If decided to come to the Pescadero area to explore, El Cerrito is a great spot. An hour drive from Cabo's congestion. Be prepared for unpaved streets and bare bone construction sites. Drive carefully and use a navigation app because the roads off the highway are not well signed or lit. It's totally safe. I know what you're thinking...who needs a farm to table restaurant? Hierbabuena is so much more than a concept. Everything is crafted with the freshest and locally grown produce. If you're looking for cheap eats, there's a lot of options. If you need something special and aimed at great ingredients, this is the spot. Service is kind, knowledgeable, and prepared to give you recommendations. You're tucked away in a garden oasis, with incredible nourishment. There are many flowers, birds, and a great playlist. The meal started with a gratis tiny cup of tasty butternut squash soup. I requested a chicory salad because when is chicory a menu star? It's no surprise that this salad was good. The leaves were dotted with tangy goat cheese and gems of pomegranate seeds. Chicory was the star. I had the fish tacos, three dressed in adobo seasoning, a recommendation over the grilled sea bass special. The plate had three small spoons filled with guac, salsa verde, and the most incredible salsa macha. The salsa macha had notes of chocolate that paired well with the adobo seasoned fish. Don't miss this! The chile relleno was filled with quinoa and veggies, plated on top of two sauces. The flavors were really tasty and I appreciated the thoughtful vegetarian option that highlighted seasonal flavors. I walked in knowing I wanted cheesecake for dessert but then learned a favorite was their flan. I switched with no regrets. This flan was better and nothing like anything I've had before. If you like flan and love coconut, this is for you. The cocktails were so good. The martini was different, I loved this passion fruit margarita, the watermelon juice with tequila was refreshing, and they had great local beer options. I was very happy with this lovely meal. On our second trip to B.C.S. in a decade I rediscovered my love for Hierbabuena. It's been almost a decade since I last went and seemingly nothing has changed. Because it doesn't need to. It is heaven. We went twice on this trip and I'm looking forward to our last meal there this evening before we leave tomorrow. Everything is absolutely delicious here. The food is farm to table so it's as fresh as you can get. Everything is prepared with utmost precision and care. We tried a lot of other highly rated places including a restaurant down the same road on the beach that costs at least 4 times as much and nothing comes close to the food at Hierbabuena. The menu rotates slightly based on what's in season. I had (on all visits) the sea bass (flawless), chicken enchiladas (best by far I have had anywhere), arugula salad (perfect) and the pulled pork (I think the best pork I have ever had anywhere). The flan remains my favorite desert and it can't get enough. The setting is wonderful inside a garden, the staff are positive and cheerful, and the food is the best I've had just about anywhere and I have been lucky enough to enjoy some amazing meals. read more

Coming from portland, Oregon you see a lot of "farm to table" restaurants but nothing comes close to this. You walk through the gardens to get to your table. This is not just a catchy phrase, this is true farm to table. The grounds are beautiful, there's plenty of seating in a beautiful outdoor space as well as a bar. The menu is small but I had a hard time deciding between what to get because it all looked good. Not to mention the daily special menu is an entire menu in itself. I highly recommend making this a stop while you're in town. They speak English/Spanish and there's both an English and Spanish menu. read more

I could eat dinner here every night! It's in the middle of a beautiful farm and has plenty of GF and Veggie options. We went for hummus and veggie appetizer along with the beet salad. The hummus was amazing, our 6-year-old says it's the best hummus she's ever had. For mains, we did a margarita pizza for the kiddo (which she passed on to eat more veggies and hummus!), the veggie enchiladas, and the pizza with chorizo, cream cheese, and jalapeno. Loved our pizza. The veggie enchiladas were good, just not as good as the pizza. Cocktails are delicious and fresh. Can't wait to return and see what's on the menu next time. read more

I've been here three time. All three experiences were excellent. Off the beaten path, you have to travel down a dirt road for well over a mile before you reach this little oasis. Walking through the garden to get to your table in this outdoor venue has a definite farm-to-table vibe. You can just tell that what you're about to eat, at least as far as the veggies go, was grown on site. Overall, the menu is simple, both in terms of its size and frankly, lack of ingredients. It's very obvious they don't over-season the food with salt and other spices, so you really have to enjoy natural flavors of natural foods. Otherwise, you may honestly find the menu to be somewhat bland. Everything from the cocktails to the desserts are made with a great deal of attention and care, so don't expect to be in and out of here in less than a few hours. Also don't expect cheap prices. Aside from the fact that this restaurant in particular could be seen on "Parts Unknown," Todos Santos itself is a bit off the beaten path. Beautiful setting in the oasis of El Pescadero in Baja Sur, Mexico. The name means spearmint, and the restaurant provides fresh farm to table organic meals at a great price. Gluten free diets are easily accommodated here. We had the catch of the day Sea Bass cooked 2 ways- lemon and garlic and also with a mole sauce. We also enjoyed the wood fired margarita pizza, French onion soup and beet salad. The coconut flan with caramel sauce was the best I have ever had. Everything was cooked to perfection with amazing service. It's been 6 years since we ate here last when traveling, and it lived up to my expectations and worth visiting every time. Then all the sudden, you found this restaurant next to the road. You got in and you realized there's a beautiful eatable garden, leading to a nice dining area with blankets and wood burning pizza oven. That's my impression of Hierbabuena! We ordered a bunch of food, such as eggplant parmigiana, chimichanga, pizza anbut I'd say I like the ravioli (both the regular and the squash one) the best. I really liked the chewy texture, and the sauces were delicious as well! The other thing I really liked was their bar area. My boyfriend has told me about this little restaurant in Todos Santos a few times and I'm so thrilled that I was able to eat here with him and his mom on this surprise trip to Mexico. At first they weren't letting anyone else in as they were already full but we got lucky and the guy let us in so we could wait in the bar area until a table opened up. Too many spectacular options on the menu I just could NOT decide. I'm always a huge sea bass fan so after changing my mind 1,000 times I stuck with that decision. I also ordered the garden salad which was delicious! The fish was a little dry but I still ate everything, gladly. The experience and company was wonderful. The bathrooms are very cool and the entire property is so organic and lush. I truly hope to go back some day! read more

Mains all look divine! We ordered the flank steak as we have eaten a lot of seafood and it did not disappoint. It was excellent in flavor. The pesto is fabulous. Wine list has a good balance, we ordered Mexican wines and even though the Cab/ Merlot blend was very young in taste, it was delightful. The coconut flan was not their best. Amazing. Wonderful location with beautiful functional gardens you walk through to get to the restaurant. It's like an oasis that is just everything you need after eating out at a bunch of random places during a trip in Baja. We went for an early dinner (or a late lunch) and there was almost no one here which was glorious, but more when we drove by later in the evening they did look to be getting pretty busy. The food quality is so high, and the attention to detail is fantastic. Such delicious vegetables and salad and superb meats expertly prepared (we had a steak entree and fish entree and Borge were outstanding). Everything here is great, and what really stood apart for me was the fantastic cocktails and the great wine list. I cannot recommend the food, drinks and experience of eating and spending time here. My 700th review comes despite the pandemic. I'm working extremely remotely in very Southern California - Todos Santos, Baja California Sur. Here I found a restaurant worthy of a special review. Hierbabuena is straight fire. The restaurant is literally a surrounded-by-farm to table establishment. The horseshoe-shaped outdoor dining area wraps around the ultimate open-air kitchen, including a wood-fired oven where fabulous looking pizzas are born. All wrapped by a harmoniously designed vegetable garden and acres of row farmland. It's a farm-table-kitchen Turducken! For starters, Hierbabuena makes a kale salad a delightful work of art. The Dry Chile and lime dressing perfectly balanced acidity with a hint of sweetness. Spice level on point. Kale could be more tender - but it's so incredibly fresh and full of flavor. Almonds and dates add texture. Pomegranate seeds and shaved Parmesan add the wow! The Enchiladas Zihuatanejo with local organic chicken on blue corn tortillas were all that. Exquisite small tortillas. A rich red tomato and Chile Guajillo sauce had a nice thickness. You can't find an enchilada with chicken more tender and flavorful. My gf's yellowtail was the catch of the day and perhaps the dish of the day. So delicious! She got it with vegetables as a side since it's a farm to table option. The yellowtail was perfectly grilled with a touch of salt and pepper. Grilled eggplant, carrots, tomatoes and fennel were as good as could be. Sweet with freshness. She said the corn was so sweet and delicious it was like sugar candy. The top shelf margarita was excellent, featuring añejo tequila and Grand Maronite Cordon Rouge. The Roganto Sauvignon Blanc was ideal with the enchiladas. Green apple and tropical flavors and semi-dry with great mouthfeel. I'd like to visit this winery in Valle de Guadalupe. By right now we're in Baja. Where fantastic service tops it off to make this a five-star spot. read more

Excellent experience from every perspective. We went on NYE which is often a bad night to dine out. They were well staffed and everything was perfect. Wait staff were fun and eager to help us with Spanish and vice versa. We sat at the x restaurant bar and thoroughly enjoyed c watching the chef who was calm and in his zone. We had a salad and onion soup to start. Both were well prepared and beautifully presented. For entrees we had a eggplant in tomato sauce and mahi mahi. I opted for simple grilled fish and veggies. So glad I did. They were so simply prepared and of such high quality that their flavors were allowed to speak for themselves. The dessert was ingesting but not a huge winner. This along with Jazamango were the two best meals I had in Baja (between Cabo and Pescadero/Todos Santos) during my trip. The setting was great and the menu was definitely vegetable forward. I ordered enchiladas that said they were filled with mixed vegetables. They were delicious but at some point I realized that there were no vegetables anywhere. I told the staff and they said it was a potato cheese but they hadn't changed the menu. The waitress never told me. (Nor did she bring the water I'd ordered.) I explained that I have a severe sugar allergy and cannot even eat things like potatoes, rice, wheat, even carrots. They apologized and asked if I wanted something else instead. After carefully scrutizing the menu, I ordered another dish that they assured had actual vegetables. It came and looked beautiful, if small. The food was surrounded by nuts and seeds. I took some into my mouth and immediately realized they were sweetened. I gave the dish back and ordered nothing else. My guess is it too would have been tasty, which is why they get 2 stars instead of 1. read more

This is definitely my new favorite restaurant in Baja California, maybe all of Mexico. We found this great place when when the restaurant at the place we were staying notified us that they were having a benefit dinner at their restaurant the night of our arrival. Since we were arriving late, we asked for suggestions and they made a reservation here for us. Good thing they did, because people without reservations were told a 1 hour wait. Not only were they getting overflow from the nearby place, there was also a large wedding party there taking up half the tables. So don't worry and don't expect that all the time - there are not many places to eat around here, so when one place is closed in high season for a benefit, others get crowded. This was an unusually large crowd. They clearly were not prepared for the crowd they had that night, but we were seated within 15 minutes of arriving. The small staff is friendly and helpful, the menu is small but varied, and the same for the wine list. They have a set menu and a set of special. Both are written on chalkboards for easy viewing. To label this place as "Mexican, pizza" is doing Hierbabuena a disservice, Yes, they have some Mexican dishes (enchiladas, chile relleno) but these are not your typical beans/meat/tortilla dishes. And yes they have pizza too. But they have fresh salads, house made ravioli, fresh made soups, and other dishes where many of the ingredients come straight from the garden you walk past as you arrive. It also means that the menu changes throughout the year - you can't grow beets in Baja mexico in summertime. They really do a "farm to table" type menu - though the meat and fish are obviously brought in. The entire place is open air - basically a large palapa. They also now have a bar area over to the side about 10 feet from the dining area with a few seats at the bar and a few chairs around a small table. Speaking of the bar, they have a full bar with a small but good selection of spirits (Grey Goose, Titos, Hendricks, Bombay, etc.). They have a handful of bottled beers and a selection of wines from the US, Mexico, and South America. More than enough to choose from. The first night we ordered the Beet salad, enchiladas Zihuataneho style, and roasted carrot ravioli. Even though we were not terribly hungry because we had been traveling all day, we polished off every morsel on our plates. This was even with the large crown they had to handle. A few days later we stopped mid day to pick up a couple items - oh, I didn't mention that they sell produce from their garden? fresh produce picked 20 feet away. We got a bunch of carrots to snack on with the hummus and crackers from Minisuper Munchies (http://www.yelp.com/biz/minisuper-munchies-pescadero). very good - as good as the ones I grow in my garden :). While we were there, they had pulled a pizza from the oven that they made to test the temp and have a little food for the staff and they offered us a slice. fresh, crispy thin crust with fresh basil. very good. The third time we were there was for dinner again. This time we got the Arugula salad, Chile Relleno, and the special soup of the day (I think Carrot and coconut). The owner remembered us (as he did the second time) and gave us a free small cup of the fava bean soup. Again, everything was wonderful. You could taste the freshness in the ingredients. The dressing on the salads is light and delicious. The Chile Relleno is probably the best I have ever had. My only disappointment is that they are not open every day.
