 20 minutes fix and we were off. Having transparency and someone thats got your back is all i need when renting in another country and prestige does that well. I give a glowing recommendation and thank them times a million. With our level of Chase card, we have rental car insurance. Upon presenting our certificate of insurance, the agent said they didn't have a car for us in the range we reserved, so that reservation was now invalid, and they would have to charge us for a SUV since that was supposedly the only car they had. This was obviously not true because they had a ton of cars in the garage, but since they couldn't charge us the insurance, they had to make their money up elsewhere. At a US Hertz if they don't have the car you reserve, you get an upgrade at no extra cost, but here that was not the case. They refused to rent us a car until we agreed to accept the SUV at a rate that was $250 more than what we originally paid. Not feeling like we had another option, we paid the extra and took it. Upon returning to the US, we tried dealing with Hertz customer service to refund our money. Initially they said as Gold members, we should be able to get our money back. After weeks of back and forth, and them asking for all the documentation, they finally told us there was nothing they could do because it was actually independently owned. The PV office said we signed the new contract, which meant we agreed to the upgrade cost. After that I put in a credit card dispute and did get some of my money back, but it took a lot of time for something that never should've taken place. This car rental is only out to make money and will do whatever they can to get it. A shady operation that preys on tourists. Avoid at all costs!

Both the Hertz website and my…read moreemail confirmation clearly stated that the deposit without optional insurance would be 25,000 MXN. At the counter, the agent refused to honor that and demanded a 35,000 MXN deposit instead. She also refused to process the charge in pesos and forced it in USD at a very unfavorable exchange rate, which essentially amounted to over 37,000 MXN. I was also forced to sign undisclosed, one-sided contract clauses that give the company the ability to charge whatever they want in the event of an incident, without any recourse. These sorts of contracts are illegal in Mexico (they are known as "leoninas"). Despite my objections, they would not release the car unless I complied with these abusive terms. Sadly, these kinds of practices are all too common with car rental agencies in Mexico. I am reporting this to PROFECO (Mexico's consumer protection agency) and to my credit card company. I strongly encourage any traveler who has been taken advantage of in this way to also file a complaint with PROFECO so that these abuses can be investigated and prosecuted. Travelers should avoid this location -- extremely dishonest practices.
