Ping pong, foosball, darts, free peanuts, video porn game machine things, complimentary food on certain nights (pizza, conies, etc.), can tell they love their small but loving and consistent regulars! I stopped by High Beck on St. Patrick's day with some friends, It was definitely busy but we could still find a spot at the bar! The drinks are cheap and the barbecue chicken pizza was extremely good! I knocked one star off for the overall cleanliness. However, it's a dive bar after all and that's kind of what makes them divey. Good spot. read more

Pro:Nice on High Street with outdoor seating. Great spot to sunday afternoon to sit watch traffic and be outside. Ordered inside at the bar self service. Bartender did bring us food. Con:Smells like an old bar and pee on the outside. Food was mediocre to poor. Wanted to try the BBQ. Zero taste and appearance between beef and pork. High beck is one of those bars that just is what it always has been, and they don't plan on changing a thing. Doesn't matter what time of day there will always be people there. Shame on those who refer to the Hi-Beck as a " bar dive." The only "diving" that goes on is the diving that people engage in when they meet in one of the coolest bars in Columbus. Trust me, I know. The menu is both healthy and unhealthy as is the draft and bottled beers. Domestic and "imported" like the people that go there. I have never seen a fight in the place except for two hillybillies that were dealt with in a matter of seconds and that was over 10 years ago. Hopefully my good friends Keith Smith, Alonzo Horn and especially Marvin Lawman will come on in so I can buy them a drink and tell them how sorry I am for the wrongs I have done to them. I think consistently the best bar in Columbus. It's a dive, but that's ok. You'll get a mixture of people - young professionals, punks, old neighborhood people. Great owners who will talk to you and make you feel welcome. They know how to operate a bar and even when it's packed you can get a drink without much hassle. Good darts that are rarely used in comparison to other bar games inside. Surprisingly good brisket pizza. Bathrooms are a little scary, but that only adds to the charm in my opinion. read more

High Beck Tavern is likely a consistent stop for the legal beagle community given its close proximity to the courthouse system in Columbus. Just fall down the short slope and span over I-70, south on High Street, and you'll be at the front door. My visit was during lunch hour and the patrons seemed mostly lawyers doing lawyering with clients or other esquires. High Beck offers two menus; one is the "catch of the day" with the other being standard fare. My friend got "chicken and noodles" plate on a Monday and he really ate it all up. The meal came with some Texas-sized toast to wipe the plate clean. I ordered the Wedge Salad and was happy - it was tasty and large enough to satisfy the lunch hour hunger. Never would I knock High Beck. The place has been around a long time and serves a purpose. My wager? Lots of alcohol is sold there from 4PM - 11PM; just the stress alone from having to be at the courthouses would drive a woman or man to enjoy double-fisting cocktails after the trials and tribs are taken care of. I've been here a few times because it is near where I work. The food is decent and not terribly expensive, but the serve is AWFUL. It takes forever to get your food and it is often wrong. Good luck trying to come here for a quick lunch because you'll be late clocking back in. read more

i have loved this place for years. its always good and delicious. they have a nice patio, and its got a cool vibe. the bbq is great, though most recently our food was kind of cold, but it wasnt a big deal. the brisket and pulled pork are quite tasty, and the corn bread is to die for. we all love the baked beans! they have great specials, free (tasty) pizza, coneys, etc. love this place! read more

This bar is great! Drinks are reasonably priced, ping pong, darts, and pool tables. What more could you ask for. I could be wrong but seems the run either free food or buy one get unlimited rest the night on certain food items. Which i think is rather clever and awesome. Food is typical bar food but who cares when you've got few good drinks in you. Bartenders were very friendly as well. Also good mixture of people not your normal "click" bar. read more

I'm confused about why High Beck is even open during the day. I'm sure if you went there and got really, really ... really drunk on a random weeknight then the food and service would probably seem great. I went there for lunch though because it's right next to my office, it was really hot outside and I just wanted to hop over to the little neighborhood place next door and grab something good to eat and refreshing to drink. Big mistake. I kind of want my 14 dollars back. First of all, when I walked in there, the overwhelming smell of mold and rotting wood slapped me right across the face. Wait, no, BEFORE I walked in there was a knocked-over trash can blocking the entrance. When I managed to get inside, I sat down at the bar where there was a dirty dish rag attracting flies. So I moved down the bar ... where there were also flies but fewer. When I told the bartender why I was moving, she laughed. Just laughed. Like I had just told her a funny joke. At that point I could only imagine what the hell was going on in the kitchen if the bar was a fly haven but I was hungry and everyone told me the pulled pork sandwich was good, so I got it with a side salad to start. My salad was a bowl of lettuce with literally: 1 slice of cucumber, 1 onion slice, 1 cherry tomato. That was it. Oh and a slice of banana pepper. There was so much lettuce in that tiny, tiny bowl I looked like an idiot trying to eat it while it was falling out all over the bar. Then the sandwich. Oh god, that horrible sandwich. It was just pork. No BBQ sauce. Nothing. Just dry, cardboard tasting pork with some slices of pickles on the side. The fries were so soggy I questioned whether they were actually fries and then even more so when I looked closely at them: they were green. The most palatable part, and I say that only because it didn't entirely make me want to spit it out, was a small ramekin of coleslaw. Meanwhile, the bartender sat at the bar and watched me pick at my food as she complained to other employees that she wasn't feeling very good. I ordered a beer to try and wash away the horrible taste in my mouth. She told me bottles were cheaper than draft (??) and then handed me a bottle with a frosted glass. I poured my own beer and began drinking it but the frost never quite went away. Turns out, it was just some weird film on the glass. By that point, I just desperately wanted to leave but my credit card had been sitting on the bar top for quite a while and the bartender was just hangin' out in one of the bar stools. Finally, I got her attention, paid a tip that was over 20 percent and left while she and the only other guest whispered something about me as I walked out. If I could give them a bit of advice, I'd let them know they should invest in some cleaning products and maybe just stick to dinner service when their guests are drunk. And definitely tell the back of house guys to take a shower. They looked like they swam in the grease my fries were covered in and if they're going to be doing sidework behind the bar and in front of guests, they should appear a little more presentable when they walk out of the kitchen. Oh and I forgot to mention that the owner was there too. The OWNER. He was speaking to some people about the bar's concept, about how they try not to be pretentious and just a friendly neighborhood place. It seemed like he may have been being interviewed for something. I work in the neighborhood, actually right next door, and I spend a lot of time there. I know his clientele and, as a neighborhood bar, you should reflect the people you serve. Yeah, we like dives, but we also like cleanliness and we definitely like good food. I think the owners of High Beck are such kind and thoughtful people. Though they are skilled business owners, their show of human compassion for all individuals is quite obvious. One very cold winter day while I was having some beer upon free pizza night, I noticed a homeless man whom strayed in through the doors for some warmth and a free meal. I was speaking to another patron at the time. And they explained to me that the owners have such a giving and generous nature for those struggling within their lives. From that point on, High Becks became my haunt. And though I am not homeless, every time I go, I always feel so welcome and invited. One of the two owners or an employee always comes up to me to say hello and ask how I am. Oh, and the hand made food, the special brewed beers and the very romantic ambiance are also such a draw. It's all 4 star at a price anyone can afford. I give High Beck 2 thumbs up. If I had 4 thumbs, I would give them the additional two. read more
