The same can be said for the room; we had the John Calvin room. Liz, the owner, is excellent at making you feel welcomed from the moment you arrive. She provides recommendations for the area and her recommendation for "Crazy Horse" for dinner did not disappoint! It is a quiet setting, and a great place to get away. The only caveat is if you are on the first floor and there are people above you in a room, you will likely hear every time they walk. The floors, adding to the character, creak easily. Breakfast, was very good. We had a southwest frittata, fruit and a pumpkin donut (October). Coffee is ready before 8am. I love that it is Christian themed and the rooms are named for Christian Theologians. If you're looking for a quaint, special getaway, give Cottonwood Inn a go! Liz will take good care of you!

Although this was a little farther from downtown than we're used to from previous years, having a B&B be slightly out of town wasn't exactly a bad thing since we're truly removed from all the busyness of the downtown area. Liz was such a lovely lady who can cook a mean breakfast. My husband isn't the biggest fan of a quiche, but he even he ate the whole giant slice. Although our room wasn't the biggest, it was still very cozy and quaint, especially with the blue and white decor. Although the bathroom wasn't en suite, it was about 10 steps away and we didn't have to share. I loved having the natural lighting from the skylight in the bathroom. There was a reading area, a sun room, and other parts of the house we didn't even check out because we were so busy enjoying the town. Because of the location, you can't beat the price. We were slightly concerned when we decided to stay at the Valentine Lodge. We read several reviews…read morethat were not good at all. It's hard to say with anything regarding on-line reviews though because for every negative review you will undoubtedly find a couple positive reviews. After searching online for hotels and then B&Bs in the Saugatuck/Douglas area we were nearly scared off by the high costs of other chains and B&Bs. Then we found the Valentine Lodge. We almost couldn't believe the listed cost because of the comparables. We booked the room online and then called and spoke with the owner. From the start they were very nice people and assisted with our questions. If you are looking for the Ritz, Raddison or some other other high end chic hotel, this is not it! Go ahead stay at one of those and pay quadruple the cost for a room. If you are looking for a decent room, friendly staff and a place close to town this is a great bet for you. We arrived on a Friday afternoon to stay through Sunday and couldn't help be impressed by the size of the house. Think old world charm of a southern style mansion with a beautiful front porch on the first and second floor facing the street. The grounds were immense and well kept. We met the owner and she graciously explained their rooms, policies and assisted with the area. As we made our way up the grand staircase we were a bit awestruck buy the decor and size of the home. Yes there are a lot of paintings as she is an artist. I thought they were pretty and added to the charm of the place. We found our room on the third floor and got a bit settled in. My ONE complaint of the room was the hard bed. It didn't bother me a ton but my girlfriend wasn't thrilled. The bathroom was clean, the bedroom was clean and the decor was dated but fine. Again if you're going to pick a bed and breakfast apart for older decor you should probably be staying at a high end hotel. We enjoyed the free wifi and charm of the place. We were out late and had no problems getting in and heading to bed. The next morning we headed down for the breakfast. Everything was clean and well prepared. It looked like it may have been a family affair with everyone pitching in. The egg dish was not marked with it's ingredients, (as one reviewer lamented) I didn't care, it was delicious! There was fresh fruit, hash browns, an egg scramble, juice, water and appropriate condiments. They provide trays if you wish to eat outside on the front or back porch or even on the second floor enclosed porch. We opted for the second floor. Upon return to the kitchen area they were cleaning and making sure the guests were taken care of. From the moment we checked in until we left on Sunday the owner was friendly and helpful. It's obvious that her and some of her family live in the home because they are at your beck and call for all intensive purposes. We had a great experience at the Valentine Lodge bed and breakfast and would definitely suggest it to others. Again if B&B's aren't your thing and you expect high class amenities go to a high end place. We would definitely stay here again.

On walking up to the place, it looked very cozy, warm, and inviting. The couple who own the B&B are super nice, very helpful, and just adorable. We stayed in the Valentina Room, which is on the second floor, first door on the left. It was actually bigger than I expected and had a large king size bed. We were very comfortable there. The house itself is charming, and the walls are decorated with oil paintings done by one of the family members. There are two very large decks - one in front of the house on the ground floor and the other is a large screened in porch in the front of the house on the second floor. We used both during our stay using the main floor one to eat breakfast and the second floor one to relax, drink tea, and read books/magazines before bed. This B&B is located in Douglas, which is just a short five minute drive from downtown Saugatuck. I was glad to be a little out of town, as it was always peaceful and quiet at Valentine Lodge. There was free wi fi (we never used it), wine glasses, a corkscrew, a mini fridge, and a mini coffee pot in our room, on demand tea on the porch, and board games and books to use throughout the house. Oh, and the breakfasts were just delicious. On Sunday morning, there was toast, yogurt, three kinds of quiche, blueberry cake, fruit salad, and of course coffee and orange juice. On Monday morning, we were the only guests at the B&B and we were asked what time we wanted breakfast and were told she would make it for us whenever we wanted. That breakfast was lovely too and consisted of bagels, toast, scrambled eggs, fruit salad, yogurt, coffee, and orange juice. It was ready the moment we walked down the stairs. I highly recommend this wonderful B&B. It would be a shame to miss it.

Breakfast is a five star gourmet experience, excellent food, ample portions. The owners are great people , very friendly and courteous. Josh and I stayed in the beautiful Lake Placid room. Our friends stayed in the spectacular St. Moritz room. Our hosts were so gracious and accommodating (my friend and I both have Celiac Disease and Judine worked with us to keep our food safe for us - I brought most of my meals). Traveling can be difficult with food sensitivities but it was so comfortable staying there. We had never seen the town in South Haven before and we can't wait to make plans for another visit! There is still so much we need to see and of course so much more to do when the weather warms up!

I stayed here over memorial day weekend 2025, and though I was a bit late for Holland's famous Tulip Time, there were still a few tulips sprinkled around the property. This place was like a big gorgeous house, which makes sense for a bed and breakfast. It was my first time staying at a bed and breakfast, and I'd recommend this experience entirely and would like to stay again if I have the chance. There's a couple spacious sitting areas that encourage mingling with other guests but you also have some privacy if you prefer to keep to yourself. The owners are a family, with main ownership from a mother and son, and it feels like there is a great sense of pride with ownership and operation of the inn. They help the space like you're staying with extended family in a way. There are maybe 7-8 different rooms on the property of different sizes. I believe they have a couple larger rooms in a guest house that's just across from the house main entrance. My partner and I had a smaller room in the main house called "The Audrey"with one queen bed on the second floor. It was just the right amount of space for the two of us. The rooms are seemingly spaced out enough so that you only hear others when they pass by your door. All the doors have a lock with a key. Each room has a bathroom attached to it that comes with towels and shampoo/conditioner in pump bottles in the shower. Our room also had a nicely sized TV, where we watched the Indy 500 (this is ironic considering that we were visiting from Indy!) For a bed and breakfast, you have access to some foodstuffs throughout the entire day. They have large fridges that have jams, meats, cheeses, and breads that are kept up to stock throughout the day, so the owners said that folks will often have lunch at the inn. They also have fruit, yogurt, and homemade granola. Coffee and tea can be readily made throughout the day as well. Overall, the inn common areas are kept very clean. Like I said before, I would absolutely jump at the chance to stay here again, especially during Tulip Time. You are just steps away from a beautiful park and a couple blocks away from restaurants on one of the main avenues. I hope that the next time I make my way up to Holland, a room will be available for Tulip Time. I'd even book it years in advance if I had to. Disclaimer: some of the hallways are a little narrow, but that's just part of the older house experience. This location also pretty much requires the use of some steps to move about. I would not consider this inn to be disability friendly, but that's also just older building experience. This is a truly neutral point from me that does not impact the status of this review.

So I was very pleased to find this inn in Fennville, just next to the Saugatuck-Douglas resort area. The inn is very nice, beautiful grounds adjacent to prairie and fields, and the rooms are quite comfortable. Mine was a shared bath and the bath available was very well-appointed. There is a coffee station upstairs for making single cups of gourmet coffee. And a porch upstairs for relaxing and sunning. The breakfast is served not in the dining room but in an enclosed sun porch.. The food was excellent and the hostess very pleasant. She does own dogs, small dogs that have to kept from the stairs by a doggie fence so guests must negotiate the doggie fence. However, upon sitting down to breakfast, the hostess introduced me to the capsules she had placed at my setting. They were some sort of fruit and vegetable powder or concentrate and she extolled their virtues and invited me to try them at no cost of course. I am not a believer in replacements or artificial products like margarine or weight-reducing shakes or pills, so i thought nothing of it. She explained that they are actually better than real veggies and fruit and claimed that they had the classic curative powers of other type products. She gave me a small supply and wanted to know if she could call me in 30 days to follow up on my progress with them. I was not interested, but I felt her disappointment. She has a small "store" at the reception desk with Eastern medicine products and items to accompany her Reiki services. I wasn't about to sign up for one of those after the nutritional product solicitation. Frankly I think it is inappropriate to be hocking such products at a B&B without asking guests in advance. I have since had need of a pet-friendly inn in that area but will not return for that reason. Otherwise, I thought her establishment was first-rate - it's just unfortunate that she cannot separate her money-making interests.
