First to review?? Seriously? Wow, a bit of pressure. Okay then. I took my son to Hexagon Wake Park/Tucker Lake yesterday to take him wakeboarding. I purchased a groupon pass and had seen the park featured on NC Weekend so I figured it might be worth a day trip. We get there and the guy working the front gate was gracious enough to let us go into the park without paying extra. The area is divided into two sections- the Tucker Lake part and Hexagon Wake Park. We had a blast hanging out in the water and on the assorted diving boards, trampoline, pyramid, etc. at the lake. We then headed over to the building for his lesson. He was given a helmet, life jacket, and a wake board. We met Will who set my son up on the beginner cable. Think of it like a ski resort, with the bunny slope and then the other runs. C did the bunny slope a few times, which consisted of a remote controlled cable that ran back and forth and then moved on to what they refer to as the 2.0 system. Will was super nice, very "yes ma'am" and a generally stoked wakeboarder. From there, you are cued up in a line to get on a cable that you grab either from a seated start or a standing position (again, think ski lift). If you make it off the dock you can take the tow rope/cable around the lake as many times as you'd like. There are ramps for tricks as well. Some of the guys we saw were amazing. They were pulling all kinds of tricks. If you fall you simply swim to a floating dock that is on the perimeter of the lake. I can't attest to how the cables felt, or what it was like to wakeboard on a cable versus a boat, but I can say that the guy working the 2.0 cable system was so encouraging and nice to everyone who was in line. He practiced with them, set up them exactly right on the ramp, and was incredibly positive. Even though my son was never able to do a complete run, he had a great experience and wants to go back. And after that, we went back and did front flips off the dive board. And honestly, isn't that what summer is about? If you're in the area be sure to check it out. We'll definitely be back. read more

I didn't realize how tough wakeboarding was (even for a pretty competent snowboarder), but my brother and I had a great time! I've been back 3 or 4 times since I bought my first groupon in Summer 2013. It was nice that the experts at the place volunteered tips to novices and encouragement after we face planted quite a few times. My word of caution would be that this is extremely rigorous activity. The average dad isn't going to be able to just hop on the cable unless he has had exposure to snowboarding/wakeboarding/skateboarding. If you've never been wakeboarding, don't expect to hop on the cable on your first try. You'll drink plenty of water as your face smacks the water on the first couple launches..... but keep at it! I think I heard the cable's cruising speed is 16 mph, so you're actually launching off the dock at about 25 mph since you're starting out from underneath the cable. So, don't expect to go as slow as you want like you can on a bunny slope. It is a great environment to learn for those up to the challenge! I would suggest going on days that aren't holidays and not during the summer.... another commenter made a valid point that this place can get BUSY and it takes a while to get set up for another run. I'm at the point where I can zip around the lake a few times and I'm just attempting some of the jumps and other features. It's a place I could go time and time again--so much fun! read more

Me and the hubby bought 2 groupons, a 1h + instruction and a 2 hour cable pass. It was super crowded and understaffed. We had tried to call for an appointment ahead of time but they don't take appointments in September because they expected thinner crowds I guess. After waiting over an hour for an instructor to be available, my husband gave up on getting his instruction.. Since the line was 20 minutes long to try and get up on the cable, I tried 3 times, failed to get up and gave up because of frustration with the line. I can get up behind a boat, but they have a ramp they tell the newbies to use, so you have to relearne how to get up because its very different. After we complained about the long waits, they did give us two passes to come back. So that was a plus for them. Ill probably give it another try on a weekday, when the lines are reasonable and I can get more tries at standing up. I would caution against paying for the "instruction". We saw some people go through it while we waited and it looked like 5 minutes of pep talk that isn't worth the extra money. Just tell the cable operator that you're new and he'll give you the same speech for free. read more

My card was overcharged about 3500$ by Hexagon. I was promised a refund but never got it. Although I kept reminding Hexagon about their promise. After having waited for 2 months I asked my bank to help me. The bank started an investigation. When Hexagon found out about it, I was banned from the Hexagon wake park. I didn't break any rules, I didn't insult anyone. I just wanted my money back. read more

My kids LOVE this place. They went to camp at the Hexagon Wake Park for a week last year ... and we decided to let them go two different weeks this summer. Those working at the Wake Park are always super encouraging!! Not only are the employees super kind ... I was amazed at how encouraging and helpful all of the other boarders were too. Yes ... it's tough to get started ... but you should have seen how proud my kids were when they first got up on the boards ... or took their 1st jump. I think the instructors, employees and other patrons were cheering as loudly as I was!! During the camp my kids got to jump on the Tucker Lake trampolines, play on the waterslides, rope swing, paddle board, kayak ... and best of all ... Wake Board. Some say this place is a bit expensive ... but you get to use their equipment. When you look at the cost of paying for instructors, buying life jackets, helmets, boards, boots, a boat, gas, maintenance, boat insurance, boat storage .... and all of the other costs involved in simply taking a boat to the lake ... you'll see that this is actually a deal. This week it wasn't crowded at all. I have an 8 year old girl and a 16 year old boy. This is one of their favorite places!! While hanging out on the docs this week, I saw folks of every age enjoying the Hexagon Wake Park. I watched a grandmother with IMPRESSIVE wakeboarding skills and elementary age kids overcome fears and go on to do the amazing. The skill of some of the folks boarding at this park are unbelievable. I left feeling like I'd watched an edition of the X-Games. The kids had little complaints ... the docks were hot to walk on ... easily fixable by just remembering to wear you flip flops :) The bathrooms were far away ... but that was truly OK too. The bathroom accommodations were still much better than what we have available when we are out boating in the middle of the lake :) When you are out boating ... if you fall ... the boat can swing back around and pick you up. If you fall from the Hexagon, you'll need to swim to one of the docks that border the entire edges of 3 sides of the Hexagon. Still not a big deal. After a day at the Hexagon Wake Park ... my kids were very happy, very proud of their accomplishments, and very exhausted :) I've never seen a lake that has all of the awesome ramps or the unbelievable camaraderie I witnessed on the docks of the Hexagon Wake Park. If you enjoy the water ... and wakeboarding ... you should give this place a try ... even if you have a boat. It's really an unbelievable experience for folks of all ages!! read more
