We rented a car from Hertz out of London Heathrow airport. We chose every coverage possible ahead of time and was quoted 1322.42 pounds. At the Hertz airport rental location, the agent said we accordingly have super coverage, which was a huge upcharge up to 2036.36 pounds. As I had travelled extensively in the states for work, I never double checked the rates during the pickup, as I paid what was already quoted. After travelling all night on a plane, we did not bother to look at the small print on the little form that I initialized. Why would we? It should have been as quoted. This is classic bait and switch which I never encountered when travelling in the states. Buyer beware! P.S. Credit card dispute will not refund the money because basically its covered under Hertz's contract that any issues, you are responsible for them. The car was rented at LHR. As everyone knows England is a very rainy and muddy place. Hertz added 35 pounds to the bill for extra cleaning. My wife and I have been to England every year for the past 8 years and this extra cleaning fee has never been added at ay of the other rentals places. We will never use Hertz again!!! read more

Generally a poor experience (more details below) but the kicker was getting a parking fine from Heathrow drop-off after being told explicitly by Hertz that I shouldn't pay the £5 fee online - instead it would (supposedly) get added to my Hertz bill. Now Hertz want a £42 'administration fee' and I'm waiting to find out from Heathrow how much their fine will cost. Other problems: - Initially being given a smaller car than we'd reserved, trying to make it work with two screaming kids coming off an 11hr flight, then after much time and negotiation eventually getting the size of car we'd reserved. - After queueing to pick up the car, we were told we should have gone to the Gold Member desk for faster service, which is in a different building. Did that when we dropped off the car, no-one at that desk, waited for ages with other people, eventually someone at the back of the queue went to the main building and reported that they had loads of people waiting to help. What's the point of having this Gold Member desk? - On arrival, unclear how to get to the rental car location. The guy at the 'Arrivals Information' desk at Heathrow T5 says "I think it's out there somewhere", the sign for 'rental cars' takes us to the Europcar desk (which wasn't attended), no-one at Hertz picks up the phone and googling for it didn't help. Eventually I found at the bottom of one of the emails from Hertz that we need to find where all the bus stops are, and then go to stops 26 and 27. The bus then takes forever to arrive and get to the rental location. None of this is fun when carting around children and luggage. - After dropping off the car, had a question about the bill. The guy helping us couldn't look up our reservation (despite me having the various emails and reference numbers) and needed to get the signed agreement from the car, which had already gone to be washed, and it took seemingly forever to find it. Stressful when we have to take a bus to catch a flight etc. read more

I don't know what the other reviews are about but for me, I have been renting from this Hertz location for over a decade and have not had any issues at all. The shuttle bus is efficient and the drivers are great, the return process is super efficient and the team's outside there are very nice. It costs money to rent a car.. period... if you don't want to pay for a rental then take the bus. London has a fantastic public transport system. read more

Do not book Hertz rental in the UK. I rented a car for a month, it was in terrible condition. Check engine light came on 10 minutes into the drive and the Heathrow office is impossible to get through to. I left 4 messages with 3 different contact numbers and not even a call back.just got an email that there was a parking infringement which I have to pay and not only do I have to pay a fine to a third party, hertz have the cheek to charge me a £45 admin fee for passing my information on which I did not give them permission to. POORLY MAINTAINED AND DANGEROUS CARS THAT WILL ENDANGER YOUR SAFETY We had a flat tire and were completely unable to change it on our own because the wheel was totally corroded and couldn't be removed from the car. We called for the roadside assistance they require in their car, which took over 4 hours. The kind gentleman who helped us said that the wheel was corroded and we could not have changed it safely at all with the jack in the car because he had to hammer the wheel off. Trying to do it on our own might have caused the car to fall off the jack onto us. When we checked the other wheels on the car - all four were corroded. We were lucky that we made it to a safe place to wait for assistance, but imagine if you were alone in a dangerous area or in the middle of a motorway? When I pointed this out to the staff at the rental agency upon return, they said "my car is like this" and "many cars don't even come with a spare nowadays." They then charged us over 100 GBP for the roadside assistance and have not responded to any emails or calls to their "heathrowadmin" contacts they "referred" us to for problems. We lost a whole day of our trip dealing with this issue and we are lucky we weren't seriously injured. Wheels on a rental vehicle should not be corroded to the point where they cannot be removed without a professional hammer and professional jack. It took multiple attempts waiting on hold to get through to Hertz, with wait times on hold over half an hour, only to be told they don't see the charges and to contact the local office where I picked up the car (calls to them do not go through). STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!! I seriously can't stress that enough! Like so many other previous customers we, too, have become victims of the Hertz car damage scam. I WISH I had read the reviews before my last car rental from them. When we returned the vehicle the guy inspecting it accused us of changing a tire and damaging the wheel in the process. Of course we didn't replace any tires on a rental! We would have called them to do that if something had actually happened. If you are able to rent from another location or company, PLEASE do so. First, there is no communication in confirmation emails or signage at arrivals on how to actually get to the Hertz location. You have to stand outside near the buses and wait for a shuttle to pick you up. There is no schedule and no area marked for this. The shuttle is quick and drops you off at the rental building where we waited for about an hour to get a car. We were told that our original selection would be insufficient for the amount of people (even though their website said the sedan we selected would accommodate 5 people and luggage) and basically forced us into upgrading to a Mercedes. Then forced the additional insurances. We felt very taken advantage of. This is no one's first rental experience, so we knew what to expect. Hertz definitely manipulates their customers into spending more money. We finally load into the vehicle, which no one comes out to explain or see if we have questions. We navigate their horribly labeled parking lot to exit and finally start our trip. We returned in Edinburgh which was much smoother. Rental return location on paperwork was not findable. I circulated the airport three times until stopping to ask a cab driver at a fast food restaurant off airport, who sent me to a different location than paperwork. As a bonus, Hertz UK charged me $101.66 for 'parking violations' at Terminal 3 when I never ever stopped there, except when limited by the flow of traffic. They provided NO evidence of any parking violation - the link Hertz provided did not work. So I was charged over $100 by Hertz for nothing. Very bad show. read more

I have rented from this Hertz at Heathrow airport 4 times in the past 2 years. The service here has always been great by the staff at the counter and by the shuttle drivers. The location is very close to the airport so its easy to get to and from the terminals. I will recommend not upgrading as you will see significant price change and they will try to get you in something bigger if you are an American. You don't need it in the UK. Also if you add the gas and insurance expect your bill to be 3x what you were originally quoted online. This has nothing to do with this Hertz facility but really overall. I still use Hertz as I have had my best experiences with them. So this will just be my spot until they lose my trust. Thank you read more

Fraudulently charged me for a scratch on the car's wheel that was clearly there at the time I picked up the car.

Hertz Heathrow are beyond disgusting regarding their business practices. Firstly, when it comes to customer service they are impossible to contact by phone. Leave a message and never hear anything back. Secondly, they forced me to take a car that I did not want - an electric Vauxhall Corsa, when I requested a petrol car of a smaller size. Not being from the UK, they failed to tell me that this car commonly has parts stollen from it (google Corsa cannibals). About half way through my rental, the hood and bumper were stolen from a private driveway by an organized crime gang. The police mentioned that this happens all the time, the tow truck guy who took the car away said it was the 8th one he'd seen, and the employees at Hertz Birmingham (who replaced the car) said it was the 5th one they'd seen. They're now trying to charge me $11k to repair it. I saw the itemized repair bill which was $4k, and they've invented $7k of added charges. This is obviously a way that Hertz make their money in the UK. DO NOT use Hertz Heathrow and DO NOT rent a Vauxhall Corsa in the UK. read more

Beware of this companies business practice. They will overcharge you since they have your credit card information. I am (but will no longer be) a gold member of Hertz. I booked a Tesla Model 3 from Hertz UK via their website. The booking was confirmed at ~35 GBP per day. When I arrived at their Heathrow office they saw my booking and, after the normal up sell for insurance , we were on our way. Due to traffic around Heathrow, we were two hours over our return time. The car was checked in and we were told the receipt would be Emailed. I expected to be charged for an extra day's rental. Instead, not only were we charged for the extra day, but they charged a daily rate of ~118 GBP for the for the ENTIRE rental period. Just want to warn renters that Hertz UK scams you BIG TIME! I helped my parents rent a car from them and I will NEVER do it again. They made a big point about renting us a new car. Yes, the car was nice, but they use that as a ruse to add big charges when you bring the car back with normal wear and tear. The person met us at the curb and was RUDE, yelled at us that they had rented a new car and look at how we brought it back! Then they proceeded to point out two tiny scratches on the hubcap. They charged my parents hundreds of dollars for the damage and more than a hundred dollars for "loss of use"...meanwhile the next renter drove the car off within the hour. I would never rent a car internationally from Hertz again. Customer service at Hertz provided no support. After a lengthy on-hold period, Hertz told me I must contact the Hertz location. They did not provide the phone number and suggested I drive back to the airport to speak with someone. Hertz could not even look up my international rental reservation. This is a review of Hertz Rent a Car location at London Heathrow. I've used Hertz many times for business, and by far this is the worst car rental pick-up I've ever experienced. We'd arrived overnight from San Francisco, and, through our AAA Travel Agent had a confirmed reservation. Well that was a joke - apparently no one really had a "real" reservation. We were instructed to take a numbered ticket, and our name would then appear on an overhead monitor (felt like a US DMV facility). When we looked, we were about 15th on that list. After waiting over an hour, we'd moved up to number 6. This was at 1:00pm on July 18th. There were a significant number of very unhappy customers waiting inside and outside the Hertz building. A French couple told us they'd been there since 8:00am. Nobody at Hertz was telling people what was going on. I asked to speak to a manager, but was told by counter staff that no manager was available. In my opinion, this is the worst customer "service", I've ever experienced, and it raises significant doubt about Hertz's viability. read more

I usually rent cars from Hertz when traveling but was a bit nervous about the Heathrow outlet because of bad online reviews; however, I could not have asked for a better experience there. I can't explain the bad experiences others might have had, but I found the service to be speedy and friendly with everything working beautifully from start to finish. Check-in was quick and easy, as was turn-in at the end of my visit. No problems whatsoever. For those visiting from the US, I make two suggestions: (1) be sure to rent an automatic, because driving on the right side of the road and sitting on the right side of the car pose enough challenges without having to shift with your left hand; and (2) rent as small a car as will accommodate your needs since many UK roads/streets are much narrower than those in the US. DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THESE GUYS I rented a small car from Hertz to use for a family emergency. The car was damaged when I picked it up which they verified. I returned the car in the same condition it was given to me running perfectly. One month or more later I received an email stating I owed them $1744.13 for a clutch repair that apparently I had caused !! I am 67 years old and was a car mechanic my whole life, I have driven hundreds if not thousands of "standard" transmissions. I currently own a Tacoma that has a clutch. I KNOW HOW TO DRIVE A STANDARD TRANSMISSION. Of course I wrote to Hertz UK and to Hertz Europe but they dismissed my writings and demanded full payment. They then sent the case to a collection agency in Canada who demanded payment or I would lose my credit rating. They basically forced me to pay !! I would give ZERO if I could. Upon vehicle return their associate scoured to find a small window chip which was insignificant and which possibly already there when I picked the vehicle up. It was night time and raining when I picked up the vehicle, no one walked and inspected the vehicle with me or signed off on conditions. I brought the vehicle back, it was raining again. They proceeded to find a chip which looks nearly like very small raindrop and baited myself to sign something electronically that I acknowledge the damage. He advised after I sign I am allowed go into the office to speak to a manager. The manager then proceeds to ask "why did I sign?" and that they cannot do anything about it, he didn't even want to go out and have a look! Well I signed because their associate (looked like a 3rd party) didn't advise what I was signing and forced me to sign under duress before being able to speak to anyone. This is a highly shady practice and by the looks of it the inspectors were not even Hertz staff but a 3rd party who are hired to gauge customers. I was charged not only 70 pounds for the tiny chip (which I know can be fixed for less) but also charged another 45 pounds as an "administrative fee". I will never use Hertz UK again. Easy to get to and from the Heathrow airport with the free shuttle from arrivals. Once in the office, the line is not long at all. Plenty of seats after you check in. Sales rep was not pushy at all with adding add ons and so on. Car, is parked on the side, with keys inside ready to go. Easy process and on to my way shortly there after. Word of advice, for any situation. Read carefully what you're agreeing to before you sign. Simple mistake cost me 200 USD. Other than that, stay to the left and have a good trip. read more

Their staff must have some profit-sharing scheme going on - similar to all the insurance add-ons they pressure you to needlessly buy. We were charged $60 in extra cleaning for a small amount of crumbs from our baby. It literally was just crumbs. When challenging the fee, just met with what you'd expect from Hertz, rude and disinterested staff. I can see why they are on the verge of bankruptcy, Good riddance to bad rubbish. Do not rent from Hertz in England. I pre-payed for my rental online (over $1k for a week rental of a small van). After my vacation in England, upon reviewing credit card charges, I noticed that Hertz charged me $670 on top of the $1k I pre-payed. I called their service line and they said I accepted charges for additional coverages ($675 in BS coverage!!!!!). They offered me 30% off the coverages. I'm still disputing. We reserved a one-way rental from Heathrow to Glasgow, Scotland. Everything went fairly smoothly during both check-out and return. I had pre-paid for the car. Upon booking, I was informed that we would be charged 41.66 GBP when we returned the car. However, I was actually charged 71.25 GBP, which is nearly twice as much. I booked cars in both Belfast City Airport and Heathrow for a recent vacation I specifically verified before travel that I would not be charged for spouse as additional driver which is a benefit of Hertz Gold and AAA. Rented for 3 days in Belfast, at first they wanted to charge me for additional driver but with some persistence on my part they removed the charge. When I turned in the car the Hertz agent assured me that I would have no problem at Heathrow as the rules are different because it is in the UK (HUH?), I reminded the guy that Northern Ireland is in the UK. On July 6th we arrive at Heathrow Hertz wait half hour, place was not crowded, get to the desk and am told that there is a charge for spouse, that Hertz Gold membership in US is not the same as UK, 'computer says no'.... etc. I go through the same routine again, spend at least 30 minutes to complete the transaction, The agent (who was very nice) did remove the charge and gave us a very nice car, a diesel Skoda, huge improvement over the banged up Nissan Micra we had earlier in the week which is why I added a star. Why can't Hertz implement a world wide policy that there is no charge for spouses/partners. Avis does not charge a fee to add spouses, domestic partners, employers, employees or companion drivers for disabled renters. I recently rented from AVIS and will do so from now on.. Good riddance to Hertz, I also cancelled the FREE Hertz Gold member that starts to auto bill $60 annually after the first year, cancelled the membership (and cancelling it was not that easy).. A few weeks later.....we receive a paid invoice from Hertz for 72 pounds for bus lane violation, day of arrival July 6th, there were floods all over England gridlock everywhere, we were trying all sorts of detours and apparently we drove in a bus lane by mistake, a camera must have recorded it and we just got an invoice from Hertz that we were billed 72 pounds. Tough to beat $170 for the week. Nothing sketchy throughout our experience. We even asked for an extra day on the car, and they gave it to us for free. Pros - Good vehicle, clean, in good shape, the engine sounded kind of rough though. - Extra day was only $33, but my husband talked to someone ama got a complimentary extra day! - Shuttle bus to and from Hertz and Heathrow. - Ok customer service. Nothing to write home about. - Process of getting the car and returning it was about 30 minutes. Not bad. Cons - No customer service in terminal, just a kiosk.
