Wow what a great roadside cafe, right on historic Route 66-an old motor court is across the street. Route 66 reminders are everywhere--cool. On our stop it seems to attract locals mostly--hey you travelers you are missing out on great food. Recommend strongly the green chili bacon burger. I come from a place that raves about its smash burgers. But pleez Nashvegas step aside for Vega, TX. grilled smash burger with the chiles and cheese combining into perfection--that's worth pulling 1/2 mile off the interstate. We stopped here on the way back from New Mexico. It was very clean throughout. Hubby had a club sandwich and I had a turkey, avocado ciabatta. The ciabatta bread was fresh and soft, so I was very pleased. Both sandwiches were delicious, and worth the drive off of the Interstate. Service was quick, and we were in and out in a half hour. Happened to exit off I-40 for fuel and look for a spot for breakfast. Probably one of the best biscuits and gravy we've ever had. Husband ordered the farmers breakfast and I ordered a 1/2 order of B&G with a side of hash browns. We will look for this exit on our way through again in November! read more

Little place in Vega. Smaller menu than when we visited here before, but that's ok. Do fewer items but do them well! I had a Hickory Wrap, grilled chicken, avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato, Skip the cheese. All wrapped up in a grilled tortilla. Delicious! Came with chips that I'm saving for later. The hubs had a smoked turkey club, which he said was awesome. Traded his chips for sweet potato fries, which were the best either of us have ever had! The service could use a little tweak. They were nice, got the order right, but missed a few minor details. Hubs wanted cream for his coffee, but it never came, could have used napkins and a drink refill. On the road with my hubby & Googled restaurants near the truck stop we were headed to; saw Hickory Inn had 4.5 stars by 130+ people ~ plus we'd get to eat on the historic Route 66! ~ so we bob-tailed over while waiting for our load. Great place to eat on Rt 66 in Texas that is so authentic. Loved the old trucks outside. Definitely a local place. We walked into a noisy room and within 2 seconds you could hear a pin drop. All heads turned as we were not from the area. Had to seat ourselves upfront at the only table available. Service was slow and not very attentive. Food was typical, nothing exceptional. The sandwich rolls were very good and the fried okra was the best I've had in a while. Would I go back.... Maybe, but there must be better places than here. read more

Yes, this is as good as it gets! In fairness and in complete disclosure, I know these folks well and have for a long, long, time as they're family. However, I'm just enough of an Irish cynic to call something lame that's lame...or I'd probably not even waste time on a review. But seriously, you won't ever find a small local restaurant on any road trip anywhere on Earth that has a better chicken fried steak than the Hickory Inn. You just won't, man. Yeah, their burgers are amazing, too. But whatever you order, it's going to be a fine meal because they really go out of their way to find the best ingredients they can get their hands on... no cheap beef from Mexico over-seasoned to hide it's blandness, you're going to get 1% top of the line beef. And it makes a big difference. If you're passing down I-40 headed west out of Amarillo, skip the Midway. Yeah, it's great for taking pictures of the half way point of Route 66, but if you want a darned fine meal, skip it and go to the Hickory Inn. You won't be disappointed! read more
