Booked and paid in advance. Arrived on time and "computer is down - might be 5 minutes, might be hours." They have no backup - no way to conduct business and take a signature for the car I already paid for. Was told by another customer this is a common problem at this location. System back up in about 20min and more staff arrived to help catch up. The car was good. Mixed bag - just be ready for possible delays. read more

My insurance set up a rental reservation with this location, I was expected to receive a call confirming my reservation. I never received a call from them. I tried calling several times with no one answer. I called again the next day with no answer. I called my insurance to cancel since they could not be bothered to even answer their phone. I set up a reservation with Enterprise and received a return phone call within minutes. read more

I reserved a car in April at the Fredericksburg VA location, and I made the reservation more than 1 week before I needed to pick up the car and I prepaid in full. The day of my pick up i received a call 40 minutes before I was to pick up my car and they said that they overbooked, and they had no car for me. No assistance was offered to help me find another car, because of this I was a day late getting to my destination. This was very poor customer service. I understand the overbooking as I am a Hotel Manager so I know it happens, but if it does not only do I find them other accommodations but we pay for it as well. I did not expect for hertz to pay for me a car but the least they could've done was secured me a car somewhere else and definitely not call me 40 minutes before I am supposed to pick it up. Never using Hertz again - The most unhelpful car rental experience I've ever had. Hertz failed to disclose that they require a physical credit card for holds while their car is being driven, even if a reservation is made online/paid for in advance. Neither of the employees present seemed interested in helping troubleshoot this problem, claiming that there was no way to enter my credit card information manually (I was currently waiting on a replacement card). Their attitude was nonchalant and disinterested at best. They even suggested that my friend, who drove me, give his credit card/ID to be held, which was inappropriate. read more

Very poor customer service and employees are just rude. Also, the requirements to obtain a rental using a debit card are extremely particular and they do not work with you. I was denied the ability to rent a vehicle even though my credit score was well over the minimum requirement and had way over the amount of money in the account needed for rental. No other options were offered to me they just told me they couldn't help me. I went up the street to Enterprise and was immediately approved for a rental and the service was amazing and fast. read more

What a disaster... I rented a vehicle and paid for it online. I selected a Mazda 3 "or similar" vehicle for a cross-country trip. I was supposed to pick the vehicle up at the Mechanicsville, Va HLE. On the day of my pickup, I arrived a bit early and there was a sign on the door with a cell number to contact if no one was there. I called, and the gentleman (Jonah) said he would be there shortly. He arrived and that's when the whole thing went south. I noticed he was driving a small, Toyota Corolla, and when I asked (because there no other vehicles in the lot) I was told this was my rental, and that it was "similar" to a Mazda 3. He explained that they were short on cars and he had to go to another location to get this vehicle. My wife, who is disabled, was highly irritated at the prospect of a 1700 mile trip in a tuna can. As I was leaving the next day, I had no choice but to accept the rental. Once we went inside to complete the paperwork, I was then informed I would need to put down a $500 deposit that I would get back upon return. By this point I was ready to walk away, but agreed to pay it. This was my honeymoon and my wife and I don't get the opportunity to travel much. Luckily, because I was using a debit card, the deposit was kicked back into my account within 12 hours. During our trip, the vehicle performed well, aside from the maintenance light that came on 1/2 way through. Once we established that this was a mileage based notification, we kept on. We were set to return the vehicle to the same location on Friday, and we arrived at the HLE early. There was a sign on the door saying that if no one was there, to leave the keys with Collision One, a business next door. I was informed by the receptionist that she had a "pile of keys for Hertz," and that no one had been at the Hertz location for at least four days. I decided to call Hertz to let them know I dropped the vehicle off, and after almost 20 minutes of waiting, I FINALLY got someone. She told me I needed to take the vehicle to the next location, which I informed her I was not going to do, because that's not what the sign on the door said, and it's not my job to cover for their staffing shortages. I was told there was not going to be any additional charges. The next day, I checked my account, and there was a $62.00 charge on my bank card from Hertz. I got no email or text from them explaining the charges, so I contacted my bank and reported the charge as fraud, and had my card turned off. I'm still waiting to hear back. Renting a car from either Hertz or Enterprise is nothing but a scam. The gentleman at the location was about the only positive part of this experience. read more

I was very dissatisfied my rental car had a awful order when I got the car.The car also had some scratches and dents the car was also not full of gas it was at a half tank.Hertz told me that I would get my money back if the car was clean and a full tank of gas. Great staff and wonderful customer service at this HERTZ Fredericksburg, Virginia location. I am a former Enterprise Rental car customer but was extremely frustrated with the Enterprise Rental Car office at 4810 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, Virginia location. The Enterprise Rental car staff were rude and unprofessional. Their cars were extremely dirty. The Hertz rental car office in Fredericksburg, Virginia is light years different from this office. I don't know what the fuss is about with some of these reviews. I had a great experience with this Hertz. It was my first time renting a car and they made the process incredibly painless. So nice and helpful. The car was great although it did smell smokey, but that's not their fault. They very clearly say no smoking allowed in their cars. Some people are just assholes. This was a last minute reservation. We reserved our vehicle through AAA. When we arrived the vehicle we'd reserved wasn't available, so they upgraded us to a nicer, larger vehicle, which was nice. We did have to wait about an hour for the vehicle to be prepared for us. They had to clean and change the oil on the vehicle. Overall, I have no complaints because we ended up with a great vehicle for our roadtrip, and the service was very good from the Hertz customer service. We would definitely use this location again. read more

Garbage, garbage, garbage! Yelp should allow negative stars for places just like this. This Hertz is pathetic. I try to use Hertz for business travel, and am fortunate enough to travel though FBO's at airports. FBO's will make sure you have a car since you're paying them a fortune to park there. Therefore, I have not ever really had to deal with Hertz directly. I have points that I wanted to use for a leisure trip. I reserved a car, online at this location, but the stupid Hertz website wouldn't let me use my points. So I called the location directly. I told them I had a reservation but, I wanted to use my points for it. They then told me that it didn't matter because they wouldn't have any cars for me anyway. They said the website is a third party thing and doesn't have any knowledge of the inventory at the store. Which, true or not, doesn't make sense. How do you allow people to make "reservations", which may not be gauranteed? The guy then told me that he was going to have to turn something like 15 people away on the day I had reserved a car, including me, if I kept the reservation!!! How do you run a business this way? No wonder they are all going out of business. The next closest Hertz, according to the guy I spoke with was in Alexandria. Which wasn't true, and shows the caliber of wits your dealing with here too. I called Culpepper, Woodbridge and Alexandria, they all told me the SAME THING!!!! What? This is crazy. I will never do business with Hertz again. I'll go with anyone else that can guarantee the reservation I've booked. ANYONE! Ridiculous! DO NOT USE THIS PLACE, YOU WILL BE TRULY DISAPPOINTED AND POSSIBLY STRANDED. We made a reservation over the phone for a minivan for the weekend as we were heading out of town. My husband spoke with an agent to confirm prior to leaving the house to pick up. Excellent experience!! The service was professional, fast, and everything was as expected. I have never had a car rental pickup and return go as smoothly as it did with this Hertz location. The employees were professional and helpful when I initially called asking about how to guarantee a certain type of vehicle required for our trip. The employee was patient and answered all of my questions in detail. When we arrived the car we needed was clean and ready to go. Pick up took about 10 minutes and drop off took 5 minutes. No unexpected charges, hassles, or attempts to upsell us on things we didn't need. I highly recommend renting from this location. read more

Beware before you decide to rent with Hertz and this specific location. I had my car in the shop for repairs and had a rental for a couple days. Was informed that my car was not ready and needed to extend or get a new rental contract. Called hertz to let them know that I had an online quote and they stated that they could get me a daily cost that was cheaper; therefore, I requested the quote given by phone. When I returned the car, I was charged another rate and was informed that they quoted me a number that apparently was not allowed and was billed for the higher price, which was more than the online quote. One - The company lies and their headquarters will not resolve the issue. Two - If I knew the quote that was given on the phone wasn't allowed, I would of purchased the quote online and saved via my triple A membership. If It was possible to give Hertz 0 out of 5, I would. My boyfriend works over night & is in the car majority of the time. Another Hertz location gave him a vehicle from Florida which had bad tires and no de-icer in it. So happens he was stuck in Virginia during a winter storm warning with freezing temperatures. I spoke to two males, Ryan & Justin on three different occasions. Both of their stories were inconsistent. Justin promised that he would either switch the cars out & if he wasn't able to, fix the windshield wiper fluid since it was frozen. My boyfriend called to confirm and Justin flat out said he could not fix the car. Those two are lying dirt bags & I hope one of their loved ones gets stuck on the side of the road in a POS too. I can't even begin to express my experience with this company. The service has been ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. When we went to pick up our reservation, they had nothing available. Every single car they had was due for maintenance and said our only option was to give us a damaged car TWO SIZES SMALLER than what we requested and take it all the way to Richmond to get the vehicle we needed. Well, we went and did just that but the representative changed our contract without our knowledge so when we got the Richmond location, guess what? They could only give us the same small car which was damaged and dirty! We just dealt with it and decided to squeeze our family and luggage in a compact car (mind you, we have a 15 hour drive ahead of us). On the day of our vacation, the car didn't feel safe to drive in because of the existing damage so we decided to go out of our way to exchange it. As we got close to the location, the tire blew out and guess what? No spare, no jack. We called their roadside assistance and they said we needed to call and pay for a cab to take us the location. I mean, this was absolutely ridiculous! Its your car! And not even the one we requested! After going back and forth between Hertz saying they would pay for the cab and the cab company telling us they said no such thing, the tow truck was the only helpful person and took us to the Richmond location. At the Richmond location, they tried to help in the end (after being yelled at by a representative there) and told us the Fredericksburg location should have offered us coverage for the vehicle (which they didn't) and should have taken care of this from the start. The only reason I booked my reservation with this company was due to the fact Hertz has a partnership with my employer and after everything I have experienced with them, I would NEVER give them my business again. I'm expecting a call from corporate in a few days and based off the negative reviews here, I can see this location has screwed more than enough people over. Just rented my first car from this company, and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. Staff is very friendly, and I was very happy with my vehicle and rate. The only thing I did not like is that I called and set everything up over the phone as I was literally 5 minutes away and in a time-sensitive situation, which I told the guy. When I got there, everyone was already out and I had to wait a while which threw off my schedule, but I know that can't always be prevented since they have to leave for pickups (that's just me being picky lol). All in all though, I would definitely rent from them again and most likely will very soon. read more

I'm putting this as a zero as well, I am the boyfriend driving the car that Jackie M. is mentioning in her post. Both Justin and Ryan were useless as I spoke with them too. The windshield reservoir is frozen solid, we are hit by a snowstorm and I have nothing to use to get the ice off of my windshield. Justin stated to call back and promised that either I would get a new vehicle or they would correct the problems on the vehicle. So when I did Ryan picked up and stated that they had no vehicles except extremely small ones, and to bring the car in to fix it. I asked him how he was going to fix the problem with the washer fluid with it being frozen, because it was nothing but water! Are you going to drain it I stated? He said no I will put deicing fluid into the reservoir. I stated that it was full and frozen so that will not work clearly. I have some common sense about vehicles and pulled the drain at the bottom of the tank and flushed it with hot water and then filled it with the proper fluid out of my own pocket. Hertz is a great company and I have never had an issue ever as I rent cars monthly! Except for this location and the two people who brush everything off and don't do their job! My suggestion is to get a new crew at that location Hertz! read more

ZERO from us as well. As a wedding gift to their sister, our sons "rented" (paid) for a rental car for the 2-week honeymoon for the couple's trip to Disney. Not having rented a car before, we made the reservations through our local AAA office two weeks before the wedding- using Hertz because of AAA's recommendation- and because the price was less than Enterprise. After reading these reviews, I got a little nervous and called the Hertz location directly and spoke with Ryan on 4/29, two days before the pick up day. He assured me everything would be taken care of ("no worries") and that he would be there on Friday, May 1, when they were supposed to pick the car up at 1pm. At 1:15pm, my husband and I were driving by the Hertz location, so we stopped to make sure everything had gone well for the pickup since we didn't see our daughter's or her fiance's car on site. When I spoke to the employee standing outside the building (I didn't get his name), he said they had come by and he had told them he didn't have any cars and sent them away. He said he'd told them they could "try back" around 3:30pm or 4pm, as he might have a car available then. As if it was some consolation, he told me he had already turned away SEVEN other customers with reservations that day since he didn't have any cars available. (Them being one car short for us, I could see happening. Nothing less than poor management would account for being 7 cars short!) No apologies. No "I'll see if I can get a car from another location" or "I'm trying to get something for them." Just "reservations aren't guaranteed". WHAT? I thought that's what a "reservation" meant!!! Talk about a mother-of-the-bride in panic mode! I immediately called AAA to complain- (they called me back 2 hours later)- and drove across the street to Enterprise. Neal at Enterprise was my hero! He almost matched the price ($20 more) we had from Hertz (but I guess you can make your price as cheap as you want if you don't have any cars to really rent out), and had a car cleaned and ready for them 20 minutes later. My daughter and her husband had a car for their honeymoon on Saturday, May 2- but NOT because of Hertz. read more
