After an automobile accident on I-81, I rented a vehicle from Hertz at the Tri-City Airport as they were the only place within a 100 miles open on the weekend. I told the agent that I was going to D.C., with a rental for two days. When I contacted them again, I was told that there would be an over $500 charge if I left the vehicle in D.C. as an "unauthorized" dropoff. When I called Hertz customer service, they told me that this was a privately owned location and that they could do nothing to assist. Would not recommend under any circumstances. read more

The staff were fantastic. I returned my car and checked in for my flight, only to realize that I had left something in the car. They had already taken it to a different lot for servicing. Someone from Herz immediately drove to the lot, retrieved my items and brought them back to me at the counter in the terminal. They actually put the customer first! My experience was a nightmare and I returned the vehicle 2 hours after the rental and was still charged for a full 24 hour rental. The brakes were messed up on the vehicle. Overall I give the rental a 4.5 but they did nothing wrong. I came in town for business and I picked up my car faster than getting my luggage. 24hrs and a global "CrowdStrike" later, I drop my car off after hours (no issues). My only complaint was after hours started at 5pm. Small airport, small town lifestyles and family quality of life (we ain't working all day and night). I'll be back! read more

I really loved the new Ram 1500 they gave me.. although it could use some running boards for the vertically challenged.. my main issue was that it was obvious that the person who rented it before me smoked and had a large, hairy dog. It was so bad that I had to vacuum it out myself just to make it tolerable to ride in it. I think it definitely could've been cleaned better and more thoroughly. read more

To start, I arrive to pick up my vehicle and they simply didn't have one even though I had a reservation. I was hoping hummed around for over 2 hours before a vehicle showed up for me. I lost hundreds of dollars on planned activities for our whole family that evening because we were 2 hours late leaving home. I received no discount for the car being two hours late. The van was also supposed to seat 7, but no way 3 adults will fit in the back seat of the vehicle I received. One adult was unable to sit back and buckle their seat belt. Do not rent a Chrysler Pacifica and expect to seat 7 adults. Just not a pleasant experience and won't likely rent from Hertz in the future. read more

Terrific experience when visiting family several weekends ago. Very friendly staff and high quality Jeep to make it to my destination in Southwest Virginia and back. Hertz prices have typically been too high for me but this location was reasonable and competitive. No trouble getting in and out from a time perspective. Horrible! 0/5 stars if I could. First, I was given a truck instead of the car class I chose (Toyota Camry size). Second, to get the correct size I had to come back the next day by 5 pm, cutting my time with an old friend short. Third, when I returned the car I made sure to take a picture of the dash showing the mileage and that the gas tank was full, as I always do. Three days later they fraudulently charged me $13 dollars for 1 gallon of fuel. I have called for the past week and a half and am always told "the manager will look into this tomorrow" but never get a call back. I have called and even spoke with the manager who assured me she would reverse the charge and she acknowledged my picture showed the vehicle was full of fuel but still no reversal of the charge. All of this is contingent upon the fact that I even get through because 90% of the time they don't answer their phone and they have no voicemail setup either. My emails go unread too because every time I call they tell me to send a picture via email which I have already done three times now. It's not the money that bothers me, it's the principle of this company giving me the wrong car, making me come back from my visit to get the right car, and then falsely charging me for fuel when I have proof I returned it full. Then they don't even have the courage to answer my calls or emails and be a decent company. I don't plan on ever renting from this Hertz again, as they are an independent company (GSP Transportation out of SC), and not the corporate Hertz. This is probably why every time I book out of this location the cars are never correct like they are at a corporate Hertz. Overall, go to the other companies at the TRI airport vs this one (and Dollar/Thrifty that are also owned by GSP). They will fraudulently charge you for things and then not have the decency to reverse the charge when they realize they were caught. read more

Generally a bit of a crap shoot with Hertz at this location. You never know what quality of car you'll get but the staff is typically friendly. There's often no one to take the drop keys so it feels like a low customer-priority place. They are not equipped for more than 1-2 people in line as evidenced by last visit where I waited about 30 minutes which means, at this airport, that your luggage is pulled off the belt and locked behind the airline booths. If you wait too long in Hertz's line, you then get to stand and wait with the airlines. I'm a loyal Hertz renter but with experiences like this, you have to wonder.... read more

He helped us out on 10/6 (the busy weekend of the StoryTelling festival in Jonesborough) when we had returned a car we rented from a Hertz in FL. He Helped us again when we rented another car to drive to Nashville on 10/8. My only issue is that for a car that should've been $400, 21 days later I have been charged $3400 because -according to corporate- this particular location did not input my return correctly. Therefore I must only give them 2 stars. I am now -$1,200 in the hole and have no idea how I am going to survive until the matter is fixed. : ( read more

My car is in the shop, and has been for almost 2 months. Like a lot of people I can't afford to spend $980 on the car which I did. Then I find out I need a transmission too. So, $1,856 more. So I've been rented from Hertz almost 2 mnths while it's fixed. I was amazed by an agent named Greg he was awesome! I want 2 make sure I got the name right. When u walk in if the other guy is there, the amazing 1 is to ur right! Go to him! I dealt with him the while time, but the last time I went in I had to deal with the other guy and he was awful! A smart mouth, talked over me, an tripled the price! I bought a car I didn't want just so I could turn the rental in the next day! I left in tears the day I had to deal with him, and that's not like me at all! If u go to Hertz here, just deal with Greg, the 1 to ur right when u walk in an u will leave happy. Unlucky 4 me he was out sick, and I had to deal with the mean guy! read more

In fairness to the location, I called the local office directly this past week. The person who answered the phone was courteous and offered to review the service details and get back to me within the day. As promised, I received a return call a few hours later and the issue was resolved. I received a credit soon thereafter. I appreciate the corrective actions that the local office took. I wish I had the name of the person who offered to send me an email receipt as he may be the issue with this location (maybe not an endemic issue). Rented a car from this location and noticed it had a temporary tag on the plate holder. Halfway through my trip, while getting fuel, I noticed tag blew off. So I called the Hertz office and asked to have another tag emailed to me. After 3 days of calling this location (approx. 8-10 phone calls) asking for them to email me and driving a car without a plate I traded this car in at another Hertz location and filled out the incident form. Evidently, that was a mistake because I was charged $1200 for an 'unauthorized drop-off charge' which is complete BS. I asked the lady at the desk to help me understand and she was very defensive and rude. I called and made a reservation for a compact car and told the representative I was using a debit card and wanted to know what the policies were to use it. She told me there would be a $200 deposit hold and nothing else. I said no problem and booked.. When I got to the counter that day I was told I needed to contact my insurance and make sure I had full coverage and I did. Then I'm told there is a $14.99 per day charge for "collision deductable" which hadn't been mentioned when I made the reservation or before I called my insurance company to validate full coverage. It felt like I was getting scammed. I immediately turned the keys back in and said "this feels wrong, I feel like I'm getting taken advantage of" when i found out the compact car was a truck that only gets 23 mpg! I called the 1-800 number and asked to speak to a manager or someone in charge. I got passed on to 3 different operators then connected to the original guy at the counter where I got the car. No one helped and all I was told is "that's their policy" and "next time I should call the counter 1st to get a proper quote". What!!??? Why isn't the person who took my reservation relaying the proper info when I specifically asked what their policies are for debit cards?? Very disappointed in not being told the truth when making a reservation, then being told I should have done more as a customer, and having hidden fees added at the counter .
