Herzog's is big- not Home Depot big- but it's got a lot of what you may need for home repairs. They carry lighting equipment, painting items, a kitchen+ bathroom design dep't, textiles, BBQ accessories, vacuum cleaners, gardening supplies, candles, some clothing- heck, even minimalist jewelry in a glass case, etc. My girl with the glasses in the paint department was smooth and patient. She took her time when we asked her questions about colors and how each color stain would react to raw wood. Service was fine, we left with smiles and was the opposite of everything that's been written here in the past. Whether you're working with a contractor like we are or you're one of those Do-It-Yourselfers, this is your place.

They do, however, seem motivated to: 1) Get off the phone with you as quickly as possible. 2) Send you to another department before you even finish what you are asking--or say "no," as quickly as possible, regardless of whether they are correct or not. At least they let you linger because they do sell lots of DIY equipment and materials...but with a "DIY mentality," ie find it yourself. They have electronics, computers, and miscellaneous mechanical stuff (metal stock, plastic stock, etc) I believe they also deal in scrap metals by the pound, if you happen to have a ton of scrap brass rods or something. There's a cool vibe here where local artists (that, I assume, have used parts from P&T Surplus to create sculpture and other mixed-media art) have pieces on display. They also have a really large section of obsolete computers and parts, which is good if you need to replace an ISA card or some other kind of 10+ year old computer part that nobody seems to sell any more. To me, surplus stores are about picking up obsolete electronics for experimentation and parts, not art, but hey, if that's what keeps this place going, then I'm happy for it. The prices are not marked on a lot of the surplus items, so you have to go ask at the counter. The prices can be a little high, but luckily they are quite nice there, and sometimes you can dicker with them a little. One thing that is a little weird is that a lot of the electronic surplus seems to come from IBM (some of it is still labelled) and I always wonder if they came upon it honestly. I think they probably have some kind of deal to purchase the IBM scrap, but you never know. Anyway, there really are no other options in the area for an electronics junk-hound like me. About 45 minutes to an hour were spent browsing through the incredible old/new - new/old stock (however it's referred to) and we had the pleasure of talking with Dennis, who answered whatever questions I had while gently rebuffing my attempts to buy things that were not for sale. I did however purchase a nice old file in new condition as well as an old, ornate drill bit holder which will proudly be displayed in my home shop. This store has a hazy, relaxed, out-of-time feel to it and is as relaxing and comfortable as any familiar place where one wants to get lost for a while and forget the loud, impersonal modern world in which we find ourselves immersed far too often.

Light House had hand sanitizer by the door and masks on all the employees, but other than those much appreciated concessions to COVID, it felt like a wonderfully normal shopping experience. This place is stocked with all kinds of high-quality home goods. They've got pottery, candles, appliances, textiles, wrapping paper, adorable baby clothes, toys, stuffed animals, cards, cookware, and a million other items my wife wants to buy (even though we probably only need a dozen of them). Her favorite things they have? Hand soap, laundry detergent, and dish soap in giant jugs so you can bring your own refillable containers and purchase by the ounce without destroying our environment. (We both hug trees on a regular basis.) My favorite things they have? A really interesting selection of books, and a comfortable couch I can sit and read on as my wife looks at everything else. This is the Catskills. I've gone through roughly a dozen folks here. They all came recommended. They all were a huge disappointment - some after a few jobs, some after one. I've learned never to pay half up front without references, and I've posted to social media those folks who take half up front and disappear. Sadly, it has happened a couple of times. I relied on them to refer me to a contractor to do a roof repair on my home and they only provided me with two names. I went with Joe Remley- Builder/ Contractor or Ashland, NY and it turned out he was not such a good reference. In fact I had an awful experience. Remley required that I give him a down payment of several thousand dollars to have my roof repaired. I paid Remley the money he wanted and never saw him again. He didn't do any of the work he was supposed to do and has not been responsive to phone calls. Joe Remley is not directly affiliated with Ace Hardware/ Williams Lumber, that I know of, but I relied on Ace Hardware/ Williams Lumber to provide me with a reliable contractor and he wound up ripping me off and scamming me out of thousands of dollars with no work done. This is more of a warning to others to watch out for Joe Remley and to not put so much trust into Williams Lumber for contractor references. Very disappointed.
