The plates , but you can clearly see that we cleaned our plates! Very fresh tasting, friendly atmosphere. (The menus could have been wiped clean a bit better) but other than that, we loved it! When you first walk in everything kinda looks quite old in a nostalgic way, and you might even think that it doesn't look clean, but the more we looked around all of the fun novelties that was sitting around were freshly dusted, and even their air-conditioning units were clean, which told us something about the ownership. This restaurant is right off the highway. It isn't well lit so if it's after dark, trust the map! The barbacoa steak was delicious. We always share a meal. Ty's plate was plenty. This place is a MUST! While driving towards East coast we found this Mexican restaurant basically located off the beaten path. It was THE best stop by far! Everything about it was unique. The restaurant used to be a gas station many years ago and they still have original floor with stains from where oil was changed. The owners, two brothers Mike and Ron opened it 8 yeas ago and serve only authentic, home style food. We asked to take some portraits of the owner and he chatted with us a little. They were so hospitable and even gifted us a souvenir, a clay made pot with the Route 66 engravings. SERVICE: Kimberly was our server and was super nice. She helped us with food selection and choice that fitted our taste and was very friendly. We also chatted with the owner for a while and he told us a little about the history of this place, which made the whole experience even more unique and unforgettable! FOOD: chips and salsa they brought was so good! Especially since i am not the biggest fan of mexican food, everything we ordered i ate with huge appetite. Portions are good size, not oversized but just enough to be full. The three of us ordered taco salad and fajitas (for one person) and didnt even finish it was so much food! We ordered food to go-- admittedly a messy affair in the car but we have a deadline. We had the jalapeño poppers, barbacoa nachos, and chicken quesadillas. Recommend all of the above ESPECIALLY those dirty little poppers. We waited inside for our food and the interior is cute as fudge. The staff was friendly and it looks like the building was a service station back when Rt 66 was fully open. There is an old time ambiance that makes you comfortable. It was deep fried so long, the ends had dark brown spots and tasted burnt. I don't know if people come here so hungry from traveling that they think anything is good or if they changed cooks, but it didn't match the reviews I read. HAND MADE CORN TORTILLA!! now tell me where else can you find that? Not in Arizona, not in the Bay Area, I came across that in such a small town. I would recommend this place with no hesitation! Also, finding the type of barbacoa i call barbacoa, is a challenge, since it's just steamed beef in other areas of Mexico, i asked about it because i wasn't sure it was what i think barbacoa is, and I was offered a free sample, I thought I would get a small pinch of meat, but no, i was served a taco :) that was really awesome! Full of gristle, over cooked (I ordered medium, it came out extra well done), and over seasoned (very salty). The price of the steak was not reflected in the quality of the steak. They had a single waitress, taking orders, busing tables and checking people out. She was a lovely young lady, but overwhelmed. The owners should take more pride in what they serve.
