Regardless of their low rating, our landscaper guy and new contractor swear by this place. Off we came. Located at the Kingston Plaza in Kingston, NY, we came here for a color stain for raw pine doors we'd purchased at a door store. Herzog's is big- not Home Depot big- but it's got a lot of what you may need for home repairs. They carry lighting equipment, painting items, a kitchen+ bathroom design dep't, textiles, BBQ accessories, vacuum cleaners, gardening supplies, candles, some clothing- heck, even minimalist jewelry in a glass case, etc. My girl with the glasses in the paint department was smooth and patient. She took her time when we asked her questions about colors and how each color stain would react to raw wood. Service was fine, we left with smiles and was the opposite of everything that's been written here in the past. Very poor paint department They were out of Old Masters Satin finish and an employee tried to sell me some thing else I wasn't looking for. He said he would order what I asked for and took my name and number and said it would be there in two days on the next truck. It's been two weeks and I have not received a call. read more

My experiences at this location have not been very good. It does not seem like a particularly motivated team here...not motivated to engage with customers, help customers, sell to customer. They do, however, seem motivated to: 1) Get off the phone with you as quickly as possible. 2) Send you to another department before you even finish what you are asking--or say "no," as quickly as possible, regardless of whether they are correct or not. At least they let you linger because they do sell lots of DIY equipment and materials...but with a "DIY mentality," ie find it yourself. Outdoor service department does all our high end chainsaw repairs. Jimmy is unbelievable and will fix a minor problem while you wait. He is a foundational member of the team in the outdoor service department. I've never been so impressed with customer service, enthusiasm, honesty and product knowledge especially like big saws such as the Husqvarna 395xp. Same attention to detail with consumer saws, making this out 'go to' chainsaw and small engine repair shop. read more

I purchased a chainsaw top handle 194 model when I took it home and tried to start it. It was very hard restart and it was making a screeching noise. I went back to the store and the store manager that' Sold me. The chainsaw took it back and get me another show. I told him I want you to start this chainsaw. I don't want to go home and have the same problem so if you started any makes the same noise I don't want it he told me he probably breaking and if you don't break in. The noise don't stop I'll take it back and see what I can do with it that Man had a stroke. He's in the hospital on his recovery and the new people in her socks. Will not help me. Herzog's always has everything I need--I've acquired carriage bolts, spray paint, a door knob, and several seasonal decorations. Everyone has always been kind and helpful there. I have not yet acquired someone there who I can call Daddy, but that's due to my own shy nature and by no means a representation of the customer base. read more

Unethical and dishonest staff. Purchased wood stain that the manager recommended specifically. $60 per gallon but apparently the BEST!! One week later when I ran out, I went to get more, and was told they have discontinued carrying the product!! This place is why the local business fails! I prefer to support small businesses, but Herzog's has done little to compel me to return. Cashiers have been okay, but overall service has been less than friendly. Staff at the lumber yard even refused to further help a member of my family and walked away in the middle of a question. What's going on, Herzog's? True Value in New Paltz has fantastic service. Re: repair service. Brought my Paslode gun for repair. 4 weeks later they return it. Doesn't work. 120.00 I paid, mind you. I send it back. 3 weeks later it comes back. Doesn't work. No real apology, but Money returned. Figure I'd try DeWalt, as they send it out to different company. Leave my compressor, guy says "maybe next week". Five weeks later I don't even have a phone call. When I call they have no idea, they transfer you around to different parts of store - they have no idea who is responsible for equipment sent out for repair. Losing me money. This is why you give up and go to Lowe's. As far as I"m concerned they have stolen my compressor at this point. read more

This place has a monstrous amount of stuff, for the purpose of tending to you backyard space. I pretty much can't even imagine a store having more related products than this one does. Definitely be sure to come through, if you're trying to hook up your backyard with some cool stuff! read more

He was able to identify the issue I was having with my lawn trimmer, and he was able to make an exchange with zero worry on my part!!! I really appreciated him taking care of me so seamlessly. I looked up the item I needed on the True Value Website, found it and noted the price. I went into the store to purchase and the price was higher then the website. They told me they do not honor the True Value website prices and if I want to purchase the items I would need to pay the "Herzog" price. read more

Not overly impressed. My contractor used them and recommended me to go there for blinds. They quoted me double what I actually ended up paying for custom blinds. My gas fireplace insert came from here and I ended up having some issues with it. It took about 12 weeks to order replacement parts I also found their prices to be higher then most. read more

After having gone through a nightmare with a contractor who was remodeling my kitchen after water damage, I finally found a professional place to design and order my kitchen cabinets. What a pleasure it was dealing with Ewhan who made wonderful suggestions and gave me beautiful design printouts of what the end result would be. He visited twice to be sure of the measurements. I'm so happy that I took his suggestions. My kitchen is beautiful and I've received so many compliments. The cost for everything was surprisingly competitive with the other big box stores and the selections superb! All of the design staff was so pleasant. I really enjoy supporting local businesses and have tried my darnedest to buy here instead of going to the big retail competitors even though the prices are much better there. However, the last two times I have gone to this store the employees at the hardware counter have been stone faced and completely disinterested in helping me, if not straight up rude. I bought some wood and they seems annoyed because I didn't already know the sizes they carried. On Saturday day there was a line (they were having a fall promotion/sale day) and there was no urgency in assisting anyone in the line. One associate seemed annoyed by having to answer a product location question. It doesn't make me want to support the local hardware store when this is how my husband and I get treated. Also, the security guard in the yard has been rude each of the few times I've had to deal with him, how am I supposed to know which one of the almost identical receipts he needs without someone explaining this to me previously? He needs more one lesson on customer service. Sidenote: the people in the paint department have always been VERY nice, as well as the girls up front. read more

Normally I would not take time to write a review. although by happenstance during my online work of today, I noticed reviews of HERZOG and started to read them. Mind you, while all day going back and forth (via email and phone) with Paul, in Kingston store. As a professional in the arena of designing and building outdoor environments (with 37 years experience), my relationship with HERZOG is only a couple of years. Although I have found them to be exceptionally responsive, accommodating, professional and competitive. So much so that I have stopped using business I have worked with for much longer times. Beyond the store in Kingston, I also do business with there paint store in Poughkeepsie. Here again, extremely professional. I have no doubt that some experienced issue and it would be odd to not have that. The big question is how did they handle the issue. Also, did those with issues go to higher ups or simply drop it. I visited Herzogs in Kingston NY to do some research on two items. I wanted to check out a self propelled mower. Which I did, I was surprised at the variety they had, and the service I got was excellent from a youngster who was very busy and even so took the time to help me. Then I went to the back of the store to do some research on some metal fastenings I needed to complete a big project. I asked for help, explained what I wanted for a few minutes, from one of the counter men, who at the time seemed knowledgeable, who grabbed a big book ostensibly I thought to help me. The book was put down and he walked into an office and had a fellow in his wake, who asked me what I needed. So, no communication took place between the two while in the office except to hand me off to this other fellow. I explained what I wanted, again. We walked over to the place where these fasteners are kept. We had little small talk. We looked at some bins there with the huge array of fasteners in them. I asked the fellow what he recommended for the application. His response stopped me, for sure. He said, "I can't offer a recommendation!" "You need an engineer!" Why don't you look at the catalog and pick out what you want? If I had wanted to look at a catalog I have a computer, know how to use it, but wanted badly to get the parts I needed from a well stocked store, with help finding it from the salesperson. I wanted to use a local store for my purchases. Instead, I got some snark, some non advice, and took it upon myself to exit the store, wondering how a fellow can be so unhelpful and still have a job. I returned to my car looked up the part on line on my phone, called their customer service department, connected with their people, asked my questions, got three recommendations and now know what I need to purchase. I always find this place and the people there to be very helpful and they try to be nice too. Try the big box stores and you will have to search for a person in the department and when you do find one, that person is more or less a warm metabolic body not too helpful.This store has people who know and if they don't know, they will offer you good direction and not just point a finger. They have everything to the smallest screw. And again, if they don't have it by chance in the store, they will get it for you, voila! These guys and gals work hard to earn your trust. Take that from someone unrelated, and only a customer. Herzog has become my preferred place for home projects, period, end of story! read more
