They are refusing to fix it. 5 maintenance requests + many phone calls to get it taken care of. They pretend to address it, with no results. Imagine waking up every day in 50 degrees. I honestly feel bad for my cat more than anything. Fast forward to Summer time (thank god no more cold nights !!). My A/C does not work, who would've guessed ... I've been asking for an ADDITIONAL 2 months now for this to be addressed. I get calls and emails saying it will be looked at, but no result yet again. Work orders get opened by me, and closed by them with no resolution - it's like a game to them. I have been living in a 85 degree home for nearly 2 months now. Maintenance finally entered my apartment yesterday and at least acknowledged the issue with a note "returning tomorrow to fix". Thank you for the acknowledgement 2 months later ! Tomorrow comes and goes, nothing was fixed. It looks like they re-entered my apartment and installed a cute little window unit - thanks for the effort. No response from my several emails sent out yesterday or today. No note from maintenance with an update. Just a little window unit that does not keep up whatsoever, meanwhile the emergency maintenance phone line says "sorry we're closed until July 6th Monday". It is July 2nd Thursday ... I have been trying to fix this for 2 MONTHS and cannot even speak with anyone to get an update for an additional 4 days. It is currently 90 degrees and climbing in my apartment. STAY AWAY. If I get a hotel, will they reimburse me ?? Absolutely not, don't even bother trying. These people have no remorse. I've paid on time for YEARS, and fix all little issues BY MYSELF just to not inconvenience or bother anyone (there's a lot of those little issues unfortunately, since they don't really recondition their apartments well). What is the reason for this treatment ?? I truly don't understand. Meanwhile my A/C (or heat in the winter) has been running and running trying to keep up, but never does. My electric bill has been astronomical because of this for the last few months. I am tired of being ignored. Keep in mind, this is my second experience with unlivable conditions with this company. I was already transferred out of my old unit and into this one, just to battle another ongoing issue in the new unit. I hate to point fingers, but Holly - you are a terrible manager. Good luck during the winter- heating expenses are outrageous and it takes days to clear the walkways and even longer to clear the parking lots. Garbage dumpsters are always overflowing with trash. They don't do any work to maintain the place; maintenance takes forever to fix serious problems. the office is always closed. always problems with rent paying portal. DO NOT MOVE HERE. I've been a resident for two years and when I first came to see the apartment I was bamboozled (because I cannot think of any other word) by the woman who showed us around. The apartments were built in the 70s so the exterior isn't modern looking but the apartments are super spacious, some units even came with a fireplace and you can literally get a place that is over 1500 sq ft for less than 1800/month (in 2020). Looks wise the place is nice and that I can't deny that but everything else about this apartment and the company that owns them sucks. The first day we moved into our apt the floors were absolute filthy, the toilet chain in one of the bathrooms was broken and it wouldn't flush, the second bathrooms toilet seat was that of the precious tenant, four of our window screens were missing, the tile floors in the kitchen were severely cracked, our microwave stopped working after a few days, the doorbell did not and STILL does not work, the dishwasher smelled of months old mold ", the utility closet leaked and still leaks constantly and both of the sinks had severe clogs. The ONLY thing they did was paint the walls and cover all the holes and paint the patio floor with paint that isn't meant for outdoors because it chips to this day. After a month we got most of the issues fixed and I received an apology stating "this isn't normally how we do things, blah blah". It was BS. The maintenance here sucks because they take their time to come fix things, for our unit each year we've had to call them during the summer because our AC doesn't work, the gym here has outdated machines and there is a constant smell of mold in the unit. My fridge worked for about 4 months and it broke down 4 times before they decided to replace it, lost a lot of money. We are planning to move out soon. Avoid this place at all costs... yes, the units LOOK very nice but overall this place is terrible and I wish I had looked into it more before moving in. read more

You can never count on speaking to anyone in the leasing office; they routinely arrive an hour late, take two-hour lunches, leave an hour early, and take half-days on Fridays. The property is poorly managed. The water heater in the apartment above me burst, flooded my apartment, and damaged my furniture. A part on my toilet broke, flooded the apartment, and damaged my belongings. They've been in my apartment a dozen times to fix the air/heating unit because it leaks down into the storage - my belongings in storage were destroyed. After-hours maintenance is also unreliable. One winter when my heat was not working I couldn't get a response for three days. I had to pay hotel bills while I waited for it to be fixed. Their communication is inconsistent, incorrect, and incoherent. Sometimes important messages are posted on the outside of the door for the building, other times notes are posted on the inside of the door, and other times notices are left by each tenant's door. They list repair dates and then change them with little notice. Their snow removal notice is laughable. They are asking tenants to move cars to the complex thruways, once they are cleared so that the parking lots can then be cleared. This plan will block emergency workers from getting by, and how can you drive out of the parking lot before it is plowed? The grounds are a mess. The recycling and regular garbage carts are constantly overflowing. The complex needs to add additional collections, instead, they periodically send out notes claiming people are illegally using their carts or that it's a temporary problem caused by people moving out. I've been forced to keep my garbage in the apartment because there was nowhere to dispose of it. They address dog poop, cigarette butts, and garbage on the grounds by posting notes telling people to stop. That does nothing. The expenses are obscene. 5% of your rent is charged if your rent is late (trust me, many people have unexpected health issues or family emergencies that lead to late rent). You need to give three, not two months' notice if you do not plan to renew your lease. Rent is increased by 5% every year and you are charged 250 each year for maintenance and the limited amenities (even though your lease states you will pay less in subsequent years); this includes a 250 fee during the pandemic when few services existed. I am staying to finish health treatments with nearby doctors and hospitals, and because I am too sick to seek new housing and move. Once I am better I will move. Don't make the mistake I made. I went there to inquire about a one bedroom apartment. From the outside, this place looked nice and very convenient but the experience was horrible. Jackie, from the leasing office had terrible customer service. She asked us if we had any more questions with her back turned to us while walking away and once we said "not at the moment," she kept walking away. The apartment isn't as pleasant for the price range they charge. There are better options. What I found unattractive was the additional $ 375 fee required for all tenants to cover for amenities and for snow clean up and maintenance. read more

PLEASE DO NOT LIVE HERE. I had the misfortune of having to live in this community for a year. It was the most unforgettable year of my life. Despite living in many different cities, and even a third world country for education, I have never experienced a worse living situation in my life...and I hope to never have to again. The apartment and complex looked decent on first pass through and was quite spacious, however, once the lease was signed and I actually moved in, things rapidly declined. The following is a short summary of what I experienced. 1. My refrigerator leaked water, which was "fixed" and quickly recurred approximately 4 times, until I asked for a new refrigerator. The "new" refrigerator was granted, however it was far from new. It had dents and stains all over with old partially ripped stickers on the freezer walls. It looked like something that was found in the trash.....but I guess at least it was functional. I was told by management as long as it works, the condition does not matter. 2. Within 2 weeks of living in the apartment, water started pouring from the ceiling in my bathroom and I was told it was because "my neighbor above me dropped water and there was nothing to worry about". This continued to happen multiple times. My boyfriend collapsed multiple times in the apartment due to severe mold allergies (was diagnosed after having to see an allergist). After these instances he was only able to be in the apartment when taking prescription strength antihistamines. There were water stains all over the ceiling in my apartment and all of my clothes smelled of mold. I complained to management and was told there is no visible mold, I could not be released from my lease, and nothing had to be done. 3. We woke up one morning to find our car broken into in the parking lot and vandalized by a resident (a lovely threatening note was stuck to the windshield making this very evident). The police were called and a report was filed. Again I explained to management that we did not feel safe and I was told "this could happen anywhere" and nothing was done......although several months later a sign was placed in front of the complex by the town police stating "hide your belongings and hide your possessions"...I have never seen anything like this in my life. 4. The heat in the apartment would intermittently rise to over 85 degrees no matter what temperature it was set to...again complained and never fixed. 5. I came home one night from work to find that the lock on the front door to the building was changed and I couldn't get into my apartment. When I called maintenance I was basically laughed at and told that I had to put my key in then pull it out several millimeters before I turned the key to open the door...... I asked multiple times to please allow us to move since the apartment was a hazard to our health and we did not feel safe in the parking lot, however I was told by the lovely Robin Callahan (the housing manager) "do you want the landlord to lose money because your car was vandalized once, which could happen anywhere?". She is the most unprofessional person I have ever met in my life and is a major reason why I will never recommend this complex to anyone. read more

If you do move in make sure the AC is newer not the old ass GE unit. it will Kill your electric bill. Fees are way too much for pool use & pets maintenance men are horrible & very Lazy. The Gen. Mgr Robin C. at this complex is horrible. The girls in this Office just as bad too. They sidebar gossip & talk about the tennants right in front of you. You'll see trash everywhere & nobody cleans up. you have to Give them 3 months notice if you don't they will charge you 2 months rent & $200. in advertising fees & keep you deposit. They market their apartments as Luxury apartments. Their apartments are far from being luxury. Overpriced crappy mediocre apartments. They wanted to charge and additional $200.00 a month for an upgrade apartment with new counter tops, stove, and fridge. Since I was in such a time crunch to find a place to live due to my job. They were the only place that had availability. This was one of the worst mistakes ever! I am stuck in a lease for a year. The electric bill is astronomically high due to their non efficient heating and cooling system. The appliances are from the early 90's. The place is disgusting. read more

This property has tons of hidden fees, and they won't tell you until the 48 hour "hold deposit" ($200) was cashed!! The agent who was working on my case wasn't even in for 3 days!!! Very hard to work with!!! The apartment they show us wasn't as advertised, it was not "luxury" at all!! Kitchen is a mess, shelfs are broken, dish washer seems like it will be broke anytime. The bathroom is dirty. We originally said would do a 12 month lease, they said if we do 13 months it'll be 1 month free. LIE!! They contacted me later stated they don't have any 13 months lease available and we will have to do a 14 months lease. I asked what about the free month? They said there is no free month included since it's only "selected unit". This apartment management team is a mess. Do NOT recommend unless you want to have a horrible experience. read more

Finally. My security deposit is cashed and I can write my review of Hidden Lake Aparments! You should see the smile on my face! My fiancé and I wanted to move in together and with her working up north and with me down south, north Brunswick ended up being a good half way point for us. Typed: "north Brunswick apartments" into google and Hidden Lake came up. Made a HUGE mistake of not reading a whole bunch of reviews on this place and we took a trip out there to see it in person. The grounds are decent enough to be presentable and almost nice as you drive in. Get up closer and you'll see a smattering of fast food wrappers and cigarette butts from the delinquents who live here, but more to come on this later. We walked into the leasing office which appears slightly out dated and smells musty, but I don't usually get sold on a place just because it has a nice leasing office so this didn't really matter to us. We worked with Jacky (Caucasian, not the Latina one) who brought us for a tour of the grounds and to s couple of apartments. Jacky must have taken some happy pills that day because come to find out months later she's usually absolutely miserable and difficult to deal with. I believe we started by seeing the gym, which shouldn't even be called a gym. It's a collection of old, broken, and downright dangerous equipment. The arm of the bench press machine broke off when one resident was using it. It smells in there, partially due to the ancient carpets, but moreso due to some of the residents wearing sandals or no footwear at all and dripping their stinking foot juice all over the place. The apartments she brought us to were OK looking. Very large, clean (because they had just been refinished after the previous residents moved out) and plenty of closet space. The kitchens in these particular units were OK as well, although very dated looking. Once we moved into our actual place, our kitchen was horrendous. The 20-30 year old lenolium (spelling?) floor was peeling up in multiple locations. Pointed this out during our move in and they promised us a new floor... The first of many promises that NEVER came to fruition. I could keep going on and on about the condition of the place, but overall it was acceptable besides the kitchen so I'll stop there. The MAIN issue I had with this place is the OTHER TENANTS. Jacky told us during our first visit that there were "mostly young professionals, dentists and doctors" who lived at hidden lake. Could not possibly be further from the truth! The facts are this: hidden lake has a TON of section 8/welfare housing and the residents are exactly what you'd expect them to be: not working, home all the time, delapidated cars everywhere, kids playing unsupervised in the parking lots, smoking weed all over the place, loud drunk parties on the weekends (even Sunday mornings), and just overall horrible. We got DUPED so badly it wasn't even funny! Overall, we lived at Hidden Lake because it was exactly half way between my fiancé and my jobs and the rent was somewhat reasonable. Actually, I take that back about the rent. If the place had clean grounds, a nicer gym, and a new kitchen floor it would've been worth the $1400-something, but I feel that $1100 would have been more appropriate. WATCH OUT: I've heard that they raised rent in their places astronomically to $1600-1700... NOT WORTH IT!!! Bottom line: Do not live here. Unless you are on section 8 and have no other choice. There are NO young professionals there. It's turning into a slum and I don't think anyone there gives enough of a cr@p to make any changes to prevent this. There are other places around.. Keep looking. Would give 0.5 stars if I could. You're welcome for the 1 star, much more than you deserve. I do have to give ONE shout out to Stephanie, who was the ONLY pleasant or helpful person in that leasing office. Everyone else...Bye! read more

Word of advice: Run far away from this place. My boyfriend and I were looking at moving in together, and although we had already found a place we both liked we decided to look at Hidden Lake just to be sure that we were making the right decision. I called and made an appointment to see a one bedroom. I was informed that they had a one bedroom with a den and it was on promotion for $1650 a month(it is listed at $1720 on their website). I immediately asked what the catch was? I mean you can't find a 1500 sqft apartment for $1600 in New Jersey. I was assured that there was no "catch" and that they were looking forward to seeing us. We arrived on a Saturday at around 11 AM and were greeted by a really nice woman, at this time I can't ever remember her name. I did notice the "gym" which is carpeted and smelled like it had not been cleaned since it was built. We walked across the street to the building where we were going to see the apartment. The first thing you see is the garbage container which is sitting on the sidewalk in front of the building! We have to walk around it and it reaks! I asked her if it usually sits there and she said it wasn't supposed to but couldn't give me an answer on why it was there. (We noticed later as we were leaving that there were other containers on the sidewalk in front of other buildings). As we get to the building I can only notice the filth and the elements that were so old were falling apart. (i.e. intercom buttons, light fixture, etc.) Inside it was just as filthy and it smelled like someone had several cats. The carpet on the steps, which looked like at one point in time was blue, was black. The other door to the building was wide open and mail packages were thrown on the floor. (great security system!) When we finally reached the apartment we both looked at each other horrified. Here comes the "catch". The ceramic floor had a huge hairline fracture going from the front door to the beginning of the hardwood floor in the living room. There was a baby sock on the floor in the kitchen. The kitchen!!!! Oh the horror, it was something out of a horror film. The cabinets were old and dingy, the sink which I believe was stainless steel was indeed black, the stove had thick grease down the side. I couldn't believe what I was looking at and at the fact that they wouldn't even clean that place before showing it to people. Wait! There is more. Continuing on, the porch was in much need of a power wash. The washer and dryer were ok, although I found it hard to believe the energy efficiency sticker on it. The bedroom was a good size, but turning into the bathroom, the bathtub had black mold on the edged and the sink was still dirty with took paste. Again, I couldn't believe my eyes. I felt like I needed a disinfecting shower after that walk through. In conclusion, if you care about having a clean space and security don't bother going here. read more

Apparently Hidden Lake has two Yelp profiles, so I will happily re-post my original one here. To say that I've been eager to write this review is putting it mildly. Living at hidden lake is not something I would recommend to even my worst enemy (ok maybe someone I truly despise)..where oh where do I begin? Let's start with our tour of the complex by Jackie L. We were flat out lied to when we were toured and asked our questions. I understand that because of legal reasons, Jackie could not outwardly say that the majority of the people in the complex were individuals with no jobs, however, we were told the exact opposite. I believe it was something to the tune of this... Me: oh what kinds of people live here? Jackie: oh you know, doctors, lawyers, a lot of young professionals. DEAR LORD that couldn't have been a bigger lie. How about ummm people that looked shady af, CONSTANTLY filled the building with the smell of weed, and were loud, obnoxious, and completely inconsiderate. Aside from the shifty population, the building itself was old and in need of many updates. We were told by maintenance that we would be getting a new kitchen floor since ours was so disgusting. That never happened. The insulation was so bad that during the winter we literally froze our asses off at night despite our heat being on. They blamed it on us not having curtains up in the bedroom. Seriously? We called repeatedly to make them aware of this issue but we were basically laughed at after maintenance came for a look. I could go on and on about the issues here (the joke that is the amenities fee- a fee for a dilapidated "gym", and sad looking pools and tennis courts, the lack of communication from most leasing agents, with the exception of Stephanie, the piss poor snow removal, etc). Bottom line- stay away from hidden lake. Our experience was truly an unpleasant one. The only redeeming quality was the amount of space we got for what we paid. But was it worth it in retrospect? I have been living in Hidden Lakes Apts since November 2015. First of all, all the office staff is exceptionally nice and very fast to answer any questions you may have, Robin, the two Jackie's and Stephanie are all sweethearts..I am really shocked at anyone who would write otherwise. My apartment is large and beautiful and the kitchen floor needed some replacing and it was done beautifully. My neighbors are lovely, quiet and professionals to my knowledge. The maintenance staff is very responsive to any issue, even at all hours. The apt is a bit pricey but all my friends say..this is not an apartment..it is a home! Only negative is that the large garbage bins sometimes overflow..probably more because there are lazy tenant(like anywhere) that do not throw out their trash into the bins. All apts around make you pay the rec fee...yes I do not agree with having to pay it(as I don't use it) but that appears to be what the market will bear. Also you pay a pet fee up front...do you really need to add another one on monthly? These are more management issue with Kaplan not the staff at Hidden Lake. All I can say is I WOULD recommend these apts to anyone. I see a maintenance man every morning picking up the trash all around, and he is working hard, so it is more sloppy people than a maintenance issue! read more

i was searching for an apartment for myself and my dog and notice that Hidden Lake was "dog friendly" and they even went so far as to put a picture of a pit bull with a man on their website. I was still skeptical so I inquired about having a Siberian Husky. The gal that responded was nice but let me know that they did indeed have breed restrictions. So don't be fooled by what you see. This complex has a lot of problems that far outweigh any benefits. There are plenty of apartment complexes in this area and there's no need for more people to be trapped in Hidden Lake. Just to share my own annoying experiences: 1. These apartments are very poorly constructed and the quality of the maintenance is even worse. A few days after I had moved in I noticed several things had been slapped together and were barely holding up. For instance the bathroom door was falling out of the wall because it had been installed with tiny screws without any anchors. I ended up fixing a lot of these things myself because I didn't want to wait for the maintenance people to get around to it. A few months later I came home to find my apartment flooded because apparently a water heater broke in a unit upstairs. The people who came in to clean up the water broke a few small glass items in my apartment while they cleaned. They also, for some inexplicable reason, removed my clothes from the dryer and from the looks of it put something dirty and wet in there to dry, leaving my clean clothes on the kitchen counter. I was told my renters' insurance would have to cover anything damaged by the water, and as far as the items broken by the cleaning crew, I would have to produce receipts to be compensated. The ceiling was caving in from the water damage and a lot of my stuff was destroyed. This brings me to another point: 2. Hidden fees/Bullying: This management company refuses to take responsibility for their poor quality buildings so they require that all tenants buy renters' insurance to cover the inevitable damage your property will suffer if you rent here. They also require you to renew your lease over 3 months in advance. If you refuse to do so, either because you're moving or are just not sure, they threaten you by saying that your apartment will start being shown. Basically if you don't agree to renew they will open your home up to strangers when you're not around (keep in mind that the MAINTENANCE people break things in your apartment when you're not there). They also charge a pool fee (for a pool that never seems to be open), and an amenities fee. On top of the renters' insurance, pool fee, and amenities fee you can count on paying astronomical utility bills every month. The windows and doors are very cheap and the walls have no insulation, so you can basically feel the cold winter or hot summer air blowing right through your apartment. 3. Incompetent staff - to top it all off the people working at the management company are completely incompetent. Here's an example: every few months I receive "Late Notices" saying that I haven't paid rent or haven't paid the pool fee, so I owe these things with late charges, DESPITE the fact that I always pay my rent and the ridiculous pool fee is only paid once a year. So I have had to repeatedly call the office and deal with the rudest, most unpleasant and incompetent people there (especially one Robin Seyglinski). You will be put on hold repeatedly, accused of not paying your rent, told to stop talking so they can speak, all of which lasts for about ten minutes before they finally realize it's their own stupid mistake after which they say they will fix the problem. All so you can receive the same notice a few months later. To recap: this place is a nightmare, there are plenty of alternatives, stay away at all costs. Don't be fooled by modestly nice grounds and a big TV in the gym. This place is more trouble than anyone should have to deal with. Stay away. I plan on escaping as soon as possible. read more

I have lived at Hidden lake since April of 2015. The leasing process was easy and thought the office staff was professional and easy to work with. The monthly rent is on par with the rest of the area. I only had one maintenance issue (AC) and they were quick to respond in less than 24 hrs. I do think the recreation fee is nonsense and they should notify you if maintenance needs to enter your apartment which they don't. Overall those complaints aren't a big deal to me. The kitchen is outdated and you will have to pay extra for a modern unit. All that being said, the tenants are nice, the complex is safe, I never hear my neighbors etc. This whole area is expensive so I wont make a big deal about what seems to be a hefty price for a 1br in central jersey. I would recommend Hidden Lake to those who can afford it. read more
