Even though the incident occurred at a well-monitored intersection with a 360-degree city camera, police were uncooperative and dismissive. I tried to file a supplemental report and update my case information but was repeatedly misled by staff -- told to come in person only to be handed a phone number to call. When I followed their advice and visited other Miami police stations, they all redirected me back to the central department, which ultimately refused to assist at all. I was never contacted by a detective, and though one internal investigator did call me and take my statement over the phone (promising to email the report), I never heard back. I also attempted to obtain the traffic camera footage, only to discover that neither Miami-Dade County nor FDOT would release it, claiming the cameras are only for real-time monitoring. I received nothing but generic, copy-paste responses. The entire process was disorganized, unaccountable, and handled with arrogance. As I arrived at the downtown station, I even saw a police car illegally parked in the left turn lane -- a fitting symbol for how rules are enforced (or not) in the city. My case may seem small, but how we handle minor incidents says a lot about how the system functions overall. Neglect today encourages escalation tomorrow. Miami deserves better.

I was transferred to FHP where my cell phone could not access the number prompts. This has not been a pleasant experience with calling police for help. Admittedly, I'm not their biggest cheerleader since police departments sometime give the impression of conflicting with the 4th amendment but I'll leave politics out for another time. I was in an accident yesterday while in their jurisdiction and had to call 911. Even though it wasn't catastrophic and we let them know such, an unit arrived within 10 minutes of my call. The officer was courteous in taking the information and respectful to myself and the other party. I was also impressed with their high tech gear. He filled out the report on a laptop, meaning that if I need a copy of the report for my insurance I don't need to take time out to go to the station ; they can send it electronically.

The cameras capture still images and video of red-light running violations with an 80 percent accuracy. The fine for running a red light under the Red Light Safety Program is $125. The notice I read accused the violator of going 80 miles per hour on Biscayne. Frankly, I'm a bit shocked since I seriously doubt that one could accelerate that fast, especially at the time of the ticket. Nevertheless, the cost to the consumer to fight this makes it difficult to do so. To further complicate this issue, in Feb. 2010, a Miami-Dade County Circuit Court judge ruled that red light cameras may not be legally used to issue traffic citations in the state of Florida. The City of Aventura is appealing that decision. I really think too many people run red lights in South Florida. That said, I would like to see a state-wide effort to enforce this infraction. Instead of taking our concern seriously, the officer immediately dismissed us and said there was nothing he could do because it "could be fraud." That response made no sense to us. We weren't asking for anything unreasonable--just assistance in reviewing footage that could help clarify what happened. It felt like our situation wasn't taken seriously at all, and we were brushed off without any real effort to help. As community members, we expect professionalism, respect, and at least an attempt to assist. Unfortunately, this experience felt dismissive and unhelpful. It's frustrating to go to the police for support and leave feeling ignored.

Until my dad was told by SunPass Customer Service that there was another car and driver tagged to his SunPass. Whomever it was (I cannot disclose personal details) was getting their SunPass bills paid by father. SunPass couldn't fix the problem because they do not reimburse onsite. Police reports are mandatory for further investigations, court or whatever else necessary. It was plenty running around to partially resolve the discrepancy.... But this had to be done, because the SunPass System's still considered new. And a fraudulence police report on the situation's considered a legal system thing. So we're confident following the standards, which hopefully would be molded stronger because of situations like this occurrence. However, we really believe that everything should be handled at SunPass. Otherwise, what's the use of the new toll system if it's just going to be a headache... Bring back the toll booths, Toll Booths-toll booths, toll booths...
