Customer service is truly dead. Not to get all Boomer, but I walked into Hideaway Music today because I've been meaning to check out their selection. I walked in and the young person behind the counter didn't even greet me. I was in the store for a good 15 minutes and nothing lol. I found a Billie Holiday record with an old Sound of Market sticker on it. Such nostalgia, but I ended up not buying it because my business was obviously not valued. read more

Hideaway Music is one of the cooler places in Chestnut Hill. It has an excellent vintage vinyl selection, including a surprisingly good offering of old Jazz and Blues records. Their selection of new releases is small, but well chosen, so your odds of stopping in and finding a new record that you want may be higher than their selection size would suggest. They're more focused on vinyl than on CDs, but they do have a decent CD rack. And, I haven't bought any equipment there, but they have a small but very interesting collection of vintage turntables, speakers, etc., for sale, too. Their vintage vinyl prices are on the high side... Not obscene, but usually more than you would pay elsewhere. With the limited selection of new stuff and the elevated prices on the old, Hideaway isn't my go-to record store for typical purchases, but it's a great place to go when you're looking to discover "new" old music, when looking for a rarer album or for a used album where you need to be able to trust the condition (they even have a turntable set up with headphones so that you can make sure you like what you're getting), or when you want to spend an hour digging through a fascinating music collection. read more

Hideaway Music Used music lover Wilco, Dead, Radiohead All found for good price I stumbled in here after visiting the camera shop next door. I love the vinyl selection and the vintage posters. This is a tiny shop and seemingly small used disc selection, but the two times I've been here I always find way more than I want to buy. I am amazed that they have as much worth wild stuff. First time I was in they had maybe 3 Radiohead CDs (none of which were the one I was missing) but today they had pretty much the whole catalog and I picked up my missing OK Computer for $7.99! Tons of recent ACL bands, indie rock darlings, classic rock, great world music and jazz selection too. Usually in a place like this one sees a band that reminds you of another and you go searching for that second band...they have it! One tip: if you find a disc you like, but it's too much, keep looking. I found several copies priced differently...blemishes with liner notes, scratched jewel cases, etc...great deals to be had. After viewing a craigslist posting for Grateful Dead vinyl bootlegs, my boyfriend and I visited this little store in quaint Chestnut Hill last weekend. Its selection was pretty good, and the fact that they had these almost-impossible-to-find bootlegs was awesome. However, I was much less enthused with their prices. They were flat-out ridiculous. Yes, I know they're catering to yuppies and rich college students, but still. Albums that should sell for $4 or $5 are priced at $8 here. In fact, I'm not sure I saw a record (on the regular shelves, that is... not the discount three-for-ten bin in the back) that was priced below $8. Most were in the $10-$15 range. Eek. I'm pretty spoiled by Beautiful World Syndicate, because they (both locations) have a much better selection and their prices are very reasonable, so I compare every record store to them now. Unfortunately, this store pales in comparison. Now, the reason for the three-star rating: They have a bin in the back of the store with a variety of records that are three for $10. That deal alone isn't that incredible, I know, but what we found on the shelves was. We found Chris Smither's It Ain't Easy, which we would have paid $10 for at BWS (and rightfully so, because Smither vinyl is very hard to find), which was only in the discount bin because barely anyone knows that he even exists (obviously the case with Hideaway Music). Since we were hurting for money and most of them were priced at over $20 (really not a bad deal for what they were), we only bought one Dead bootleg for $8. I think it was priced so low because the cover is in terrible shape, but the vinyl itself is pristine. I left pretty confused about the owner's pricing strategy... only $8 for that bootleg, but $15 for a used copy of "Harvest"? Please... I don't care how good of condition that album is in. Not that I don't adore that album, but it's a $5 album... maybe $6 with a cover in decent shape. Definitely not $15. Anyway, I'd recommend going into this place just to peruse their back bins. I'm not sure how I stumbled across Hideaway but I'm sure glad I did. I could spend HOURS in that store and they let me every time without giving me weird looks. It's like they just *know* how good it is to soak up the sight, sounds and smell of a vinyl record. Note: I've never shopped in there for CDs or any kind of memorabilia/collectibles. So I can't tell you what I think of their prices or selection. Owner has always been nothing but pleasant. If he didn't have a specific record I was looking for, he offered to order it for me & hunt it down. (Although I never walked out of there with at least five things I never intended on getting in the first place.) Prices are pretty decent and it's worth spending the money to help out a local business. I wish I could own this place. I also wish more people appreciated a good record store when they found one. Found this place through an app for finding record stores, and I figured I'd give it a shot. My first impressions were great, nice selection of turntable equipment, CDs, and cheap, quality vinyl. I spent about half an hour in there and got a pristine "In Through The Out Door" by Led Zeppelin for $5. And while I was checking out I heard "El Camino" by The Black Keys playing and I mentioned I'd love to get it on vinyl, and the owner said "we have a bunch here if you want one". SOLD. Im giving this place an extra star because they sold me El Camino a week before the release date. If you like vinyl from 50s-70s, this place is your heaven. read more

Visited a couple stores up in the Mt Airy/Manayunk area this weekend, and Hideaway is worth a definite stop! All the vinyl in this place is clean clean clean - great selection of mostly older 60s-70s stuff, although a number of new indie releases lined the wall. Great find and large selection on vinyl records, didn't have any metal or rock from 80's but they have a used section deal which is great 3 LP's for $10. Had every genre made. I'll be going back for sure. read more

A decent selection of new and used CDs as well as a well organized vinyl collection in the back. Some very inexpensive music posters plus a few expensive signed posters. For some reason there were about 10 signed Beatles posters/ $100 each - if that's your thing this is the place for you! read more

i would come here during my lunch break to browse the used cds looking for the little gems that would either fill in the gaps in my collection or turn me on to something new - pricing was ok, not great for a while i coveted a turntable that was for sale in the front window...i have a box of inherited vinyl that needs to be played new cds could be found on the wall opposite the used cd bins vinyl and posters were towards the rear of the store, if i recall correctly read more

The store maintains a modestly sized selection of vinyl and the condition of the stock is generally excellent. Consequently, the prices are higher than some of the area's other stores.I've found them to offer no discount even on a decent size purchase ($50). They generally offer less than other stores for for your trade, even if your items are desirable and in good condition. All in all, a worthwhile stop for serious vinyl collectors read more

This record store is very interesting. It has CD and LP. The LP selection is good and the "core" of what's on the floor VS what you would normally see in a Record Store is very good. In Labour terms: There's not a lot of crap! The reason is quite simple, it's not the biggest store and the owner clearly know who's his buyer and what he wants. Some comment would say this place was cheap, maybe for local market it's the case, I can say that during my trip to the US, Cincinnati had better pricing and in my own town, Montreal has better prices as well. However, it was decent because the records we're in good to very good shape. There's also some new reprint Record for indie bands and old school jazz. Good place to stop, have money in your pocket and get ready to buy some good records! read more

I don't buy very many cd's anymore. iTunes just makes it too easy to have instant access to many artists. However, when I want to have an actual disk, I head to Hideaway. If I had a record player I would totally buy vinyls here as well as their selection looks pretty sweet. I love that I can almost always find what I'm looking for. And if I can't? They'll order it for me. I prefer the posters that line the Hideaway walls instead of running into grubby guys in Best Buy t-shirts. I don't really understand some of the negative reviews of this shop. It's a smallish, but really interesting record shop. They have some great older records from the 50s, 60s, and 70s (mostly jazz, blues, pop, rock), and a smaller selection of new vinyl. They have some vintage stereo equipment for sale, which is pretty neat, but most importantly the owner is a really nice guy. read more

Seems like a nice enough place. Good selection of used LP's and vintage audio equipment. My only issue is the pricing is off, in many cases way off. Either HAM is paying a premium to locate the used inventory (to ensure some good stuff is in stock, and there was quite a bit of good stuff in EX - NM cond in stock) and this must be passed on to the consumer. If I am patient enough, my guys in Philly will have the same pressings in same condition for at least 5 and in some cases 15 dollars cheaper (not talking about rare, crazy stuff here either) - this is the reason for the sub-par review. I have a hunch its BAU at HAM and they are overcharging for vinyl, just as they were doing 10+ years ago. Can't blame them, based on the positive previews (on price) it seems the majority of HAM's clientele is undiscriminating, naive or doesn't care what is reasonable and fair in the vinyl secondary market. read more
