I'm not sure how it's allowed (probably grandfathered in from when this place used to be a "rough part of town") but, I LOVE IT! The bartender was maybe the best conversationalist I've ever experienced at a bar. He was genuinely interested in what I had to say and was instantly engaging. His name was Michael. The beer prices were CHEAP and they had a surprisingly decent selection of taps, much of it local. Beck Tavern is the darkest and dingiest of the dive bars in Columbus. It's so dark that you should think about bringing a flashlight. This place has not changed much over the years. It's gotten some new TVs but not much else. There's always a bunch of regulars who are having a good time. It of course is located on Beck. Not to be confused with High Beck Tavern, which is upscale compared to here. The inside is filled with old wood paneling. It's kind of hard to see anything. They keep it so dark inside. Maybe you don't want to see the inside better. The bar seems pretty clean though. It has some old musty smells but it's not horrible. This bar is right in the middle of German Village. It gives you a great idea about what to drink. Luckily they have those cool Jager machines. I love getting me some bombs. It's about $4.50 per bomb at happy hour. They also have many beers on tap. A popular activity is darts. They also have a fantastic jukebox. It kind of feels out of place where it's at. It's in a really good neighborhood. A very long time favorite but it's amazing how the indifference of a bartender can soil a long standing appreciation for a nice hole in the wall bar. A recent experience with the larger female bartender left me disappointed and rethinking my future visits to The Beck. Trying too hard to be a "Rough Chick" and dropping too many F-bombs amid her obvious disdain for those customers that weren't her favorites was obvious and distasteful. Was a little apprehensive when we got there but turned into a perfect stop for a beer during a walk around the neighborhood. I don't go out on the weekend usually, because even the dives tend to draw a bigger, more irritating crowd, but I came here on a Saturday night from 9-12ish and found myself with a small crowd of folks who left my rowdy party of 5 in peace. - Two Hearted on tap. Always a must for any place I'm going to call my own. Low beck is a hole-in-the-wall bar that looks rough on the outside, but packs a great atmosphere on the inside! With multiple TVs, 3 dart boards and a cool jukebox, this place has a very welcoming feel. If that's not what gets you, then go visit Mike the bartender! He's a great guy that makes the bar that much more appealing. Prices are really good ($2 for some domestics; at least on weeknights), seating is decent (bar stools and some extra seating) and street parking (could be limited around GV on a busy night). Beck Tavern (colloquially 'Low Beck') is my favorite go-to bar in Columbus. This place is the perfect example of a straight-up dive hovering satisfactorily above hole-in-the-wall. There's a smell, but only sometimes. It's cheap, but the selection is good. The bathrooms are a bit rickety, but they are always clean and I never have to wait. Low Beck has a consistent regular crowd, but there is also a good mix during the peak bar-going nights. The jukebox is one of those mega search online digital numbers, so there is always a wide variety of tunes playing. TVs for sports, excellent and non-annoying service, dart boards, and enough seating all make for the best of low key bar experiences. Yes, it is a good thing that the bartender looked at me funny when I asked for a Rusty Nail. He knew what it was, he just wasn't sure they had Drambuie. Once he found it he was sure when it had last been opened. After he got it open he gave it the ole smell test to make sure it was still good. Somehow, all of these things help Beck Tavern. I have been going to the Beck Tavern since the mid 90's and now I live around the corner. I am not entirely certain why we started frequenting the Beck, but, I am pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that it is the quintessential dive bar. All through College this was where we all knew to meet the night before Thanksgiving... It was and is a tradition! Everything from the sign outside screams dive bar! When I walk in the bar it feels as if I am walking back into 1995... Absolutely nothing has changed (aside from the new Juke box, Mega Touch machine and newish dart boards). The bar hasn't changed in over 15 years.... the oddly shaped booths in the front and the back are favorite spots for meeting a group. I can sit at the Beck Tavern for hours playing PhotoHunt or playing a heated game of darts. If you are looking for ultra friendly service.... this is not the place. If you squirm in a less than clean bathroom... Go somewhere else. If you are looking for fruity drinks, a wine list or micro brews... I also suggest looking elsewhere. The fact that it is equipped with cold beers, Darts, Mega Touch and a great Juke Box keeps me coming back. The Beck Tavern is a German Village staple! read more

This is the very first bar I went into upon moving to Columbus. How could I not? It's a few blocks away and came highly recommended by my parents from when they lived here 30 years ago. Following a bar recommendation from my parents was my first mistake. This bar probably looks the same as it did 30 years ago, but I didn't find that to be an advantage. It seems run down in the middle of gorgeous surroundings. I don't think they serve food at all. The night we went and asked if they served food, they pointed to a tub of hot dogs in one of the booths that were free. No, thank you. The regulars that were there were crazy loud with really cringe-inducing conversations that I would prefer not to overhear. It is super dark and kind of gloomy on the inside. I should probably give this place another try. After all, they do have a ridiculously long happy hour from 2-8pm with $1.50 domestics if that's your thing. The service was friendly as well. There is clearly a reason this place has stayed in business for this long I just need to figure it out... read more

I've lived in German Village for nearly 3 years now, and have frequented Beck Tavern many, many times with friends and family. It's my favorite bar in the area. The atmosphere is comfortable and homey; it's like hanging out in your best friend's parents' basement back home. Not a shred of pretension. The drinks are cheap and the bartenders are always friendly and on top of things. They have a great happy hour on Monday through Friday with domestics and well drinks for $2.00 or less up until 7:00PM, so my roommate and I have been going on Thursday nearly every week. They've got 4 dartboards and a great jukebox that you can select songs on through your iPhone if you download the app (which is quick and easy). There are plenty of TVs that typically play a variety of sports. The only bummer is that there's no food (with the exception of a small selection of chips), but I actually prefer it that way. It's within easy walking distance from plenty of restaurants so it's a great stop for pre- or post-dinner drinks. read more

Ah, Beck's. You're A-OK, for sure. This place is ridiculously close to my house, so I've ended up here with friends when we're not quite ready to go home yet (but probably should), or have already been imbibing at my house and feel the urge to go out but not far (but we probably shouldn't). The vibe: Divey, which is funny considering the multi-million dollar homes it neighbors (not my house). The clientele: Regulars; old German Village Rats. The booze: Bell's Two Hearted on tap!!! One time I locked myself out of my apartment and had to go to Beck's to wait for a friend with a spare key. I think if I hadn't had this experience there, I probably would've given it an extra star. First, there were just a bunch of dudes there by themselves. It was clearly a stop off before these dudes went home to their wives, girlfriends, kids, or... maybe they just didn't want to go home and be alone yet. But it was pretty weird and sad. One guy had just come from a hockey game and just wanted to talk about hockey, but no one else did, so he just started shouting stats at the TV. Another dude was asking every other patron for a cigarette, and then overly talking to them afterwards. The bartender and another patron exchanged glances while the dude went outside for a minute, and said "I don't think he's really after a cigarette." I'm kind of dumb when it comes to these underbelly affairs... so I wonder what this guy wanted. Sexual favors? Drugs? Even though I was the only lady in the place, and it was extremely weird and depressing, I still feel like this is a safe environment (rest assured). Anyway, I think I'll continue to enjoy chilling here with friends, preferably under the influence of an adult beverage or two *before* I walk in. Also, if you're meeting friends here, be sure to clarify that it's the Beck Tavern at Beck and 6th, not High-Beck at, well, High and Beck (which is slightly more well-known). I have friends who differentiate the two by calling the Beck Tavern Lo-Beck. Finally, as the weather gets nicer, I'll probably find myself at the Lo-Beck a little less often as I opt for patios. It's a great den of warmth in the winter, though. read more

if i lived in german village, i think i would make it a point to become an institution at this bar. it is a dive. the table in the front was obviously custom cut for the space its in, yet it constantly feels like its going to tip over. there's darts, pool, and a jukebox. we went on st patricks day, there were maybe 2 other people there, and there was an announcement on the jukebox about how no one was allowed to play any irish music. THIS is the kind of bar i want to hang out in, not the kind with weird signature cocktails, holier than thou attitudes, and popped collars. read more

Went to this neighborhood staple on a Friday night after work. Instantly got the vibe that this is a local place. And by that, I mean, it seemed like everyone knew each other. Although, I was a single, non-regular.... I was welcomed by both the female and male bartenders on shift, all the while they were interacting with the regulars. And although, none of the regulars reached out, the bartenders were exceptional in making me feel welcome.
