I ran a bike shop in Boulder CO, which is a biking Mecca. My customers were Olympians and some of the best riders in the country and from around the world. I reached out looking for a specific bike and was prepared to purchase it from High Gear Sports. I talked to two different representatives and both were rude, short and acted as if I was an inconvenience by asking questions before purchasing. I have never seen such snobbery even in the extremely high end bike shops as I experienced from High Gear. My family has bought several bikes from them and they were the first business I went to. Fortunately there are plenty of other options. I will be going to Mclain Cycle in Traverse City and support them. They were fantastic and had no issue taking the time and answering my questions. I am a business consultant and am blown away by the attitude and lack of customer service by High Gear Sports. Very impressed with their service and technicians, especially Damien. Everyone went out of their way to ensure my Specialized Como bike was ready for the Memorial weekend. I thought I was having battery issues, so Damien did some troubleshooting and instead it turned out to be the monitor. We wanted to rent bikes to ride along the wheelway from Petosky to Charlevoix. It was a Tuesday, late morning when we went in. At first they said they didn't have any bikes left. But they they found 2, so we took them. $15 per bike for 4 hours, or $25 per bike for 24 hours. We didn't take helmets, so I don't know if there was an extra charge for them. We wanted to ride down to Charlevoix for lunch, but the guy had no idea how far it was (it's about 19 miles....we drove down afterward). It might have been nice to have a lock. We didn't leave the bikes, but it would have been nice to have the option. It would also have been nice to have a wheelway map. We had no idea how far along the trail we were. The bikes we received were nice bikes. Mine had thicker tires....meant more work to keep up with my husband. We went at a steady pace, didn't stop along the way, and made it to Charlevoix in under 2 hours. Ate a quick lunch, rode back, and returned the bikes in exactly 4 hours. read more

Very short and rude sales guy who told me no. When I asked him for suggestions of other bike shops in the area that might be of service he said no and hung up. Recently moved to the area & was looking for my new running gear supplier... Made a preliminary call to be sure they carried what I was looking for & stopped in after finding out they did. Had cash in hand and was ready to purchase... until I asked about their return/exchange policy. Maybe I was spoiled by my last place, who encouraged you to take a run in the shoes & wanted to work with customers until they found the right thing. They certainly didn't want people to be unhappy & stuck with shoes - which can easily make or break your running routine. Unfortunately, the older gent here just wanted to sell me shoes, not gain a regular customer or ensure I was happy with the performance of the gear. Loved the shoes I tried on but am taking my business to the Brooks dealer in Harbor Springs instead as their customer service was 5-star! read more

We purchased a defective bike at the shop. There were problems with the gears on the trainer in the store before we even left the store. We have been back six times in person to resolve the issue. They were rude and unprofessional. Joe, the owner/manager actually hung up on us on the telephone twice when we called to say enough was enough we are returning the bike! Despite paying CASH in the tune of $1,600 in this store and driving back and forth over 600 miles in an attempt to resolve the issue we have a bike that does not shift properly have been treated horribly by this shop who REFUSES TO REPAIR, REPLACE OR REFUND THEIR PRODUCT!!!! We have had the bike inspected by an independent specialist and have video which confirms the bike is defective and the inoperable condition is unrelated to our ability to pedal or shift a bike as the store owner claims. Instead of working with us to resolved the issue the owner was rude and condescending insulting our intelligence and basic cycling ability claiming that we didn't know how to shift or pedal a bike. Who blames a customer? These people are not professionals and do not warranty their product! Joe, the owner's, verbal strong arm tactics are so horrific they are literally unimaginable! We cannot even comprehend an owner or manager who would refuse to service, replace or refund and to be so rude to hang up on them. Who hangs us on their customer? Who allows a customer to return 6 and 7 times and does not resolve the issue or defect it out and exchange the product? Who refuses to put their refusal in writing? We asked for his guarantee in writing he refused to provide it. We asked for a letter in writing stating he refused to return the bike and he hung up the phone on us. Professionals in the worst retail settings provide outstanding customer service so we are very alarmed at the insulting and abusive customer service we have received at this store. We paid in good faith for a working product and received defective bike that this store refuses to repair, replace or refund within the first 14 days of a sale. THEY ARE A RIP OFF AND THE ABUSIVE LEVEL OF CUSTOMER SERVICE CAN NOT BE EXPLAINED OR EXCUSED !!!!!!! RIDE THE OTHER DIRECTION AWAY FROM THIS SHOP AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!!!!! read more

Extraordinary bike shop- very knowledgeable staff, courteous, patient plus a fantastic selection for all levels. I went in to buy a "nice" bike to ride up north, and found the choices of bikes so intriguing, I ended up falling in love with a carbon Diverge Expert! The owner John and one of his staff Chad, were sooooo patient with me while I rode different bikes., And they were never pushy whatsoever.... just patient and informative. Very rude. Stopped in today with my son and his bike. As soon as we crossed the threshold the man behind the counter yelled out, "you're gonna have to take that around back." I explained that we didn't need service just wanted to get a bike bag and wanted to make sure it would fit. Responded rudely again, "you're still gonna need to go outside and go around back". We left and went to Bonhoff, nice folks. Bought a few other accessories as well. Avoid this very rude bike shop. read more
