Best CD section in all of Philadelphia! I've found some of my best finds here as a CD collector. Their new CD selection is the largest and most robust I've seen in the city and their used section is large as well. I'm not a record collector, but some times I take a peek and they always have presses I'd pick up if I had a player. The couple who own it are super sweet. I love bebop jazz from the 50's & 60's and for my birthday, my wife suggested a record store road trip. Our first stop was Main Street Music and to be honest, we could have ended it there. The selection was fantastic. I mostly go for the old copies in VG+ or Mint condition, but they had so many of the albums I wanted in pristine new editions, priced right. That's so important because so many other stores charge outrageous prices for vinyl. I got to talking to the lady at the counter and told her what we were up to and she gave me some guidance on my list of places no longer in business and some substitutes. We also had a chat about some other new releases. It was a great atmosphere, with great selection of many genres and great pricing. Park at the public lot up the street and it's an easy walk. I want to own my music and films outright making them impervious to the amorphous vagaries of the "cloud" or the fraudulent ownership of film when my cable box craps out and loses all stored content. But that's just me. So, with a space jammed with both genres at very attractive pre-owned prices, I bring you Main Street Music. One of life's simple pleasures is browsing through a music store and Main Street doesn't disappoint. The staff is relaxed and knowledgeable while the "finds" are plentiful. They gave up on the format so never again will I have to plunge my hand into the Third World Petrie Dish known as the $5 DVD bin at Walmart. My immunologist is thrilled, as am I at Main Street Music. Something that I didn't know was that most cars still have cd players! Afterwards we hopped in the car and popped them in and listened! If these people are going to hold listening and record release events they need to have a staff person outside the door at all times directing their "line" of people to be single file and pressed up against the side of the building. I went by today on my mobility device and this gaggle of 20-something cis white straight girls (isn't it always?) were clusterfucked five per clump blocking the entire sidewalk, and had the audacity to get upset with *me* when I came through basically having to scream "excuse me please" to try and get them the fuck out of my way, to the point where I gave up screaming and just barreled through (at which point they of course had the audacity to tell me I should have said excuse me, as if it wasn't THEY who were blocking the entire sidewalk.) If your customers don't have the decency to leave space for handicapped people to get through then you don't deserve to have customers. I've filed a complaint with L&I. read more

My very belated first quarantine review of 2021 goes to one of the majestic places that still manages to make the music happen. There was a time back in the day where record stores were my everything! But while that has changed drastically during the Spotify era, I still love perusing a good selection of new and old albums, and to discuss bands with some fellow music junkies, and Main Street Music has been Manayunk's place to do just that and then some for several decades! Maybe one day we'll still be able to enjoy a live performance and signing during Record Store Day and other special occasions. But even during the Covid-19 era, Main Street Music has managed to go above and beyond in making things accessible by offering things like curbside pickup and being able to call in/ask for ordering albums when they don't have them on the shelves. Everyone who works there also knows their tunes and is able to make some spot-on recommendations. My record collector friends have absolutely raved about their selection of everything from obscure finds to rare new reissues. Meanwhile, a fossil like me who still buys the occasional CD has enjoyed their selection and reasonable prices with most new albums going $10-15, and good used finds going for as low as $3. So when it comes to a spot like Main Street Music it's easy to proclaim that Record Store Day is everyday so long as you enter. read more

I went in intending to purchase some used vinyl but the selection of new was so good that was all I bought. Prices were very fair on new and even better on used! Went to Main Street Music for the first time in a year, and was not disappointed. Before making the trip up from Center City, we had the crew there place CDs on hold for us, which we had looked up on their website beforehand, which they were glad to do. Every title we asked for was in stock. My pile consisted of replacements & some that were newer. Namely, The Doors' "L.A. Woman" & "London Fog 1966" (their earliest live recording). Four Enya releases rounded out my purchase. My fiance got selections from 10 mind blowing artists. You can find rare stuff here. Main Street Music carries many newer releases in CD as well as older catalogue in new & used. The prices are great. I'd say that the store is half CD & half vinyl. For those of us who unapolegetically prefer CDs this is the place to frequent. It was a treat to see newer merchandise displayed so invitingly. Jamie was friendly & awesome helping us out. John & Pat (the owner) were all cool. This is a store where you can chat with the staff. Looking forward to coming back here to support this gem of an indie music store. read more

Video may have killed the radio star, but the internet hasn't killed the record store. Music stores are not dead and Main Street Music in Manayunk is the perfect example of why they aren't. Their selection is killer. I think one of the reasons is because they sell new and old CDs/vinyls. Don't let the small storefront fool you. They have a lot to offer when you start to go through their inventory. They also have in-store concerts, which is the reason for my most recent visits. For anyone who purchased the Good Old War CD/vinyl during a designated time received wristbands to come back for an in-store performance. So you know how I mentioned the storefront isn't huge? Well, a small store makes for a ridiculously intimate concert experience. When purchasing the CD, I asked the girl working the counter how long the concert would be. She said typically they are about 20-30 minutes. I lucked out with an hour long set, plus meet and greet. I don't know how often these types of events happen, but it's really cool that they happen, period. The prices for music are reasonable and they are a local business. Main Street Music might be the best all around record store in Philadelphia. They have a great selection of CDs. There are other stores with bigger vinyl selections in terms of number of albums, but theirs isn't tiny and seems better than most in quality. It seems that they stock all of the new releases... I've found every new release that I've sought there, and I can't think of any other stores where that's the case... they have a good stock of the popular classics, and they have a big enough selection of other stuff, including some real gems, to keep it interesting if you're in there to browse. Unlike many of their competitors, their prices are reasonable. I have the bad habit of doing online price comparisons after I make any purchases at brick and mortar stores, and I've found that they're often cheaper than other physical stores and when they're more expensive than a retailer like Amazon, it's by little enough that it's still easy to be glad that I patronized a local shop. Plus, their frequent buyer card (get a free CD/DVD/LP, up to $15, after every tenth new or tenth used purchase) makes it even a bit more reasonable for people who will make a number of purchases there. Most importantly, their service is great. The people there are friendly. You don't get any of the snobbishness that you get at too many other record stores. They know their music well and can help with selections in pretty much any genre. They're happy to provide advice or have a conversation, but know how to leave you alone if you give the signs that you want to look around without being bothered. Main Street Music is one of those record stores that reminds you why you want to go to record stores in the first place. read more

Obviously, the independent music store is a dying breed, but Main Street Music seems to be holding it's own. The store is pretty small, but they use the space well, and there's actually far more CDs in there than you'd assume. The CDs are mostly all mixed in together and organized alphabetically, but they do have specific genre sections such as indie, local and jazz. They also have a good amount of used CDs and DVDs. They are always on top of new releases, and typically you can get a good deal on brand new music. Otherwise their prices aren't really outlandish. The costs range from about $10 to $15 for full albums, which isn't so bad. I won't deny that I'm far more apt to go for the $10 buy, though. If there isn't something on the racks, they have no problem ordering it for you at no additional charge. I've taken advantage of this a few times with no complaints. It's always taken less than 2 weeks for the CD to come in, and they let you know immediately when it's arrived. The store is run by a bunch of older guys that are pretty friendly, and know their stuff. It's slightly embarrassing to admit, but when I'm in there often I'll just listen to their banter/discussions and chuckle to myself. They also put together a virtually unbeatable Music Quizzo team that has only been beaten once at Dawson Street Pub. We went this past Tuesday thinking we wouldn't be too bad at it, but let me tell you; that ish is tough! I know stealing music is way easier, way cheaper, and way more prevalent, but sometimes it just feels sososo good to avoid all the leaks of advance albums, wait for the actual release date, and hold the album in your hands. Outstanding service. Went in a bought a speaker and two vinyls for the first record player I've ever owned. Encountered difficulties when installing at home and called Main Street Music. Upon hearing about my difficulties they offered tremendous support by calling in one of the experts they had on staff. My problem (which I should note was entirely a result of my confusion) was quickly remedied and I was even given extra batteries for the speaker's remote. I used to come here for years, especially when I was still living around these parts. While I was in High School and even College I tried to get a job here, since at least I thought I had a decent knowledge of music ranging from a broad number of bands, musicians, etc.. Though I guess I just wasn't cutting it to the owners and dudes who work there, all trying hard to look like members of 'the strokes'. Not saying they don't know their stuff, because they do. And the selection available isn't bad either going from pop to punk to rock to rap to jazz to tap and a ratatat-tat! It's all here, the space is kind of cramp and gets worse on weekends and busy events on Main Street. This is the store where I first found the copy of 'Boards of Canada's epic album 'Music Has The Right To Children'' and so this store holds a place in my heart and helping me increase my ever expanding taste. read more

Cool shop. They have a ton of CDs, but still a good selection of vinyl too which is what I was going after. They have some really good popular and new albums at reasonable prices too. The bargain bin was really well priced but, as bargain bins often go, there wasn't a whole lot that jumped out at me. The new copies section is where I was looking and I couldn't decide what to leave with, there was so much! And again, the prices were reasonable. I saw albums there that other places around Philly would sell for much more. I"m always on the lookout for a good indie music store . Adam's last review peaked my interest so I headed over to Manayunk today to pay a visit. Parking was a little crazy due to the Art Festival, which just happened to be today. The store is pretty well laid out, with new music divided up by genre, used music, a 1$ section, and a LP section. The prices on the new music ranged from very reasonable(10.98 for new jazz releases and the new Sigur Ros album) to a little expensive(15.99, eg the new Raconteurs album). They had a fair catalog for a number of artists I was interested in. The store even had a "Establish your indie cred" and "Heard it on WXPN" sections. The used CD section was a mixed bag. Some CD's were priced reasonably. Others were a little overpriced given the amount of scratches. Interestingly, they had a large number of indie/rare live recordings of several bands in the used section. They seemed a little overpriced, but then again I haven't seen them on the shelves anywhere else before so I suppose they are rare. They had a pretty good selection for used rock CD's. Sadly, there were few used jazz CD's. The LP section was pretty small. They had some nice used jazz LP's at reasonable prices. I had to walk away before I started piling up the LP's. I ended up using the listening station that they had in order to sample a couple of CD's I was interested in. Wisely the store owners placed their speakers for the overhead music AWAY from the listening station, unlike the Marlton Tunes. So I was actually able to listen to the music without having to potentially damage my hearing in order to hear the music over death metal like I often do at the Marlton Tunes. The dollar bins were nothing great, but I did have another music enthusiast ahead of me who had piled up a stack so I have a feeling he may have snapped up some CD's I would have got. Oh well. C'est la vie. All in all a pretty good experience. I"ll have to pop in here again some weekend and see if I can fill in some gaps in my collection. read more

I am a huge fan of this place! I am very old school about purchasing my music, I am a child of the 70's and must be able to look over every CD not from the internet. I started collecting records since I was 5 years old and continue to collect music. If you are like I am, I enjoy perusing Main Street's collection of used and new CD's. No pressure, laid back and lots of fun to see what is new. They always let me listen to see if I like the music before I purchase and suggest something in my particular taste of music. This shop ranks right there with some of my all-time favorites like Plan 9 in Richmond VA, the dearly departed Vinyl Solution in Tuscaloosa AL and Almost Blue in Asheville NC. Support local indie record shops or they will continue to disappear! They do an excellent job of managing their inventory of new releases in both CD and vinyl and they have an interesting mix of used music too. I dare you to spend 5 minutes combing through the used CD's and not find something that you have to have, used to have, or makes you chuckle with nostalgia. The staff is very friendly and they know how to dial the "music snobbery" up or down depending on the clientele or the conversation. They never fail to offer to special order anything that they don't have in stock. They also have a pretty active calendar of in-store performances, although I am bad about forgetting to go. read more

Awesome record shop with really knowledgable and friendly staff. Small, but you can definitely find some great used (and new) gems on vinyl and CD. It's great to have staff that is able to provide great recommendations and help you figure out which albums you'd enjoy. Parking is right behind the store and the shop is nice enough to validate it so it's great! Their in-store performances are amazing, super intimate and fun! I just caught my first in-store performance - Langhorne Slim and it was truly spectacular! They pack the place so get there early to get a prime spot. They even had beer and pizza and other goodies for people to enjoy before and after the show! We live in the area but had never been in to this shop. So, we made this a destination one day when my college son was home on break. He and we have new turntables and wanted to add a few new albums to our collections. We found quite a few old albums and also a few new. I thought the selection was average. Based on that, I'd give a 4 star.... However, the people working there must not have been the same as others reviewers have encountered. I found them to be rather standoffish - never a word of welcome or offer of help. After checking out with about $75 of stuff, I realized I had forgotten to use our XPN membership discount (part of why we went). When I mentioned it, I got a blank look....and no offer to take care of a customer who just purchased quite a few things. Oh well, their loss. There are enough other shops in the area - I won't be back. read more

Tiny shop in Manayunk that's well worth a visit. The store is unfortunately cluttered with about 70% floor space dedicated to CDs (when will those please go away), with a decent selection of vinyl near the front door. Prices are decent, with most new releases lining the walls. Not sure how often the used vinyl gets refreshed, but I was able to find a number of things on my first visit there. As others have said, the store layout stinks and gets cramped...again, lose the CDs and free up some room for more vinyl! read more

I've been to most, record stores in the Philly/ Delaware region as well as Seattle/Pacific Northwest's, and this is a great store if you like new releases or Cds. Really excellent. Even among their new releases, which was the largest section for new arrival LPs I've seen locally, they have obscure, psychadelia, punk, metal, pop, you name it if someone's put a LP out recently it will be there. Much friendlier than Long in the Tooth. Parking is also cheap. It's easier, quieter, and friendlier than West Center city. I've found the one record store I'll keep coming back to. read more

Love. Love. Love. This is in my top 5 favorite record stores in Philly. And I'm not saying that because I live 3 minutes away. I come here enough, but not too often, that when I walk in, the staff always says hi and remembers who I am. They have more CDs than vinyl, but I'm okay with that. They never hesitate to special order something and they'll have it for you in 2 days, it's pretty awesome considering not a lot of record stores let you order from them, AND that have a frequent buyer card! This place is hands down one of the best record shops in and around all of Philadelphia. They're always open, they always have their catalog stocked ! (even if it's just one copy), they are great about ordering if they don't carry a particular item. I called ahead to check to see if they had a particular CD in stock (the day the record came out !!). They had the deluxe version of it, cheaper than what Amazon was selling it for. I walked in to buy the CD and walked out with not only the CD but Clash's "London Calling" on vinyl in mint condition for $10 !! Their vinyl collection is ace, including new and old. They are one of the few that stock specials during "Record Store Day" and always have some type of event going on regardless of what is going on in Manayunk that day. I remember going here as a kid. I'm glad I'm now around the corner from it. This is the place to go for anyone looking for an experience who doesn't want to go into the city and deal with traffic, crowds, and a let down. read more

In the heart of the Main Street strip, Main Street Records has been a mainstay for serious music fans in both Northwest Philadelphia and beyond for years! Filled with a plethora of CDs, cassettes and vinyl, their staff somehow nicer than they are knowledgeable. And that's saying something else because these are music fans through-and-through! I came in here a few weeks ago to try and purchase a copy of 10,000 Maniac's "Our Time In Eden" on vinyl. This was the favorite album of Tonya M., a woman I dated until recently. I am coming off the end of a 14-year marriage to Cynthia (and the mother of our twin sons Bradley and Bryan, aka B'n'B). Tonya is looking to repair her life after having to spend 18 months in jail for voter fraud. I'm an actuary. I realize now in retrospect taht i threw too much of my life into my career and called the "help line" our HR department has in order to establish a better work-life balance. However, I was also recently offered a promotion and now run loss risk variables for DEB Stores, one of the most exciting and innovative chains in the woman's retail industry. It involves long hours and a lot of travel and, as a result, Tonya M. and I broke up. Main Street Music did not have "Our Time In Eden" when I sought it out. They also did not have any records from my favorite bands -- Earth Crisis, Snapcase, Madball, early One Life Crew, Youth of Today. But their staff did tell me they could order all of those records for me. They called me and told me that they had a bunch of the albums I wanted -- The California Takeover Live, Shelter's early stuff. I came in and picked it up. And they also had "Our Time In Eden." I looked at it. And I decided I still wanted it. Because I want to give it to somebody. I would recommend Main Street Music to anyone in the Manayunk/Roxborough area who realizes they met a lady friend who was helping them transform into a better person until they returned to old habits and started to throw themselves into work as opposed to dealing with their emotions and fear of risk and wants to rectify this mistake. read more

I live close here, but I am a mostly vinyl shopper, so I don't come here that much. The vinyl selection is too small for my tastes, but occasionally I find a record I don't have in the dollar section. The CD section is pretty good(not as big as Princeton Record Exchange, but then I don't live near Princeton, so this settles it, when I don't feel like driving so far). They are plenty of used stuff for $3 - $5. However, today, I bought 3 cds from R.E.M., UFO and Chet Baker and all were in the new section. The R.E.M. was a double cd and it cost me only $16.99 while the other two were $10, so it is not more expensive than iTunes. Although in this Ipad age, I am a bit afraid that may not be enough for some shoppers. The biggest reason for the 4 stars is not the CDs, though. I am not a relic and ready to hear new artists, but the new artists I like are often not playing on the radio, getting a lot of press attention and are generally not the movers and shakers of today's music industry. Today was a good example, I heard something from a great new artist named Alabama Shakes(sp?) who hasn't been released yet . In today's music, soulful generally means Adele or Whitney Houston, but my definition of soulful means Aretha or Janis Joplin. Well, Alabama Shakes fitted my definition of soulful that I thought it came from the 60s and 70s only to find it was new stuff. Its thanks to them that I heard of the artist who I wouldn't have heard about if I hadn't walked in the store. Likewise, a lot of indie artists come to play acoustic concerts. I haven't seen any yet, but I know why these artists choose to play here, because it is one of the places that likes an artist because it is good, not because everyone and their mother listens to it. read more
