We stayed at the Maplewood Hotel for our son's wedding weekend and had an incredible experience. Our whole extended family was there--grandparents, kids, even our 9 month granddaughter--and everything was top notch. Clarissa was amazing! She managed our ever-changing reservations over the course of a year (seriously, a million changes) and took care of us so kindly throughout our stay. We also had the chance to meet the owner, Katherine, and truly appreciated her interest in our family and the wedding. The hotel is beautiful, the breakfasts were delicious, and the location couldn't be better--right in the heart of downtown Saugatuck. We could walk to shops, restaurants, and everything else the town has to offer. We had a wonderful time and would absolutely stay here again! read more

Lovely boutique hotel right in the heart or Saugatuck. Our room was comfortable and quiet, and the breakfast each morning was superb, French toast one morning and eggs Benedict the other. We would recommend this establishment and would stay there again next time we are in the area. read more

I have never stayed in a bed-and-breakfast before... Maplewood Hotel was such a lovely experience!! Located in the heart of downtown walking distance to all the lovely shops and restaurants! It was such a bonus. All the rooms are uniquely designed with the old-fashioned decor, If walls could talk in this lovely hotel! The place smelled amazing, there was beautiful music playing to just put you at a place of comfort and peace! You truly want to sit in one of the special rooms throughout the hotel.. all decorated so cozy with lovely antiques! Our room was so comfortable and roomy! The staff was amazingly kind, very attentive, yet never both some. The first morning we were at breakfast in the darling sunroom with tables, Catherine, the owner came by to talk to each guest. She was lovely and you can tell she just adores her business and the people staying there. The breakfast was absolutely delicious!!! Homemade fresh blueberry pancakes with fresh bananas, fresh fruit and yogurt and homemade bread. The next morning was a beautiful toasted croissant with the egg Benedict thick, applewood, bacon, and fresh spinach. It was such a treat. Absolutely delicious!!! included in your stay. So wonderful to talk to people staying there finding out where they're from & their life story I will never forget the experience! There's a store directly across the street, a lovely yoga studio & a company that rents paddle boards and kayaks! Such a peaceful serene experience to paddle on a beautiful calm lake..surrounded by beautiful homes and the most loveliest trees I've ever seen. It was such an experience and beautiful weekend. I've been to Saugatuck three times and Maple Hotel is my absolute favorite now!!...I will definitely stay here from now on. If you're visiting Saugatuck, this is definitely the place to stay at! It's surrounded by the downtown shopping and restaurant area so very walkable. I came during the off-season during a snowstorm and enjoyed curling up in front of my room's fireplace but can also see how great it would be to also stay here in the warmer months to enjoy a livelier atmosphere. Bonus points for the huge bathtub, and also meeting Catherine, the owner. She was a really sweet host and made me feel very welcome in her beautiful hotel. read more

You can expect a vintage room/bathroom, that goes with the charm of these old homes. BUT, the breakfast here was a joke. The "Avocado Toast" was ridiculous. First, the bread was not toasted (or barely). The avocado came straight from the refrigerated section of 7-eleven ... it had that awful taste you know when it is not made fresh. The spinach was raw, which might have been ok if you had some egg yolk, but the eggs were cold and cooked yolk hard. They just mailed it in on this, no effort. AND, to start they serve some fresh fruit (OK) with a plastic cup of yoplait yogurt ... wow! read more

At $340 per night on a weekday for a "suite" (just a king size bed with a whirlpool tub), I think it's reasonable to expect clean bedsheets and bath towels free of old stains and South facing windows to have blackout curtains, or any curtains for that matter. Or at least clean windows without dirt on sills. And an AC that's actually capable of cooling down the room, not just making noise, or a ceiling fan that you can actually operate as a fan independently from the light. Bathroom amenities are pitiful: limited worn out towels, one tiny shampoo bottle and no conditioner - ugh. A decent location and friendly staff but the overall impression of the historic hotel property is not good, run down and at times just plain gross and filthy (badly stained carpet and dirty tiles). This hotel is in dire need of new blood, better management and updates worthy of its history and modern needs; otherwise, this is nothing more than a $65 per night motel pretending to be something else and milking its legacy. Lovely experience at the Maplewood. The hotel has the romance of centuries past along with modern amenities. The common areas of the hotel are perfect for hanging out as your party gathers before going out. Breakfast was great. Check-in and check-out were super easy. Such an Amazing treasure. Everything about our stay was top notched! It was like a home away from away, but peaceful. The service is top notched and we felt like Royalty. Katherine and her team provided concierge like service and took care of our every need. There was such a camaraderie within the house amongst all the guest which was fostered by the staff. My room was nicely decorated and surprisingly quiet. A great location and a wealth of resources from the staff and owner made our first visit to Saugatuck a memorable experience. A historic and beautifully updated and renovated downtown hotel. The location puts you close (but not too close) to downtown nightlife, as well as to shops and the waterfront. Lovely rooms and common areas. The breakfast room and adjacent screened porch is a treat. Not a "cookie-cutter" hotel in any way. A memorable stay. Very friendly people, with the owner on hand. I recommend you try it, especially if you're bored with ordinary hotels and want something a bit nicer than most bed and breakfast places. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. The staff is super shady. My parents made a reservation and were unable to use the weekend. They tried to cancel but couldn't due to the cancellation policy. That's fair- so my mom and dad told my husband and I to use the room. They called the hotel and told them we would use it. They front desk staff confirmed that this was fine. We arrived and they had sold the room!! Not only were they collecting my parents money, but they re-rented the room! They scrambled and called the manager and after a while were able to put my husband and I up in the last room left, which was supposedly an "upgrade." This "great" room didn't even have a bathroom door. Seriously? We only ended up staying because this place was so weird. My parents disputed the credit card charge (since this place gave away their room)- and the hotel is fighting it! So ridiculous. Don't stay here. Spend your dollars elsewhere. My husband and I travel frequently. This is by far the worst hotel treatment we have ever received. We will NOT recommend this to any of our friends. read more

I had a Groupon so I did not pay full price. I paid 250 for two nights on a suite ... good deal! without the groupon not sure I would have gone there. The room was nice and large. Very clean and updated. Breakfast is included but its not a B&B ... We ate there and we ended going to a local breakfast place: Ida's cottage house?! its on Butler street, very good. The good thing about the hotel is the location, close to everything yet quiet to relax. So if you are willing to pay 180 bucks per night for a nice room and location then this is the place for you ... They do have WIFI but its very slow ... read more

Great for a weekend getaway! Came here from the Chicagoland area with my girlfriend to celebrate our two year anniversary. The staff and owner were very nice and accommodating, and the room and hotel were very clean. There was also free coffee and breakfast in the mornings, and a free wine tasting coupon for a nearby winery. Speaking of things nearby, the entire main downtown area of Saugatuk is within walking distance. Would definitely recommend this place to others who like the bed and breakfast scene and are looking to spend a relaxing weekend away from the city. read more

If you don't mind an extremely stuffy, musty room, an old water stain on the ceiling above your bed, mold in the shower, broken window coverings, or people walking around loudly all night, this is the place for you! On the upside, the location was perfect and the staff was very pleasant. read more

I would give zero stars if possible. The overall B&B was nice and a good location in town. Additionally the staff was nice enough. It was the owner who was completely and utterly disrespectful and rude right off the bat. Considering a rate of $300/night we should have at least been greeted in a kind manner and asked how our stay was at the end. I called ahead and requested an early check in since we drove all the way from NC with our 2 month old daughter. When we arrived with our arms full of diaper bags, our stroller, and luggage, the owner came to the door before letting us in scolding us that check in is at 4pm. She questioned me when I told her I was promised an early check in and didn't even help us in the door. She was complaining about a broken pipe and began yelling at her staff member. On another occasion she yelled at my husband about our stroller completely inconsiderate of the fact that our daughter was napping. We were treated so poorly during our stay that I cannot recommend this place to anyone. Terrible experience. read more

Fantastically, quaint bed and breakfast experience. Even on this off weekend in Saugatuck, the gorgeous weather and attentive staff made this a wonderful time. We were greeted by a wonderful woman who provided us with a quick run down of the hotel and offered us a room. Immediately we were moved by the hospitality and care from her. While wifi is not the best here it does work and I would argue that there's something to be said about a weekend escape where we can unplug. We spent our night out on the town and by the fire before finishing up in the room with some DVD's from the DVD library downstairs. We received a nicely done, hot breakfast including some tasty, quiche and banana bread before heading back home to Chicago. I would recommend Maplewood Hotel for anyone as it's a great time to unplug and get away. read more

The best place in Saugatuck we've found. We love the old place and found everything comfortable. We were cautious about staying after reading some reviews but found them WRONG! Place is comfortable, even if some of the rooms (like ours) is small. Food was great, lemonade and ice water were wonderful, dish of nuts, etc, etc. The breakfast was excellent and all the seating areas were great. At 90 degrees outside, it was comfortable indoors. We'll love to come back in Autumn. read more

Stayed 3 nights at the Maplewood hotel over Labor Day weekend. The hotel itself is lovely and very clean. However, when it's 88 degrees out, I find it a bit odd that they do not air condition their common areas at all, with the exception of the restaurant. The room was quite small, allowing you to walk around a queen size bed. Although to be honest, we're not sure that it actually was a queen size bed. The sink is in the room, and the toilets and very tiny shower stall were in the bathroom. In the mornings they offer coffee, fruits, yogurt, and cereal. It wasn't anything that we wanted, so we went out for breakfast every day. The best part about the hotel is that it is within walking distance to everything. It's right on the edge of all of the shopping, so parking seem was easy. read more

However, this hotel backs up to the local post office where a daily 4am and 6am delivery involve people yelling at the top of their lungs, banging/dropping and a full throttle disrespect for guests sleeping. The best feature of the Hotel is Location! The hotel is extremely clean and well appointed. Staff was polite and helpful, the owner even stopped by our table when she saw us at a restaurant in town one night to say hello. We had the mid size room and I'd hate to see a small room. The room had a king bed and 2 chairs and a small round table, the bathroom was cramped. Our room was in the rear of the hotel (2nd floor) and right next to the central air conditioning unit and was very cool enough, enough so we had to get an extra blanket. It was extremely hot weekend, so not such a bad thing. Guess that's better then having bad a/c and too warm. The pool/patio area is small but very pleasant, we spent our first evening in the Gazebo reading and having wine and cheese. Second day after shopping and looking around we went for a quick dip in the pool. Again area is small and if it had been busy - could have been a problem. I'm only giving it 4 stars because of the price ... at $280+taxes a night for the size of the room..ouch! But maybe I'm out touch on costs during high season at a resort town. read more

My friends and I just spent our second girls' getaway here at the Maplewood. We've been doing this for 25 years but only discovered the Maplewood last summer. If you want cookie cutter rooms and uncaring staff, go elsewhere. When you deal with a historical building, you may have issues. But our rooms were bright and cheerful. We have the option of picking our rooms if they are available. This time the room we requested was being renovated so we got a different room. I volunteered to sleep on the pullout bed. Not a problem I thought. The be was not comfortable. One of my friend mentioned it (She did not complain) to the staff. She called the owner who comped me a different room for our second night. I did not expect that. Breakfast is great, with the cutest little server who also functions as bellhop. Cookies in the afternoon--yum. We love being close enough to walk everywhere. On friend had health issues. We can walk where possible but if she is having difficulties, we hop in the car. I can even take her, drop her off and come back and park by the hotel. I would not call this a bed and breakfast; I'd call it a boutique hotel. We are already making plans for next year. read more

We were visiting Saugatuck for a surprise birthday and it was very busy and no parking was available. My elderly mother and I had to park 4 blocks away and she has walks with a cane. Along the way she need to use the restroom and the only places near by were a store and the Maplewood Hotel. We went in and asked if we could use the restroom even though we were not staying at the hotel and they were happy to show us to the restroom. It was a very kind and gracious gesture and will not be forgotten. The next time I head to Saugatuck I will be staying at the Maplewood - their guests must feel like royalty when they are so generous to folks stopping in to ask for assistance. We like this hotel-- it is quaint, historic, and tasteful. It doesn't feel like one is staying at a hotel but rather a favorite relative's house. The staff is very friendly, lovely and accommodating. Breakfast was very good, flavorful and fresh. The rooms are charming and eclectic; decidedly not modern and furnished with antiques and original artworks. Since we don't mind old and actually prefer them, I thought this would the place to point out that even though things are old, a few of the items still need to function properly. In our room, it's time for some new mattresses and box springs, a freshening up of the paint, replacing broken window locks, cleaning out overflowing gutters that send down a waterfall to land on top of the air conditioner which in turn sounds like an army is marching past your window all night long. Attention to detail in a few strategic areas would be well worth doing and greatly improve the guest experience. The hotel has so much going for it in terms of location, setting, and staff. Our room was just a little tired and needs a shot of freshness. We peeked into some other open rooms and they didn't seem to have the same issues, so maybe our room was next in line for maintenance and hadn't received it yet. Overall, this is a wonderful and quaint old hotel and we will definitely stay here again. read more
