I just bought a historical document in a Hess auction. When I called and questioned its authenticity, Mr. Hess got on the phone himself and told me it was "150% authentic." When I asked him on what his confidence was based, he cited an expert in the field who had vouched for it. Little did he imagine I would actually contact the expert! I was just ROBBED by Hess! Bid on and won 8 solid gold pocket watches for a total of over $8000. (I buy gold pocket watches for refining gold only). When I received the watches, I removed the movements right away and shipped the gold cases to my colleague in Los Angeles who went through the process of deep testing each one for their gold content. 7 of the watches were correct as to what Hess had advertised as while one of them had no gold content at all. I immediately contacted Hess and provided them with conclusive photos of the test results. Over the next almost 2 months, I got the runaround even after I sent them the (fake gold case) for them to further inspect. I had informed them that the watch was badly damaged from testing and that I would be willing to pay fair market value for the watch as a "non gold" watch which would be between $80 and $150 at best for a common ultra mass produced 18 size Elgin pocket watch. They decided that because the case was now damaged from the testing, they would use this as an out to straight up rob me, saying they "did not receive the watch back in the condition in which I bought it and would not be offering any partial refund". So, because they advertised the watch as 14k gold, I paid more than $800 for the watch. Can you imagine the audacity, and I just did over 8 grand in business with them! The only problem with this is, it is illegal in the US to misrepresent gold content which is the "bottom line here". They were not willing to accept any responsibility whatsoever for what they did to me but guess what? Mr Jeffrey, You robbed the wrong guy! When the dust settles from this, you will have spent 10 to 20 times what I lost on that watch just in attorneys fees! read more

They maybe knowledge about some things, but their practices after an auction closes are the most unprofessional, non-coordinated that I've ever seen after buying at more than 200 different online auction houses. They may claim to be the most experienced and knowledgeable in tampa bay area but that's totally false and needs to be reported to the FTC for false advertising. Many other online auction houses have better and more professional back-ends. We emailed them a copy of our florida sales tax certificate. they couldn't find it as they don't read the emails in customer service. Gave them copy. Even that wasn't enough, Had to prove we were a corporation and give them another hardcopy of the sales tax certificate. Directions and preparation for picking up the article bought were terrible. Couldn't find item and took some time. Had to reprove that we had paid for it twice. Fortunately we had copy of their paid invoice along with copies of other invoices and correspondence about the item with us. Never buy from them again. Selling personal heirlooms can be very emotionally upsetting for some people and with that stratosphere-high emotion, some people get delusional in their thinking. Jeff and Katrina work with tens of thousands of people and handle abusive people with magnanimous attitudes. Neither one would jeopardize their reputations in any manner. And complaining because they stored your stuff for Months???? Oh my! There is NO auction house that will do that without serious fees OR selling it again. Apparently Hess Fine Art is too helpful for their own good. I personally know hundreds of people that buy and sell with Hess Fine Art, and have done so for decades. I admire the work, the enthusiasm, and personal pride, I've experienced at Hess. I have a Tag Heuer watch that needed repair and although I was in New York at the time, I knew the watch would be in better hands with Jeff and Katrina and their team down in St Pete. They made the necessary repairs and they returned the watch looking brand new in every regard. It's not a very expensive watch, but I really admired that they treated it like it was. I love and respect companies that take great pride in every job even a small one like mine was. AVOID. Was bidding on a rolex on ebay and kindly called for a few more pictures/video of different angles of the watch. The person in charge of putting the watch up for auction was rude and said she would "try" to send them to me. I am bidding on a 10k watch, I need more photos. She NEVER sent them. The item was actually relisted and I called to confirm the date the watch was made. It was listed as 2002 but that specific watch I was bidding on was not made til 2007 and beyond. I was told would get a call back, and yet again NEVER was called back. Seems like lack of knowledge of watches as well as bad customer service.
