I recently visited Hicks 3/7/2024 for the Flower show and for the special flat of pansies offered to their members. I called and was told yes they had them in stock and was there in 8 minutes as I called from my car phone. When I arrived there were 3 flats left to choose from and I had to settle for that. I asked to speak to the manager only to suggest that would it be possible to limit flats per customer as this happened last year that supplies were sold out and never available again during the advertised sale. Well Pam the manager said she never heard of such a thing to limit quantities on sale items. And she cannot promise when pansies will be restocked as she doesn't grow them. I was only offering a suggestion and this manager was nasty and rude. I have been a customer at Hicks for 30 years and I will NEVER return. I use to go here and feel good after a visit and I was absolutely upset after her remarks to me. And let me tell you...other customers in the store felt the same about this sale that gets you in the store with no items advertised in stock. Pretty sad and Pam you need a course in customer service. read more

I bought a plant from Lowe's recently and the leaves looked a little strange, almost giving signs that the plant was unhealthy. I searched the internet, watched YouTube videos but nothing was helpful. I figured I'd better consult with someone who actually knows about plants. I came across Hicks via google, ended up finding an email address and asked if they had consultation services. I was thinking I'd have to set up an appointment and bring my plant in, which I absolutely wouldn't mind. Pam replied to my email pretty fast, asked for pictures and then gave me the best advice. I am beyond thankful that I came across Hicks and am overly satisfied with the amazing service. Had I known about Hicks before, this is where I would've gotten my plant. I was so upset. Going to Hicks has been an annual holiday trip for my family. When we got there we were all saddened to learn (a) the cafe was closed (?!?) and (b) the reindeer exhibit is gone. The cafe was always a fun break to get a treat and a much needed coffee. While their nursery is fine and dandy for straight up plant needs, don't come for any fun. I'll change it to a 5 star if the pies (fruit of the forest) and cafe come back. read more

I was put in touch with Tom and his team of 2 for landscape design purposes. Keep in mind that there is a $175 consultation fee! The entire consultation took less than 10 minutes. Meanwhile, It took them about 4 weeks to come up with a mediocre design that incorporated NOTHING that I had mentioned I wanted. I emailed Tom back with a design that I had come up with while waiting for his design. But, Tom never even bothered to acknowledge my email. Poor customer service if you ask me. He wanted over $4k for plants that I disliked. Had he taken into account the plants I picked, I would have had him incorporate his ideas into mine, buy plant, and complete install etc. Everyone would have been happy. Usually love this place, not my last visit: 6 registers and only 1 open; 5 customers in line. There were more employees in the store than customers. When I finally get to the ONE person at checkout. He answers the phone. So this ONE guy is the cashier and the receptionist (for lack of better term). I said something, and he came back so defensive it was rude. I like the variety they have. Prices are consistently $3 to $8 more per item I've seen elsewhere, from plants to tools, and lawn maintenance. Drove all the way there to have my soil tested only to be told it wasn't dry enough. Then I wandered around looking for help with ideas of what to plant in my garden. Finally found someone who pushed me towards other areas. She didn't seem interested in helping me. She gave me one suggestion and told me to go ask other people who were hard to find. Not everyone who shops is a gardening expert and that's why they ask for help with what to plant. Very disappointing visit. No soil test and didn't buy any plants to put in my garden, left empty handed. read more

I am a complete novice with planting and gardening which is why I didn't go to Lowe's or Home Depot. My fiance and I were planning on planting an herb garden and tomatoes in our backyard, but did not know where to start. We picked out many plants and then went to talk to anyone who would help. We were incredibly thankful that we randomly asked Felix, the General Manager, to help us in the process of finding only the correct gardening pots. I cannot begin to describe how wonderful Felix made our experience at Hick's today. He stood and talked us through each and every single aspect of our gardening endeavor. Not only did he answer maybe fifty questions with thought and care, but he encouraged us to put back about 4-5 plants we did not need being inexperienced gardeners. We must have spent 45 minutes with him as he guided us throughout the store picking the correct items for each request we had. I had a couple of final questions about another plant I needed to get for my small business which teaches science to children, and since he didn't completely know the answers to his liking, he selflessly referred us to Laura who was the leader of the indoor section of the store. She as well answered many of my questions with thought and care to get me exactly what I needed. My experience at Hick's was overly fantastic and it is due in main part to Felix. I will be coming back exclusively to this gardening center if not only to speak with Felix. He is an extremely nice, knowledgeable, and caring General Manager and it seems like he trains his staff in the same manner from my conversation with Laura. Hicks is one of the top nurseries of the island. They have everything you might need for your house, inside and especially outside. My only gripe is the prices on most of their items. For Christmas there is no better place to go. They have a whole walk through of life size diaramas of holiday scenes. They also have a restaurant inside with hot chocolate and, better than expected, pot pies. There's also a delightful brass quartet playing live holiday songs in the Atrium. To top it off, they have a Santa for the kids that is done really well amd is organized well. Exceptional store, only high on prices. read more

Salesperson tried to rip me off on delivery charge for outdoor dining set. Was told delivery charge was $120 plus tax (even though other places charged only $80 to $85 like Peter Andrews). When I got home, it turns out I was charged $190 plus tax. I had to call 3X and speak to 3 different people to get refund of $75 difference. No admission of wrong doing, no apology. So we heard so much about Hicks Nursery for years and when we moved to the neighborhood we tried them to landscape our new house. It was we blank canvas as we had removed what was previously there. Ken was our designer and he was wonderful! He worked with our busy schedule and was flexible. He designed the space and came to the house to present it to us. He gave us several options of how to implement it as we wanted to do it in stages and he really listened to exactly what we wanted. He presented the design to us and accompanied the design with a packet of photos of what each plant looked like in bloom so that we could envision the final product. This was very important to us because we found it hard to envision how it would look. He explained the reasoning behind the choice of each plant. He designed the space so it would have some color for most of the year honoring our request for as much color as possible. They completed everything we wanted in one day. He followed up to make sure we were pleased and had been satisfied. We look forward to implementing the next stage in the Spring. We are thrilled with the results so far. It will need to grow in of course (that was part of the design) and we will see the full product over the seasons as well. We are charmed by our new garden and can't wait to see the changes as it grows! read more

Good prices throughout I thought. Staff was helpful with us being rookie gardeners but my goodness it is a sauna in there. I know there's nothing that can be done but my goodness gracious. How anyone can work here is behind me. I was in there 45 minutes and it killed me the rest of the evening I felt like I ran the marathon I was so beat up from the heat in this place. There's no air in there in those indoor greenhouses. I just can't take it. Next year I'm getting my stuff on a cool day. Other than that I like it there. When the work commenced the team was on time, friendly, and extremely professional. My husband and I had a great experience with Hicks Nursery and Hicks Landscape Design as well as the Nursery staff, planters, gardeners, and General Manager-William Winiecki. My husband and I initially chose the trees from Hicks that we wanted to have line our fence in our backyard and on the sides of our home. Mr. Winiecki reviewed our order and later came to our home to assess the job himself and made several suggestions that he felt would work best for the design we were seeking, including assisting us in changing the trees that we chose ourselves and switching to trees that better suited for the project we envisioned. Mr. Winiecki and Hicks timely delivered and planted the new trees that we purchased and in order to make the design really work, Hicks moved and re-planted some existing trees that they previously planted for us last season. The time that Mr. Winiecki took to come to our home was unexpected (as he is the General Manager) but it really made a big impression on us. That gesture gave us a great deal of confidence in our purchase as well as confidence in the job itself. Mr. Winiecki's suggestions and design ideas for our project worked out well and our backyard is now the oasis we were seeking. Mr. Winiecki oversaw the outcome of the work and assured us that Hicks stands by its work and warranties. We had been to Hicks before, and always happy with the staff and our purchases, but decided to do a little more extensive landscaping this year. From the start, William came out to check out our site. He had been to my house the year prior and although no there for our trees previously planted 3 years ago, he noticed one was not doing well. He immediately said that he would need to replace this tree at Hicks expense. Beyond, nice! As to our current project which we kept altering, the staff (Nelson's crew) was amazing. I have not seen people work like this in a long time! Polite, efficient, patient, meticulous and hard working. Otto the ghost! I have been celebrating fall at Hicks Nurseries every year since I was a child. I carried on the tradition with my own children and this year I was fortunate to have my my 26 year old daughter join me after many years apart. It just never gets old! When she was at college I would come here by myself and buy her a tiny Otto the Ghost doll just to remind her of home and how much I loved her. The magic is still here!
