And I noticed this was next-door so while I was waiting to get my test done, I looked on their website and it said butter brickle ice cream. So naturally, I had to go in. The place was clean and cool, especially considering how hot it was today. The staff was friendly and helpful. And the butter brickle ice cream, was if you're old enough to remember, like the old blue bunny ice cream back in the day. To save myself, future headaches, I only bought two scoops and I did not take any home for my freezer, but I was very tempted to do so. I also bought a double scoop for the gentleman who did my tests next-door. I bought two scoops and I took a lid with me, but it did not last the 45 minute ride home. Easily the best ice cream in Iowa City (in my humble opinion). This place has been a go-to for me since I was a kid and many ice cream shops fail to measure up. The cake batter is a classic, but today I went with blueberry cheesecake. The sweet creamy base is what really makes this ice cream - so any of the 40+ flavors always hit the mark for me. This ice cream is SO rich though, I really can't do more than 1 scoop! The blueberry cheesecake had the right amount of blueberry and the graham cracker throughout added a great additional texture and flavor. Personally I love cheesecake chunks and would love to see those throughout. They also gave us pup cups for our crew at no additional charge. The inside is service dog friendly only, but there are benches outside where we sat with the pups and sent the boys in to order for our crew. There are a limited number of benches outside as well as a few booths inside. Limited parking & seating, and just an overall no frills mom & pop shop vibe for sure at this first ave location but it adds to the charm for me. read more

There's a reason that Heyn's Ice Cream is consistently ranked an Iowa City fan favorite. When we arrived at 8 p.m. on a Thursday night the line was about 20 people deep. Your head will spin trying to select one of their uniquely delicious flavors. I couldn't decide between apple pie, oatmeal cream pie, blueberry cheese, and Kara's creation. Thankfully, I went for two adult scoops and doubled up on the flavor. All for just over $10 my husband and I ate a meal's worth of ice cream-- see the photos of their massive scoops. Heyn's is perfect because they offer both soft serve and hand-scooped ice cream selections (which is a never ending point of contention in our household). Added bonus: we wanted to use a gift certificate but the price of our ice cream didn't exceed the amount on the gift certificate. Instead of telling us that we needed to take ice cream home, the associate crossed out our previous balance and updated it with what remained. While it isn't on my side of town, it is a great location for folks on the Eastside or families with activities at Mercer Park. Staff was friendly. Parking is a non-issue. First time here. This place was highly recommended but was well below my expectation. We ordered two chocolate malts - I love thick malts. Took a while for the person to make them, which is no big deal. When I received the malts, they were runny almost like chocolate milk. I commented "oh these are runny, not thick at all" to which the clerk replied in a snarky tone "malts aren't supposed to be thick!" I responded that they are to be thick. The clerk disappeared into the back and didn't return. I had to have someone else ring me up. After I got to the car, I tasted the malt and it didn't have much flavor and very little malt. We visited Heyn's again and were really impressed this time! The young women working were very efficient and patient. We had a group of eight and one person helped all of us while the other one helped the many people who kept coming in after us- what a popular place! I appreciated being able to sample the flavors since there are some unique ones. I really liked the coffee Oreo ice cream- it was my favorite- and also the cappuccino ice-cream that had chips and toffee bits- I think three of us got that flavor. My husband really enjoyed his Twister and the rest of our group got shakes and were very happy with them. We appreciated being able to use a credit card (I think there are a little lower prices for paying with cash) and also appreciated there were cups for water. Ever since I found out about Heyn's (well into my college years, I wish I would have known sooner!) it's been a regular stop for my friends and I. Is Heyn's the best ice cream I've had in my life? Honestly, probably not. But the atmosphere and overall nostalgia of coming to a place like it is what makes Heyn's special. It's always busy and full of families and the workers are usually friendly too. It just reminds me of places I would go to with my family growing up and it just makes me happy to see other families doing the same. That being said, their ice cream isn't bad and they do have a wide variety of flavors. My favorite, in case you didn't catch my first sentence, is definitely coffee oreo but I'm also partial to banana pudding and blueberry cheesecake as well. Prices are good and the servings are huge. If you're trying to get more than one flavor, I'd suggest getting a kid size. On the east side of town in a lovely strip mall across from a supermarket, happiness abound. Whilst in the parking lots, an ice cream truck came here and picked up both some drums of ice cream as well as a snack for himself. New slogan - "We're were ice cream trucks go for ice cream". Heyn's gets the five star bump for a couple reasons. The flavors are essentially endless and when the fall back is Monster Mash (I think they found out how to bottle both joy and laughter and put it in this!), you seriously can't lose. The folks here are friendly, the serving sizes overly adequate and they range of flavors is rivaled by few. A double scoop runs you about $4, but is totally worth it. Their version of the DQ bilzzar, the "Twister" is plenty excellent as well. My better half enjoys the "Tropical" with Banana, Chocolate and Pecans - very exotic...or not, but Delicious? Yes! Lines are often long, but it's worth the wait for some of the better ice cream in the area. Not a lot of seating inside, but plenty of room outside and really, that's what your after with an ice cream spot. Worth checking out! read more
